Peggy Sharon Johnson, 80, passed away
October 8, 2024, surrounded by loved ones at Harry Hynes Hospice Center,
Wichita, Kansas. She was born on July 5, 1944, in Vernon, Texas, to William and
Christine (Hicks) Temple. On April 28, 1962, she married David Michael Johnson
in Borger, Texas. He passed away on October 30, 2014.

A resident of Great Bend since 1975,
Peggy worked as a homemaker and assisted with the family business, 
M &amp; M Equipment. She was a member of First Christian Church and enjoyed
spending her time landscaping and working in her flower beds.

Survivors include son Mike Johnson and
wife Linda of Great Bend; two grandsons, Chad Johnson of Wichita and Kyle
Johnson of Casper, Wyoming; two brothers, Rex Temple and wife Debbie of Odessa,
Texas, and Dearl Temple of Rio Hondo, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her
husband and parents.

Funeral service take place at 10:30
a.m. Tuesday, October 15, 2024, at Bryant Funeral Home, with Reverend Joshue
Leu presiding. Interment will follow at Great Bend Cemetery. Visitation will be
from noon to 8:00 p.m. Monday, October 14, 2024, at Bryant Funeral Home, with
family receiving guests from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Memorials have been designated

Arlyn Kent Steinert, 73, passed away Oct. 6, 2024, at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita. He was born Nov. 16, 1950, in Great Bend, to Paul and Nima (Ochs) Steinert. Arlyn married Marcell Schwein, then later married Cynthia “Cindy” (Roush) March 5, 1977, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Milberger.

Arlyn, a resident of Hoisington, had been a longtime employee of Great Bend Feeding (I.L.S.), serving as a heavy equipment operator, retiring Dec. 31, 2021. He proudly served his country during the Vietnam War in the U.S. Army and was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Hoisington, and Life Member of V.F.W. Post 6240 Canteen, Russell. He enjoyed old westerns and word searches, but above all, Arlyn cherished his time spent with family.

Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Cindy Steinert; one son, Jason Steinert of Hoisington; one brother, Dennis Steinert and wife Jane of Russell; two sisters, Donna Donovan and husband Gerald of Hoisington and Carol Herthel of Overland Park; one sister-in-law Kay Steinert of Hoisington; daughter of the heart, Ona Marshall of Hoisington; four grandchildren, Brock Steinert, Troy White, Preston Florian and Whitney Wikoff; and numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by Cindy’s siblings, Kirk Roush of Dallas, Kelly Roush and wife Sue of Lebanon, Kan., and Connie Tholstrup and husband Mike of Concordia; and their respective families. He was preceded in death by a child, Brian Steinert; and a brother, Elton Steinert.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 11, 2024, at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Hoisington, with Rev. Wayne Baldyga and Rhonda Templing, SAM, presiding. Michael Allen Baldwin, 66, passed away Sept. 29, 2024, at Family Health and Rehabilitation Center in Wichita. He was born Jan. 20, 1958, in Great Bend to Kent and Gladys (Radke) Baldwin.

Michael worked in the restaurant industry. His love for music made him a talented musician, creating his own bands called Dos, Creeping Shadows, and Skinny. He enjoyed playing golf and bowling. He was of the Catholic Faith.

Survivors include his father, Kent Baldwin; son, Taylor of Winfield; daughter; Amanda of Kechi; sister; Diana Schuster and her husband Stan of Great Bend; stepbrother; Kirk Wiesner and wife Terri of San Diego, Calif.; stepsister, Terri Hughes and her husband Rick of Wichita. He was preceded in death by his mother, Gladys (Radke) Baldwin; stepmother, Ellen Baldwin, and an infant sister Susan Baldwin.

Joseph Frederick “Joe” Danek, II, 71,
passed away October 2, 2024, at his home in Great Bend, Kansas. He was born on
February 5, 1953, in Lincoln, Nebraska, to Joseph and Elizabeth “Betty”
(Musenbrock) Danek.

Living in Great Bend the majority of
his life, Joe worked as a substation maintenance manager for Sunflower Electric
Power Corporation prior to his retirement. He was a volunteer for the Barton
County Historical Society and member of the Knights of Columbus Council #862.
Joe was a smart man, with a mathematical mind and ability to teach himself many
useful skills, like small engine repair. He enjoyed waterfowl hunting,
particularly geese, was known as a jokester and very onery, a caregiver, and a
very giving and generous man.

Survivors include three brothers,
David Danek and wife Cheryl of Grand Island, Nebraska, Richard Danek and wife
Sharon of Topeka, and Michael Danek and wife Tammy of Fulmouth, Virgina; two
sisters, Marie Hutchison and husband John of Miami, Oklahoma, and Mary Bailey and
husband Randy Springfield, Illinois; and numerous nieces, nephews, and loved
ones.

Visitation will take place from noon
to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 9, 2024, with family received guests from 6:00
p.m. to 7:00 p.m., and Knights of Columbus Rosary at 7:00 p.m., all at Bryant

Stoss, 84, passed away peacefully August 28, 2024, at Providence St. Joseph
Medical Center in Burbank, California. He was born April 17, 1940, in Great
Bend, Kansas, to James &amp; Ethel (Bartonek) Stoss, Sr.

John
obtained a bachelor’s at Fort Hays State University and worked as a sports reporter
for the Great Bend Tribune. He moved to Salinas, Calif., where he resided for
thirty years. He became a talented, published author of poems, screenplays, and
songs. He had an artist’s heart and created breathe taking paintings. His
talent knew no bounds. He loved to travel the world and experience different
cultures. His greatest joy was spending time with his friends, who will miss
him.

Survivors
include sister; Bernice Neeland of Great Bend, nieces; Debbie New of Olmitz,
Bonita (Tom) Penka of Olmitz, Roberta (Tony) Spangenberg of Hudson, Diane (Jim)
King of Pittsburg, Trish (Patrick) Bryant of Salina, nephews; Craig Neeland,
and Steve (Lisa) Neeland of Great Bend. He was preceded in death by his parents
and brother, James Stoss, Jr.

Cremation has taken place. Graveside
service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 11, 2024, at St. Ann
Cemetery in Olmitz, with Father Warren Stecklein presiding. Memorials have been

John Stoss, age 84

Alexis Ragan Crowther, 36, passed away Oct. 1, 2024, at her home in Wichita. She was born with her twin brother, Cody, Sept. 28, 1988, in Wichita, to Alan and Lori (Kaiser) Crowther. The family moved to Great Bend in 1990.

Alexis was a 2007 Great Bend High School graduate. She went on to receive her bachelor’s in criminology at Kansas State University, then a master’s degree in criminal justice at Wichita State University. She quickly made Wichita her home. Alexis began working in 2016, at the Wichita Area Sexual Assault Center as a court advocate, where she stood along survivors facing the legal system. She then transitioned to an Advocacy Coordinator and found her passion raising awareness.

Alexis was an avid sports fan of her favorite teams, K-State Wildcats and Chiefs, and loved to travel and watch the games with family and friends. She enjoyed playing tennis and assembling jigsaw puzzles. She had a generous heart and loved making gifts for her family and friends. Alexis adored and loved her nephews dearly and was quick to scoop them up on visits.

Survivors include her parents Alan and Lori (Kaiser) Crowther of Great Bend; her twin brother, Cody Crowther and his wife Kristin of Arlington, Texas; grandparents, Charles and Carol Crowther of Missoula, Mont.; grandfather, David Foss of Great Bend; nephews, Coleman and Conrad Crowther, and baby Crowther due in December. Additionally, Alexis was survived and loved by her aunts, uncles, cousins, coworkers, and many friends. She was preceded in death by her grandmother Dana Foss and grandfather Vernon Kaiser.

Alexis Crowther, age 36

Stephen Craig Richter, 65, passed away
October 1, 2024, at Hays Medical Center, Hays, Kansas. Stephen was a beloved
member of the communities of Ellinwood, Kansas where he worked and Great Bend
Kansas where he lived. He was known for his kind and loving spirit, showing
genuine interest and concern for the lives of the people around him. Stephen
was known for his devotion to his family, especially his grandchildren, and his
love and support of those in his community.

He was born on July 1, 1959, in
Syracuse, Kansas, to Donald and Peggy (Waddle) Richter. He graduated from
Syracuse High School and, through his participation in athletics, began a
lifelong love of sports. Stephen moved to Lawrence after high school where he
attended the University of Kansas and began his career as a produce manager at
Food-4-Less. Stephen was previously married to Susan Stambaugh in Lawrence, and
they would be blessed with three daughters. Stephen would be known throughout
the rest of his life for his love of family, love of Jayhawks, and quality
produce!

Stephen moved to Great Bend becoming a
lifelong resident in 1981. Although living in Great Bend, Stephen developed a
devotion to the community of Ellinwood. He was a long-time employee of
Ellinwood Family Foods where he took great pride in the quality of produce
available to the community and the service he gave to every customer. While at
the grocery store, Stephen started working part time with the Ellinwood
Recreation Commission and in 2020, Stephen humbly accepted his dream job as Director
where he served the community of Ellinwood for the remainder of his life. Stephen
became a pillar of the community, not because of wealth or position but,
because everyone knew he was the biggest fan of the community and was devoted
to the success of Ellinwood students. In addition to his involvement with
Recreation Commission, he was a member of the Ellinwood Chamber of Commerce,
Ellinwood Eagle Booster board member, Ellinwood HS FCA sponsor, and had
previously taught children at First Southern Baptist in Great Bend and Awanas
in Ellinwood.

His love of community was surpassed
only by his devotion to God and his love for his family. Survivors include
daughters, Taasha Smith and husband Todd of Lenexa, Stesha Rathbun and husband
Keith of Garden City, and Marisha McDonald and husband Shawn of Goodyear,
Arizona; ten grandchildren, Jett, Aniston, Ellsie and Vivie Smith, Jakobe,
Porter, and Baker Rathbun, and Cohen, Eily, and Foster McDonald; mother Peggy;
three brothers, Thomas Richter and wife Carrie Ann of Edmond, Oklahoma, Michael
Richter and wife Lori of Goddard, and Brian Richter and wife Kim of Sterling;
and seven nieces and nephews, Scott Richter and wife Megan, Ryan Richter and
wife Tessa, Cody Richter, Cameron Richter, Taylor Richter, Blake Richter, and
Riley Richter.

He is preceded in death by his father,
Donald.

p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Sunday, October 6, 2024, with family receiving guests from
4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., all at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend, Kansas.

along with Stephen’s son-in-law Todd Smith. Interment will follow at Lakin

October 1, 2024, at Hays Medical Center, Hays, Kansas. Stephen was a beloved
member of the communities of Ellinwood, Kansas where he worked and Great Bend
Kansas where he lived. He was known for his kind and loving spirit, showing
genuine interest and concern for the lives of the people around him. Stephen
was known for his devotion to his family, especially his grandchildren, and his
love and support of those in his community.He was born on July 1, 1959, in
Syracuse, Kansas, to Donald and Peggy (Waddle) Richter. He graduated from
Syracuse High School and, through his participation in athletics, began a
lifelong love of sports. Stephen moved to Lawrence after high school where he
attended the University of Kansas and began his career as a produce manager at
Food-4-Less. Stephen was previously married to Susan Stambaugh in Lawrence, and
they would be blessed with three daughters. Stephen would be known throughout
the rest of his life for his love of family, love of Jayhawks, and quality
produce!Stephen moved to Great Bend becoming a
lifelong resident in 1981. Although living in Great Bend, Stephen developed a
devotion to the community of Ellinwood. He was a long-time employee of
Ellinwood Family Foods where he took great pride in the quality of produce
available to the community and the service he gave to every customer. While at
the grocery store, Stephen started working part time with the Ellinwood
Recreation Commission and in 2020, Stephen humbly accepted his dream job as Director
where he served the community of Ellinwood for the remainder of his life. Stephen
became a pillar of the community, not because of wealth or position but,
because everyone knew he was the biggest fan of the community and was devoted
to the success of Ellinwood students. In addition to his involvement with
Recreation Commission, he was a member of the Ellinwood Chamber of Commerce,
Ellinwood Eagle Booster board member, Ellinwood HS FCA sponsor, and had
previously taught children at First Southern Baptist in Great Bend and Awanas
in Ellinwood.His love of community was surpassed
only by his devotion to God and his love for his family. Survivors include
daughters, Taasha Smith and husband Todd of Lenexa, Stesha Rathbun and husband
Keith of Garden City, and Marisha McDonald and husband Shawn of Goodyear,
Arizona; ten grandchildren, Jett, Aniston, Ellsie and Vivie Smith, Jakobe,
Porter, and Baker Rathbun, and Cohen, Eily, and Foster McDonald; mother Peggy;
three brothers, Thomas Richter and wife Carrie Ann of Edmond, Oklahoma, Michael
Richter and wife Lori of Goddard, and Brian Richter and wife Kim of Sterling;
and seven nieces and nephews, Scott Richter and wife Megan, Ryan Richter and
wife Tessa, Cody Richter, Cameron Richter, Taylor Richter, Blake Richter, and
Riley Richter.He is preceded in death by his father,

Stephen Richter, age 65

Sue A Reiser, 82, passed away
September 29, 2024, at Research Medical Center, Kansas City, Missouri. She was
born on June 13, 1942, in Okmulgee, Oklahoma, to Robert and Mary Ellen (Henson)
Hamill. On August 26, 1967, she married Larry Reiser in Great Bend. He passed
on August 17, 2011.

Prior to becoming a longtime resident
of Great Bend, Sue started her working career in radio at WKY in Oklahoma City.
Once she relocated, she worked in different areas of USD 428, working as a
lunch lady, to school secretary for Lincoln Elementary, to secretary for the assistant
superintendent. Sue was a member of Prince of Peace Parish while in Great Bend.
After moving to Kansas City in 2011, she became a member of St. Anne’s Catholic
Church. Sue also enjoyed attending mass while a resident of St Anthony’s Senior
Living. She was dedicated to her faith and church, volunteering where needed
and serving as a youth mentor. Along with that, she was dedicated to her people,
always putting everyone before herself and was a fantastic person, friend,
family member. Sue had the gift of gab, could make anyone laugh, and was the
best storyteller. Even as the life of the party, Sue understood the importance
of a good cry and to never take anything for granted.

Survivors include daughter, Jennifer
Reiser and partner Amy Fowler of Kansas City, Missouri; grandson, Ashton
Reiser; sister, Mary Ellen Roberts and husband Cliff of Oklahoma City,
Oklahoma; and sister-in-law, Marilyn Hamill of St. Louis.

She is preceded in death by her
husband; son, Mark Reiser; her parents; and brothers, Robert Hamill, Jr. and
Joseph Hamill.

Darwin Paul Schartz, 63, passed away
September 14, 2024, at his home in Hoisington, Kansas. He was born on July 3, 1961,
in Great Bend, to Arlin and Ila (Seitzenger) Schartz.

A lifetime Barton County resident,
Darwin was a 1980 graduate from Great Bend High School. He worked as a farm
hand for Schnieder Alfalfa. Darwin was a quiet and simple man, who was a jack
of all trades and liked tinkering on vehicles.

Survivors include siblings, Gerry
Schartz (Sissy) of Great Bend, Larry Schartz (Joella) of Great Bend, Tanya Schroeder
(Leonard) of Great Bend, Steven Schartz (Lisa) of Lakeland, Florida, Kala
Muller of Ellinwood, Kent Schartz of Great Bend, and Darryl Schartz of Great
Bend; nephews, Rusty Purcell, Eppie Sandoval, Derek Muller; niece, Jessica

Oscar
Ruperto Espinosa, 79, passed away September 9, 2024, at Diversicare of Larned
in Larned, Kansas. He was born September 1, 1945, to Joe and Natalia (Ramirez)
Espinosa in Great Bend.

Oscar
married Shari Kagle August 8, 1970, in Great Bend. He was one of Jehovah’s
witnesses. He most recently worked as a fabricator for Primus Sterilizer, Great
Bend, retiring in 2007, and previously worked for Essex in Hoisington. He was a Vietnam veteran with the United States Army. Oscar was
an excellent cook that could be found in the kitchen making salsa with his
bounty of ingredients from his garden. He was known to many as "Burrito
Man", which he answered to joyfully. Oscar was a man of many talents and
loved to sing while playing the guitar. He found relaxation in casting a line,
fishing. But his greatest love was his cherished wife, children, grandchildren,
family, and friends.

Survivors
include his wife of 54 years, Shari Espinosa; three sons: Jason Espinosa of
Hoisington, Vance Espinosa of McPherson, Matthew Espinosa and his wife Sheri of
Albert; sisters, Jane Stejskal of Great Bend, Lalita Semon and her husband Mark
of Wichita; five brothers: Joseph Espinosa of Great Bend, Butch Espinosa of
Great Bend, Lawrence Espinosa and wife Karla of Great Bend, Gilbert Espinosa
and his wife Cindy of St. Louis, MO, Robert Espinosa and his wife Barbara of

John Edward Elliott, 77, passed away
September 3, 2024, surrounded by loved ones at Medicalodges Great Bend, Kansas.
He was born January 16, 1947, in Logansport, Indiana, to Richard and Dorothy
(Bobeck) Elliott. On March 25, 1972, he married Carol Tegarden in Great Bend.

A resident of Great Bend for 74 years,
John worked as a Manufacturing Engineer at Great Bend Industries for 46 years
prior to his retirement. He was a former member of the United States Junior
Chamber (Jaycees). John was a diehard fan of the Kansas Jayhawks, classic rock
and roll, NASCAR and drag racing. He was a diligent man, who took great pride
in his lawn and vehicle maintenance. Above all, John loved spending time with
his family.

Survivors include his wife Carol, of
the home; sons, Chad Elliott and wife Crystal of Great Bend, and Jason Elliott
and wife Marci of Fort Worth, Texas; daughter, Kristi Stegman and husband Kevin
of Great Bend; ten grandchildren, Drew Dewitt and Ethan Stegman, both of Great
Bend, Blake Stegman of Ellinwood, Jaydan Davis and Breckyn Elliott, both of

John Elliott, age 77

Earl Allen Schmidt, 95, passed away on Aug. 16, 2024, surrounded by family at River Bend Assisted Living, Great Bend. He was born on Aug. 20, 1928, in rural Barton County to Henry and Anna (Unruh) Schmidt. In March 1948, he married Charlotte “Janice” Flick in Pawnee Rock.&nbsp;

A lifetime area resident, Earl worked as a farmer and drove a school bus for Pawnee Rock Schools for 35 years. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, as well as the Pawnee Rock Lions Club. He enjoyed collecting and restoring tractors, and square dancing in his younger years.&nbsp;

Survivors include his wife of 76 years, Janice; two sons, Michael Schmidt and wife Janet of Cornelius, Ore., and Dennis Schmidt and wife Terrie of Cape Coral, Fla.; daughter, Brenda Girard of Hays; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.&nbsp;&nbsp;

He is preceded in death by his parents and eight siblings.&nbsp;

Earl Schmidt, age 95

Richard Gene Michel, Jr., 90, died September 25, 2024, at Clara Barton Hospital, Hoisington, Kansas. He was born February 16, 1934, on the family farm in rural Rawlins County, Kansas, the son of Richard F. Michel, Sr. and Dora (Wicke) Michel. Richard graduated from Atwood High School in 1952. He then proudly served in the United States Navy during the Korean War on the U.S.S. Midway as an E-5.

On July 14, 1974, he married Judy Allen in Topeka, Kansas. Together they raised four children on the farm northeast of Atwood, Kansas. He was a member of the Atwood Redeemer Lutheran Church where he was very active and sang in the church choir. Richard was an active member of the Herndon V.F.W. #1368 and the Atwood American Legion Post # 46. He enjoyed bowling and was always willing to help anyone in need. Richard and Judy recently moved to Hoisington to be closer to family where he enjoyed watching his grandkids activities and fellowshipping at the Hoisington American Legion.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Judy Michel of the home; and four children, Rick Michel of Topeka, Cindy (David) Heuer of Hanover, Kylie (Chris) Kinman of Hoisington, Kenzie Michel of Wichita,; brother, Gilbert Michel of Newton; sister, Sylvia Meyer of Topeka; ten grandchildren, Richard James Michel, Shaelyn (Steve) Brouhard, Kortney Michel, Daria (Derek) Mueting, Nick and Adria Heuer, Peyton, Karson, and Bryson Kinman, and Beckett Michel Decker; and two great grandchildren, Hunter and Emmett Brouhard.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Bernice Morgan, sister-in-law, Cathi Michel, and brother-in-law, William Meyer.

Visitation will be 1 – 5 p.m., Saturday at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home, Hoisington.

He was born February 16, 1934, on the family farm in rural Rawlins County, Kansas, the son of Richard F. Michel, Sr. and Dora (Wicke) Michel. Richard graduated from Atwood High School in 1952. He then proudly served in the United States Navy during the Korean War on the U.S.S. Midway as an E-5.On July 14, 1974, he married Judy Allen in Topeka, Kansas. Together they raised four children on the farm northeast of Atwood, Kansas. He was a member of the Atwood Redeemer Lutheran Church where he was very active and sang in the church choir. Richard was an active member of the Herndon V.F.W. #1368 and the Atwood American Legion Post # 46. He enjoyed bowling and was always willing to help anyone in need. Richard Michel Jr, age 90

Alberta Cecilia Ledesma, 92, died September 24, 2024, at her home surrounded by family. She was born April 8, 1932, in Garden City, Kansas, the daughter of Carlos and Virginia (Orozco) Mancha.

On January 18, 1952, she married Ermenes “Hernenez” aka Herman Ledesma in Great Bend, Kansas. He preceded her in death on September 5, 1985.

A longtime Hoisington resident, Alberta was a homemaker busy raising eleven children. She was a member of Faith Community Church in Great Bend. Alberta was dedicated to her children most of all and enjoyed time spent with them, whether it was shopping, dining out, or just visiting with her extended family. Her family describes her as sweet and simple, someone who loved sewing, crocheting, quilting, Mexican bands, and dancing. She was also a fantastic cook and baker, renowned for her tamales.

She is survived by her eleven children; Herman Ledesma of Great Bend, Patricia Hess of Omaha, Nebraska, David Ledesma and wife Melissa of Great Bend, Ricardo Ledesma and wife Bing of Hoisington, Monica Johnson of Gainsville, Florida, Rachel Hemken of Great Bend, Carolina Martin and husband Sonny of Hoisington, Daniel Ledesma and wife Narrah of Lyons, Angelo Ledesma and wife Lisa of Great Bend, Alberta Torres and husband Neftalie of Newton, and Thomas John Ledesma of Great Bend; numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren and extended family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband Henenez and her beloved dog, Shy.

A private family graveside inurnment service will be held in the Great Bend Cemetery at a later date.

Frances Joiner, 102, passed away September 21, 2024, at Clara Barton Hospital
in Hoisington, Kansas. She was born September 12, 1922, in Sterling, Kan., to
James and Sylvia (Webb) Young.

With her
father passing at a young age, Mary grew up as the caretaker for her family,
looking after her brothers and sisters. She was witty and humorous and would
often play tricks, to the dismay of her mother. Later in life, she married
Andrew Jackson “Jack” Joiner, Jr. November 25, 1978, in Ellinwood.&nbsp; He died March 5, 2008.

Mary worked
as a telephone operator while living in Oregon and later owned and operated a
very successful and sought after newsstand in Lyons, next to the bus stop.
After retirement, she loved going to the senior center, spending time with
friends, playing dominoes, and enjoyed traveling. Mary quickly found love in
her two Schnauzers, Peppy and Dixie and her cat, Annie. She was a member of the
First United Methodist Church.

Survivors
include her stepsons; Jack Joiner and wife Tricia, Donnie Joiner and wife Rosie,
and Mike Joiner; thirteen step grandchildren, forty-four step great
grandchildren, and eighteen step great great grandchildren; nephews, James
Myers and Larry Brown; and nieces, Nancy Gerard, Donna Hanover and Brenda
Christiansen. She was preceded in death by her parents, beloved husband, and
stepsons Chris Sollars and Kevin Joiner.

Mary Joiner, age 102

Dorothy Emma (Schmidt) Almquist, 100, La Crosse, passed away Sunday, Sept. 22, 2024, at Pawnee Valley Community Hospital, Larned.

Dorothy was born March 1, 1924, in rural McCracken, the daughter of John Frederick and Mollie (Rein) Schmidt. Her parents died when she was very young, and Dorothy and her brothers, Raymond John Schmidt, and Paul Michael Schmidt, were raised by their grandmother, Susanna Schmidt, as well as her Uncle Bill and Aunt Regina. Dorothy attended a one-room schoolhouse known as Brown School, District #2, north of Hargrave, from first through eighth grade. Dorothy was the salutatorian of the La Crosse Rural High School class of 1941. She graduated from Salt City Business College, Hutchinson, with a secretarial degree, and was employed at Kansas Power Company, Great Bend, for four years.

Dorothy’s adventurous spirit led her to Portland, Ore. in 1946. While there, she enjoyed her professional career as a legal secretary and spending time outdoors snow skiing and going to the beach. She had 12 years of many fond memories of enjoying life with friends.

During a visit back home to Kansas, a reconnection with a childhood acquaintance turned into a courtship. On Nov. 8, 1958, she married Arthur “Kenneth” Almquist at Zion Lutheran Church, Portland, Ore. They returned to Kansas where they made their home for over 50 years before Kenneth’s death Oct. 4, 2009.

Dorothy was baptized and confirmed at Peace Lutheran Church, rural Alexander, Kansas. She was a member of First Lutheran Church, WELCA,

Sixty Plus Club, and VFW Post #9076 Auxiliary, all of La Crosse. She was also involved in the election board, blood bank, Rush County Food Bank, and delivered Meals on Wheels.

Dorothy loved her home and took great pride in taking care of it. She made her home a treasured gathering place for friends and family.

Survivors include: one son, Brent Almquist of Clinton, Oklahoma; one daughter, Diane (Ken) Albin of Austin, Texas; three grandchildren, Clay Almquist of Clinton, Oklahoma, Katherine (Quinlan) Albin Koch of Red Wing, Minnesota, and Emma Albin of Tulsa, Oklahoma; two great grandchildren, Zayden Almquist and Zianna Almquist, both of Clinton, Oklahoma; three nephews, Danny (Debbie) Schmidt, Greg (Dawn) Schmidt, Gary (Karen) Schmidt, and their families; and cousin, Dave (Marietta) Wilson and family.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; an infant daughter, Sue Ann Almquist; her daughter-in-law, Virginia Gail Almquist; one grandson, Charlie Dale Almquist; two brothers and sister-in-law, Raymond John Schmidt, and Paul Michael Schmidt and wife Jeanie; two nephews Dennis Schmidt and Donald Schmidt; and an infant half-sister.

Visitation will be Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2024, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Janousek Funeral Home, La Crosse, with the family receiving friends from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Church visitation will be Thursday, Sept. 26, 2024, from 9 a.m. to 9:50 a.m. at the First Lutheran Church, La Crosse.

Daniel Thomas Hauck, 70, passed away
November 19, 2023, at Diversicare of Hutchinson. &nbsp;He was born January 18,
1953, in Hutchinson, Kansas, to Thomas Frank Hauck and Thelma Merleen (Leeper)
Hauck.

Daniel was a proud member of the
military, having served two terms in the United States Navy: from 1969 to 1973,
on the U.S.S. Jouett, and from 1977 to 1981, on the U.S.S. Coral
Sea.&nbsp;&nbsp;After being honorably discharged, he moved on to be a driver
and mechanic for Chism’s Trash Service, in Great Bend, Kansas. Daniel was not
just an employee, but a friendly face to all on his route, from passing out
candy for the kids, handing out treats for the furry friends, and being
followed around and recorded by teens that were interested in his work. &nbsp;

On February 14, 2000, he married the
love of his life, Janice Lynn Goans. To their union, Janice brought along her
daughter, Shawna, and Shawna’s daughter, Caitlin, whom he grew an
unconditional, lifelong bond with. Janice later passed away on April 22, 2007.
Daniel’s heart was shattered by this loss. While he left us much sooner than we
would have wanted, Daniel was ready to be back together with Janice for
eternity.

Survivors include&nbsp;his mother,
Thelma M. Hembree of Hutchinson; children, Shawna Goans of Lincoln, Nebraska,
and Kevin (spouse Tammi) Schreiner of Austin, Texas; grandchildren, Caitlin
Schmitt of Lincoln, Nebraska, Nola Schreiner of Austin, Texas, and Gibson
Schreiner of Austin, Texas; siblings, Mike Cooper of Hutchinson, Kelly (spouse
Milton) Clevenger of Colwich, and Amenda Lobstein of Hutchinson; goddaughter,
Leanda Love Mooney, Leadville, Colorado; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces,
and great-nephews. &nbsp;&nbsp;
He is preceded in death by his wife, Janice Lynn Hauck; his stepfather, George

Ermalee Merritt, 89, died Tuesday, September 17, 2024, at Mennonite Friendship Communities, South Hutchinson. &nbsp;She was born March 12, 1935, at Grace Hospital in Hutchinson, to parents, Frank B. Jones and Bertha O. (Rictor) Jones.

Ermalee graduated in 1953 from Reno Community High School, Nickerson. She married her high school sweetheart, Ancil M. Taylor of rural Sterling on October 25, 1953, at Church of Christ on 14th and Adams St., Hutchinson. To their union brought four children: DeeAnn, Maribeth, Max Alan and Lora Lee Taylor.

Ermalee and Ancil lived and farmed at the Taylor place in the rural Sterling area for a number of years prior to re-locating to Great Bend, in 1966. She was a former member of the 14th and Adams Church of Christ in Hutchinson and the Great Bend, Church of Christ at 12th and Stone. Ermalee was a current member of Eastwood Church of Christ, Hutchinson.&nbsp;

Ermalee and Ancil lost their son, Max, to cancer on January 10, 1986, in Great Bend. Ancil died on December 20, 1987, in Great Bend, also due to cancer. She later married Elmo Merritt on November 24, 1990, in Great Bend. &nbsp;They moved to Hutchinson. She was widowed a second time with his passing in 2017. Through all the sorrow and loss in her life, she pressed on, always faithful, hopeful and trusting in her Maker.

Ermalee was a devoted, loving and treasured wife, mother, “grammy,” “great-grammy,” sister, sister-in-law, aunt, niece and friend. Her bright spirit shined through when she offered joy, compassion and encouragement to others. Ermalee’s generosity, kindness and wit blessed many. Ever so stylish and fashionable, she specifically loved jewelry and hats. An accomplished seamstress throughout her lifetime, she made countless wearable and decorative works of art. Ermalee had a special gift for creating stunning floral and interior designs. She loved decorating her home for all the seasons and holidays. Ermalee’s energy, creativity and talent were amazing! She gave the best hugs and being wrapped in her embrace was one of the most comforting places to be. Being lucky enough to be loved by her was the most precious of gifts and she will be missed beyond measure.

Survivors include her three daughters and their spouses: DeeAnn and Jim Krueger of Wichita, Maribeth Benker of Great Bend, Lora and Brent Dungan of &nbsp;Wichita and Fort Collins, CO; six grandchildren, Christopher Krueger of Wichita, KS; Kelsy Krueger of Wichita, Corry (Fradd) Kelly and Justin of Great Bend, Maggie Dungan of Fort Collins, CO, Eva Dungan of Fort Collins, CO and Oliver Dungan of Wichita; great-grandchildren, &nbsp;RaeLynn Rowe and Kimber Rowe of Great Bend, Lennox Krueger of Wichita; and sisters, Ilene (Jones) Roth and Sue (Jones) Hill, all of Hutchinson.

Ermalee was preceded in death by additional family members including: her parents; in-laws Glenn G. and Helen E. Taylor; son-in-law Keith Benker; and step-grandson Kelly Benker; and numerous other valued and loved family members who went before her.&nbsp;

Memorial service will be 2:00 p.m. Sunday, October 6, 2024, at Eastwood Church of Christ, 2500 N. Plum, Hutchinson, with Wayne DeWindt officiating. &nbsp;Friends may sign the book from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Elliott Mortuary. Private family inurnment will take place in the Great Bend Cemetery, Great Bend.&nbsp;

Eldon Clarence Brown, 70, passed away Sept. 17, 2024, at University of Kansas Health Systems – Kansas City, Kansas. He was born on Jan. 5, 1954, in Ainsworth, Neb., to Everett and Wilma (Lake) Brown. On Aug. 25, 1973, he married Susan Owens in Vernon, Texas.&nbsp;

A long time Pawnee Rock resident, Eldon worked as a heavy equipment operator, most recently at Stone Sand Company. He was raised Methodist. Eldon enjoyed hunting, fishing, and spending time with his family.&nbsp;

Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Steve Groves and wife Tammy of Dundee, and Chris Brown of Osborne; daughter, Lisa Vonfeldt of Great Bend; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and numerous loved ones.&nbsp;

He is preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Ivan and Glen Brown; and sister, Maxine Davis.&nbsp;

Visitation will take place from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 22, 2024, with family receiving guests from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., all at Bryant Funeral Home. Patricia “Patty” Bahr, 83, passed away
September 15, 2024, at Riverbend Assisted Living in Great Bend, KS. She was
born August 9, 1941, to Henry and Frances (Schneider) Bahr. She grew up on the
family farm with her 10 siblings in rural Albert. She moved to Great Bend in
1993. 

Patty worked as a cook for the
Dominican Sisters for 29 years before retiring in 2013. She was a member of St.
Ann’s Catholic Church in Olmitz, where she was Eucharistic minister and member
of the Altar Society. She transferred her membership to Prince of Peace Parish
in Great Bend. Patty enjoyed working jigsaw and word search puzzles, reading,
and cats.

Survivors include brother, Henry
J. Bahr, of Albert; sisters, Sister Francella Bahr, Sister Jeannine Bahr and
Sister Teresa Bahr, ASC, all of Wichita; Joan (Ken) Schreiber and Donna (Eldon)
Keil of Overland Park; seven nieces and one nephew, and great nieces and great
nephews. 

She was preceded in death by her
parents; sisters, Frances Bahr and Sister Mary Ann Bahr, ASC; brothers, Father
Joseph Bahr and James Bahr.

Patricia 'Patty' Bahr, age 83

Francisco "Frank" Zamora Cortez Jr, 65, passed away at Ellinwood District Hospital on Sept. 14, 2024 surrounded by loved ones. Born in San Marcos, TX on July 13, 1959 to parents Francisco and Amelia (Zamora) Cortez. Frank graduated from Texas Tech University in 1983 after graduating he spent his career working in management at numerous hotels and restaurants. He married Connie Starns on April 10, 1990 in Wichita, KS. They have been residents of Ellinwood resident for 20 years.&nbsp;

Survivors include Wife, Connie Starns; Mother, Amelia Cortez; Children, Erica (Chris), Frank ( Abbi) and Steven (Bethany); Granddaughters, Sophia, Olivia, Ingrid, and Aria; Brothers, Tony and Gilbert; Sisters, Mary Alice, Pat, Gloria, and Yolanda. Frank also leaves behind numerous Nieces, Nephews, Aunts, Uncles, and close friends.

Francisco 'Frank' Zamora Cortez Jr, age 65

Helen Ruth
Cheely, 95, passed away September 16, 2024, at Brookdale Senior Living in Great
Bend, Kansas. She was born March 30, 1929, in Dodge City to William and Grace (Murphy)
Remling.

Ruth, as
many affectionately referred to her, grew up in Texas County, Oklahoma on the
family farm. She graduated as Valedictorian at Optima, Okla., grade school and
finished her diploma at Guymon High School. Ruth met the love of her life, Sgt.
James Preston Cheely at the Army Airfield in Liberal. They were married at his
parents’ home in Clearwater, South Carolina on April 11, 1945, two days before
James shipped out to WWII in France. 

After the
war victory, Ruth and James began life together in Oklahoma. They welcomed Ken
Cheely while living in Guyman. In 1950, Ruth and James relocated to Colorado
where James became a Depot Agent for the Missouri Pacific Railroad. They lived
in several small towns along the Missouri Pacific. While living in Lacrosse,
they had their second son, Ray Cheely. They retired to Great Bend where Ruth
worked as a detailed bookkeeper at Sears, Amerine Electric, Roy Rogers
Insurance Agency, and Ray A. Cheely, Chtd. She loved to volunteer her time at
the Barton County Historical Society where she had also served as a former
secretary. She was a member of the Christian Church in Utica and a life member
of the Order of the Eastern Star. Ruth found joy in visiting and fellowshipping
with friends. She could be found at the Senior Center enjoying a cup of coffee
and catching up with those she treasured. 

Ruth is
survived by son; Kenneth Cheely and his wife Virginia of Great Bend, grandson,
Michael Cheely and his wife Tami, great grandsons Preston Cheely and his wife
Riley, Caleb Cheely and Sarah Gonzales, great great granddaughter, Aysen
Cheely; daughter in law Sheryl Cheely of Great Bend, and many cherished
friends. She is preceded in death by her parents; beloved husband, James
Preston Cheely; son, Ray Cheely; and brother George Remling.

Graveside
service will take place at 2:00 p.m., Friday, September 20, 2024, at Great Bend
Cemetery with Rev. William F. Johnson presiding. Visitation will be held from
Noon to 8:00 p.m., Thursday, September 19, 2024, at Bryant Funeral Home, with
family receiving from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.&nbsp; Additional visitation will

Helen Cheely, age 95

David Jay Gordon, 68, passed away on Saturday, September 7, 2024, at Thorne Care Center in Hutchinson, KS. David was born November 3, 1955, in Hays, KS, the son of Hiram and Josephine (Dolezal) Gordon.

David graduated from Hoisington High School in 1974. He worked for Eaton Corp as a machinist welder for 15 years and Road Runner as a private contractor delivering public transportation buses. He enjoyed spending his evenings sitting on his porch visiting his neighbors and friends. That’s when he meet his neighbor and close friend Terry. On December 5, 1981, David married Janea Murphy. They were married for 34 years before her passing in 2016.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Janea; brother-in-law, Ronald Robertson; infant sister, Kathleen Gordon and nephew Travis Robertson.

David is survived by his sister, Michele Robertson; several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

David Gordon, age 68

Amy Ann Derley was born on Aug. 3,1979 in Larned, the daughter of Dale and Beth Zook. She passed away at her parents’ home on Sept. 12, 2024, at the age of 45 surrounded by her family. Pause for a moment and think back on a memory of Amy, see her smiling face. Remember the love she had for her family, friends and most importantly, her Lord Jesus Christ.

Amy grew up in Larned, her hobbies as a child were hosting many sleepovers with friends and acting as a mother hen to her cousins. During high school, her extracurricular activities included cheerleading, golf and state choir. She was honored to sing in Europe with the Kansas Ambassadors of Music. After school she worked at Ritzmans and on the family farm during the summers. In 1998, she graduated from Larned High School. Amy obtained an Associate Degree in Business from Highland Community College. She then returned to Larned and worked as the high school secretary for several years. She changed jobs and began working at American State Bank, where Amy met the love of her life, Jay Derley, in the Spring of 2004. Later they married on May 14, 2005 in Larned. 

In 2008, Amy and Jay moved to his family farm located between Lewis and Greensburg, where Amy was an active partner in the farm and ranch operations. She did it ALL from working cattle to delivering home-cooked meals. During that time, she enjoyed cooking, dressing to the nines, and being around family and friends. In March of 2010, Amy became what she always wanted to be, a mother. Amy and Jay were blessed with a beautiful daughter, Adrianna, and later that Fall, with Dallas their delightful son. Amy was a dedicated wife and mother always attending her children's events.

Amy was an active member of the Greensburg Global Methodist Church, serving as a Sunday School teacher and church board member. Amy felt God had tested her faith several times throughout the many hospitalizations and surgeries during her lifetime. When she was on hospice, Amy reported to a preacher in the family that she related most to Job’s stories in the Bible. One of the last tests of her faith was when Amy received the news that she was not a candidate for a heart and liver transplant by two different clinics.

Survivors include: husband, Jay Derley, two children, Adrianna Jolene and Dallas Wayne of the home, Lewis; her parents, Dale and Beth Zook, Larned; sister, Stacy (Michael) Trout and nephews Colborn and Zavier, Scott City; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Lester and Janet Derley, Lewis; sister-in-law, Johnna (Josh) Tyson, children Alyssa and Morgan Derley and Skyler Tyson, Overland Park; sister-in-law, Ronda (Ward) Scantlin, daughter Alex, Dayton, Ohio and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Amy was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Troy Derley, and a nephew, Noah Tyson.

Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday September 17, 2024, at Larned United Methodist Church with Pastor Jarred Smith and Rev. Angela De-Fisher presiding. Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 16, 2024, at Beckwith Mortuary, Larned. Interment will be in the Trotter Cemetery, Lewis. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Adrianna and Dallas Derley Education Fund in care of Beckwith Mortuary, PO Box 477, Larned, Kansas 67550.
