Sometimes it is the small things in life that can bring pure joy. A
mundane project at the Great Bend Sports Complex will please anyone that has
watched a baseball or softball game from their own folding chair or the first row of the bleachers.
When the Sports Complex was first constructed in 2012, the middle hub of
seating was supposed to be raised. Without the elevated surface a metal bar
from the chain link fence cuts right across your vision if sitting in a folding
chair or in the first row of the bleachers.
Great Bend Recreation Commission Director Chris Umphres said a project last
week lowered the bar from 4' to 3' off the ground.
"You'll also see a new black netting," said Umphres. "We'll have the chain link fence lowered and brand new black netting all the way across. You won't have any chain link in your way. We're used to the netting before, but this will be a non-weathered net."
The bar and net upgrades were combined with the addition of a batter’s eye beyond
the centerfield fence on Field 1.
