The City of Great Bend is moving forward with the splash pad installation at Veterans Memorial Park as the city council voted 6-0 Monday to approve the bid from Athco LLC for $680,000. The size of the splash pad will be approximately 50’ x 70’ and includes a 5’ concrete apron around the perimeter to provide a total splash pad area of nearly 2,500 square feet.
Interim City
Administrator Logan Burns said the Athco bid does not include shade structure
or benches.
"That would be something additional we would have to look at," said Burns. "I have been in talks with groups around town that are open to a conversation to have that, but right now this does not include that."
The feature comes with a 3,000-gallon storage tank to recycle the water. Athco
intends to start the project before the end of the year to have the feature
complete by next May. From there, Burns said the city can modify the
surroundings how they see fit.
"The thought was to maybe have a shelter so you could rent it out for birthday parties," said Burns. "There are plenty of options. It's just which route we want to go. At least if we get this going, we get on the schedule and we can keep this thing moving forward."
The project is funded through the .15% quality of life sales tax.
