There was a lot of movement in downtown Great Bend Friday, Aug. 6, especially on Forest Avenue. The Great Bend Alive Plaza made its debut with live music, food, games and drinks along the sidewalks and street on Forest, between Main and Williams streets.
Great Bend Economic Development Director
Sara Hayden said she was thrilled to see people able to enjoy the outdoor fun.
"This is probably even more exciting for my board because they started this dream before I even got here," said Hayden. "This has been over a year in the works. It has definitely had its obstacles but it's even better than I imagined."
The street was barricaded to prevent traffic from coming through while tables, musical guests and games were spread out on the street from 5-8 p.m. Citizens were allowed to grab food or alcoholic drinks from restaurants on Forest Avenue and bring them outside in the Common Consumption Area. Lumpy’s bar served beverages under a tent and Charlie’s Place also offered drinks.
Hayden said the
lights around the trees along Forest Avenue are permanent and the Alive Plaza
board will keep adding features.
"This really is a baby step in the movement," said Hayden. "We're excited to hear the feedback from everyone because that will fuel our direction. There will be benches to come, more flowers and things like that."
The entertainment district will take place every other Friday during nice-weather days with the next event scheduled for Aug. 20.
