Cougars climb four spots Sunday to close season-opening SWIBC weekend

Opening the 2026-27 season with a two-event weekend in Texas, the Barton Community College men's bowling team placed 16th in Saturday's SWIBC I before climbing four spots to finish 12th in Sunday's SWIBC II at Lucky Strike Garland in Garland, Texas.

The Cougars will return to the lanes Wednesday, Oct. 14, for an exhibition at Ottawa University before making their closest tournament stop of the season Oct. 17-18 at the Tier-I Mid-States Championships in Wichita.

Saturday's season-opening competition featured four individual games followed by 10 Baker rounds, with Barton compiling 4,440 total pins to finish 16th in the 18-team varsity field. The Cougars totaled 3,043 pins through the individual portion before adding 1,397 across Baker competition.

Making his Barton debut, Jesus Lucero led the Cougar lineup through the individual portion, finishing 51st overall with a four-game total of 698 and 174.5 average. Lucero produced Barton's lone 200-plus round with a 201 in Game 3, while Tucker Huband followed 12 spots back in 63rd with a 677 total and 169.3 average, closing his set with a team's second-best 193.

Newman University captured the team title with 6,165 total pins, finishing 322 pins ahead of runner-up Oklahoma Christian University's 5,843, while the University of Texas-San Antonio rounded out the top three with 5,664. Newman's Kane (KJ) Burns completed the sweep of the top honors, leading the 181-participant field with a four-game total of 911 and 227.8 average, finishing 30 pins ahead of Louisiana State University's Braiden Torres.

Sunday's competition shifted to a six-game individual format, with the Cougars responding by climbing four spots in the team standings to finish 12th among the 17-team varsity field with 5,149 total pins.

Lucero once again paced the Barton lineup, making a 32-place jump from Saturday to finish 19th overall with a six-game total of 1,133 and 188.8 average. Lucero surpassed the 200 mark three times, opening with a 214 before firing off a team-best 235 in Game 3 and adding a 212 in Game 5.

Making his Cougar debut after sitting out Saturday's opening event, Wyatt Soper made an immediate impact with Barton's second-highest finish of the day, placing 37th overall with a six-game total of 1,089 and 181.5 average. Soper eclipsed the 200 mark twice, rolling a 203 in Game 4 before closing his debut with a 213 in the finale.

Also making 24-hour improvements were Huband and Paxton McCloud. Huband improved two spots from Saturday, finishing third on the Cougar squad and 61st overall with a six-game total of 1,011 and 168.5 average, highlighted by a 210 in Game 4. McCloud made a 30-spot jump of his own, finishing 78th overall while averaging 183.0 across five games and surpassing the 200 mark twice with games of 211 and 202.

Completing the weekend sweep was Newman University topping Sunday's field with 6,212 pins, followed by Southern Nazarene University in second at 5,884 and Dallas Baptist University in third at 5,651. Newman's Burns also completed an individual sweep, leading the 175-participant field with a six-game total of 1,326 and 221.0 average, finishing 71 pins ahead of teammate Liam Hardman.
