Disseminating information can be a useful tool for law enforcement. That's now a little easier for the Barton County Sheriff's Office, thanks to a new electronic sign at the station. Undersheriff Steve Billinger is pleased with the update, even if the sign is not quite brand new.

"It's going to be for information for the community on law enforcement topics," he said. "It actually came from the health department. They upgraded their sign, so we got their old sign. We're going to be able to put messages up there on various topics for public awareness."

Some of those topics may include announcements of classes, like the concealed carry course, weather alerts, or just positive messages from the sheriff's office to the community.

Ownership of the sign was simply transferred from the health department to the sheriff's office, though the sheriff's office did pay for Mark's Custom Signs to mount it, and for customed paneling to feature the sheriff emblem. It will be the first new sign at the sheriff's office in more than 30 years.

"That old sign used to be the mortuary services' sign," Billinger said. "The current sheriff back then, Jim Daily, had new panels made for the sheriff's office back at that time. It's been a long time coming needing to be upgraded. Being an electronic sign, that's even cooler."
