Great Bend's Live Like Jesus Today Ministries has announced it will be opening a warming shelter at the Central Kansas Dream Center, 2100 Broadway Ave. in Great Bend, Friday at 10 a.m. The shelter will be in the Anchor Room on the east side of the facility.
The organizations are asking for public help with food, including soups, snacks, breakfast and dinner casseroles, and sandwiches, as well as supplies like disposable plates, bowls, cups, and utensils. Drinks like water, juice, coffee, and hot chocolate are also being accepted.
After highs near 40 on Thursday, the National Weather Service in Wichita is predicting temperatures to drop to five degrees Thursday night. Blustery wind conditions will push wind chill values as low as -9 degrees. The cold will continue Friday with a 50 percent chance of snow, mainly after noon. The predicted high for Friday is 10 degrees, with a low of -3, and wind gusts as high as 28 mph. The high temperature will linger around 7 degrees on Saturday with a low of -4. Temperatures are expected to rebound to a high near 17 on Sunday, and 27 on Monday.
