The college’s Board of Trustees took time Tuesday afternoon to recognize the achievement of faculty member Kara Brauer.

Dr. Kathy Kottas, Barton’s Dean of Workforce Training, said one of the gold standards in nursing is to become nationally certified. Brauer was able to receive the distinction as a certified nurse educator (CNE).

"It has been a long time, I don't know if ever, Barton has had a nursing faculty become nationally certified," said Kottas. "Kara studied on her own time and accomplished passing the national certification exam with the National League of Nursing."

Brauer graduated from Great Bend High School and currently resides in Ellinwood. Brauer began working fulltime with Barton Community College in the fall of 2015 as a nursing instructor.

"I worked really hard with Brenda Glendenning," said Brauer. "I worked to know our curriculum and to know what accreditors need from us. I found out that's a passion of mine. It's rewarding and nice to have that acknowledgement."

Kottas mentioned Brauer will mentor faculty nurses and will be looked upon for her expertise.
