Hoisington battles Lyons on Friday for the top spot in the district, with both teams undefeated in district matchups. It’s not just important for the district matchups, it’s also the regular season home finale, which means it’s senior night at Elton Brown Field.
The Cardinals have 13 seniors on the roster, and head coach Zach Baird says they all have an important role they’ve played that’s worth celebrating.
"Any district game is a big game for us. Because, all games matter with the way we do seeding in the playoffs now, but district games are a little bit more important. It just has a little bit more overall meaning on how the postseason is going to play out.
"But it's also senior night for us. We've got 13 of them. You know, I love these guys. We've got 38 guys on our roster, and from our top senior to our bottom freshman, they all have a role and no role is more important than the other one. They're all 'main guys.' But I love our seniors. When you have that much time with them, they're a special group. All 13 made 90% or more attendance over the summer.
"That's kind of been the message this week. 'Hey, it's Senior Night. You guys are a special, special group. Let's send you guys out the right way and let's play to the standard. The standard that's been set by guys before you."
Hoisington and Lyons kickoff at 7 on Friday in a battle for control of the district, with coverage starting at 6:30 on 100.7 Eagle Country and online at GreatBendPost.com.
