With the passing of Barton County Commissioner Kenny Schremmer on Nov. 26, the Barton County Republican Committee needed to vote in a replacement to serve the remaining two years of Schremmer’s term in District 1.

Needing at least 51% of the vote, or a majority, the Committee voted for Kirby Krier to take over as commissioner.

"I bring a lot of experience," said Krier. "I know almost all the department heads and elected officials here."

Krier’s experience comes from being elected to the Barton County Commission in 1999 and serving a total of nine years on the governing body. The Claflin High School and Kansas State University graduate started farming southwest of Claflin in 1977.

"I have agriculture land and operations in both Hoisington and Claflin," said Krier. "I have also worked in the oil patch."

There were eight candidates that were nominated for the commissioner seat. Krier received eight of the 14 votes from the Committee to earn the position. Other individuals that were nominated for the seat included: Jeff Donecker, Scott Fleming, Mike Patton, Rick Nulton, Kyle Roberts, Lloyd Basgall and Jeff Zoller.

Krier’s name will now be forwarded onto the Governor Laura Kelly’s office for approval.
