Carnival returning to Hoisington Labor Day Celebration for 2026 

Barton Dance Theatre will host a second Fairytale Kids Camp fundraising event this spring, where children aged three to eleven who love fairy tales can enjoy a camp full of creative expression led by Barton Dance Theatre students from 2-5 p.m. Feb. 7 in the Fine Arts Building.

Tickets are $20 per child and $10 per additional sibling (up to 3) and are available at&nbsp;<a href="https://shows.bartonccc.edu/" target="_blank">shows.bartonccc.edu</a>.

The camp includes classes taught by Barton Dance students in dance, visual art, tumbling, and acting. There will also be a snack and movie time at the end. The camp is a fundraiser for Barton Dance Theatre's tour to New York City in April.

Fine and Performing Arts Coordinator and Dance Instructor Danika Bielek said she designed the fundraiser as a way for kids to enjoy being active while also connecting her dancers with the community in a positive way.

“We hosted a Fairytale Camp last November and had such a great response, we sold out,” she said. “Offering this second camp gives families who couldn’t make it to the first one a chance for their children to come get creative with our dance students.

Bielek said that kids who attended the camp in November can still enjoy this one, too.

“The theme of fairytales is so popular, so there are many stories to draw inspiration from for our activities,” she said. We will have different things for our attendees to do, but just as much fun. Our dance students absolutely loved working with the children last fall, and they can’t wait to get creative with them again.”

'Fairytale Creative Camp for Kids' fundraiser back by popular demand

K-State Extension is pleased to announce the continued offering of Becoming a Mom®/Comenzando bien®, a comprehensive prenatal education program serving families in both Ellis County and Barton County. In Ellis County classes begin February 19, 2026. Classes in Barton County will begin April 1. These sessions are available free of charge to all area families.

The program is made possible through strong regional partnerships with the Kansas Department of Health and Environment Bureau of Family Health and March of Dimes In Ellis County toher partners include First Care Clinic, High Plains Mental Health, Early Childhood Connections, Hays Public Library, Feeding Hays, KidLink DSNWK, Jana’s Campaign, Prospectively Healthy, Ellis County Emergency Medical Services. Together, these partners are committed to supporting expectant parents and improving maternal and infant health outcomes across both counties.

Using the evidence-based March of Dimes Becoming a Mom®/Comenzando bien® curriculum, participants and their chosen support person(s) will receive education on physical and emotional health during pregnancy, labor and delivery, infant feeding, infant care, safe sleep, and other timely parenting topics. Each session also connects families with local resources and service providers who support expectant parents and families with young children, helping participants build relationships and awareness of available supports within their own communities.

“I’m incredibly excited about the dedicated instructors and community partners who have come together to bring Becoming a Mom to families in both Ellis and Barton counties,” said Monique Koerner with the Cottonwood Extension District. “Our goal is to create a welcoming space where parents can connect, learn from one another, and feel supported—not only during pregnancy, but well beyond.”

Discussions within the Ellis County Breastfeeding Coalition also helped shape the program’s focus on mentorship and relationship-building, while involvement from partners across both counties ensures families are personally introduced to the professionals and organizations available to support them. This collaborative approach is designed to make it easier for families to seek help when they need it most.

Becoming a Mom® has a strong track record of success across Kansas. Since 2010, program evaluations conducted through the Kansas Perinatal Community Collaborative model have shown significant improvements in pregnancy and birth outcomes, including reduced rates of preterm birth and low birth weight, higher breastfeeding initiation rates, and lower cesarean rates.

All pregnant women in Ellis and Barton counties are encouraged to attend, regardless of previous pregnancy or parenting experience. Mothers, fathers, and support people are welcome at each class. Participants may choose which sessions to attend, with larger incentives—examples may include a portable crib or infant playmat—available for those who attend at least four of the six classes. Incentives are provided through grants made available by KDHE.

In Ellis County, limited childcare will be available, and a free meal will be provided by Feeding Hays. In the quiet and serene western Kansas town of Bazine, life inside one household was ironically defined for years by anxious unpredictability. Nine‑year‑old Alex, diagnosed with autism, has long struggled with behaviors that have overwhelmed classrooms, teachers, and even entire school systems. His mother, Mahria, remembers the phone calls, the shortened school days, the tears — hers and even some of the educators – trying to figure out how to help her son.

Even after transferring to a second school district, the challenges continued to escalate. Staff tried half‑days, adjusted schedules, and maintained constant communication. But Alex continued to elope from classrooms, and rooms were often left in disarray from his behavioral outbursts. One administrator broke down crying on the phone to Mahria, telling her, “He’s running away and I don’t know how to help him.”

Eventually, at the urging of Alex’s therapist, Mahria made the difficult decision to homeschool. For the past three years, she has balanced full‑time parenting, teaching, and her job as a remote dispatcher for a private law enforcement company. Her days are a rotation of school drop‑offs, lessons in reading, math and art, naps squeezed in between shifts, and late‑night work.

“It’s a lot,” she said simply. “But thankfully I can work from home.”

The Road to Aqua The turning point began 2 1/2 years ago, with a search for a service dog to help Alex.

The process was daunting: long waitlists, high fees, and countless organizations to sift through. A stroke of luck came in the form of a neighbor connected to FASDogs, an organization dedicated to providing quality service dogs to assist families dealing with issues related to Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders and other related diagnoses like autism. The neighbor put her in touch with Krista LaRocque, service dog trainer for FASDogs, who also lives in the community.

Alex was screened for his preferences, and Mahria began fundraising to cover the costs — more than $8,000 for a training dog, plus deposits, application fees, travel to Topeka, and the week‑long training required for families. Add in crates, vests, leashes, and harnesses, and the total climbed even higher.

“It was a struggle to get where we are,” said Mahria, “but definitely worth it.”

Alex and Aqua After seeing Alex interact with other service dogs and an initial attempt to match a puppy with Alex, LaRocque brought a 3-year-old Golden Pyrenees named Aqua to Alex’s therapy session. The bond between boy and dog was immediate.

“They were instant buddies,” Mahria said. “Even the service dog people were surprised because they don’t usually see them sync up that quickly.”

During previous visits, other dogs didn’t connect with Alex at all. But with Aqua, he stayed for an hour and a half on the first visit. Alex and Mahria returned several more times to make sure it wasn’t a fluke. It wasn’t.

From that first meeting to Aqua’s trial placement in the home, nearly a year passed. Training was extensive: pressure therapy, co‑handling sessions, and specialized work with multiple trainers. Aqua officially graduated training in early August last year, but he had already been living with the family since May.

A Calmer Home — and a Calmer Child The changes were noticeable almost immediately.

“His therapist has seen it too,” Mahria said about Alex’s progress. “He’s able to regulate quicker. Instead of a room getting destroyed, it’s maybe one or two things that he throws.”

Aqua’s presence has softened the intensity of Alex’s reactions, especially when stimulants trigger sensory overload. What used to be a 70 percent chance of a meltdown is slowly shifting so that the episodes become fewer and with less intensity.

Those who try sternness with Alex only escalate the situation, Mahria explained. Calm works better. She said that Aqua embodies that calm.

Still, the work continues. Aqua must be trained daily, rewarded intentionally, and not treated as a family pet, but as a working partner.

“We have to keep training him at home,” she said. “He has to earn things. We can’t give treats all the time. And we can take him through a refresher course, if needed.”

A Community Effort The journey that eventually led to Aqua wasn’t one the family made alone. More than $8,000 was needed to bring a trained service dog to Alex. Funding came together after Mahria’s tax refund along with a combination of other funding sources. Mahria credits her daughter Nadia’s school, the local 4H Club, and neighbors for stepping up when the family needed financial help to cover the cost. Rosewood Services and its Roots &amp; Wings Foundation also helped in a major way with funding and support, she said.

“I can’t say it enough — thank you, thank you, thank you so much to everyone for helping us make this possible,” said Mahria.

A New Chapter Today, Aqua has been fully certified and working with Alex for nearly six months, though he’s been part of the household since last spring.

“I’ve seen improvement, definitely since Aqua has been in our house,” Mahria said with relief in her voice. “It was a long process, but it was worth every bit of it.”

The bond between her boy and his service dog is offering stability, hope, and the promise of calmer days ahead.

The people of Great Bend have asked questions. Jason Kuilan
wants to provide some answers. The director of Great Bend Economic Development
again provided updates to the Great Bend City Council during Monday’s meeting. He
announced a pair of upcoming question-and-answer sessions to further educate
area business owners and the public about Eco Devo’s mission.

“I just want to announce and reiterate that we’re holding a
public forum on Wednesday from 5-7 p.m. this week, open to Chamber members only,”
he said. “Next week, on Feb. 11, we’re going to be hosting the same forum from 5-7
p.m. at Dry Lake (Brewing). Again, it’s just to answer any questions anybody
has on the Innovation Center and explain what it is, as well as provide more
information on Economic Development, the multiple subcommittees we have, the
multiple programs we have.”

Previous Eco Devo leadership had pledged to give city
council members financial reports each quarter. After a lapse, Kuilan was able
to send out reports last Friday. As for the Innovation Center on 10th Street, Kuilan said work
continues to finalize winterization of the building, but good news may be on
the horizon.

“We’re having conversations with a lot of businesses and
individuals here locally to help close that funding gap,” Kuilan said. “Those conversations
have been going pretty well. I’m hoping in the next week or two, I’ll have some
pretty big announcements on the funding of the Innovation Center moving forward,
which will be a really big deal for us, and I think that will also open the doors
for funding to finish the Innovation Center itself.”

The Great Bend High School forensics and debate team opened its season with an outstanding weekend on Saturday, Jan. 31, earning top finishes, a sweepstakes championship, and multiple state qualifications.

On Friday, seven Panthers competed at the first Congressional Debate tournament of the season in Newton. Junior Parker Coleman captured first place in the Varsity House, while senior Zach Hart earned a fifth-place finish.

The team continued its success Saturday in Garden City at the first forensics tournament of the year, where Great Bend claimed the first-place sweepstakes trophy. Fifteen of the Panther’s 23 entries advanced to finals, with particularly strong performances across the public speaking events.

Original Oratory saw multiple Panthers on the awards stage, with junior Kendra Scheideman earning first place, Coleman finishing second, junior Kyra Lewis placing third, and freshman Ethan Harrington taking fourth.

In Informative Speaking, Coleman earned first place, followed by Hart in third and junior Hunter McClanahan in fifth. Coleman also claimed first place in Extemporaneous Speaking, while McClanahan finished fifth in Extemp.

Scheideman added another top finish by earning first place in Program of Oral Interpretation. In Impromptu Speaking, Hart placed second, Scheideman finished third, sophomore Samantha Negaard earned fourth, and junior Kaitlyn Froetschner placed fifth. Negaard also earned third place in Dramatic Interpretation.

In addition to the medalists, first-year competitors Jaaziel Hernandez and Addie Hart contributed valuable sweepstakes points, helping secure the team’s overall victory.

All first- and second-place finishes qualified for the Kansas State Speech and Drama Championships, giving the Panthers six state qualifications after just the opening weekend of competition.

“This weekend exemplifies why I am so proud of each of these students,” head coach Kim Heath said. “They competed with confidence, supported one another, and represented Great Bend with pride.”

Assistant coach Pamela Williams highlighted the team’s depth and growth. “Our success came from contributions across multiple events and grade levels,” Williams said. “It was exciting to see both experienced competitors and newcomers make an impact.”

The Panthers will continue their season this week with a Congressional Debate tournament in Sedgwick on Friday, followed by a forensics tournament in Sterling on Saturday.

Panther Forensics brings home first place from Garden City

Near-month, light sweet NYMEX crude dropped 21 cents on Friday to close the day at $65.21 per barrel, a weekly gain of more than four dollars and only the second daily settlement over $65 since October. Prices on Monday were four percent lower in New York and London. NYMEX crude was trading a few cents over $62 a barrel. Brent crude in London was just over $66.Kansas Common crude starts the week and the month of February at $55.50 per barrel after dropping a quarter per barrel Friday. The monthly average price at CHS in McPherson rises above $50 for only the second time since October, at $50.28 per barrel for the month of January.

Kansas regulators report 42 new intent-to-drill notices in January, compared to 65 in January of last year, and 74 in January of the year before that. The Kansas Corporation Commission Web site lists one new intent-to-drill notice in Rooks County, one in Finney County and one in Gove County. Kansas regulators approved just one permit in Western Kansas this week, in Lane County. There are 21 new drilling permits in eastern Kansas, including eighteen from the same producer and contractor in Bourbon County. That's 40 permits statewide so far this year.

Operators completed nine wells across the state this week, with four in Western Kansas, including one in Rooks County and one in Gove County.Independent Oil and Gas Service notes 65 new completion reports statewide year-to-date. Just 31 wells have been drilled from spud to full depth so far this year, down from 71 a year ago.

The Kansas Rig Count from Independent Oil and Gas Service is down one in eastern Kansas at seven rigs, and unchanged west of Wichita at six. The total is down 13 percent from a month ago, and down 17 percent from a year ago. On Friday drilling was underway on one lease in Gove County, and one in Rooks County, and about to begin on a second lease in Rooks County.

The Rotary Rig Count from Baker Hughes is 546 drilling rigs, unchanged at 411 oil rigs, but up three gas rigs for the week. The total is down 36 rigs from the report at the end of January last year. The rig count in Texas drops to 220 rigs, down three from last week and down 51 rigs from a year ago.&nbsp; Baker Hughes reports Oklahoma was up three rigs.

The US has now raised $1.3 BILLION dollars buying and selling strategic crude-oil stockpiles. Inventories, and profits, rise at the Strategic Petroleum Reserves in Louisiana, up half a million barrels to 415 million this week. That's nearly 50 Million refill barrels, sold for $95 per barrel, and then refilled for about $68. By selling high and buying low, the US Treasury has saved $1.3 BILLION at the SPR since April of 2024.

Commercial crude oil stockpiles dropped by more than two million barrels to just under 424 Million as of Jan. 23. The Energy Information Administration says stockpiles are about three percent below the five-year average for this time of year.

The government reports domestics crude production is down 36,000 barrels a day from a week ago to just under 13.7 million barrels a day. That's the lowest weekly average since last November. The Energy Information Administration says the four-week average drops below 13.8 million barrels per day.

EIA reported increasing stockpiles of both regular gasoline and diesel, and demand for each lagging behind last year at this time. Fuel stockpiles are five percent above the five-year average for this time of year.US crude-oil imports dropped more than 800-thousand barrels a day to 5.6 million. The four week average is just under 6.4 million barrels a day. That's down 57-thousand daily barrels, or about one percent from a year ago.Crude oil exports jumped more than 24 percent, leaping 900-thousand barrels a day to nearly 4.6 million. The four-week average is up nearly half a million to just over 4.2 million barrels a day. Exports reached a four-month high, topping 4.5 million barrels a day for only the fourth time in the last year.

The amount of sanctioned crude oil believed to be at sea, and in fact adrift, is now well over one BILLION barrels. Now that India is stepping back from Russian crude-oil deliveries, an increasing amount Russian crude oil remains adrift, adding to a growing global problem stemming from sanctions against several countries. According to Bloomberg, Russia shipped more than three million barrels a day in the last four weeks, but India is now refusing delivery. That's adding to the more than one billion barrels of sanctioned crude oil already at sea without destination.

Speaking of at-sea-without-destination, two shadow-fleet tankers were literally adrift following similar mechanical breakdowns in the Mediterranean Sea. Media in Europe report two fully-laden crude tankers appear to be floating at very slow speeds without clear guidance or destination. One of them is located north of Algeria and the other near Gibraltar.

The oil majors operating a huge oil field in Kazakhstan lost an international arbitration case, leaving them liable for billions in compensation to that country’s government. Bloomberg reports a preliminary judgment of four billion dollars, calling it a partial victory for Kazakhstan, which was claiming more than $6 billion. The government said, and the tribunal agreed, that the firms collected for unapproved or unrecoverable cost overruns.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Make a Difference Contest

The New York Giants are hiring Matt Nagy to be their offensive coordinator, according to a person with knowledge of the decision.

The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Tuesday because the move had not been announced.

Nagy spent the past three seasons in that role with Kansas City, including helping the Chiefs win the Super Bowl in the 2023 season and reach the title game in 2024. Nagy coached Chicago from 2018-21 after several years moving up the ranks working under Andy Reid in Kansas City and Philadelphia.

He is the second major addition for new Giants coach John Harbaugh’s staff after Dennard Wilson was hired to be defensive coordinator. Todd Monken was the favorite to run the offense before he got his first NFL head coaching job when the Cleveland Browns hired him.

The Chiefs ranked 20th in the league in offense last season, missing the playoffs in the process. Eric Bieniemy, who held the job before Nagy, is returning to the team.

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — Darryn Peterson was happy to finally finish a game for No. 11 Kansas, and the Jayhawks certainly needed the standout freshman at the end against No. 13 Texas Tech.

“This is the first game I got through to the end,” Peterson said. “I've been trying to all year, so to finally be able to do it, it's a blessing.”

Peterson scored 19 points while playing a season-high 35 minutes, but his only two field goals in the second half were late 3-pointers. He made the tying basket on a contested shot from the right corner with 1:20 left, and hit again from the left wing with 44 seconds left in a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kansas-jayhawks-kansas-state-wildcats-889e3e1ba37face7617a12245f9afa94">64-61 victory</a>&nbsp;Monday night.

Two days earlier, Peterson scored 18 points in the first half but didn't play the final 16:46 of a win over then-No. 13 BYU because of cramping. He is averaging 21.1 points per game.

An expected top pick in the NBA draft in June, Peterson had&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kansas-jayhawks-kansas-state-wildcats-889e3e1ba37face7617a12245f9afa94">missed a win over Kansas State</a>&nbsp;the previous game because of an ankle injury. The 6-foot-5 guard has also dealt with hamstring and calf issues this season while missing 10 games overall for Kansas (17-5, 7-2 Big 12).

Before&nbsp;<a href="https://www.espn.com/video/clip/_/id/47812796">hitting the late 3s</a>, Peterson was only 3-of-12 shooting against the Red Raiders (16-6, 6-3).

“He’s got something that I guess you’re born with and can’t teach. He’s got just an unbelievable ability to raise his level when it counts the most,” Jayhawks coach Bill Self said. “That’s what he did tonight. I mean, those two plays he made were obviously the two biggest plays of the game for us.”

The tying shot, after a Tech turnover, was made over preseason AP All-America forward JT Toppin, who then had his shot blocked at the other end by Flory Bidunga before missing on a second chance. Peterson then made what proved to be the game-winner.

“Two crucial 3s ... that was crazy,” Bidunga said.

“Coach Self told me to go make a play,” said Peterson, who was then asked where his confidence came from to finish that way. “The work I put in and then my teammates and coaches. I had a bad game ... shots weren’t really going. They guarded me kind of well, but I just trusted the work, so those shots I feel like I should make."

And he did when they counted most for the Jayhawks in their sixth consecutive victory.

The Royals announced Monday that their games will be produced and distributed by Major League Baseball on&nbsp;Royals.TV&nbsp;for the 2026 season. It was a move that was&nbsp;hinted at by president of business operations Cullen Maxey&nbsp;this past weekend at Royals Rally after the club terminated its contract with Main Street Sports Group, the parent company of FanDuel Sports Kansas City, last month.

The Royals were hopeful that Main Street/FanDuel would find a merger partner to help with their financial pressures, but by Monday, Kansas City had decided to move platforms and partner with MLB for its broadcasts. The club had worked for close to two months on having MLB as a backup in case it had to pivot.

Now, Kansas City games will be available on cable and satellite, as well as the MLB app. The MLB app is available to stream on a&nbsp;variety of devices. The Royals are one of a growing group of teams to have an MLB-distributed broadcast.

Fans who live inside the Royals' home television territory can purchase a Royals.TV in-market streaming package through MLB.com or the MLB app for $19.99 per month or $99.99 per year.&nbsp;Subscriptions&nbsp;for the 2026 season will be available later this month, before Spring Training games begin on Feb. 20.

“We thank FanDuel and their parent company, Main Street Sports, for everything they’ve done,” Maxey said Monday. “They’ve been a partner for a while, most recently as they have come out of bankruptcy, and they helped us expand our reach across our TV territory into Nebraska and Iowa, obviously Missouri and Kansas [and] Arkansas, as well as launch a direct-to-consumer effort that went really well. We do thank them for their partnership, wish them well in the future, but we are excited about moving over to Major League Baseball. They have built a team to support local teams and their network efforts. They’ve got all the relationships we need.”

The in-market streaming package will not have any blackout restrictions for Royals games. However, it’s important to note that Royals.TV subscribers who travel outside the Royals' home territory are still subject to other teams’ blackout restrictions. For example, if a Royals.TV subscriber travels to New York, a Royals vs. Mets game would be blacked out. It wouldn’t be blacked out if that subscriber was located in Kansas City home territory. The only games not available on Royals.TV for in-market subscribers will be national exclusives.

Royals.TV&nbsp;will also be available through cable and satellite distributors like FanDuel Sports Kansas City was in previous years. Specific cable and satellite distributors and exact channel locations will be announced closer to the start of the regular season. The team said it expects channel locations to be located near other sports programming on channel guides, and Maxey expects Spectrum and DirecTV to be partners again in distributing games. Other distributors have yet to be determined.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Royals also again expect select games this season to be broadcast as an over-the-air option, the second consecutive year that a handful of games will air on KCTV (Channel 5). Last year, 10 games were broadcast over the air. One of these games in 2026 will be Opening Day on March 27 against the Braves.

MLB to produce and distribute local games for Royals in 2026

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — Maybe the game itself will live up to the hype, because Super Bowl Opening Night was calmer than usual. Drake Maye and the New England Patriots take on Sam Darnold and the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday at Levi’s Stadium, home of the San Francisco 49ers. The media frenzy that kicks off the week’s festivities on Monday night was smaller, quieter and far less outrageous than it has been in recent years. The crowd inside the San Jose Convention Center didn’t compare to the thousands of fans who've attended when it’s been held in larger arenas.

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — The NFL released a statement Monday on New York Giants co-owner Steve Tisch, whose name showed up more than 400 times in files released by the U.S. Justice Department regarding Jeffrey Epstein. The statement said the NFL is aware of the reports and will look into the matter "to understand the facts.” The statement came before Commissioner Roger Goodell was scheduled to hold his annual state of the league address to kick off Super Bowl week.

NEW YORK (AP) — Speedskater Erin Jackson and bobsledder Frank Del Duca have been chosen as the U.S. flagbearers for the Milan Cortina Olympics opening ceremony on Friday.Jackson is the first Black woman to win an individual gold medal at a Winter Olympics. Del Duca, a sergeant in the Army, is the first bobsledder in 70 years to carry the flag.The U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee announced the names on Tuesday.Del Duca, with deep Italian roots, finds the opportunity especially meaningful as the games are in Italy. SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said there have been no discussions with the union about adding an 18th game to the season and said lengthening the season again was not inevitable. The NFL added a 17th game in 2021 and Goodell has expressed interest in the past about adding an 18th game in place of one of the three exhibition games each team plays every season. Goodell said a number of issues would have to be discussed with the union before an 18th game was added, including whether a second bye week was needed and the size of rosters.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The Super Bowl often highlights star players, but lesser-known athletes can make a big impact. Milton Williams helped the Eagles win last year, leading to a contract with New England. Kansas City relied on unsung heroes in previous victories. This Sunday, New England's Mack Hollins and Seattle's Drake Thomas could shine. Hollins has been a reliable receiver, while Thomas is a key defensive player. New England's Craig Woodson and Seattle's Michael Dickson also have potential to influence the game. New England's Khyiris Tonga and Seattle's George Holani might play crucial roles as well.

The NBA season is heating up with the trade deadline on Thursday and the All-Star Game on February 15. No playoff spots are locked, but teams like Oklahoma City, Detroit, San Antonio, Denver, New York, and Boston seem secure. Meanwhile, Utah, Brooklyn, and others face challenges. Historically, teams with certain characteristics at the 50-game mark often win championships. They must be over .500, have over 30 wins, outscore opponents by five points per game, and have a strong rebound differential. And all respect to OKC, those rules narrow the contenders to Detroit, New York, Houston, and San Antonio. History suggests these teams have a realistic shot.

ATLANTA (AP) — Tuskegee men's basketball coach Benjy Taylor was handcuffed after intervening in an incident involving his team and members of Morehouse's basketball and football teams over the weekend. A statement from his attorney says Taylor was concerned about Morehouse football players acting aggressively toward Tuskegee players and their parents during postgame handshakes Saturday. The statement says the football players' presence during the postgame handshake is prohibited by conference-mandated security protocols. After Taylor asked a second officer to enforce those protocols, the officer handcuffed him and escorted him from the court. On Monday, the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference fined Morehouse for failing to meet mandated conference safety standards.

Arizona remains the unanimous No. 1 in the AP Top 25 men's college basketball poll. Michigan jumped to second place after wins over Nebraska and Michigan State. The Wildcats, off to a school-record 22-0 start, earned all 59 votes to stay atop the poll for the eighth week. UConn, Duke and Illinois round out the top five. Kansas climbs three spots to No. 11 after a win over BYU and ahead of a big showdown with Texas Tech. Tennessee returns to the poll at No. 25, replacing Alabama, which had a 42-week poll streak snapped. The Big 12 leads with six teams in the Top 25. Arizona and No. 23 Miami (Ohio) are the only unbeaten teams left in Division I.

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — Kansas freshman Darryn Peterson scored 19 points, including two 3-pointers in the final 1:20 for his only field goals of the second half, and the 11th-ranked Jayhawks overcame a late nine-point deficit to beat No. 13 Texas Tech 64-61 on Monday night.

Peterson, who played a season-high 35 minutes, hit a 3 from the right corner with 1:20 left to tie the game at 61. His next one, with 44 seconds remaining, put the Jayhawks (17-5, 7-2 Big 12) ahead to stay in their sixth consecutive win.

The Red Raiders (16-6, 6-3), playing without starting point guard Christian Anderson, had a 59-50 lead with 6:05 to go after a jumper by LeJuan Watts. But they made only one of their last 12 shots while Kansas closed on a 14-2 run.

Melvin Council Jr. had 16 points, Flory Bidunga scored 14 and Bryson Tiller grabbed 10 rebounds for Kansas.

Watts had 19 points and 12 rebounds to lead Texas Tech, which beat Kansas in each of the previous two seasons under coach Grant McCasland after never before winning consecutive games in the 53-game series. The Red Raiders had been 11-0 at home this season.

Donovan Atwell had 12 points on four 3s for Texas Tech, including bookend 3s during an 11-0 run early in the second half for a six-point lead.

Anderson, who averages 19.6 points per game and leads the Big 12 with 7.5 assists, missed the game because of illness. He was in uniform and was riding a stationary bicycle early in the second half, but never played.

Texas Tech visits West Virginia on Sunday.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — NASA's long-awaited moonshot with astronauts is off until at least March because of&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/nasa-moon-artemis-astronauts-space-479f13e074b3df8b9453230cb248c5bf">hydrogen fuel leaks</a>&nbsp;that marred the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/nasa-artemis-astronauts-moon-540260c90a45e0de4cb28f3e481777ff">dress rehearsal</a>&nbsp;of its&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/artemis-nasa-moonshot-921fc1a0a832217fae8b57d2fce2dc66">giant new rocket</a>.

It's the same problem that delayed the Space Launch System rocket's debut three years ago. That first test flight was grounded for months because of leaking hydrogen, which is highly flammable and dangerous.

“Actually, this one caught us off guard,” NASA's John Honeycutt said Tuesday, hours after the test came to an abrupt halt at Kennedy Space Center.

Until the exasperating fuel leaks, the space agency had been targeting as soon as this weekend for humanity's first trip to the moon in more than half a century.

“When you’re dealing with hydrogen, it’s a small molecule. It’s highly energetic and we like it for that reason and we do the best we can," Honeycutt explained.

Officials said the month-long delay will allow the launch team to conduct another fueling test before committing the four astronauts — three U.S. and one Canadian — to a lunar fly-around. It's too soon to know when the countdown dress rehearsal might be repeated.

Any repairs to deformed or damaged seals, or other components, can likely be completed at the pad, managers said. A return to the Vehicle Assembly Building would likely result in an even longer delay.

The leaks cropped up early in Monday's loading operation and again hours later, ultimately halting the countdown clocks at the five-minute mark. Launch controllers had wanted to get all the way down to a half-minute in the countdown, but the escaping hydrogen exceeded safety limits.

NASA repeatedly interrupted the flow of liquid hydrogren, which was minus 423 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 253 degrees Celsius), in an attempt to warm up the area between the rocket and fuel lines and, hopefully, reseat any loose seals. But that didn't work and neither did altering the flow of the hydrogen — adjustments that allowed the first SLS rocket to finally soar without a crew in 2022.

With their launch now off until at least March 6, commander Reid Wiseman and his crew were given the all-clear to emerge from quarantine in Houston. They will reenter it two weeks before the next launch attempt.

Wiseman said on the social platform X that he was proud of how the dress rehearsal went, “especially knowing how challenging the scenario was for our launch team doing the dangerous and unforgiving work.”

The extreme cold at the launch site did not contribute to the fuel leaks or any other problem, according to officials. Heaters kept the Orion capsule warm atop the 322-foot (98-meter) rocket, while constant purging protected the rocket and ground systems.

Amit Kshatriya, NASA's associate administrator, stressed that the Space Launch System is “an experimental vehicle," with more lessons to be learned. Years between fueling tests and flights don't help, he added.

“I'm just reminded again almost four days and 40 years from Challenger, nobody sitting in one of these chairs needs to be calling any of these vehicles operational,” Kshatriya said at a news conference.

NASA has only a handful of days any given month to send them around the moon — the first time astronauts will have flown there since 1972. They won't land on the moon or even go into lunar orbit during the nearly 10-day mission, but rather check out life support and other vital capsule systems ahead of a moon landing by other astronauts in a few years.

NASA sent 24 astronauts to the moon during the 1960s and 1970s Apollo. The new Artemis program is aiming for new territory — the moon's south polar region — and looking to keep crews on the lunar surface for much longer periods.

Why NASA has again postponed long-awaited moonshot 

SUMNER COUNTY —Woods Park and Donut Bay,&nbsp;1500 W Harvey Avenue, in the city of Wellington will be temporarily closed as City staff work to address a potential outbreak of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI), commonly known as bird flu, according to a media release from the city.

Staff are coordinating closely with the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks Research and Survey Office.

HPAI is a severe and often fatal viral disease that spreads rapidly among bird populations. Residents are urged not to approach, handle, or attempt to assist any birds that appear ill. Birds exhibiting HPAI may show one or more of the following symptoms:

● Neurological impairment, including lack of coordination, disorientation, inability to hold the head up, hunched posture, tremors, seizures, or twisted neck

● Difficulty breathing, such as open‑mouth breathing or wheezing

● Nasal discharge, coughing, or sneezing, sometimes with blood‑tinged fluid

While the risk of avian influenza to the general public is considered very low, humans and pets can be vulnerable, especially those with weakened immune systems. Based on guidance from KDWP, the City advises the followingmprecautions:

● Avoid touching or approaching wildlife. Observe from a safe distance. If contact occurs, avoid touching your face and wash hands thoroughly with soap and water before eating, drinking, or smoking.

● Do not touch diseased or dead wildlife. Sick birds should not be taken to rehabilitators or zoos, as doing so increases the risk of spreading the disease to vulnerable captive birds. Do not transport sick wildlife in vehicles, into homes, or into public spaces.

● Keep pets away from birds that appear sick. Do not allow them to lick or eat sick or dead waterfowl.

● Do not handle or consume sick game birds.
