It never hurts to try. Jordaan Memorial Library staff in Larned applied for a neighborhood use grant to help pay for a new air conditioning system. When the project failed to meet the parameters for that particular grant, Golden Belt Community Foundation Program Officer Teresa Powelson reached out to the Glenn and Elaine Mull Family Fund for help.
"We're able to give them the opportunity to fund things that are close to home or close to their heart," Powelson said. "It's really just providing the donors with the information that we know, and a lot of that comes in the form of applications and competitive grant cycles. That's how I learn about a lot of those projects and programs. If I know I can't fund them with the dollars I have here at the foundation, I reach out to those donors."
Library Director Christy Meyer said Grain Belt Express contributed $500 toward the project, and library staff raised more than $1,000. But the Mull Family Fund came through big with the remaining $115,630.
"Our library has four air conditioning units and only two are running at the moment," said Meyer. "That will replace all four of them."
Jordaan Memorial Library, 724 Broadway Street in Larned, is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each weekday and is closed on the weekends.
