The brisk, fall air has arrived in central Kansas and with that, many citizens are planning on making use of their fire pits.
The City of Hoisington has a fairly lengthy ordinance on “outdoor fireplaces and recreational fires.”
Hoisington
Code Enforcement Officer Dolores Kipper said fire pits cannot be operated
within 25 feet of a structure, property line, public right of way or
combustible materials.
"The rule applies to how close the fire can be to any building, your garage, house and fence," said Kipper. "Please make yourself familiar with that."
Trash, garbage, leaves, asphalt, paints, cardboard, construction debris or
metal is not allowed as fuel.
"All you should be burning in your fire pit is clean, dry wood," said Kipper. "Just keep it clean for your neighbors and everyone involved."
Kipper reminds everyone if a fire is burning or smoldering, it must be attended
at all times until it is completely extinguished.
