The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has placed Fossil Lake in Russell County under a harmful algae bloom warning. Exposure through contact or ingestion can cause illness in animals and humans. Boating on Fossil Lake is prohibited until further notice.

According to KDHE, a harmful algae bloom means: Water is unsafe for humans or animals. Avoid all contact with water. Do not let pets eat dried algae or drink contaminated water. If fish are caught, clean well with potable water and eat the fillet portion only.
