Treacyn Williams, a fifth grader at Eisenhower Elementary in Great Bend, knows that kindness can come in little ways. He recently received a giant $100 check from OPI &amp; Golden Belt Printing as the latest winner in Eagle Media's Make A Difference Contest.

"I can make a difference by telling someone have a nice day," Treacyn said.

All Barton County students, grades K-6, are eligible for the Make a Difference Contest, which will run for the duration of the 2025-26 school year. Overall,
this has been a very mild winter with an occasional brief cold period.&nbsp; High temperature records have been set.&nbsp; Nighttime lows have been mild overall.&nbsp; While many of us aren’t thrilled by winter,
it’s important to producers and even benefits all of us.&nbsp; Today, what are the benefits of winter, a
true winter.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; First,
let’s touch on the wheat crop.&nbsp; We plant
winter wheat, meaning it must accumulate cold to vernalize.&nbsp; If it doesn’t, it won’t flower.&nbsp; We aren’t likely in danger of this happening
but may flirt with the possibility of freeze damage.&nbsp; Wheat is most winterhardy at the start of
winter.&nbsp; As winter progresses, typically
temperatures warm and daylength increases, it becomes less winterhardy.&nbsp; With unseasonably warm temperatures, it can
break dormancy early and start to grow with the growing point emerging from the
soil at jointing.&nbsp; We figure here around
March 15th.&nbsp; If conditions
have it occur earlier and we have a cold snap, it can damage or even kill the
growing point and vascular system.&nbsp; Many
long time wheat producers can recall when this has happened.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Second,
a “real” winter helps with pest control and not just for producers.&nbsp; You have probably noticed how many flies,
ladybugs, and other insects are around on warmer days compared to normal.&nbsp; Extended cold never eliminates all of them
but helps keep many populations under lower levels.&nbsp; And winter means many insects have to come in
from south of here as they can’t overwinter.&nbsp;
If we continue this trend, they may be able to overwinter here.&nbsp; The same is true of diseases that normally
must blow in from the south.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; For
homeowners, it can cause premature opening of tree leaf and flower buds.&nbsp; It allows many vertebrate and invertebrate
pests to be more active than normal in lawns and farm fields.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; On
the precipitation front, warmer temperatures mean more rain, and unfortunately
freezing rain.&nbsp; And our heaviest
snowfalls occur when it’s in the 20s and low 30s.&nbsp; When temperatures are lower than that,
snowfall is typically lower and fluffier.

For most college students, the start of a new semester means finding the right buildings on campus, scouting out the best parking spots, and settling into a familiar routine of library sessions and coffee runs. But for two Fort Hays State University students, and for one semester, campus isn’t made of brick and mortar—it’s made of steel, salt water, and 106 days of horizon-chasing.

Mallory Palmer, an online Business Education senior from Osawatomie, and Tayton Roberts, a sophomore Political Science major from Olathe, are part of an elite group of Tiger explorers participating in a Semester at Sea experience. It is a program that transforms a cruise ship into a floating university, circumnavigating the globe to turn the world itself into a classroom.

While they are at different stages of their journey—Mallory having returned in 2025 and Tayton preparing to embark this January—the two have formed a unique bond, proving that even in a global program, the FHSU community remains tight-knit.

For both Mallory and Tayton, the seeds of this adventure were sown long before they reached college. Both girls discovered Semester at Sea on social media, watching students waking up in new countries every week.

“I always had it in the back of my mind that I wanted to do it,” Mallory recalled. After years of wondering ‘what if,’ she finally decided to stop dreaming and start doing. “I just decided to make it happen.”

Tayton felt a similar pull. A pre-law student with a passion for international relations, she was drawn to the opportunity of a lifetime. “I think it was the aspect that you get to see so many different countries, not just one,” Tayton said. “And you are with a group of American students, so it feels a little safer. You get to meet a lot of people from different places while sharing the same experience.”

The itinerary is nothing short of breathtaking. The voyage begins in Bangkok, Thailand. From there, the ship—housing roughly 600 students, faculty, and staff—becomes a moving bridge between cultures. The route spans three continents, visiting Vietnam, Malaysia, India, Kenya, South Africa, Ghana, Morocco, and Spain, before finally disembarking in Bremerhaven, Germany.

While at sea, students take a full 12-credit course load, including a mandatory core course in global studies. The credits are issued by Colorado State University and transferred back to FHSU, ensuring that while the students are seeing the world, they aren’t falling behind on their degrees.

For Mallory, the academic and social aspects blended seamlessly. “The ship's staff does a good job of preparing you,” she explained. “They did a pre-port the night before arriving in a country and gave you the basics... a heads-up on what to watch out for to stay safe and places you should visit.”

As Tayton prepares to leave, Mallory has stepped into a mentorship role, helping Tayton navigate the anxieties of packing four months of life into a tiny stateroom. Tayton’s current challenge? Fitting all her toiletries, clothes, and schoolbooks into two rolling duffels and a backpack.

“It’s surreal. I’m excited for Morocco and the African countries. I think Africa is so gorgeous. I really want to swim with sharks in South Africa and go on camel treks in Morocco.”

She has already used social media to connect with her future roommate, a student from South Carolina. “She seems amazing. I feel a lot better knowing that I will know someone.”

Stacey Lang, FHSU’s Study Abroad Coordinator, emphasizes that Semester at Sea is far more than a sightseeing tour. It is a rigorous exercise in global citizenship, a core value of the FHSU mission.

“This experience directly supports FHSU’s goal of developing engaged global citizen-leaders,” Lang said. “Students return with a broadened worldview, cultural competence, and leadership skills—qualities central to FHSU’s mission. They bring back global insights that enrich classroom discussion and campus culture.”

Mallory’s experience confirms this. When asked for her best advice, she didn’t talk about landmarks or museums; she talked about the internal shift that happens when you're thousands of miles from home.

Her primary takeaway is that the most meaningful growth happens when you “expect the unexpected.” She suggests that while preparation is vital, students should be brave enough to let the plan fall away. “Be flexible,” she noted, "and don't plan everything to a ‘T.’” For Mallory, being open to new foods and unplanned detours led to the highlight of her trip: the deep connections made with people around the world.

For Tayton, the upcoming voyage isn't just a personal milestone; it’s a professional one. As a future lawyer, she believes understanding the world is non-negotiable. “I think that having a good worldview is so important. Seeing three different continents will give me a diversity of knowledge. It applies to anything—learning to work with people, adapt, and just being flexible.”

As Tayton prepares to board the ship in Thailand, she carries with her the support of the FHSU Global Affairs and International Student Services as well as the wisdom of Mallory, her ‘Tiger’ predecessor.

As a part of ongoing efforts to modernize and enhance digital services, the city of Great Bend announced on Friday that it is transitioning its website and staff emails to a .gov domain. The new address, www.greatbendks.gov, will take effect when the city launches its updated site later this spring.

“We are very excited for this step in our website transformation,” said Public Relations Director Addison Crites. “We have spent meaningful time and effort these past six months upgrading our communication platforms to provide easy access for our citizens. Switching our domain to .gov ensures to the public that we are the first and foremost source of all city-related information.”

This shift will bring a higher level of transparency to website visitors as .gov domains are only available to U.S.-based government organizations.

Achieving .gov status requires accreditation and verification by the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA). This process includes meeting the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.census.gov/programs-surveys/gus/technical-documentation/methodology/population-of-interest1.html">U.S. Census Bureau’s criteria for classifying governments</a>. To be considered a government, entities must exist as an organized entity, have governmental character and substantial autonomy.

Entities must fall under a recognized class of government such as municipal corporations, public corporations or bodies corporate and politic. Governmental character is established when entity officers are either popularly elected or appointed by public officials. Substantial autonomy entails that an entity possesses fiscal and administrative independence.IT Director James Cell and Assistant Systems Administrator Robby Wilcox handled the accreditation process for the city.

“This move also strengthens our cybersecurity,” Cell said. “We have added DNSSEC records to provide authentication and integrity for DNS data, and because .gov domains are only issued to verified government entities, it becomes much harder for malicious actors to create fake websites or email addresses that could be used in phishing scams.”

The city is taking a department-by-department approach when moving email accounts from .net to .gov to make the migration a smooth experience.

“This gradual approach has helped minimize disruption and ease any concerns,” Cell said. “For most users, the transition has been seamless. The only exception is for those who use OneDrive or SharePoint. Shared files may take 24-48 hours to fully sync with desktop apps. During this time, all files remain available online.”

Only three departments remain that need to make the switch. The city expects to complete the full transformation by the end of the month.

Emails sent to the previous .net address will continue to deliver for up to nine years. However, the city encourages the public to adopt the new domain early. For the most up-to-date staff contact information, please visit the city’s website, hover over the “Departments” tab and select the first link listed titled “<a target="_blank" href="https://www.greatbendks.net/directory.aspx">Staff Directory</a>”. &nbsp;The City of Great Bend appreciates everyone’s patience as it completes this important email update.

You can't teach if you don't know. Kindric Castro, chair of USD 428's AI Integration Team, told the board of education on Monday that's why educating the educators about new artificial intelligence programs is vital to using the technology safely and responsibly. So far, he said, the teachers are invested.

"I ran a few classes at the high school a couple months ago - this was for teachers to use (Google) Gemini - and the rooms were packed full in every single class I did," he said. "Immediately after the session was over, they were already asking when we would have another session. Our staff wants to use AI and wants to learn more. We just need to provide the resources to do so."

Currently, Great Bend teachers have access to Google Workspace, which includes the AI program Gemini. But AI software comes in many forms, and the technology is new and ever-changing, so many educators are unsure how to use it. Castro said the Integration Team's goal is to educate teachers across all buildings in the district, then get the technology into classrooms for students to use.

"Currently, we have no student policy, and that's okay," he said. "Our students aren't using AI right now. That's what we're doing this for. But this means that student access and classroom expectations still remain undefined, which limits instructional use."

More educational sessions are planned at Great Bend High School and Great Bend Middle School in the coming weeks. Assistant Superintendent Joann Blevins said the district is just starting the process of filling the Integration Team so it can begin looking at which guidelines and guardrails need to be in place, and which AI tools will be serve the district.

Barton Community College officially swore in its new and re-elected Board of Trustees during Tuesday’s study session.

Trustees Kimberly Becker, Carl Helm, and John Moshier took the oath of office, joining Chair Mike Johnson and trustees Gary Burke and Dale Maneth.

Barton President Dr. Marcus Garstecki said the College is fortunate to have a board that is deeply committed to its students and the community.

“We appreciate the continued service of our returning trustees and look forward to working with those beginning a new term as we continue moving the college forward,” he said.

The board will elect its officers at its first regular meeting of the year, scheduled for Jan. 27.

Make a Difference Contest 

DENVER (AP) — Bo Nix broke his right ankle late in overtime of the Denver Broncos' divisional-round victory over Buffalo on Saturday and will have surgery that will sideline him for the rest of the playoffs.

Coach Sean Payton&nbsp;delivered the stunning news&nbsp;about his second-year quarterback in the aftermath of Denver's biggest win in a decade. Backup Jarrett Stidham, who is 1-3 as a starter in six seasons, will start the AFC championship game next weekend.

“Stiddy’s ready,” Payton said after returning to the postgame lectern to discuss the injury following&nbsp;Denver's 33-30 victory&nbsp;over Josh Allen and the Bills.

Payton said Nix got hurt on a keeper where he lost 2 yards and was tackled by safety Cole Bishop.&nbsp;Nix was limping after the play, but there was no indication that he suffered such a serious injury.

On the next play, Nix threw a deep pass to Marvin Mims Jr. that drew a 30-yard pass-interference flag and got the Broncos well into field-goal range. Nix then took a knee to center the ball for Wil Lutz's game-ending 23-yard field goal.

Payton said Nix will have surgery Tuesday in Birmingham, Alabama.

“He's such a strong, faith-based guy,” Payton said. “He's sitting in the hallway with his family and coming over and we're all talking to him. He knows that God's got a plan for him and he said he had (a broken ankle) in high school and then he said he had one at Auburn.

“And I said I didn't realize that. I said if I had known that I wouldn't have drafted you,” Payton cracked.

Nix said nothing about being hurt&nbsp;during a postgame interview&nbsp;with CBS, and he sounded like he was looking forward to the next game.

“It’s great to have home-field advantage in a situation like this. It’s exciting. This is why you play the game, this is why you compete. You get to playoff football, and good things happen,” Nix said.

The locker room had cleared out and reporters were waiting in an interview room for Nix when Payton returned and delivered the news.

Nix, the 12th overall pick out of Oregon in the 2024 NFL draft, tied Russell Wilson's NFL record with two dozen victories in his first two seasons. Saturday's victory was his first in the playoffs. The Broncos lost last year at Buffalo, but Nix led Denver to the AFC's top seed this season.

“He's a tough cookie,” Payton said. “And this team all year has lost key players and will rise up for the next challenge.”

STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) — Anthony Roy scored 23 points, Vyctorius Miller was fouled on a corner 3-point shot with 2.8 seconds left and hit all three free throws and Oklahoma State beat Kansas State 84-83 on Saturday night.

Parsa Fallah had 17 points, nine rebounds and two steals for Oklahoma State and Kanye Clary had 12 points and six assists. Andrija Vukovic added 11 points on 5-of-5 shooting and Miller finished with nine points, seven rebounds and four assists.

The Cowboys (14-4, 2-3 Big 12) are 24-0 under coach second-year coach Steve Lutz when they score at least 81 points. The 53-year-old Lutz earned his 100th career win in four-plus seasons.

Kansas State (9-9) is 0-5 in conference play for the first time since the 1996-97 season.

PJ Haggerty scored 14 of his 21 points in the second half for the Wildcats and Abdi Bashir Jr. added 15, which included 5 3s. Khamari McGriff scored 14 points on 7-of-7 shooting before he fouled out with 6:02 remaining. Nate Johnson also scored 14.

Haggerty made a running floater that gave Kansas State a two-point lead with 49 seconds to play. Kanye Clary missed back-to-back 3-point shots but Miller secured OSU's second consecutive offensive rebound on a tie-up with 4.0 seconds remaining. Miller then caught the inbounds pass in the corner and was fouled.

Clary and Miller each hit a 3 as Oklahoma State scored eight of the first 11 second-half points to push its lead into double figures with 17:22 left in the game.

DENVER (AP) — Bo Nix broke his right ankle late in overtime of the Denver Broncos’ divisional-round victory over Buffalo on Saturday and will have surgery that will sideline him for the rest of the playoffs. Coach Sean Payton delivered the stunning news about his second-year quarterback in the aftermath of Denver’s biggest win in a decade. Backup quarterback Jarrett Stidham will start the AFC championship game next weekend. Payton said Nix got hurt on a keeper where he lost 2 yards and was tackled by safety Cole Bishop. Nix was limping after the play, but there was no indication that he suffered such a serious injury.

DENVER (AP) — The Denver Broncos wrangled their biggest win in a decade from Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills but suffered an enormous loss in the process. About an hour after second-year quarterback Bo Nix led the Broncos to a 33-30 win on Wil Lutz’s 23-yard field goal in overtime, Denver coach Sean Payton returned to the postgame lectern to deliver the stunning news. He said Nix broke his right ankle a few plays before Lutz’s kick sent the top-seeded Broncos to the AFC championship game against either New England or Houston. Nix will have season-ending surgery Tuesday in Birmingham, Alabama.

SEATTLE (AP) — Rashid Shaheed returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown, Kenneth Walker III rushed for three scores and the Seattle Seahawks advanced to the NFC championship game with a dominant 41-6 victory over the San Francisco 49ers. Sam Darnold threw a touchdown pass and got his first career playoff win in his first season with the Seahawks, who will host either Chicago or the Los Angeles Rams next Sunday with a trip to the Super Bowl at stake. The Seahawks led 7-0 13 seconds into the game thanks to Shaheed, who fielded the opening kick and took it 95 yards to the end zone.

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Venus Williams became the oldest player ever in the Australian Open women's singles draw on Sunday and went ever-so-close to celebrating the record with a win. The 45-year-old, seven-time major winner was leading Olga Danilovic 4-0 in the third set. But Danilovic rallied to win six straight games in a 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-4 first-round win. Williams, ranked No. 576 and playing on a wild-card entry, entered the tournament on a five-match losing streak. Williams made her Australian Open debut in 1998 and was playing at the tournament for the 22nd time.

DENVER (AP) — Josh Allen stood at a microphone and wiped away tears after his latest heartbreaking playoff loss. This might have been the best chance for Allen and the Bills to get to the Super Bowl. He’s heard that, too, and after he committed four of Buffalo’s five turnovers in a 33-30 loss to Denver in the divisional round of the AFC playoffs, he had to answer questions about coming up short yet again. The Bills, who beat Jacksonville in the wild-card round, became the first NFL team to win a playoff game in six straight seasons without capturing a Super Bowl.

ATLANTA (AP) — Kevin Stefanski has been hired as coach of the Atlanta Falcons. He gets a second a second chance to lead an NFL team less than two weeks after he was fired by the Cleveland Browns. Stefanski spent six seasons with Cleveland, where he twice was named AP Coach of the Year and had a 45-56 record. He was fired on Jan. 5 after the Browns finished a 5-12 season. Atlanta announced his hiring on Saturday night. Stefanski replaces Raheem Morris, who was fired alongside general manager Terry Fontenot after an 8-9 campaign in his second season leading the franchise. He will report to newly appointed team president Matt Ryan.

The New York Giants have hired John Harbaugh as coach. Harbaugh joins the Giants 11 days after he was fired by the Baltimore Ravens. He is a Super Bowl champion who guided Baltimore to the playoffs in 12 of his 18 seasons there. He and the Ravens won it all a year after the Giants' most recent championship in the 2011 season. Harbaugh is now tasked with turning around a beleaguered franchise that has just two playoff appearances over the past decade. He gives New York a proven winner after seven coaches since Tom Coughlin failed to get past the divisional round.

A person familiar with the situation says Matt LaFleur has agreed to terms on a contract extension to remain the Green Bay Packers’ coach a week after their season ended with a wild-card playoff loss to the Chicago Bears. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity becasue the deal hasn’t been announced. ESPN and NFL Network first reported the deal. LaFleur had one year remaining on his contract once the Packers’ season ended. New Packers president/CEO Ed Policy had said last summer he'd prefer not to have a coach enter the final year of his contract without an extension.

MILAN (AP) — Fiorentina has paid tribute to owner Rocco Commisso with special shirts and a heartfelt goal celebration in a 2-1 win at Bologna in Serie A. Commisso, who purchased Fiorentina in 2019, died on Saturday. Fiorentina warmed up Sunday wearing shirts with Commisso’s photo and messages of thanks. A minute’s silence was observed before kickoff and players wore black armbands. Rolando Mandragora celebrated his opening goal by holding a special jersey with “Rocco” on it. Relegation-threatened Fiorentina has moved level on points with Lecce, which plays second-placed AC Milan later. Parma drew 0-0 against Genoa in a relegation battle.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Will Power has joined Andretti Global after a long career with Team Penske. Power, one of IndyCar's top drivers, was briefly sidelined by Penske's decision to replace him with David Malukas. Despite a potential contract extension, Power chose Andretti, eager to bring his experience to the team. Penske held him to his contract, delaying his start with Andretti until January. Power is now focused on proving himself and helping Andretti succeed. He already is working closely with the team, aiming to outperform Penske. Power's determination and experience are expected to boost Andretti's performance this season.

NEW YORK (AP) — The NFL will honor the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. by displaying “Choose Love” in the end zones and on helmet decals for all divisional round playoff games this weekend. “Choose Love” and “It Takes All of Us” will appear on opposite end zones at the Super Bowl next month. Teams will select the end zone stencils for the conference championship games. “Choose Love” was first introduced 2022 when the Bills adopted it as a unifying message for their community after a shooting in Buffalo. NFL teams have widely embraced the stencil, which was featured at the Super Bowl last year following an attack in New Orleans.

With Coco Gauff, Aryna Sabalenka, Iga Swiatek and Madison Keys divvying up the four Grand Slam titles last season, women’s tennis offers quite a bit more intrigue these days than the “Sincaraz” dominance in the men’s game. Seven of the past nine years ended with four different female champions at the major tournaments. Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, meanwhile, have combined to win the past eight Slam trophies. They’ve met in the last three major finals. Alcaraz and Sabalenka play first-round matches in Melbourne on Sunday.

LONDON (AP) — EuroLeague is the top men's basketball league outside the NBA. It’s not thrilled about the NBA’s plans to create a new competition on the continent. It’s not concerned, either. EuroLeague CEO Paulius Motiejunas says "We’ve been here for 26 years. We know how Europe functions.” The NBA in partnership with FIBA is eying the creation of a 16-team league with target start of October 2027. Some of those teams might come from the EuroLeague. Motiejunas tells The Associated Press that it is confident in keeping its teams like Real Madrid on board.

NEW YORK (AP) — Bo Bichette and the New York Mets have agreed to a $126 million, three-year contract, a person familiar with the negotiations tells The Associated Press. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the deal was subject to a successful physical and had not been announced. Bichette, a two-time All-Star at shortstop with the Toronto Blue Jays, will move to third base with the Mets, who have Francisco Lindor at shortstop. Bichette has never played a professional game at the hot corner. Bichette can opt out of the deal after the first or second season to become a free agent again. He would receive $47 million for one year and $89 million for two years, the person said.

A person familiar with the negotiations tells The Associated Press that catcher J.T. Realmuto has agreed to a $45 million, three-year contract to stay with the Philadelphia Phillies. Realmuto can earn an additional $5 million annually in bonuses. The move comes a month after designated hitter Kyle Schwarber also chose to remain with the Phillies. Realmuto, a three-time All-Star, hit .257 with 12 homers last year. He was in the final season of a $115.5 million, five-year contract. Philadelphia has also reached deals with right-hander Brad Keller and outfielder Adolis García this offseason.

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — The Australian Open's first formal opening ceremony turned into a Roger Federer celebration. On the eve of the season-opening major, Federer played an exhibition doubles match with Andre Agassi and Ash Barty against Pat Rafter and Lleyton Hewitt. The event featured a full house and a performance by Crowded House. Tennis great Rod Laver was also present. LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Freshman Darryn Peterson scored 26 points on 11-of-13 shooting, Flory Bidunga had 23 points, 11 rebounds and five blocks, and Kansas beat Baylor 80-62 on Friday night.

Kansas led by 15 points after opening the game on a 19-4 run, but the Bears rallied behind an 8-0 run to take their first lead at 37-36. The Jayhawks scored the final seven points of the half, capped by a stepback jumper by Peterson, who had 20 points on 8-of-10 shooting.

Bidunga threw down an alley-oop dunk while being fouled and he made the free throw to cap Kansas’ 15-3 run to begin the second half for a 58-40 lead. Baylor began the second half by making just 1 for 6 shots — after missing its final four field goals of the first half.

Kansas led by at least 14 points the rest of the way.

Peterson, averaging a team-high 21.8 points per game, has six games of 20 or more points for Kansas (13-5, 3-2 Big 12), which was coming off an 84-63 win against No. 2 Iowa State on Tuesday. The Jayhawks have shot above 50% from the field the past two games.

Cameron Carr led Baylor (11-6, 1-4) with 24 points and five 3-pointers. Tounde Yessoufou added three of Baylor's 11 3-pointers and 20 points.

It marked the first time since Dec. 10, 1966, that the two teams met while both were unranked in the AP poll.

KANSAS CITY —Jackson County Prosecutor Melesa Johnson announced charges against a Kansas City man for his involvement in a fatal shooting that took place at a gas station last year.

<a href="https://www.jacksoncountyprosecutor.com/DocumentCenter/View/2801/Ramel-Morgan-Complaint-Red">Ramel A. Morgan</a>,20,&nbsp;faces 2nd Degree Murder and Armed Criminal Action.

<a href="https://www.jacksoncountyprosecutor.com/DocumentCenter/View/2800/Morgan-PC-Red">According to court records</a>, Kansas City police responded to a shooting at a gas station on December 7, 2025, and canvassed the area, but could not locate a victim or suspect.&nbsp;

Detectives later learned the shooting victim from the gas station drove to a nearby hospital for treatment but died a short time later. The vehicle the victim arrived at the hospital in had multiple bullet strikes to the rear window frame, the rear windshield was shattered, and a bullet fragment was observed on the passenger-side spoiler. Officers recovered a handgun on the front passenger floorboard.&nbsp;

Surveillance footage from the gas station showed that a gray Hyundai Sonata arrived and parked at the gas pumps. Several individuals exited the vehicle and entered the store. A short time later, a silver Ford Mustang, the victim’s vehicle, drove through the parking lot.

While inside the store, the defendant was observed walking around holding a handgun. NEW YORK wit (AP) — What sounds like President Donald Trump narrating a new Fannie Mae ad actually is an AI-cloned voice reading text, according to a disclaimer in the video.

The voice in the ad, created with permission from the Trump administration, promises an “all new Fannie Mae” and calls the institution the “protector of the American Dream.” The ad comes as the administration is making a big push to show voters it is responding to their concerns about affordability, including in the housing market.

Trump plans to talk about housing at his appearance at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, where world leaders and corporate executives meet this week.

This isn’t the first time a member of the Trump family has used AI to replicate their voice, First Lady Melania Trump recently employed AI technology firm ElevenLabs to help voice the audio version of her memoir. It’s not known who cloned President Trump’s voice for the Fannie Mae ad. But ElevenLabs said in an email to The Associated Press on Sunday that the audio of Trump's voice wasn't generated by the company.

The White House did not respond to a request for comment.

Last month, Trump&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-address-economy-popularity-midterms-65d3b79a613cfb778432bcc719a313ab">pledged in a prime-time address</a>&nbsp;that he would roll out “some of the most aggressive housing reform plans in American history."

“For generations, home ownership meant security, independence, and stability,” Trump's digitized voice says in the one-minute ad aired Sunday. “But today, that dream feels out of reach for too many Americans not because they stopped working hard but because the system stopped working for them."

Fannie Mae and its counterpart Freddie Mac, which have been under government control since the Great Recession, buy mortgages that meet their risk criteria from banks, which helps provide liquidity for the housing market. The two firms guarantee roughly half of the $13 trillion U.S. home loan market and are a bedrock of the U.S. economy.

The ad says Fannie Mae will work with the banking industry to approve more would-be homebuyers for mortgages.

Trump, Bill Pulte, who leads the Federal Housing Finance Agency, and others have said they want to sell shares of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac on a major stock exchange but no concrete plans have been set.

Trump and Pulte have also floated&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/home-prices-50-year-mortgage-trump-56a931881ca6f6efeccf2de0333a83bd">extending the 30-year mortgage to 50 years</a>&nbsp;in order to lower monthly payments. Trump appeared to back off the proposal after critics said a longer-term loan would reduce people’s ability to create housing equity and increase their own wealth.

Trump also said on social media earlier this month that he was&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-housing-mortgage-rates-79294cf8eac1579b17430b4cd0708fcd">directing the federal government to buy $200 billion in mortgage bonds</a>, a move he said would help reduce mortgage rates at a time when Americans are anxious about home prices. Trump said Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac have $200 billion in cash that will be used to make the purchase.

Earlier this month, Trump also said he wants to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-housing-plan-investors-davos-6ec9f96c03d16c0714a6804c5f703db2">block large institutional investors f</a>&nbsp;rom buying houses, saying that a ban would make it easier for younger families to buy their first homes.

Trump's permission for the use of AI is interesting given that he has complained about aides in the Biden administration using autopen to apply the former president's signature to laws, pardons or executive orders. An autopen is a mechanical device that is used to replicate a person’s authentic signature.

However, a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/autopen-joe-biden-house-republicans-report-dfee07747d5b3e81417f6416c771d833">report</a>&nbsp;issued by House Republicans does not include any concrete evidence that autopen was used to sign Biden's name without his knowledge.

KANSAS CITY – German Alvarez-Rubio, 28, of Kansas City, Mo., was indicted by a federal grand jury for conspiracy and distribution of cocaine, methamphetamine, and psilocybin as well as firearms offenses.

Alvarez-Rubio made his first appearance in federal court after his arrest on January 12, 2026.

The indictment alleges that on July 22, 2025, the Alvarez-Rubio distributed cocaine.&nbsp; On July 29, 2025, Alvarez-Rubio distributed cocaine and methamphetamine and illegally sold ten firearms.&nbsp; On August 19, 2025, Alvarez-Rubio distributed methamphetamine, cocaine, and psilocybin (mushrooms) and illegally possessed a machinegun.

The charges contained in this indictment are simply accusations, and not evidence of guilt. Evidence supporting the charges must be presented to a federal trial jury, whose duty is to determine guilt or innocence.

This case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Heather Siegele. It was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI).

Indictment: KC drug dealer also illegally sold firearms

GEARY COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating a homicide in Junction City.

Just after 4p.m. on Saturday, police were dispatched to the 300 block of West 4th Street in Junction City for a subject reported to be suffering from possible gunshot wounds, according to a media release.

Upon arrival, officers located 66-year-old John Day of Junction City suffering from what was believed to be a gunshot wound. Day was transported to Stormont Vail Flint Hills Hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.

This incident remains an active investigation. The Junction City Police Department has identified and interviewed all individuals present during the incident. At this time, no arrests have been made.

There is no ongoing threat to the community related to this incident.

While some states are seeing more enrollees, there has been a drop nationwide.

Nationwide, the number of people buying health plans on Obamacare insurance marketplaces is down by about 833,000 compared with a year ago, according to federal data released this week.

Many states are reporting fewer new enrollees, more people dropping their coverage, and more people choosing cheaper and less generous health insurance plans with higher deductibles.

Across most states, Thursday was the last day to enroll for plans that start in February. But nine states and Washington, D.C., have deadlines later this month, so the numbers could change.

There are 21 states with state-run health insurance marketplaces, and the rest use the federal website. The vast majority of states have seen declines in enrollment&nbsp;so far, compared with around this time last year.

Preliminary data&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cms.gov/newsroom/fact-sheets/marketplace-2026-open-enrollment-period-report-national-snapshot-0#AnchorFour" target="_blank">released</a>&nbsp;Monday by the federal Centers for Medicare &amp; Medicaid Services shows 22.8 million enrollees, down from a record total of 24.3 million last year.

Premiums have surged as a result of the expiration of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kff.org/affordable-care-act/issue-brief/inflation-reduction-act-health-insurance-subsidies-what-is-their-impact-and-what-would-happen-if-they-expire/#:~:text=The%20Inflation%20Reduction%20Act%20(IRA,three%20years%2C%20ending%20after%202025." target="_blank">enhanced federal subsidies</a>&nbsp;first made available by the American Rescue Plan Act in 2021 and later extended through the end of 2025 by the Inflation Reduction Act. The availability of the subsidies spurred a sharp increase in the number of people buying health plans on the marketplaces. In 2020, 11.4 million people were enrolled in marketplaces through Obamacare, formally known as the Affordable Care Act. More than double that amount enrolled last year.

Congress failed to reach an agreement on extending the subsidies before the end of last year and still hasn’t reached one. As a result, premiums were expected to increase this year by 114% on average — from $888 last year to about $1,904, according to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kff.org/affordable-care-act/aca-marketplace-premium-payments-would-more-than-double-on-average-next-year-if-enhanced-premium-tax-credits-expire/" target="_blank">estimates</a>&nbsp;made in September by health policy research organization KFF.

The higher costs appear to be driving many people to forgo insurance or opt for cheaper, less generous plans this year, health officials and analysts say. Several states with state-based marketplaces — including Georgia, Illinois, Minnesota, New York, Vermont, Virginia and Washington — are reporting fewer enrollments this year in comparison with enrollments through early January 2025, according to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kff.org/affordable-care-act/state-indicator/marketplace-enrollment-snapshot-for-open-enrollment-2026/?currentTimeframe=0&amp;sortModel=%7B%22colId%22:%22Location%22,%22sort%22:%22asc%22%7D" target="_blank">early data</a>. Other states, such as California, are reporting fewer new enrollees.

“It’s important to consider that this is preliminary data, so this represents people who have signed up and selected the plan — but they probably haven’t received their first premium bill,” said Elizabeth Lukanen, executive director of the health policy research organization State Health Access Data Assistance Center at the University of Minnesota. “Once that happens, I think there’s concern — and it seems very possible — that people may decide to drop coverage. So, the decline could get bigger.

“On the other hand, open enrollment hasn’t closed, so you have two things sort of competing. It seems pretty likely that there will be a decline,” she said.

If the downward trend continues, the nation could see the first decline in enrollment since 2020, Lukanen said, adding that a full picture of income levels and demographics of people who have dropped coverage&nbsp;won’t be clear&nbsp;until the summer.

In Pennsylvania, data updated through Tuesday shows more than 15,000 previously enrolled adults between the ages of 55 and 64 have dropped coverage entirely — the most of any age bracket.

Pennsylvania’s state-based exchange, Pennie, has seen about 15% fewer new enrollments compared with last year. The state is also reporting 1,000 residents dropping coverage per day during open enrollment — with the most coverage losses among people with incomes 150% to 200% of the poverty level. These could include families of two adults and two children with an income between $48,225 and $64,300.

The state is seeing an “unprecedented” number of previously enrolled people dropping coverage, said Devon Trolley, executive director of the Pennsylvania Health Insurance Exchange Authority.
