Technology is everywhere, and that includes in the hands of our children. Smartphones, laptops, tablets and the apps that fill them has completely changed what childhood looks like over the last 20 plus years. Because of this, social media has become a large part of many teenager’s daily life. In fact, a 2018 survey found that 45% of teenagers on online constantly and 97% used a social media platform like Facebook, Instagram, or Snapchat.
“Think Before You Post” the Power of Social Media is a presentation originated from Sports In Kansas that is being given to high schools all over the state.
Chet Kuplen, CEO and Founder of Sports in Kansas, says while the presentation talks about online reputation, viral posting, cyberbully and the positives and negatives of social media, he also stresses the importance of communicating without technology.
“When you apply for a job; you can’t send a text message. You’ve got to be able to get in front of people and body language, communicate, look people in the eye, shake their hand, and all that. It’s more than just about thinking before posting on Facebook or Twitter.”
Kuplen also explains that what you post on the internet today, may come back to haunt you in the future.
“On top of that, there’s a power thing out there called Google that anyone can search you anytime and anywhere. If you did something in 2012 when you were 14 years old, we can pop that up. What are we going to figure out about you on your online profile and what’s your reputation online?”
Kuplen says he also explains the positive side of social media; networking, growing and building your business, and promoting yourself whether it’s academic, athletics or in business.
The “Think Before You Post” program is being presented in Claflin and Ellinwood high schools this week.
