Trying to break old habits on how traffic enters McDonald’s

If you are craving a meal from McDonald’s in Great Bend and you are traveling westbound on 10th Street, turn left or south onto Harrison Street to enter.

INSTRUCTIONS REPEATED: If you want a meal from McDonald's and you are westbound on 10th Street, you MUST turn left onto Harrison to enter.

That’s the simple message from the City of Great Bend, but breaking bad habits takes time.

To increase safety and prevent traffic from crossing the double yellow lines, the city installed plastic delineators this past summer along the turn lane on 10th in front of the McDonald’s entrance.

The Great Bend City Council was notified by the restaurant owner Robert Lane that McDonald’s sales dropped 15% compared to last year since the delineators were installed. City Administrator Kendal Francis says the city is doing everything they can to help inform motorists about the change.

City crews placed a sign a couple blocks east of the 10th & Harrison turn to inform motorists on how to enter the restaurant. There is also a sign at the intersection along the light pole. Francis says the city will now make the sign a couple blocks east much larger to catch drivers’ attention.

"We are hoping that will get motorists' attention to let them know they will be turning onto Harrison to enter McDonald's," said Francis. "We will try to make sure we are doing everything we can to alert customers on how to enter correctly."

The new sign, informing motorists to turn south onto Harrison to enter McDonald’s, will be approximately a 4'-by-7' sign.

The city is also working with McDonald’s to place a “no left turn” sign on the restaurant’s 10th Street exit.

INSTRUCTIONS REPEATED: Westbound traffic on 10th Street MUST turn south onto Harrison to enter McDonald's.
