When Steve Haulmark first started as Great Bend Police Chief this past January, one of things he wanted to do right away was increase positive interaction with the public.

The Police Department recently purchased sporting equipment, including sports balls, to be readily available to play games with children in the public.

Chief Haulmark said the department is also dusting off their bicycles to rejuvenate their bike patrol.

"I think it makes the officers more accessible to the community," said Haulmark. "They are not driving by with their windows up and the air conditioner on. It also gives the officers a chance to get some exercise."

Haulmark had an influence on producing engaging social media posts including a “Did you know?” campaign that provides information about the department.

Haulmark came to Great Bend after 25 years of police experience in Kansas City.
