With new turf on the way, the Great Bend Sports Complex was selected to host another Class 2-1A State Baseball Championship. The Great Bend Recreation Commission received an agreement from the Kansas State High School Activities Association to host the state tournament May 26-27, 2022.

Great Bend Rec Executive Director Diann Henderson is thrilled the next tournament will take place on the resurfaced field.

"I think Great Bend can be very excited bringing back state baseball, especially with new turf," said Henderson. "Everything will look new and fresh. It's just going to be a great environment for us this year."

Hellas Construction is handling the $1.36 million project to install turf on the infields and bullpen areas at the four Sports Complex fields and nearby Langrehr Field. Henderson noted installation is on schedule and the facility could see turf placed down by November.

KSHSAA was very much aware of Great Bend’s initiative to turf their fields prior to the selection as one of five baseball championship sites in the state.

"At some point in time, it was highly recommended when they select such complexes, that we continue improvements in our complexes," said Henderson. "One item of improvement was turf."

Great Bend has hosted the past seven Class 2-1A State Baseball Championships.
