The Great Bend High School forensics team placed fifth earlier this month in the 5A Kansas State High School Activities Association Championship Tournament in Salina.
Junior Eave Taylor and sophomore Thomas Henrikson were named 5A state champions in Duo Interpretation. Senior Malachi Wasson placed 2nd in Humorous Interpretation, and freshman Darcy Feist took home a 4th place medal in Prose.
Kim Heath, the High School's forensics coach, explained some of the reasons she believed the team was so successful this year.
“They support each other,” Heath said. “They strive personally to improve, but the success is fed off of each other. They see their peers do something; they want to try that or work as hard as them. They just really are a joy to work with.”
The state tournament in Salina was the end of the regular season for the Panthers. However, the team will be represented by Isaiah Smith, Malachi Wasson, Alondra Alvarez, Milena Carbajal and Darcy Feist at the National Speech and Debate Association national tournament in Louisville, Kentucky next month.
