One of the large storage buildings utilized by the Barton County Road and Bridge Department was damaged during the July 16, 2023 hail and wind storm. In February, the board of commissioners approved a bid of $316,420 from Streel Builders Construction to replace the shed. Tuesday morning, Public Works Director Chris Schartz asked for a small addendum to the project.

"Steel Builders came up to me and presented a proposal to furnish and install an interior liner panel for the inside of the building," he said. "Those panel walls would be about seven feet, nine-inches tall, 26-guage steel colored liner panel. Basically, what that would do is protect the insulation on the inside. It would help insulate the building a little bit better and protect the inner structure of the building."

Several commissioners agreed the liner will increase the longevity of the building and the $6,226 bid could have been included in the original project.

"This is made out of steel and the other one was made out of wood and steel," Schartz said. "It's going to hold up for a long, long time."

The damaged structure, which was 35 feet deep and 105 feet long, was originally built in the 1950s. The new Behlen All-Steel building is 50 x 180 x 16 feet to better accommodate county equipment.
