The newest hired police officer for the Great Bend Police Department was introduced to the Great Bend City Council Monday night. The department is designed for 33 full-time commissioned police officers, but Chief Steve Haulmark said he was given the authority to hire one officer more than the allotted manpower.

Introducing Lane Elmore as the newest officer, Elmore now puts the police department at “plus one” for their staff. Haulmark said this will help with the amount of time it takes to get an officer certified and trained and with the issues regarding turnover.

"Mr. Elmore is a veteran having served five years in the United States Marine Corp," said Haulmark. "He's originally from Downs, Kansas but moved back here because he has family in Hoisington."

Haulmark announced last month that the Great Bend Police Department is at full strength for the first time since 2018.
