The Great Bend Recreation Commission is currently looking to replace a
piece of equipment at the My BackYard Playground because of vandalism. One of
the musical instruments in the keypad sustained vandalism and GBRC Executive
Director Diann Henderson said they can visit with the manufacturer to replace
the part that is broken or consider a new piece.
"I can go out and receive other quotes," said Henderson. "There are some newer pieces out there besides the standard xylophone if you're really wanting to look at something that has come out in the last two years versus something that is four or five years old."
Due to COVID-19 and manufacturing delays, the Recreation Commission may need to
substitute this style of musical piece with another style. Replacing the
existing part is estimated to cost $3,000 - $4,000. A brand-new feature could
cost $8,000 - $10,000.
My BackYard opened in 2015, and the playground on 18th Street has
received other forms of vandalism over the years. Henderson said video from
security cameras has captured some of the vandalism which is turned over to law
enforcement.
"We have to replace the mallets because sometimes they are cut off," said Henderson. "Recently, we had someone spread ink on the drums and on the tables. Staff has worked to get some of that off. One drum top now has a couple of spots but not to the point where we need to replace it."
The Great Bend Recreation Commission Board advised Henderson to look for a
similar musical feature or find an upgraded piece.
