There are plenty of people concerned about the extremely low temperatures that the state is experiencing over the next few days, and the Great Bend Fire Department also has worries on how citizens combat the cold.
GBFD Fire Inspector Mark Orth reminds everyone to keep a three-foot clearance around
space heaters and avoid using them at night.
"Keep the combustibles away," said Orth. "Try not to use your ovens for heat. They are not made to run with the door open, especially if it is a gas oven."
If using a space heater, make sure it is on a stable surface, the cords are not
damaged and do not use extension cords or power strips to plug in the heater.
Orth also suggests inspecting your smoke detectors and fire alarms monthly to
ensure that they are functioning properly.
