The cost of insurance premiums rarely goes down but sometimes customers can still win. At Monday's city council meeting, Cassidy Smith with Alliance Insurance Group presented the city of Hoisington with a check for nearly $21,000 from the 2022-23 policy year.

"By you guys being with EMC, you're eligible for their Safety Dividend Program," Smith . "What that is, they take every city they have insured in the state of Kansas, which is 400-410 cities, and they throw them all into a group. At the end of the year, if that group is profitable you guys get a check. If it's not profitable, we don't charge anything, you just don't get a check that year."

Smith told the council he has been able to present a check to the city at least a dozen times. He thanked city staff for staying on top of issues to minimize the need for claims.

"I did find the eight years, counting this year with dividends, and we have given you guys a little over $177,000 back in dividends," Smith said.

Alliance Insurance is an EMC Premiere Partner. For the 2022-23 policy year, the company returned more than $4.3 million in premiums to its member cities.
