A $66,060 project to install lighting around the walking path at Veterans Memorial Park in Great Bend started this week, and city staff is hopeful to finish the work next week. Trenching and installing electrical conduit began earlier this week, and concrete was poured for the pole bases.

Assistant City Administrator Logan Burns said they will let the concrete cure before installing the light fixtures next week.

"Some of the spots we have taken out parts of the concrete," said Burns. "We have about six areas where we had to take out sidewalk. We'll be pouring those back in this week as well. Please be careful when you are in that area."

The project is funded through the .15% quality of life sales tax. The work includes 20 light poles, each 20' tall. The city was careful with the lighting on the north side of the path, next to the houses, with an accessory that limits light going back toward the homes.
