The landscape of USD 428 continues to change. At Monday's meeting, Assistant Superintendent John Popp confirmed for the board that three recent property sales involving the district will all be finalized by Dec. 19. He also updated the board on possible changes to the former Washington Elementary building at Washington and Lakin Aves.
"There are two parts to the Washington building," he said. "There's the newer part that was built circa the 1950s, I think, then the older part that was built in the 1900s. We have been talking for a while we'd like to tear down the old part. It's just an old building and there are a lot of issues."
The newer part of the building is currently utilized as the Parent Teacher Resource Center (PTRC). Popp said the goal is to demolish the 100-year-old portion of the building and make some renovations to the newer part, including updated bathrooms and HVAC improvements.
The board took no action Monday night and Popp said he will contact Schaefer Architecture to examine the possibilities with the building. The PTRC is a way for USD 428 to give back to the community and taxpayers. Read more about the center by CLICKING HERE.
