Free lunch, giveaways and a ninja course…May 30 is shaping out to be a whale of a day. The Great Bend Recreation Commission announced a grand opening for their newest features at the My Backyard Playground will begin at 11:45 a.m. on May 30.
Great Bend Rec Executive Director Chris Umphres said the new equipment will resemble what is seen on the television show, American Ninja Warrior, and there will be a 50'-long, climbing rock wall.
"If you have driven by, the Ninja Course is there and the turf is all laid out," said Umphres. "The rock climbing wall group will come in next week and peel back the turf, put it into the concrete, bolt it down and fix the turf. We're excited for it."
The grand opening at the Activity Center on 18th Street will run from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. The first 200 people in attendance will be offered jambalaya, and a ribbon cutting will take place at 12:30 p.m.
The Ninja Course cost $115,000, the rock wall $164,000 and the turf and installation $192,000.
