ATLANTA (AP) — Before the first 12-team College Football Playoff even started, there were already plenty of people suggesting changes for determining future national champions.

Ohio State (13-2) and Notre Dame (14-1) aren’t quibbling, at least not this year.

Had it remained a four-team playoff, the Buckeyes’ loss to a middling Michigan team and the Irish’s defeat against Northern Illinois&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/cfp-notre-dame-ohio-state-texas-276477d7ff38e93a3625632d515f189b">would likely have been deal-breakers.</a>

“Our season would be over,” Notre Dame defensive lineman Howard Cross III said. “Now we have a chance to play in this game.”

Two of the biggest brands in the sport will square off in the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/cfp-ohio-state-notre-dame-7ae9fdd88a75526e5be3f4fe4ed0adba">CFP championship game</a>&nbsp;Monday night at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. The game will end the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/cfp-notre-dame-ohio-state-d9d92d4e7ec72a1f4259ab1fee931a9d">longest season in college football history</a>&nbsp;— 150 days since starting Aug. 24.

“I think a lot of teams are starting their offseason program,” Buckeyes offensive lineman Donovan Jackson said with a laugh, “and we’re still playing.”

Ohio State will be playing for its first championship since 2014 and Notre Dame for its first since 1988.

The Buckeyes already had a one-point road loss to Oregon when, as a three-touchdown favorite, they were&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/michigan-ohio-state-score-top-25-5ea06c30f642e2f94bdac6fbf9a72848">upset 13-10 at home by Michigan</a>&nbsp;on Nov. 30. Ohio State survived its crushing defeat on the strength of its four wins over top-five opponents, tied for most ever in a season. The Buckeyes have beaten Tennessee, Oregon and Texas in the playoff.

Players on both teams said they used their humbling losses as a reset.

Ohio State coach Ryan Day said the journey’s twists and turns won’t mean much if his team falls short Monday.

“That’s the sobering reality of this game, that nobody cares about what you go through, and you’ve got to win that final one to finish the mission,” he said. “That’s it for our guys, and as much as some of these wins have been great wins for us, to me, it’s about winning this final game.”

Notre Dame closed the regular season with 10 straight wins, most in lopsided fashion, and its nation-leading streak has reached 13 after playoff wins over Indiana, Georgia and Penn State.

Xavier Watts, the Irish’s two-time All-America safety, said he and his teammates didn’t doubt they could bounce back after getting embarrassed in their second game.

“We went against Purdue the next week and we kind of went out there and let all our anger out,” Watts said. “Each week we just continued to improve. I just think each week we continued to get better and better and seen growth, and here we are now.”

Ohio State was listed as an 8.5-point favorite by BetMGM Sportsbook on Sunday. There have been two larger lines for a championship game in the CFP era. The Buckeyes have bad memories of the place. The 2022 team squandered two double-digit leads and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/college-football-sports-ohio-cfp-national-championship-georgia-bulldogs-9ce931f46a7dfca53f04db37a65c5ce0">lost 42-41 to Georgia</a>&nbsp;in the Peach Bowl CFP semifinal.

Ohio State has outscored its first three playoff opponents 42-0 in the first quarter. Notre Dame has gone scoreless over the first 15 minutes in its past two games.

Notre Dame has been at its best in the last four minutes of the second quarter and first four minutes of the third. The Irish have a 148-17 scoring advantage in the so-called “middle eight,” including 23-10 in their three CFP games. Ohio State has been outscored 14-10 in the middle eight.

Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman was awarded a new long-term contract last month, but that hasn’t stopped his name from being mentioned for the Chicago Bears job. The 39-year-old is 33-9 with the Irish.

Buckeyes, Irish used humbling losses as springboards to national title game

TOKYO (AP) — Ichiro Suzuki is all about baseball, but he’s much more than that in Japan.

Back home, he’s a wellspring of national pride, much like&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/world-series-japan-ohtanis-hometown-e3cad030c39f7546a2f7bd100fa6e3b9">Shohei Ohtani</a>&nbsp;now. His triumphs across the Pacific buoyed the nation as Japan’s economy sputtered through the so-called lost decades of the 1990s and into the 2000s.

“He healed the wounds in Japan’s national psyche,” Kiyoteru Tsutsui, professor of sociology at Stanford University, told The Associated Press.

On Tuesday, he’s expected to be the first Japanese player elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame, and possibly only the second player chosen unanimously after New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera.

Ichiro debuted in Major League Baseball in 2001 with the Seattle Mariners, the first Japanese position player to span the Pacific and an instant star. Left-handed pitcher Hideo Nomo preceded him, and Hideki Matsui came just after, both boosting the country’s confidence in a period of national malaise.

Tsutsui termed Ichiro a “great cultural export,” akin to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/hello-kitty-50-birthday-anniversary-sanrio-fb7569605d5e302ddbe92a877fd1768d">Hello Kitty</a>, sushi, manga and others creations from Japan.

“It may not be an exaggeration to say that Ichiro represents Japan’s transition from the faceless economic animal to a producer of global cultural icons,” Tsutsui said.

There was something in Ichiro for every ‘yakyu’ fan

Ichiro started playing baseball at age 7 on a Little League team near Nagoya in central Japan. Sure, baseball is baseball, but the culture around the game — known as “yakyu” (field ball) — is special.

He was driven by his father, Nobuyuki Suzuki, and came up through what is often described as a regimented baseball-training system that some link to the martial arts and even samurai history.

Ichiro grew to be hip in the majors, which fit the nation’s branding as “Cool Japan.” On the way, he bumped into pressure in Japan to conform, expressed in the saying “deru kugi wa utareru.”

Roughly in English: “The nail that sticks up gets hammered down.”

“Young people flocked to watch him because they saw his do-it-my-way rebel spirit,” William Kelly, emeritus professor of Japanese studies at Yale University, wrote in an email. “Old fans were drawn to his seriousness of purpose and his force of concentration.’

Ichiro developed his unique swing very early, lifting his right leg and almost running to first base before hitting the ball. Repeatedly told in Japan to change it, he declined.

His given name Ichiro — ’ichi” means “one” in Japanese — started appearing on the back of his jersey in 1994 with the Orix BlueWave. Suzuki is a very common family name, and manager Akira Ohgi wanted to single out Ichiro for attention.

“I see Ichiro as an artist, a craftsman,” said Shimpei Miyagawa, an assistant professor at Temple University in Japan. “The point is that Ichiro is someone who stands out in both singular talent and longevity in a game that is ironically played as a team sport.”

A Japanese, Miyagawa taught high school in Massachusetts and recalls students wearing Ichiro jerseys — in the heart of Boston Red Sox country.

“To me that speaks volumes about the cultural breakthrough,” Miyagawa said.

Ichiro’s games were shown live and on tape when be began playing with the Mariners.

Nomo had a similar effect when he debuted with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1995. Ichiro topped that interest level, wrote Robert Whiting in his book “The Samurai Way of Baseball.”

“Ichiro was the first to appear front and center ever single day — a slender Japanese among pumped up musclemen, sparking big American teammates to victory — and the public could simply not get enough of this delectable sight,” he wrote.

Whiting wrote that few Japanese had seen much of Ichiro when he played in Japan for the BlueWave in the western city of Kobe.

“His face adorned billboards all over Japan. Yet he nearly always played to half-empty stands, in games that were almost never telecast nationally.”

Ichiro will go into the Hall of Fame as professional baseball’s all-time leader in hits with 4,367 (3,089 in MLB and 1,278 in Japan) — more even than Pete Rose’s 4,256. He broke George Sisler’s single-season hits mark of 257 in 2004. The new mark is 262.

He played&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/ba21f85a6e1b47788351dd84073f6bd6">his last two games in 2019</a>&nbsp;in the Tokyo Dome against the Athletics, going 0 for 5 for the Mariners and then retiring at 45.

“I really wanted to play until I was 50,” he said after his final game. “But I couldn’t do it. But it was a way of motivating myself. If I had never said that, I don’t think I would have come this far.”

Now 51 years old, Ichiro is still going strong

Ichiro made global news just over a year ago when&nbsp;<a href="https://www.mlb.com/news/ichiro-breaks-window-with-home-run" target="_blank">he broke a window</a>&nbsp;with a 426-foot home run while teaching students batting techniques at a Japanese high school.

Much of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.btr.co.jp/" target="_blank">Ichiro’s early life</a>&nbsp;is documented in the modest Ichiro Exhibition Room in his hometown of Toyoyama. It’s situated in a residential area, a four-story, inconspicuous building; a shrine filled with Ichiro memorabilia.

It’s only open on the weekends and it’s sure to become popular as this summer’s Cooperstown induction nears. A marker guiding tourists to the office is graced with a silhouette of left-handed hitting Ichiro — his right leg raised as he begins his swing.

Ichiro’s Cooperstown call comes amid a surge of Japanese talent

Baseball was introduced into schools in Japan in 1872 by an American teacher, and many have used it to gauge the country’s march toward modernization after centuries of isolation from the West.

Ichiro’s Hall of Fame enshrinement coincides with a surge of Japanese players shining in MLB. Ohtani is a singular talent in the history of the sport, and he was one of a dozen Japanese exports in the majors last season, including Yu Darvish, Shota Imanaga and $325 million Dodgers ace Yoshinobu Yamamoto.

“Ichiro and Ohtani command so much respect from their peers and the public alike because they are focused on honing their crafts,” Tsutsui wrote.

Phenom pitcher&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/roki-sasaki-free-agent-latin-america-c1ba952d8ce9636a3381dd2264a58650">Roki Sasaki</a>, who announced Friday he’s leaving Japan to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/dodgers-sasaki-contract-951ea6193b68eaf5ac739f56a47f0421">join Ohtani on the Dodgers</a>, continues the evolution.

“The Hall of Fame vote caps that process,” Tsutsui added. “And many Japanese embrace the recognition that he is one of the greatest players to ever play in the Majors.”

The Barton Community College women's track and field team began their indoor portion of the 2025 slate Saturday in Manhattan competing in the Thane Baker Invitational held at Kansas State University's Cliff Rovelto Indoor Track.

Taking on mostly fellow junior college competitors, as well as, additional athletes from both KSU and the University, Barton chalked up thirteen Top-3 finishes with 11 national qualifying performances including two making an impact on the program record book.

One of those achievements came in the 60m where sophomore&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/wtrack/2024-25/bios/smith_keliza_n0oy">Keliza Smith</a>&nbsp;sprinted her way into the 9th slot of Barton history clocking a 7.33 time to finish second in the event.

Out of the five event winners on the day,&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/wtrack/2024-25/bios/williams_cedricka_nubb">Cedricka Williams</a>&nbsp;picked up where she left off from last season as one of five sophomore performances recording a personal best by matching her program 9th furthest weight throw distance of 16.83m (55-2.75). Williams would also meet national standards in the shot put at 12.66m (41-06.50) as freshman&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/wtrack/2024-25/bios/mackey_zadie_4c4n">Zadie Mackey</a>&nbsp;punched her ticket with a two-inch better toss of 12.72m (41-08.75).

Other event winners in personal best times were sophomores Kaila Claiborne in the 400m (59.23) and&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/wtrack/2024-25/bios/walters_shone_denw">Shone Walters</a>' national qualifying in the 800m (2:16.22).&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/wtrack/2024-25/bios/ulett_asharria_pehi">Asharria Ulett</a>&nbsp;rounded out the victors with an impressive 60m hurdle debut of 8.68 in beating out fellow freshman&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/wtrack/2024-25/bios/adams_ty-yanah_jp8t">Ty'yanah Adams</a>' 8.89 as both exceeded national qualifying standards.

Barton also qualified its 4x400m relay team, the first of two squads entered in the meet headlined by Smith and Walters being joined freshmen&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/wtrack/2024-25/bios/fox_natasha_vrk7">Natasha Fox</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/wtrack/2024-25/bios/riddle_celine_7d6i">Celine Riddle</a>&nbsp;for an event winning time of 3:47.30. Smith sprints into program record book, Barton women open T&F season strong

The Barton Community College men's track and field team began their indoor portion of the 2025 slate Saturday in Manhattan competing in the Thane Baker Invitational held at Kansas State University's Cliff Rovelto Indoor Track.

Taking on mostly fellow junior college competitors, as well as, additional athletes from both KSU and the University, Barton had twelve placings among the Top-3 finishes with 8 national qualifying performances including two making an impact on the program record book.

Both of those program impacts came from sophomore&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/mtrack/2024-25/bios/hamer_trevon_pxan">Trevon Hamer</a>&nbsp;as the KSU signee enjoyed his future home indoor arena by setting the facility's triple jump record at 15.98m (52-05.25) for a Barton 6th best all-time mark.

Hamer would also lead Barton's national qualifying 1-2-3 finish in the 60m, clocking a program 9th fastest time of 6.68 with fellow sophomore&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/mtrack/2024-25/bios/belle_wanyae_s05x">Wanyae Belle</a>'s personal best 6.74 edging out freshman&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/mtrack/2024-25/bios/straker_aragorn_chr4">Aragorn Straker</a>'s 6.75.

Straker would also pick up another national ticket in the 200m with a second place 21.45 time. Sophomore&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/mtrack/2024-25/bios/chambers_corlando_fhzk">Corlando Chambers</a>&nbsp;earned his trip to nationals on a runner-up 800m clocking of 1:55.93.

Freshman&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/mtrack/2024-25/bios/adams_simeon_qd7l">Simeon Adams</a>&nbsp;also qualified while crossing just .8 seconds off from a program top ten 600-yard time of 1:11.90 in finishing runner-up in the event.

Sophomore&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/mtrack/2024-25/bios/hayles_ricardo_kdl2">Ricardo Hayles</a>&nbsp;was the lone thrower to reach standards launching a 16.39m (53-09.25 heave in the shot put.

Hamer's program impacts lead eight Cougar Track national qualifying performances

The short-handed Barton Community College wrestling team returned to action Sunday at the UCM Roger Denker Open held in Warrensburg, Missouri.

Fielding a five-man lineup, the Cougars combined for a 4-10 record in the double-elimination format that featured 202 competitors from 19 different colleges.

Barton will return to conference play Thursday evening hosting their final home dual of the season against No. 9 Pratt Community College in a 7:30 p.m. start from the Barton Gym.

<a target="_blank" href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/wrest/2024-25/bios/little_colin_v1sv">Colin Little</a>&nbsp;149-pounds paced the Barton lineup generating a 2-2 day on the mat. The freshman opened his day cruising to a 23-6 tech fall over Andrew Orloski of Quincy University while dropping to the backside in his next bout behind a 0:31 fall. Responding quickly, Little stormed back with a first period back flattening over Jared Wright of Central Methodist University before getting derailed in his fourth match in approximately 30-minutes to Northeastern Oklahoma A&amp;M's Gavin Montgomery.

Despite dropping their first bouts of the day,&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/wrest/2024-25/bios/garrett_jamal_dw5v">Jamal Garrett</a>&nbsp;(125) and&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/wrest/2024-25/bios/duarte_quiroz_edgar_hm9y">Edgar Duarte Quiroz</a>&nbsp;(184) each battled back to secure a victory before bowing out to conclude the day 2-1. Garrett secured his lone victory on the day with an second round fall while Duarte-Quiroz advanced following a medical forfeit win.

Brackets: Pratt boys, Ellinwood girls No. 1 seeds in Hoisington Cardinal Winter Jam

<a target="_blank" href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2024-25/bios/moss_brent_th5a">Brent Moss</a>&nbsp;of the 13th ranked Barton Community College men's basketball team has been named the KJCCC's Week 9 Player of the Week.

Moss posted a pair of double-double performances last week averaging 18 points behind 52.2-percent shooting and grabbed 11.5 rebounds per contest leading the Cougars' victories.

The sophomore opened the week putting together a stat stuffing night of 17 points and 13 rebounds while adding career highs of 5 assists and 3 steals in Wednesday's victory over Fort Hays Tech Northwest.

This past Saturday Moss was back at it scoring a team high 19 points and 10 rebounds to lead all five Barton's starters in double-digit scoring in the victory at Colby.

The award is Moss' second of the season, the first coming in week three, and follows&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2024-25/bios/parlow-_jr._james_9gp2">James Parlow, Jr.</a>'s honor giving Barton the league recognition for the second consecutive awarding.

Most recently Moss put up monster numbers in Wednesday loss to Independence on program top ten single game performances of 40 points with 20 rebounds in posting his 7th double-double of the season. Additionally, Moss dished out 3 assists marking the third straight game of 3+ dimes and tied a career high defensive effort of 3 blocked shots.

Now 7-4 in KJCCC play and 13-4 overall, Moss and the Cougars look to regroup on Saturday hosting No. 12 Coffeyville Community College in a 4:00 p.m. tip-off to conclude the first half of the rugged 26-game Jayhawk Conference schedule.

Barton's Moss becomes two-time KJCCC Player of the Week recipient

A pair of potential game winners missed their mark Saturday afternoon for the Barton Community College women's basketball team as the Cougars fell in overtime 71-69 hosting Coffeyville Community College.

Barton drops to 4-8 in KJCCC play and 8-10 overall while Coffeyville, receiving votes in the latest national poll, notches their fourth straight win improving to a league third best 9-3 and 14-3 on the season.

Next up is a Wednesday trip to Hutchinson to start the second trip around the league slate, facing a hungry top ranked Blue Dragon squad coming off a 67-41 loss at 3rd ranked Dodge City that snapped the program's 54-game win streak. Tip-off time slated for 5:30 p.m. at the Sports Arena.

The Cougars led by as many as eleven in the opening twenty minutes, pushing a seven-point first quarter advantage out to their largest with 5:52 in the second before going to the halftime locker room with a nine point, 36-27 advantage.

Coffeyville erased the deficit in the third quarter as foul problems began to mount for Barton while shooting just 23.5% in the frame as the teams headed to the fourth tied at 45.

The Red Ravens grabbed their first lead a minute into the quarter on a three-pointer in what would be a seesaw final nine minutes with each team momentarily having a two-possession lead, Barton obtaining theirs with 1:11 left on&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://bartoncc.prestosports.com/sports/wbkb/2024-25/bios/simpson_brittany_jg44">Brittany Simpson</a>'s three-pointer making it 60-56.

Coffeyville scored the final four points of regulation, tying it up with fourteen seconds on a pair of free throws. Following a timeout to advance the ball to mid-court,&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://bartoncc.prestosports.com/sports/wbkb/2024-25/bios/donanu_regina_yoh6">Regina Donanu</a>&nbsp;split the defense dishing to&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://bartoncc.prestosports.com/sports/wbkb/2024-25/bios/eck_alaina_m8sz">Alaina Eck</a>&nbsp;crashing in from the baseline, but the freshman's potential game winner missed its mark.

Overtime again produced trading leads including exchanging three-point blows in the final eighty seconds, Donanu knocking down a big game tying arc buster with twenty-one ticks remaining.

Coffeyville answered on their end, working the ball around for an eventual game winner in the paint. Following Barton's timeout advancing the ball with five seconds left, Donanu's 10-foot runner rimmed out but&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://bartoncc.prestosports.com/sports/wbkb/2024-25/bios/onugha_vivian_7u24">Vivian Onugha</a>'s 11th offensive rebound went for naught in not having enough time for a shot before the horn sounded.

Donanu led the Cougars with a career high 24 points, draining 4-of-9 behind the arc, grabbing 6 rebounds with a trio of assists and steals.

Onugha was saddled with foul problems, picking up her fourth foul and sent to the bench with 7:31 to go in the third quarter aiding in the Red Ravens' 18-9 frame in tying it up. Entering back for the fourth quarter and staying on the floor for the rest of the contest, the reigning KJCCC and NJCAA Player of the Week finished with 18 points and 17 rebounds in recording her eighth straight and 15th double-double of the season.

Returning from a two-game injury absence, Eck came off the bench for 13 points, 8 rebounds, and tied Donanu with a team high 3 steals.

Simpson's 6 and&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://bartoncc.prestosports.com/sports/wbkb/2024-25/bios/mapiye_gertrude_xtyg">Getrude Mapiye</a>'s 5 helped Barton to a plus-3 on the boards but the Red Ravens had a sizable 14-point advantage in the paint.

Four Red Ravens reached double figures, led by Norika Welch's 14 points and 9 rebounds as Karliey Parker's 2-of-3 behind the arc shooting led to a 13 point outing.

Karys Washington led the rebounding with 14 boards while adding 12 points for the double-double effort and dished out a game high 5 assists. Aubrey Hinshaw rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 points.

Lady Cougars' upset bid rims out in overtime loss hosting Coffeyville

Coming off a sour loss last time on the court, the 13th ranked Barton Community College men's basketball team led for most of Saturday's home hosting for a bounce-back 75-64 victory over 12th ranked Coffeyville Community College.

Victors of five straight in the series, Barton improves to 8-4 in KJCCC play and 14-4 overall while Coffeyville's four-win streak ends dropping out of the top spot of the conference race at 10-2 and moving to 14-4 on the season.

The Cougars begin the second trip around the rugged conference slate on Wednesday at Hutchinson against the third place and nationally receiving votes Blue Dragons. Tip off at the Sports Arena slated for 7:30 p.m. following the earlier women's contest.

Coffeyville's lone leads came in the first half of play, its largest at the 10:36 mark at 15-12. Turning the Red Ravens over twelve times in the opening twenty minutes, including six in the first four minutes, Barton turned the tide for good with 4:14 remaining on an 8-0 run to never trail again.

Moss took home team high scoring honors with 17 points as the reigning KJCCC Player of the Week fell short of his fourth straight double-double by collecting just 4, to go along with, 2 assists and 2 blocks.

Kindell added 14 points while matching his career high with the 9 assists to fall shy of his first collegiate double-double. The Wichita State signee also grabbed 6 rebounds and a game high 5 steals to lead the Cougars' 14 total thefts within the 23 Red Raven turnovers.

Despite being out-rebounded by 11, Barton made up for it by outscoring Coffeyville by ten points in the paint including plus-11 in fastbreak points and plus-12 in points off turnovers.

Trenton Ruth's 19 points off the bench led Coffeyville as Daniel Ntambwe added 15 points and a team high 9 rebounds. Brian Griffith, the team's season scoring leader, was held to just two points and twelve below his average on a 1-of-8 shooting night.

Cougars bounce back, No. 13 Barton men win battle over No. 12 Coffeyville 

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Patrick Mahomes has never lost in the divisional round of the playoffs with the Kansas City Chiefs.

With the Chiefs' star quarterback hitting best buddy Travis Kelce seven times for 117 yards and a touchdown and a pass rush that dragged Houston quarterback C.J. Stroud to the ground eight times, Kansas City rolled to a 23-14 victory Saturday that sent the two-time defending Super Bowl champions to the AFC title game for the seventh consecutive season.

The Chiefs are the fourth team in NFL history to follow back-to-back Lombardi Trophies by advancing to the conference title game, and the three previous lost. They will try to change that at Arrowhead Stadium next weekend against the Bills or Ravens, who&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/ravens-bills-offseason-changes-4dde27a6add38d33f319b9331fbb5aa3">play on Sunday in Buffalo</a>&nbsp;for a shot at dethroning the defending champs.

There was plenty of joking in the Kansas City locker room Saturday night. Not a whole lot in the Texans' locker room. They still have never won in six divisional games,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/texans-chiefs-score-nfl-playoffs-fb82f99972b7a618ccc128ec08b7460e">twice losing to Kansas City in devastating fashion</a>.

Stroud threw for 245 yards but was sacked eight times, while Joe Mixon — who had been questionable to play with an ankle injury — ran for 88 yards and their only touchdown.

Texans kicker Ka’imi Fairbairn missed a 55-yard field goal attempt, a PAT try and had another field-goal attempt blocked with 1:46 left, which would have kept their comeback hopes alive by making it a one-possession game.

“Knowing what we were up against in this game, we can’t make the mistakes that we made,” Texans coach DeMeco Ryans said. "We had a lot of self-inflicted mistakes that happened, whether it was special teams not converting, defensively not being where we’re supposed to be in coverage, offensively not protecting our quarterback and keeping him clean.

“On top of everything else we have to deal with,” Ryans added, "that’s going to be an uphill battle.”

The Texans’ special teams were a mess right from the start. The Chiefs nearly opened the game with&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/texans-chiefs-kris-boyd-23137058a01f4e4d956656cc9c289b97">a kick return touchdown</a>, a bizarre play that ended with Houston cornerback Kris Boyd nearly shoving his own assistant coach to the ground.

The Texans held Kansas City to a couple of field goals early, but their defense was unable to stop them late in the first half, when the bruising Kareem Hunt barreled into the end zone to give the AFC West champions a 13-3 lead.

Houston managed a 48-yard field goal through cold, swirling winds to make it a one-possession game at the break, and that late kick seemed to have revived the AFC South champions when they returned to the field for the second half.

Stroud deftly led a 15-play, 82-yard drive that soaked up most of the third quarter, picking up four third-down conversions, including one in which the QB scrambled to the sideline and absorbed a wicked hit. Mixon finished the drive with a 13-yard run, only to watch Fairbairn’s extra point that would have tied the game get blown wide right.

That miss just might have swung the momentum the other way.

Just as they have so often in winning their last eight playoff games, the Chiefs responded with a time-consuming drive of their own. Mahomes connected with Kelce four times on the 81-yard march, including the 11-yard touchdown pass to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/taylor-swift-kansas-city-chiefs-houston-texans-468b074fb9dc4f03b743593670ffdf86">his trusty tight end</a>&nbsp;as the two-time NFL MVP was getting dragged to the turf by Houston's Mario Edwards Jr.

“I thought it was going to be an interception,” Hunt said.

The Texans had two opportunities to drive for a tying touchdown. The first ended when Stroud was sacked by George Karlaftis on fourth down near midfield with about 10 minutes left. The second was stopped when Stroud misfired on back-to-back passes and Houston was forced to punt with just over seven minutes to go.

Kansas City proceeded to drive inside the Texans 10, and Harrison Butker’s field goal with 4:32 left put the game away.

“We’re fortunate we’ve got a lot of great character guys in the building,” Kelce said. "On top of that, as the years have gone on, we only got here by focusing on the task at hand. And right now, this one was great. We’re going to enjoy this one tonight. But the task at hand is going to be that AFC championship.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Hunter Dickinson had 25 points and Zeke Mayo scored 24 to lead&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/ap-top-25-college-basketball-poll">No. 9</a>&nbsp;Kansas over Kansas State 84-74 on Saturday.

Kansas (13-4, 4-2 Big 12) built a big lead to start the game and then kept K-State at arm's length. The Wildcats (7-10, 1-5) never got closer than six points.

Mayo had 14 points in the first half. Dajuan Harris Jr. had nine in the first half and six in the second.

With a chance to cut the Wildcats’ deficit to five, Max Jones missed a corner 3-pointer with 2:32 remaining.

Coleman Hawkins led the Wildcats with 15 points and 10 assists.

Kansas State: The Wildcats need to avoid big runs. A 14-0 run to start the game made it an up-hill climb all day. The Jayhawks' biggest lead was 16 points.

Kansas: The Jayhawks need KJ Adams Jr. to heal quickly. Adams suffered a partially separated right shoulder against Iowa State on Wednesday and is expected to miss several games. The Jayhawks got little production outside of Dickinson from their inside players.

The 14-0 run. Kansas hit five of its first six shots, including going 3 of 3 from beyond the arc, while K-State missed its first seven shots. The Wildcats went into halftime trailing 39-29.

K-State managed to stay in the game despite shooting just 23.1% from 3-point range. The Wildcats were just 2 of 15 in the first half. They shot 4 of 11 after halftime.

Kansas State remains on the road Wednesday night at No. 25 Baylor. Kansas visits TCU on Wednesday night.
