The City of Great Bend made 22 new hires in 2019, with the majority of them coming from the Public Works Department. Public Works is responsible for streets, property maintenance enforcement, water, and sewer and wastewater.
There were 13 new hires this year for Public Works and Great Bend Human Resources Director Randy Keasling says the city is not done hiring for that department.
With the departures and new hires in that department, the city’s employee turnover rate as a whole for full-time workers was 20 percent in 2019.
"Public Works was the biggest challenge this year," said Keasling. "I am hopeful for 2020 that we will see a turnaround there and see things change."
The Great Bend Police Department had four employees leave this year, the Fire Department had five, and Public Lands had one worker leave.
Keasling noted the city plans to add two new positions in 2020. The new positions include Utility Billing Supervisor and Events Center Serviceperson I.
