The pre-construction meeting for the new fencing at both sets of tennis courts at Veterans Memorial Park was held Oct. 30. Members from the Great Bend Recreation Commission met with Eldridge Fencing, Concrete Services and Great Bend Public Lands Director Scott Keeler.

GBRC Executive Director Diann Henderson says fencing materials are on order and hopes the project to replace the fencing and add concrete extensions for sidewalk and spectator areas will get underway within the next four weeks.

"When work commences, we'll have media releases going out noting that the tennis courts will be closed during the construction process," said Henderson. "We hope patrons will stay off the courts while we are taking fencing down, putting up new fencing and running concrete."

Knowing that the original fencing from 1970 needed to be replaced, the Great Bend Rec Commission moved forward with the project following wind storm damage to the fencing this past summer.

The $61,784 fencing project calls for two fences on the north side of the tennis court perimeters to enclose the spectator area. Concrete Services will pour cement for sidewalks around both tennis courts for $30,392.

While the work is scheduled to be done by next February, Henderson is hopeful the project will be completed much sooner.
