Serving as the Great Bend Fire Chief for more than five years, and a
member of the fire department for nearly three decades, Luke McCormick’s
resignation was approved at Monday’s Great Bend City Council meeting without
any comment or recognition of his service.
The council approved the resignation 7-0 and moved on to the next agenda item.
Following the meeting, Great Bend Interim City Administrator Logan Burns said
Deputy Chief Brent Smith would handle McCormick’s duties on an interim
basis. The process to hire a new fire chief will be prolonged until Great Bend
finds an administrator.
"It will be after we hire a city administrator," said Burns. "Being that far down the road, whoever comes in, some of it will be up to them."
McCormick was appointed fire chief in September 2017 following the retirement
of Mike Napolitano. McCormick has been with the Fire Department since 1996. He
started as a firefighter and was promoted to captain in 2008.
