Great Bend Community Coordinator Christina Hayes admitted she was nervous heading into last Saturday’s Party in the Park at Veterans Memorial Park. With the spike in COVID-19 cases, Hayes was fearful not many people would show up for outdoor festivity.

Despite having to cancel the obstacle mud run due to lack of entries, Hayes said the party went outstanding with great weather.

The day started with a mud volleyball tournament and a wet/dry parade where participants can choose to get wet from the vehicles passing by.

"We had 11 entries for the parade," said Hayes. "I think it's taking people some time to understand the concept of a wet/dry parade. We asked the community in Colorado that we stole the idea from and it took them eight years for people to come and now thousands of people come into their tiny town to celebrate the parade."

The Mega Kite display had enough wind to fly their kites. There was also an Optimist kids fun zone, “Anything that Floats” race, 82 entries for the car show, musical acts, fireworks and a donut eating contest.

Hayes estimated between 2,500 and 3,000 people showed up Aug. 14 for Party in the Park.
