
The Barton Community College men's golf team rebounded from a sluggish opening round to climb four spots on the leaderboard, finishing ninth overall at the Falcon Cup Classic held at Wichita's Auburn Hills Golf Course.
After posting a season-high 328 (+40) in Monday's morning round, the Cougars responded with a 297 (+9) in the afternoon session followed by Tuesday's final-round 303 (+15) for a 54-hole total of 928 (+76). The turnaround helped Barton leapfrog three teams and finish within four shots of Hesston College in the standings.
Indian Hills Community College claimed the team title at 845 (289–277–279), followed by Friends University seven strokes back at 852 (289–276–287) and Garden City Community College in third at 870 (289–297–284).
Competing as an individual, Kobey Jackson delivered Barton's top overall finish in 25th, opening with 77 before firing a 73 in round two and closing with a 78 for a 12-over 228 total.
Leading Barton's team entry efforts, Matteu Cauvin-Piacentini paced the Cougars with a tie for 30th at 14-over 230, trimming four strokes off his opening 80 with a 76 before closing with a 2-over 74 for the team's second-best score of the tournament.
Phattarapol Ongla carded a tough 82 opening round but bounced back with Barton's lowest individual round of the tournament, a second-round even-par 72, before closing with a 77 to finish tied for 32nd at 15-over 231.
Ted Gemzell also rebounded from a rough start with a 10-stroke improvement in round two, posting a 2-over 74 followed by a steady 75 to share 41st at 17-over 233.
Landon Timmermeyer provided counting scores throughout, following an opening 83 with rounds of 75 and 77 for a 19-over 235 total and tie for 47th. Talon Reynolds rounded out the Cougar entries, posting 83s on either side of an 87 to finish 65th at 37-over 253.
Cooper Lucke was having a strong tournament as an individual, producing consistent 77s through two rounds but had to withdrawal from Tuesday's final round.
Barton will have a few weeks away from competition in preparation for the two-day NJCAA National Preview beginning Thursday, October 30 held at Newton's Sand Creek Station Golf Course.
