Cody Cale just wanted to watch some basketball. The district support specialist for USD 428 Great Bend, instead, turned into a bit of a hero. At Monday's board of education meeting, Superintendent Khris Thexton presented Cale with the R.O.S.E. award to Recognize Outstanding Support of Education.
"Cody was at a varsity basketball game and noticed a person in distress who was turning blue as they exhibited the universal sign of choking," Thexton said. "Cody quickly proceeded to perform the Heimlich Maneuver to eject the throat obstruction. Cody's quick response and knowledge of the maneuver changed a dangerous situation into a positive ending."
The award is a token of appreciation for district employees who go above and beyond. Employees are nominated by other district employees and administrators.
