The Barton Community College women's soccer team cruised to a 5-0 victory Wednesday afternoon over Dodge City Community College at Cavanaugh Field, led by a second-half hat trick from Maki Kimura.
Sweeping the season's meetings, the Cougars leap back into fourth in the Jayhawk standings with 16 points at 5-5-1 and 9-6-1 overall, while the Conquistadors sit sixth with 12 points at 4-7-0 in league play and 6-7-0 on the season. Barton returns to Cavanaugh Field on Saturday for a 3:00 p.m. kickoff against conference leading No. 8 Cowley College.
Candice Burnier ignited the scoring just two minutes in, blasting home Katie Potter's through ball to the far post for her second goal of the season. Louhanne Jarry doubled the margin late in the half, drilling in Kimura's corner kick for her collegiate first marker to gift the Cougars a 2-0 advantage at intermission.
Playing with a steady 15-mile-per-hour south breeze at its back for the final 45 minutes, Barton extended its lead behind Kimura's offensive surge. The sophomore midfielder netted three goals in a five-minute stretch, first finishing Potter's far-side through ball, then striking off Ayaka Nagano's feed in front of goal before completing the hat trick by putting away Saki Takaki's corner kick for her fifth tally of the year.
Defensively, the Cougars remained solid as Leonie Chambe recorded three saves over the opening 72 minutes before giving way to the hometown product Kimberly Escobedo for the final 18 to preserve the team's second straight shutout in as many days and third clean sheet of the season.
