Arlene Virginia (Duerksen) Kreier, 90, of Salina, died on Thursday, Dec. 19, 2024, at her home in Salina.

Arleene was born June 7, 1934, to John R. and (Ernabelle) June (Klump) Duerksen in Bessie, Okla. When she was a small child, the family moved to a farm about four miles northwest of Weatherford, Okla. Arleene attended high school in Weatherford and graduated with the class of 1952. She then continued to live at home and rode the school bus into Weatherford to attend and graduated from Southwestern College in 1956 with a Bachelor Degree in Education. Arleene’s first teaching job was at Beeler, Kan., teaching business and home economics. She then taught the same classes at Utica High School. It was during this time that Arleene met, at a high school basketball game, the new young Lutheran minister, Rev. Robert Kreier, from Our Redeemer, in Ness City. The couple married, June 13, 1957, at Arleene’s home congregation, Trinity Lutheran in Clinton, Okla. The family was blessed with two children during this time, David John and Patricia Ann. The family moved to Talmage, Neb. in 1962 and while there the family added a daughter, Kristine Lynn.

While residing in Talmage, Arleene was a member of the Young Homemakers (now Tri-County) Extension Club. In January of 1973 the family moved to the Milberger, Kansas community. She joined the Prairie Mates EHU, continuing to enjoy the women's club as she had in Talmage. It was shortly after this move that Arleene decided to re-enter the workforce. She was hired as the 13th employee at the new TG&amp;Y store located at the newly built Klema Plaza Russell. She also worked at the Russell County courthouse and Keilee’s Restaurant, located in the current S&amp;W building. It was in the early 1980’s that Arleene found her second calling as a CNA, CMA and Activities Director working in Nursing Homes, starting her career at Russell Care Center, now Wheatland. After the kids finished High School in Russell, Bob and Arleene moved to rural Athol, Kansas, where Arleene worked in Smith Center, then in Bellville when they lived in the Courtland area, and finally in Salina, for a few years when they moved there after Bob’s retirement. 

She enjoyed all her kids' sports, music, 4-H and church activities, then later her grandkids, even driving two hours to babysit when they were sick and couldn't go to daycare or school. She was a Big 8, Big 12 football and basketball fan, having lived in the region her entire life. As with Bob she enjoyed being able to watch all the games, including the Cubs, Bears, Royals and Chiefs, finally having cable access in retirement. Arleene also enjoyed baking, sewing, knitting and crocheting, making many of her own and the girls’ clothes when she was younger. Later she never missed a craft show, garage sale or an opportunity to collect a cookbook, and having gardened in younger years, always had flowers in pots on the porches and patios of their homes.

Arleene was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son, son-in-law, Curtis Mader, and a daughter-in-law, Diane Branning.

She is survived by her daughters, Patrica Ann, Walton, Kan, Kristine Lynn, formerly Russell, Salina. Grandchildren, Donald Brown, Hollie, Chad, Ashley, Tyler, and TJ Kreier-Branning, ZoAnn (Adam Carey) Mader, Hayle (Jackson) Bjornstad, and Emily Mader; 12 great grandchildren and one arriving in March 2025. Her sister, Kay Fry, Oklahoma City, sister-in-law, JoAnn Kreier, and nieces and nephews.

Celebration of Arleene’s Life will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, Dec. 27, 2024, at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell. A private burial will follow the services. The family will be present to greet friends from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., Friday at the Mortuary. A Memorial has been established with St. John Lutheran Church. Arlene (Duerksen) Kreier, age 90

Rebecca Alice (Eggers) Lopez, 83, passed away Saturday morning, December 7, 2024 at her home in Appomattox, Virginia.

Rebecca was born on October 6, 1941, to Raymond and Ruby Eggers in Great Bend, Kansas. She grew up in Ellinwood, graduated from Ellinwood High School, and then attended nursing school in Wichita, Kansas.

Becky worked for many years at the New York Public Library where she met Robert. They fell in love and the rest is history.

Becky loved nature, especially dogs, cats, and squirrels. She enjoyed eating breakfast while watching the local squirrels and birds from her kitchen table. Becky spent many hours quilting blankets and mats for sheltered dogs and cats in Appomattox, Virginia.

She was survived by her loving husband Robert, daughter Michele, son Philip, and her loving stepchildren Karen, Ann Marie, Nancy, Diane, Robert, Steven and Joe and David.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister Florence Gideon and her husband Fray.

Rebecca (Eggers) Lopez, age 83

Dolores Dorothy Dietz, age 93, of Locust Grove Village in LaCrosse, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2024, in LaCrosse. She was born on July 7, 1931, in Rush County, to Sylvester and Mary (Unrein) Zimmerman.

Dolores was a woman of great strength and resilience, known for her devotion to family. She was united in marriage to Lavine Herrman on May 10, 1949 in Schoenchen, who preceded her in death on Dec. 14, 1977. On March 17, 1979, she married Robert Dietz in LaCrosse. Robert also preceded her in death on Feb. 22, 2013.

Dolores dedicated her life to her family, enjoying the company of her grandchildren. She was a homemaker, known for her impeccable housekeeping, strong-willed nature, and kind heart. Dolores found joy in creative pursuits such as sewing, needlepointing, crocheting, and playing bingo. A gifted musician, she could play both the organ and accordion by ear, sharing her musical talents with others.

Her faith was central to her life. Dolores served as the church organist at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Liebenthal, where she was also a member of the altar society. Later, she attended St. Michael’s Catholic Church in LaCrosse and St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church in Hays.

Dolores is survived by her sons, Ronald Herrman and wife Nancy of Hays, and Stephen Herrman and wife Vicki of Emporia; her stepchildren, John Dietz and wife Liza, and James Dietz and wife Natasha; her brothers, Leon, Lavern, Duane, David, and Michael Zimmerman; her sisters, Norma Jacobs and Janet Steinert; her grandchildren, Jamie Herrman, Heather Herrman, Amy Hayden, Tate Herrman, and Stephanie Brown; 4 step-grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; a brother, Percy Zimmerman; and sisters, Patti Zimmerman, Cathy Kreutzer, and Elma Suppes.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 21, 2024, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in LaCrosse, with Fr. Stephen Dabanka officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be Friday, Dec. 20, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Keithley Funeral Homes and Crematory - Brock's Chapel, 2509 Vine, Hays, KS 67601. On Saturday, visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30&nbsp; a.m. at St. Michael’s Church, followed by a rosary service at 10:30 a.m..

Dolores Dietz, age 93

Dr. Richard Allen “Dick” Schaffer, 82, died Dec. 13, 2024, at his home. He was born Feb. 2, 1942, in Beloit. He grew up in Beloit with parents Loran and Marjorie (Allen) Schaffer, and Brother Robert “Bob.”

Dick treasured his small-town childhood - with a big family and multitudes of friends. He described his parents as “two of the finest people that one could ever find in this tough world.” Dick enjoyed playing, fishing, and hunting wild rabbit. Dick admitted to getting into trouble at St. John’s Catholic school, particularly with the nuns who didn’t see his “deviousness.” Influential was Sister Margaret Therese, a science teacher who was willing to “do the right thing with students and be fair to all.” Stamp collecting was a fun hobby until replaced by photography at age seven. His first job was working in his dad’s shop “B&amp;L Auto Service,” for 25 cents a week. He devoured Zane Grey novels. He attended pharmacy school in Fort Hays. He met his future wife, Desi Bravo, a Filipina immigrant, while studying medicine at the University of Kansas. Married in 1968, Desi and Dick lived in the Kansas City area where he had a private medical practice. They had three children: Mark, Christy, and Greg. The couple was happy initially, but personality differences drove them apart, divorcing in 1982.

Returning to Lawrence (where Bob also lived), Dick worked at KU Student Health Center. He found love with Ann Winter in 1990. Ann was funny, generous, and enjoyed ceramics. “We could finish each other’s sentences from the start.” Ann had three children: Becky, John, and Robin. Becoming a traveling Doctor, “I found the little things the most rewarding and the occasional saving of lives in the ER a routine service.” His long shifts were complemented with time to explore the state with photography. Dick and Ann married in 1994. He took a permanent position at Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend. The couple purchased a historic house in Claflin where they made art, planted countless trees, and held massive parties. Ann died in 2002. He later worked part-time for Clara Barton Hospital in Hoisington and enjoyed serving on the Claflin Library Board.

Dick valued his animal friends: dogs, miniature horses, cats, and wild turkeys. Parts of the property grew wild to encourage native species. Dick spent time with Paula Davis, a kindred spirit when it came to animals. They showed the “minis” at horse shows and otherwise laughed a lot while searching for antiques.

Dick was inspired by grand-daughters Amy who studied photography, and Tabitha who reminded him of Ann. Whether recently or long ago, drive up to “The Schaffers” property and you’d find Dick on the patio with a glass of iced tea, enjoying the beauty of the Kansas landscape. Finding peace in Claflin he said, “I returned to the person I originally was.”

He is survived by his significant other, Paula Davis of Hoisington; his three children; Mark Schaffer of Kansas City, Mo., Greg Schaffer and wife Lori of Seattle, Wash., and Christina Bravo of Shawnee; three grandchildren, Amy Schaffer, Mateo and Aurora Schaffer; stepson, John Winter of Lawrence; stepdaughters, Rebecca Spriggs of Olathe, and Robin Schneweis of Manhattan; step-grandchildren, Patrick, Cole, &amp; Tabitha; sister-in-law, Joyce Schaffer of Lawrence; nephew, Chad Schaffer of Olathe, and niece, Melanie Krumsick of Neb.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Ann, and a brother, Robert Schaffer.

Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 19, 2024, at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home, with family to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

A Memorial Service will be held 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 4, 2025, at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home, with Father Ben Dande presiding. Burial will follow at Bloomingdale Cemetery, rural Claflin.

Dr. Richard 'Dick' Schaffer, age 82

Marjorie Jean Long,&nbsp;age 91, passed away on December 17, 2024 at Kenwood Plaza, in St. John, Kansas.&nbsp; She was born on May 5, 1933 in Pratt, KS, the daughter of Harry Delbert and Orpha (Leonard) Helsel. She was a 1952 graduate of Pratt High School and was a member of the St. John Methodist Church. Marjorie was a Telephone Operator, Cashier at Dillons, both in Pratt, KS; and a Farmwife her remaining years.

On August 26, 1956, she married Allen Ray Long in Pratt, KS.

&nbsp;Surviving members of her family include; her husband of 68 years, of the home, sons, Terry and wife Debbie, Seward, KS; Christopher, St. John, KS; and Douglas and wife Jana, Washington, IL; a daughter, Vicki, Hudson, KS; Sister-in-laws, Joyce Rasko, Geneseo, IL; and Judy Helsel, Pratt, KS; &nbsp;11 Grandchildren, Ben, Brandon, Burke, Katy, Patrick, Shala, Kyle, Katherine, Zachary, Logan and Tiara; 19 Great Grandchildren; 1 Great- Great Grandchild; and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

&nbsp;She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Alice Scott; brothers Richard and Marvin Helsel.

Funeral Service will be held Sunday, December 22, 2024 at 2:00 p.m., at Minnis Chapel 526 E. 4th, St. John, KS with Pastor Wade Russell presiding. Burial to follow at Fairview Park Cemetery, St. John, KS.

Marjorie Jean Long,&nbsp;age 91, passed away on December 17, 2024 at Kenwood Plaza, in St. John, Kansas.&nbsp; She was born on May 5, 1933 in Pratt, KS, the daughter of Harry Delbert and Orpha (Leonard) Helsel. Eugene Wesley Hoelscher, 85, passed away at University of Kansas Health System in Great Bend, Kan., December 16, 2024. He was born April 14, 1939, to Spurgeon and Beulah Mae (Learned) Hoelscher in Hutchinson. He had been a resident of Great Bend since 1999, coming from Bushton.

Eugene joined the Army after high school and was stationed at Fort Riley from 1961-1963. After his service, he married Shirley Ann Shann May 31, 1970, at Salem United Methodist Church in Bushton. She died July 11, 2016. He worked for Northern Natural Gas/Enron, for 40 plus years, retiring as an operator. He also enjoyed his lifetime of farming and running cattle with his brother Delbert. After retirement, he stayed busy working at Walmart. He was an avid sports fan of his kids and grandkids, and in his down time, kept his mind busy doing word searches.

Survivors include daughters, Lisa Ryan and her husband Jim of Claflin, Rosemary Werdahl of Holyrood, Phyllis Johnson of Manhattan, and Rita Hoelscher of Manhattan; brother, Delbert Hoelscher and his wife Sherry of Bushton; sister, Carolyn Rich and her husband Reverend Ron of Wichita; brother in law Dr. Dennis Finley of Wichita; grandchildren, Brandon Werdahl, LaKesha Johnson, Jasmin Johnson, Michael (Katie) Ryan, Janae Ryan, Devin Ryan, Emily Ryan, Peyton Ryan. Eugene Hoelscher, age 85

Wynona Mae Unruh, 97, passed away December 12, 2024, at Medicalodges of Great Bend, Kansas. She was born May 9, 1927, in Ringwood, Oklahoma to Clyde and Susie (Becker) Kehn. Wynona grew up on a farm in Oklahoma and graduated from Oklahoma Bible Academy in Meno, Okla. She married Grant Olin Unruh November 2, 1946, in Meno, Okla. He died January 11, 1999.

Olin and Wynona moved to Kansas and were longtime Barton County residents. Wynona took much pride in her family heritage on the farm and would help wherever she was needed. She provided her family home-cooked meals with homemade bread and pies. There were always cookies in the cookie jar for the grandkids.

Her talents in food service led her to work for Pawnee Rock Schools as a cook for 18 years. Other jobs included serving as a compassionate caregiver in home health, nurse’s aide and dressmaker shop. She was a talented seamstress, quilter, and did exceptional embroidery work. She was a proud member of the Thread Benders Quilt Guild.

She was a member of Bergthal Mennonite Church, rural Pawnee Rock and was a loyal servant to helping those in need. She worked tirelessly on projects for the Mennonite Central Committee. Church members donated funds to purchase items for school kits and hygiene kits and Wynona spent much time comparing prices and collecting items for the day that church members would pack up to 1000 school kits to be shipped overseas. The Bergthal Mission Workers completed, quilted and tied hundreds of comforters and constructed thousands of school kit bags. Items were sent to Mennonite Central Committee and shipped to the poorest countries. It could be said that Wynona’s compassion made an impact across the world.

Survivors include her children, Steve Unruh and his wife Sandy of Cimarron, Lois Ratliff of Great Bend, Benita Puck and her husband Brian of Arvada, Colo., Dale Unruh and his wife Berny of Great Bend; grandchildren, Brandy Unruh, Shanna Alexander (Matt), Kale Unruh (Lana), Jakeb Unruh (Sarah), Kevin Ratliff, James Ratliff (Suzi), Adam Unruh, Danette Unruh, Grant Unruh, Katrina Alsum (Levi); great grandchildren, Rylee Unruh, Keira Buccholz, Aidan Unruh, Sonny Ratliff, Jonathan Ratliff, Victoria Ratliff, Kaislee Unruh, and Whitlee Unruh. She had special caregivers from ElderCare, Vera Conley and Sheena Thomas. Wynona Unruh, age 97

Barbara Jean Steiner, age 95, went to Heaven on Friday December 13, 2024 surrounded by her loved ones. She passed away at Stormont Vail Hospital in Junction City, Kansas. She was born to Thomas and Barbara (Janousek) Foote in Ellsworth, Kansas on May 28, 1929. She grew up in Black Wolf, Kansas, and lived in Great Bend most of her adult life until moving to Brookdale Assisted Living in Junction City two years ago. She married Clayton Steiner in Ellsworth, Kansas on June 1st, 1948. Clayton passed away November 7th, 2001.

Barbara lived a life rooted in faith, love, and service to others. A lifelong Catholic, she was a devoted member of Saint Patrick Catholic Church for many years where her commitment to the church inspired those around her through prayer and volunteer work. She radiated kindness, compassion, and grace to everyone she encountered.

As a mother and grandmother, Barbara was a source of unyielding love and guidance. She raised her children with special care and strength, teaching them the values of faith, family, and perseverance. She was dedicated to the care of her daughter Susan.

Her grandchildren and great grandchildren were the light of her life, and she cherished every moment spent with them. She imparted a love that will carry through generations. Her legacy will remain forever in the hearts of those she leaves behind.

Barbara was a cherished sister, aunt, and friend. Her family and friends knew her as a woman with deep integrity and a gentle spirit. Barbara touched countless lives with her generosity, humility, and unwavering faith.

Barbara began her working career as a speech aide with St. Margarita Tockert for the Institute of Logopedics Field Center in the St. Rose Hospital. She then went on to work as a paraprofessional for over 25 years with high school level special needs students. Prior to her retirement, she was influential in working with the Board of Education USD428 to ensure that paraprofessionals were included in KPERS. She was also a long-time member of the Central Kansas Association of Retired School Personnel.

She was instrumental as one of the area organizers for what has now become Sunflower Diversified Services. She was a member of the Association of Retarded Citizens, organizing a yearly summer program for them. Barbara was a lifelong friend and advocate of many mentally handicapped individuals of Barton County. She never forgot their birthdays and would send cards and gifts; as recently as the week before her passing. She wanted these adults to succeed and become contributing members of society. She actively raised money for the Association and was a door-to-door knocker for fundraisers for United Cerebral Palsy of Kansas.

She loved God! She was a long-time member of St. Patrick Catholic Church. She and Clayton were some of the original members of St. Patrick Church and School when it was founded in 1956. She was a member of the Eucharist Adoration group and was also a Eucharistic distributor. She was a member of the traditional choir, the Altar Society, and the liturgical commission, which she truly enjoyed.

One of Barbara’s proudest accomplishments was being a 67-year member of the Daughters of Isabella. She held the offices of secretary, vice regent, regent (twice), past regent, and chancellor.

She was also a member of Etudian, and a Community Concert area coordinator.

Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Clayton, son James, daughter Susan, grandson Clayton Cooke, great granddaughter Kylie Steiner, her sisters Sr. Marilyn Foote and Margie Fox.

She is survived by her son Dan of Stilwell, Kansas and his wife Cathy (Schartz). Their children Ryan and wife Kelli (Vasquez), their children Carson, Addison, Jake, and Ava. Their son Clint and wife Christi (Schlagel) and their children Grace, Collin, and Cooper. Their daughter Tara and her husband Adam Terella and their children Ava, Alyssa, Jack, and Jameson.

Also surviving is Barbara’s daughter Laurie and son-in-law Stacey Cooke of Junction City, Kansas. Their children Bethany and husband Adam (Rush) Cooke and son Callen. Their daughter Katie and husband Justin Lytle, their children Lacey, AJ, Tatum and Miles. Daughter Briana and husband Ken Talley and their sons Kenny and Teddy.

Surviving Barbara is her brother Tom and wife Sharon of St. Petersburg, Florida, brother-in- law Keith Fox of St. Joseph, Missouri, and sister Kathy and husband John Triplett of Junction City, Kansas. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

She will truly be missed by her family and all those who knew and loved her. The family would like to express their deep gratitude to the staff of Brookdale Assisted Living as well as Stormont Vail Hospital of Junction City. Your exemplary care and love for our mother will never be forgotten!

Christabelle “Chris” DeWald-Bickle, 96, passed away peacefully on December 12, 2024, surrounded by loving family at Ascension Via Christi Village in Hays, Kansas. She was born on May 31, 1928, in Hoisington, Kansas, the daughter of Christian and Marie Elizabeth (Karst) Kramer. Chris was baptized on June 6, 1928, and confirmed in the Christian faith on April 18, 1943.

Chris was a graduate of Hoisington High School Class of 1946. She continued her education at Central Business College in Denver, Colorado. Chris started her career at Hoisington Lutheran Hospital – now Clara Barton Hospital – where she was an office manager for 40 years. She retired December 31, 1990. Chris also served as the secretary and treasurer of Concordia Lutheran Church in Hoisington for many years.

She married Vernon DeWald on June 11, 1950, until he passed on April 14, 1976. On July 6, 2007, she married her high school sweetheart, Don Bickle, at Concordia Lutheran Church.

Survivors include her husband, Don, of Hays; two daughters, Susan Bryant and Lynette Pfannenstiel; two sons, D.G. Bickle and Tim Bickle; grandson, Wyatt Bryant; and great granddaughter, Saige Bryant. With her extended family, she was blessed with an additional eight grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Chris also had nine nieces and nephews that loved her very much.

She is preceded in death by her parents; and two sisters, Dorothy Minson and Esther Valerius.

Cremation has taken place. Visitation with family receiving guests will be open from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Sunday, December 15, 2025, at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home. Caryl Ann Francis-Niedens, 56, died Dec. 9 at The Village in Mission, Prairie Village, Kan., after a thoroughly courageous and inspiring year-long fight with a rare form of cancer.

Born Aug. 28, 1968, in Hays, Kan., she was the daughter of Robert Francis and Carla (VonFeldt) Detherage. She spent the first few years of her life in Ellis County, Kan., then moved to Ellinwood, Kan., before moving to Great Bend, Kan. She graduated from Great Bend High School in 1986, Barton County Community College in 1988 and the University of Kansas in 1993 with a B.A. in interior design.

Caryl began her career in interior design/architecture and facilities management with Schooley Inc. in Independence, Mo. She later worked with Faciliteam, Inc., and served as lead designer for the executive suite in a tenure with Sprint Corp. Later, she led various development projects at Church of the Resurrection in Overland Park, Kan.

A Certified Facility Manager, Caryl also led corporate relocations for Applebee’s Restaurants, the Kansas City office of the Environmental Protection Agency, the Kansas City headquarters of the General Accounting Office and many high-level private sector clients. A longtime member of the International Facility Management Association (IFMA), she also assisted the interior redesign of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in Kansas City, Mo.

Caryl’s career resume, however, does little to define her best qualities: She was a wonderful wife, mother and friend. She was devoted, honest, loving, feisty, loyal, beautiful and dedicated to good causes. She was a unique and kind individual. No one can replace her. All should replicate her example.

Caryl’s survivors include her husband, Lyle; her sons, Conley and Pierce; and her sister, Lisa Francis. Her father, mother, stepfather, Coyle Detherage; and sister, Lori, preceded her in death.

Sidne Sue "Susie" (Mog)&nbsp; Seeman, 84, of Larned, passed away Thursday, Oct. 31, 2024, at Pawnee Valley Community Hospital in Larned.

Sue's life journey began on Nov. 17, 1939, in the most remarkable way. As her parents, William "Bill" Mog and Nora Loree (King) Mog, attempted to make it to the hospital in Goodland during a terrible snowstorm, they had to improvise, boarding a school bus when the roads became impassable. Susie was born on the bus on the way to the hospital. Two years later, her sister and best friend, Donna (Mog) Hanken, was born, cementing a bond of love and shared memories for the family of four.

Sue graduated from Hudson High School, Hudson, and decided to follow in both her parents' footsteps to become a PE teacher. She enrolled at Fort Hays State College but soon found her creative spirit drawn to the world of hairdressing. Sidne Sue earned her cosmetology certificate in 1961 from Sidney's Hairdressing College, Inc., in Hutchinson. In the beauty shop built by her father at their home in Larned, Susie practiced her craft with her weekly standings.

Susie filled her younger days with tennis, golf, and Bridge alongside her sister and parents. As she got older, volleyball, softball, painting, woodworking, and poetry were added to her list of activities. Sue discovered internet card games, and during her 60s, up until her death, she played online Bridge with friends from the United States and Canada.

Sue married Winston C. Seeman on June 6, 1964. They were happy with the arrival of their first daughter, Michelle Renee', though the 1965 Thunderbird they had special-ordered was not to be—baby first! The family was complete when, two years later, Denise Loree was born. As much as Susie loved her sports and activities, she loved her daughters more. Sue encouraged her girls to be active in school and sports and to have many friends. People of old will remember the old Ford Falcon station wagon full of kids being transported to the movies or the pool. Susie and her sister, Aunt Donnie, seemed inseparable while raising their children together. Michelle, Denise, and cousins Missy and Rhonda enjoyed countless hours of fun together while enduring many car rides with their mothers’ “singing”!

Sue and Winston later divorced after 50 years of marriage.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Michelle (Dean) Dreiling and Denise (Steve) Staab; granddaughters Abbey (Tom) Hammann, Madalyne Staab, Lauren (Evan) Murphy, and Karlie Murphy; and great-grandchildren Avery and Bennett Hammann.

Interment of her ashes will occur in the spring, her favorite time of year. She will join her loving parents at the Larned Cemetery,&nbsp;Larned, Ks. A celebration of life will be announced at a later time.

Lenora Margaret (Budig) Hutton, 93, passed away Dec. 10, 2024, in Great Bend. She was born May 24, 1931, in Red Wing to Anton and Eleanor (Mauler) Budig.

Lenora married Herbert M. Byerly Aug. 6, 1951, in Stockton. He passed May 2, 1961. She married William C. Hutton in 1965, in Lacrosse. They later divorced. Lenora was a hard worker and devoted to providing for her family. She served the community as a reserve for the Great Bend Police Department, a compassionate home caregiver for Sunflower Diversified, provided her culinary skills cooking at the V.F.W., and worked at Fuller Brush as a machine operator.

Throughout her life, Lenora devoted her life to church, family, and community. She attended Prince of Peace Parish at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, was an Altar Society member, and Daughters of Isabella member. She enjoyed quilting, coaching youth basketball teams, volunteering her free time to traveling along with the Argonne Rebels and providing meals, being a den mother, and spending time with her family, who will miss her immensely.

Survivors include her two daughters, Tracy M. Roat (David) of Great Bend, Stacy M. Dinicola (David) of Rose Hill; four sons, Donald L. Byerly (Mary Gregg) of Wichita, Glen A. Byerly (Betty) of Raymore, Mo., Gerald A. Byerly (Jaqueta) of Enid, Okla., James M. Byerly of Mulvane; step-daughters, Vicki St. Claire, Joleen Hutton, Janiece Cook; sisters Katherine “Blondie” McGrath of Pleasant Hills, Calif., Beatrice “Bea” Axman of Olmitz; 15 grandchildren, Crystal, Kimberly, Allen, Sara, Patricia, Crista, Christopher, Arthur, Zachary, Peter, Tyler, Alexander, Kristin, Doris, Trenton; 15 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild, and a host of additional relatives and friends. Judith Ann “Judy” Siemsen, 79, passed away Thursday, December 5, 2024 in Great Bend, KS. She was born March 27, 1945 in Wichita, KS. On November 18, 1946, she was adopted by Leo and Renata (Schulz) Mehl. Judy married Robert Siemsen on October 28, 1979 in Holyrood, KS. The couple settled in the area, and Judy became a farmwife and helped raise cattle. She was a member of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in Holyrood.

Judy is survived by her daughter Sheila Meyer (Scott) of Burrton, KS; daughter Sheri Yager (Brian) of Great Bend, KS; son Steve Siemsen (Sherry) of Holyrood; daughter Julie Nienke (Bob) of Lorraine, KS; 22 grandchildren and 35 great grandchildren; brother James Mehl of Conway Springs, KS; and son-in-law Mike Volavka of Caldwell, KS. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Robert and daughter Debbie Volavka.

Peggy June (Aves) Wilson, age 90, passed away on Dec. 6, 2024 at Pratt Regional Medical Center, Pratt, KS. She was born on May 21, 1934 at Hopewell, KS., the daughter of John Emerson and Leatha Marie (Johnson) Aves. She was a resident of rural Macksville since 1948. 

She was a member of the Macksville Christian Church since 1987, Macksville Mother’s Club, Macksville Centennial Committee, MHS Booster Club, Red Hat Society, and Red Cross Coordinator. Peggy was an avid supporter of her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren by attending many of their sporting and academic events. She became a homemaker on Jan. 3, 1953, when she married Doyle E. Wilson in rural Macksville, KS.

Christopher Dean Rorabaugh, age 72 of Ellis passed away Dec. 2, 2024. He was born on Nov. 13, 1952, in Seneca, to Roscoe Dean "R.D." and Helena "Mija" (Moden) Rorabaugh. Chris graduated from Ellis High School in 1970 and then Fort Hays State University. On April 17, 1970, he married Rebecca Sue (Hurt) at the United Methodist Church in Ellis.

He was a dedicated husband, father, educator, and coach. As a devoted husband of 54 years and a loving father, he found immense joy and purpose in his family. His unwavering commitment to creating cherished memories and nurturing a life filled with love and laughter will always be remembered and treasured by those who knew him best.&nbsp;

He was deeply committed to his students, always striving to inspire and guide them toward their full potential. His passion for teaching and coaching extended beyond the classroom and field as he worked tirelessly to make a positive impact on the lives of everyone he encountered.&nbsp;

Chris's teaching and coaching career started in Utica, Kansas in 1975 where he coached boys’ basketball, football as well as track and field. After leaving Utica, Chris continued teaching and coaching in Bushton, Chetopa, and Copeland where he held the position of being the high school principal and coached before returning to his beloved hometown of Ellis in 1990.

Chris was with the Ellis school district for 23 years. During his tenure at Ellis, he was a respected and successful coach at the Junior and Senior High levels, known for guiding his teams to multiple victorious seasons and leaving a lasting impact on sports.&nbsp;

He was selected as the KSHSAA Track and Field Coach of the Year twice, representing the great success the Ellis Track Program had under his tenure. Chris was also an accomplished high school basketball coach taking two of the Ellis teams to state. In 2006, Chris was honored to receive recognition from the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association for accumulating 350 wins, an accomplishment Chris was very proud of along with his 30 years of service with the KBCA. Chris was also honored to be inducted into the Ellis Teachers Hall of Fame in 2007.

Retirement was not really retirement for Chris. In 2009, he returned to coaching at various area schools and began referring. His passion for coaching and referring became his purpose in life.&nbsp;

Chris also worked for the City of Hays Public Works Division as a Code Enforcement Officer. He has held this position for the last 15 years.&nbsp;

Chris is survived by his loving wife, Rebecca Sue (Hurt) Rorabaugh of Ellis; He took immense pride in his family, which includes his son, Dustin Rorabaugh of Hays, and children, Taden, Lakyn, Jaxon, and Ava; his daughters, Rachel Hartman and husband Jeff of Shawnee, along with their children, Whitney, Ben, and Jacob; Jessica Rhoden and husband Jeff of Hays, and her children, Candace, Brandon (and wife Christen, and their daughter Eloise), Brittany, and Carter; and Robbi Nartley and husband Chris of Edmond, Okla., with children Josslyn and Jaden; Chris's brothers, Steve Rorabaugh and wife Jan of Loveland, Colo., Kevin Rorabaugh and wife Lyndel of Ellis, and David Rorabaugh and wife Melissa of Hays; as well as Chris’ furbabies, Salt, Pepper, and Myah.&nbsp;

Preceding him in death were his parents, R.D. “Rocky” and Mija Rorabaugh, and his beloved furbaby, Wilbur "Willie".

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 7, 2024 at Celebration Community Church 5790 230th Ave Hays, KS 67601. Burial will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Ellis, Kansas.

Visitation will be Friday 5 p.m. - 7 p.m. at Celebration Community Church.

Christopher Rorabaugh, age 72

Virginia Louise Klepper, 96, passed away Dec. 3, 2024, at Ascension Living Via Christi Village in Hays. She was born on Oct. 15, 1928, at the family home in Redwing, Kansas to Ernest and Caroline (Budig) Dressler. In 1949, Virginia married the love of her life and the father of their six children, Clifford Klepper. Known for her vitality and generous spirit, Virginia lit up every room she entered. Her zest for life was perhaps best (and frequently) expressed on the dance floor, with grace and exuberance.

Virginia’s life centered on family and the simple joys of connection. Whether through her warm hospitality or phone calls to sing “Happy Birthday” or “A Bushel and a Peck,” she made everyone feel at home. Virginia mastered the art of visiting, bringing people together and making every interaction memorable.

She enjoyed a lifetime of dancing, including ballroom, swing, polka, square, and round dancing. As a journalism student at the University of Kansas, Virginia became a Jitterbug champion. She was an active member of the Swinging Star Square Dance Club and the Sunflower Polka Club and taught square dancing until age 88. In her later years, she enjoyed all the dances with her longtime dancing companion, Herman Disque. She also regularly attended community concerts, always embracing music and movement.

Virginia joined the Catholic faith as a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Claflin. After moving to Great Bend in 1977, she became an active, long-term member of Prince of Peace Catholic Church (formerly known as St. Patrick Parish).

Living by the motto, “Health is Wealth — Invest in Yourself,” Virginia embraced holistic self-care long before it became mainstream. She proudly worked at Town and Country Raquet Club (now known as Club 1 Fitness) in Great Bend for 24 years. She started as pool manager and sales representative before advancing to Membership Sales Manager. Throughout her career, Virginia trained water safety instructors, taught CPR and other Red Cross courses, and led swim lessons for all ages—infants, children, and adults—along with aquacise and arthritis water classes. The American Heart Association recognized her for her “Swim for Heart” programs.

Virginia served on the Board of Directors for the Golden Belt Chapter of the American Red Cross for 9 years, held Treasurer and Water Safety Chairperson positions, and was honored with the Volunteer of the Year award in 1990.

Virginia found beauty in every corner of life, and her sense of adventure carried her far and wide. She loved to travel and took joy in the outdoors, especially during fishing trips to Dressler Island in Ontario, Canada. She loved calligraphy, writing, and painting, and excelled in curating photos and memories to share with others. Gardening was another passion, as was enjoying her ripe tomatoes on a BLT sandwich. Even as she journeyed through dementia, her vibrance—and her love of ice cream—never faded.

Virginia’s memory will live on through the lives she touched and the love she shared.

She is survived by three daughters, Janice Rielly (Ron) of St. Clairsville, Ohio; Michelle Shaheen (Michael) of Derby; and Lynnette Bernasconi (Dave) of Hays; one son, Terry Klepper (Mary) of Salina; and her brother, Eugene "Gene" Dressler (Gertrude) of Wagner, S.D. Virginia was preceded in death by daughter, Cheryl Philippi (Mike and his wife Kayleen Yager); and son, Daryl Klepper (Janice). Virginia was blessed with 20 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren.

Open visitation will be held at Bryant Funeral Home from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m., Friday, Dec. 6, 2024. The Altar Society Rosary will be held at 4 p.m., and the Parish Rosary at 7 p.m. Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 7, 2024, at Bryant Funeral Home with Father Prakash Kola presiding. Interment will follow at the Pleasant View Cemetery in Claflin, Kansas. Virginia Klepper, age 96

Donald C. “Don” Hoover, 73, Hays, died Sunday, December 1, 2024 at Ellis Good Samaritan Society.

He was born February 9, 1951 in Hays, the son of Herbert C. “Herb” and Wilma J. (Rupp) Hoover. Don graduated from St. Joseph’s Military Academy in 1969, and in 1971 he earned an Associate Degree in diesel mechanics from Northwest Kansas Vo-Tech in Goodland. He was employed by Rupp’s Inc., Central Prairie Implement, Och’s Inc., and Carrico Implement. On December 30, 1969 he was united in marriage to Jolene Smith in Hays, and they celebrated nearly 55 years of marriage. His memberships included the Schoenchen St. Anthony Third Degree Knights of Columbus Council #4166 and the Smoky Hill Pheasants Forever Chapter 424 where he enjoyed helping with the annual banquets and youth hunts. Don was a Kansas City Chiefs fan and he enjoyed traveling, watching MASH, motorcycle rides on his Honda Gold Wing, and hunting dove, pheasant, and occasionally quail. He was always happy to gather with his buddies and prepared to tell many good jokes.

Survivors include his wife Jolene of Hays, three daughters, Alisa Caruthers, of Hays, Traci Hoover of Topeka, and Brenna Sherlock and husband Bryon of Hays, a brother, Fred Hoover of Hays, five sisters, Mary Metz and husband Bill of Berryton, Carol Neihardt and husband Nelson of Topeka, Connie Sheldon of Hays, Sue Hoover of Hays, and Janet Kuhn and husband Ed of Walker, and four grandchildren, Alex Caruthers of Hays, Taylor Daugherty of Topeka, Mckenzi Hoover and fiancé Trent Nickleson of Pratt, and Kooper Sherlock of Hays.

Donald 'Don' Hoover, age 73

Phyllis Kay Bosley, 85, passed away November 25, 2024, at Harry Hynes Inpatient Unit in Wichita, Kansas surrounded by loved ones. She was born May 17, 1939, to Glen and Pearl (White) Bantam in El Dorado Township, Harlan County, Nebraska. Phyllis married her high school sweetheart, Howard Bosley on August 24, 1958, in Orleans, Nebr. Howard preceded her in death, passing away in May of 2022.

Coming from communities in Nebraska and Kansas, Phyllis was a Great Bend resident since the early 1970s. She graduated from Orleans High School. She believed in a life of servant leadership and was active in her community; a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Great Bend and Ellsworth where she served on many committees throughout her life and was there for anyone in that community. She was a member of the P.E.O. sisterhood. Phyllis was an avid quilter and enjoyed showing and sharing her quilts with others. Many of her quilts were shared projects with her mother, Pearl, and mother-in-law, Helen.

Survivors include three sons, Gene (Cindy) Bosley, Robert (Tammy) Bosley, Eric (Jennifer) Bosley; eleven grandchildren, Brandon (Bree), Melanie, Chancelor, Layne, Wright, Shane, Wynn, Hope, Andrew, Grant, and William Bosley; great granddaughter, Scarlett Bosley; two step-granddaughters, Ashley Smith and Mallory (Austin) Case; and four step-greatgrandchildren, Emma Stroda, Kade Benedict, Carter Case, and Apollo Smith. Phyllis Bosley, age 85

Emil D. Potter, Jr., 65, passed away November 30, 2024, in Hutchinson, Kansas. He was born on August 15, 1959, in Larned, Kansas, to Emil D. and Diana (Cole) Potter. On September 3, 1980, he married Genea Slankard in Great Bend, Kansas.

A lifetime area resident, Emil worked as a security guard both at Larned State Correctional Facility as well as Red Barn Pet Products, and as an assembler at Primus. He enjoyed playing bass, fishing, wood working, gardening, and spending time with family.

Survivors include his wife of the home; daughter, Stephanie Bolt and husband James of Hoisington; granddaughter, Hannah Potter of Hoisington; two great-grandsons, Caiden Bitter and Brayden Fry; two sisters, Elva Potter and Tina Johnson, both of Great Bend; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will take place from noon to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, December 5, 2024, with family receiving guests from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., all at Bryant Funeral Home. Marleen Cassie (Shannon) Davison, 39, passed away Nov. 28, 2024, in Claflin. She was born Nov. 20, 1985, in Wheatridge, Colo. to Michael DeCesare and Kathleen “Katie” (Shannon) Houp.

Cassie married Kevin Davison Feb. 17, 2010. They moved to Great Bend on Nov. 7, 2017. She previously worked for Benefit Management Incorporated. She kept very busy owning and operating a rentals management company, The Dog House Bar, keeping the books for her husband’s construction business, traveling, and going to her son’s activities. She loved spending time with friends and family and going to the lake every summer. Cassie was very creative and loved to create many crafts. She had a big heart and will be missed by all who knew her.

Survivors include her husband, Kevin Davison; four sons, Devin Ray Davison, Mason Ray Davison, Ethan Ray Davison, Brayden Ray Davison; mother, Kathleen “Katie” Houp; stepfather, Gary Houp; father, Michael DeCesare, and her beloved Great Danes. She was preceded in death by Brother, Michael Colin Shannon.

Patrick Joseph “Pat” Kern, 62, passed away Nov. 25, 2024, at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita. He was born on May 9, 1962, in Great Bend, to Terry and Marie (Heckens) Kern.

A lifetime Great Bend resident, Pat was the owner/operator of Kern Floor Service. He was raised in the catholic faith, enjoyed wood working and mechanic work, and watching his grandsons’ activities.

Survivors include son, Rex Kern and wife Lacey of Great Bend; two grandsons, Trenton Kern and Kale Kern, both of Great Bend; mother, Marie Kern; two sisters, Loretta Murphy and husband James, and Lisa Mohr, all of Great Bend; nieces and nephews, Jared Kern and wife Shelby, Madison and Dalton Murphy, and Taylor, Kylee and Slade Mohr; and great nephew and niece, Jett and Nova Kern.

He is preceded in death by his father; and brother, Michael “Mike” Kern.

Patrick 'Pat' Kern, age 62

Ruby Ellen McAdoo Smith Coleman, age 77, of Norman, Okla. passed away on Nov. 19, 2024. She was born Aug. 8, 1947, to Stewart Leslie McAdoo and Josie Edna McAdoo (Vanhoutan) in Stockton. She is the seventh child of 11 children.

Ruby went to school in Russell her whole life. She went to Fossil Creek school and graduated from Russell High School in 1966. She met Keith Smith in 1965 and married in 1966. In this union they had four daughters. They later divorced. She met and married Donald Coleman and had one daughter in the marriage. They later divorced.

Ruby lived in a numerous places: Albert for sevem years, Arapahoe, Neb. for 10 years, Otis-Bison area for three years, Russell from 1984-2011. From Russell she moved to the Great Bend area for nine years before making her home in Norman, Okla. She enjoyed quilting, bowling, writing poetry, sewing, doing word searches, drawing and painting, playing her games on her IPAD, coloring, and watching Hallmark Movies.

She attended beauty school right after high school. She worked in healthcare for many years. She cleaned and drove the city bus for Russell for many years. She worked in convenience stores and a grocery store, as well as a department store. Her last job was driving people to and from their appointments. She loved being able to help people.

She is survived by her children: Sherry Fleming and Pamela Smith of Norman, Okla., Regina Jacobs of Hays, Sarah Smith-Orr of Topeka, and Stacey (Duncan) Holley of Hays; 12 grandchildren: Marcus (Jen), Tricia, Tony Jr, Chyna, Timothy, Afrika, DaShawn, Khalil, Marla, Tamia, Donatello, Stefan. 12 Great-Grandchildren: Eric, Darious, Javontae, Brayleigh, Genesis, Brysen, Maliyah, Tiana, Miles, Monroe, Jude, Sloane; siblings Josie Doty (Larry deceased), Evelyn Monroe (Leroy deceased), Mary Pollock, Edna Coyle (Robert), William McAdoo (Carol), Larry McAdoo (Darlene). And a host of nieces, nephews, cousins.The family is having a celebration of life service on Dec. 7, 2024, in Russell at the Elks Lodge from 10 a.m.- 2 p.m. There will be a short service with lunch afterwards.
