Producing 12 runs in Thursday's series opening victory, the Barton Community College baseball team exceeded that mark plating 18 runs to complete a sweep of Fort Scott Community College on Friday afternoon in the opening round of the Region VI Baseball Tournament at Lions Field.

Cole Schieffer tied his career high four-RBIs while Robby Bolin, Jaron Cotton and Ayden Hadley each drove in three apiece to defeat the Greyhounds for the second straight day in seven-innings with an 18-7 victory in Game 2, winning the best-of-3 series 2-0.

Moving to 39-19 on the year, the Cougars advance to the eight-team double-elimination Central District Tournament for the third straight year. Winners of six straight after the sweep, No. 10 seeded Barton will begin play Wednesday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. against the No. 2 seed and Jayhawk West champion Blue Dragons of Hutchinson Community College from Eck Stadium on the Campus of Wichita, KS. Meanwhile the Greyhounds have their season end at the hands of the Cougars for the second straight year finishing at 39-19.

The Cougars scored 15 or more runs for the 10th time this season, while putting up runs in four of the seven innings, outhitting Fort Scott for the second straight day 13-9. Barton took advantage of four Fort Scott miscues, eight walks and three hit-by-pitches. 

Jetting out to a 3-0 lead in the second, the first Greyhound error ensuing Grant Nottlemann's leadoff single and a wild pitch formed Cesar Gomez sacrifice-fly with back-to-back Schieffer and Bolin run producing doubles with two-outs capped the three-run inning.

Hadley's reaching on a Fort Scott error in the third brought in Owen Clyne's leadoff walk increasing the Cougar advantage to 4-0.

After Fort Scott closed within 4-3 in the third with a Barton error prolonging the inning creating a two-run double and run producing groundout, the Cougars answered in a big way in the fourth sending 14 to the plate and scoring nine runs stretching the lead to 13-3.

Schieffer delivered the first blow in the fourth just two batters in blasting his third-round tripper of the season scoring Hank Orr's leadoff double. Tacking on seven more runs behind a passed ball, pair of RBI Kyler Horsman and Hadley singles, two bases loaded walks by Orr and Bolin mixed between another Fort Scott miscue scoring one and ninth run crossing on Cotton's sacrifice fly.

The offensive production continued for Barton batting around in the fifth while adding five more runs. Hadley increased the lead by two with his second fence clearer of the season following Nottlemann's one-out single. Taking advantage of an Orr plunking and Schieffer walk, Bolin delivered his third RBI with his second double of the game followed by Cotton's two-run single scoring a pair to make it 18-3.

Despite the Greyhounds scoring the final four runs of the game with two in the bottom of the fifth and two in the seventh, Jackson MacWilliams helped lock down the run rule victory going 0.1-innings escaping Fort Scott's bases loaded situation to end the game.

Starting pitcher Aidan Sowers earned a no-decision, tossing 3.1-innings scattering three hits, three runs (one-earned), walking six and fanning two.

Bradley Feezer (4-3) notched the win out of the bullpen going 1.2-innings permitting two runs on two hits and walking one before handing off to Anthony Treto for 1.2-innings with the freshman yielding four hits, two runs with a walk and strikeout.

Hoisington 12, Russell 2 - Cardinals advance to Regional semis

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Adam Frazier hit a two-run homer in the ninth inning and the Kansas City Royals rallied for a 2-1 victory over the hapless Los Angeles Angels on Friday night.

MJ Melendez delivered a one-out single off Angels closer Carlos Estévez (0-2) before Frazier put his first homer in 31 games this season into the short porch in right field. Frazier, who got two hits to boost his average to .188, hadn't homered in 74 games since last July 30 with Baltimore.

“I've been working on a lot of different things,” Frazier said. “I probably changed ideas 10 times today, to be honest. ... The last couple of at-bats, just kind of relaxed and let the hands take over. Just tried to get the body out of the way and swing easy.”

Melendez had three hits for Kansas City, which has won three straight and seven of 10. Tyler Duffey (1-0) pitched the eighth to earn his first victory since 2022.

Jo Adell homered and Griffin Canning pitched 5 2/3 scoreless innings for the Angels, who have lost 16 of 21 after Estévez's third blown save in his last six opportunities.

Matt Thaiss got a one-out double off John Schreiber in the bottom of the ninth, but Schreiber got two grounders to wrap up his first save of the season with his new team.

Alec Marsh struck out seven while pitching one-run ball into the sixth inning in his return from injury, but the Royals were two outs away from their second shutout loss of the season before they came back. Marsh hadn’t pitched since getting hit in the elbow by a comebacker on April 25.

“We were in it the whole time,” Marsh said. “No one thought we were losing that game. ... That's what you live for right there — coming back in those games and sneaking those wins out. The bats didn't show up for the first couple of innings, but this team has got so much fight. Doesn't matter if it's the beginning of the game or the ending of the game. If we score, we're going to win.”

The Angels got a big game from Adell, who made a diving catch on Michael Massey's line drive in the top of the fifth. He hit his sixth homer of the season several minutes later, driving a 436-foot shot off the artificial rock formation beyond the center field fence at the Big A.

Canning came through with his best start in a rocky season, holding the Royals to three hits and two walks with three strikeouts.

“I don’t think the at-bats were poor,” Kansas City manager Matt Quatraro said. “You’ve got to tip your cap to Canning. Looked like the changeup was really giving us trouble. He was getting it down below the barrel, and then the balls we did square up, Adell made a great play on Massey. That's a leadoff double, maybe triple. Who knows?"

After reliever Adam Cimber escaped Canning's sixth-inning jam by striking out Massey, Matt Moore and Luis García each threw a scoreless inning before Estévez blew it.

Niko Goodrum drew a walk and stole a base in his debut with the Angels, who claimed him off waivers from Tampa Bay on Thursday.

Luis Guillorme doubled in his second game with the Angels, who have added several stopgap veterans to fill the injury holes left by Mike Trout, Anthony Rendon, Brandon Drury, Luis Rengifo and Miguel Sano.

Royals: LHP Daniel Lynch was sent back to Triple-A Omaha to make room for Marsh, who came off the 15-day injured list.

Angels: INF Ehire Adrianza went on the 10-day injured list with back spasms. The move is retroactive to Thursday.

LHP Tyler Anderson (2-4, 2.74 ERA) takes the mound for Los Angeles in the third game of the series Saturday, facing Kansas City LHP Cole Ragans (2-2, 3.38 ERA).

Points were at a premium for the Panther boys at Thursday's Western Athletic Conference Championships in Dodge City. Hays won the team title with 121 points, followed by Garden City with 86 and Dodge City with 72. Great Bend finished fifth with 35 points.

Freshman Cooper Ohnmacht did most of the damage in the jumps. Coming off a school-record triple jump of 46-5-5 -one of just two marks beyond 46 feet this spring in Kansas - Ohnmacht won the WAC title at 45-4. Hays junior Kamani Jones, a regional and likely state competitor, took the silver at 44-0. Sophomore Kellen Brown placed fourth for Great Bend at 41-1.5 to miss the bronze by eight inches, and junior Ben Nicholson finished 10th at 37-8. Ohnmacht also won the long jump title by three inches at 20-9.25. Brown placed 10th at 18-2.

The Panther 4x8 team of Braylon Moore, Diego Pasos, Tavon Stroup, and Ismael Ramirez cut 12 seconds off a season-best to win the title by three seconds in 8:25.66. Great Bend's time is the eighth-fastest in Class 5A this spring. The 4x4 team of Moore, Pasos, Pedro Enriquez, and Ramiro Rocho finished fourth in 3:39.37, four seconds behind the bronze.

Moore ran fourth in the 800m run in 2:04.08 to miss the bronze by less than a second. Ramirez placed 10th in 2:10.84, and senior Alex Galindo finished 12th in 2:14.55. Stroup ran fifth in the 3200m run in 10:30.34 to miss the bronze by 14 seconds.

Sophomore Conner Holliday led the Panther throwers with a bronze medal in the discus at 139-7, just two inches from the silver. Senior Jorge Pena placed ninth on a throw of 113-9.

Great Bend will host a Class 5A regional on Thursday, May 16. The top four finishers from each event will qualify for the state track and field championships the following week in Wichita. Field events begin at 2 p.m. with track prelims to begin at 5 p.m.

Beckham, Bullard, Kate Welcher, and Bella Long joined to bring home the 4x800m title in 10:22.81, eight seconds in front of second-place Liberal. The 4x4 squad of Bullard, Beckham, Smith, and Daizy Gomez finished second in 4:11.77, two-plus seconds behind Liberal.

Senior Sadie Spray moved her best high jump of the season up two inches at 5-4. That would have tied her for the 5A lead, but Hays junior Katie Linenberger also added two inches to her season best to win the WAC title and move into sole possession of the 5A lead. Lady Panther junior Cassie Ellegood won the bronze at 5-2.

Spray also picked up heavy points in the hurdle events. She ran second in the 300s in 48.77 to miss the gold by half a second. Spray ran just off her No. 12 time in 5A. Long finished eighth in 55.24. Lady Panthers win fourth straight WAC track and field title

Jazmine Williamson and Christopher Young of the Barton Community College track and field program have been named the U.S. Track &amp; Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Outdoor Women and Men's National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Athletes of the Week.

Williamson piled up 26 points across three events for the now nation's top ranked women's team leading the Cougars to its 33rd Region VI title and 32nd KJCCC West Division crown.

Also named the Championships' Women's Field Athlete of the Meet on Saturday, Williamson began her trek on Friday in the long jump by riding the wind-aided runway with two marks over 21-feet including launching a program 2nd best ever mark of 6.50m (21-04.50) that ranks 5th all-time on the outdoor list.

On Saturday the sophomore finished runner-up in her other two events, posting another personal best in the triple jump (11.96m, 39-03.00) before winding up in the high jump at 1.68m (5-06.00).

Earning the men's High Point Athlete of the Meet for the 5th ranked Cougars, Young piled up 36 points competing in four events across two days helping Barton to the Region VI runner-up placing.

Young began with ten points by winning the initial throwing event of the javelin with a 58.59m (192-02) mark.

Teammate Ricardo Hayles put Young in the runner-up spot of the discus as the freshman bolted four spots on the program all-time chart to 2nd all-time with a 60.83m (199-07) as Young marked a 59.93m (196-07) to remain 3rd on Barton's best list. Hayles would later be named the men's Field Athlete of the Meet joining Young's High Point award. The duo's personal best efforts land No. 7 and No. 10 on the NJCAA's all-time chart.

On Saturday Young would again earn a runner-up finish in the shot put (17.68m, 58-00.25) with Hayles coming fourth at (16.49m, 54-01.25) then concluded busy two days by winning the hammer with a season best 55.32m (181-06) effort as freshman Boris Peranovic marked a personal best 50.46m (165-06) to punch his event ticket at nationals.

Williamson's award becomes the Barton women's 11th USTFCCCA National Athlete of the Week award and the fourth this season as Cedricka Williams won the honor three times this year. ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Dairon Blanco had three hits, including a two-run homer in the third inning, Michael Wacha picked up his first win in over a month and the Kansas City Royals rolled to a 10-4 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Thursday night.

“He comes ready to play whenever he’s in the lineup, whether that’s starting or just coming off the bench,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said of Blanco, who is mostly used as a pinch runner, but has hit safely in five of his seven starts this season.

Vinnie Pasquantino also had a two-run homer in the third and drove in three runs for the Royals, who have won three of four. Pasquantino has nine RBIs in his last five games.

Maikel Garcia added three hits, including a two-run double in the sixth.

Wacha (2-4) — who went 0-4 in his previous five starts. — allowed only two hits in six innings before running into trouble in the seventh. The Angels loaded the bases as their first three hitters got aboard when Luis Guillorme and Cole Tucker drew bases-loaded walks to chase the right-hander.

“Those first six innings I felt like I was locked in, you know. Then, kind of lost it in the seventh,” said Wacha, who gave up three runs (two earned) on three hits and struck out six in six-plus innings. “I’m not going to let that affect how I feel coming out of there. The stuff was good and had a good mix.”

The Angels had runners at first and second with one out, but reliever Daniel Lynch IV made a great grab of Kevin Pillar’s grounder to start a double play and end the inning.

The Angels had five hits and are 4-12 at The Big A, the worst home start in franchise history.

Angels starter Reid Detmers (3-4) retired the first six Royals before running into trouble in the third. Hunter Renfroe drew a leadoff walk and Blanco followed by driving Detmers' slider into the left-field bullpens. Later in the inning, Pasquantino's two-run shot to right went 442 feet, the farthest he has hit in his three years in the majors.

Detmers allowed six runs and seven hits and struck out five in five innings. The left-hander has allowed at least four runs in four straight starts after giving up four runs (three earned) through his first four starts.

“Tonight, everything he landed they got to and he wasn't landing very much. Tonight wasn't his night,” manager Ron Washington said of Detmers. “When he did make a good pitch, they found a way to put it into play. We struck out 13 tonight and they still had 12 hits and put 10 runs on the board.”

Angels: Infielders Brandon Drury (left hamstring strain) and Luis Rengifo (viral infection) were placed on the 10-day injured list. The moves and Los Angeles' lineup were not announced until 8 minutes before first pitch.

Royals roll to a 10-4 victory over Angels

The Barton Community College baseball team extended its winning streak to five straight on Thursday afternoon and took a 1-0 series lead over the Fort Scott Greyhounds on Thursday afternoon in the opening series of the Region VI Baseball Tournament at Lions Field.

Starting pitcher Reece Hemmerling tossed all seven innings for his fourth complete game shutout of the season and eighth win of the year while Robby Bolin and Ayden Hadley drove in three runs each as the Cougars defeated Fort Scott 12-0 in seven-innings in Game 1.

The 10th seeded Cougars improve to 38-19 on the season as the 7th seeded Greyhounds drop to 39-18 on the year. Game 2 of the best-of-3 opening round series will continue Friday afternoon with a 1:00 p.m. first pitch from Fort Scott's Lions Field.

Scoreless over the first inning, the first of two Greyhound errors on the day broke the scoring open with Wyatt Yetter reaching on a two-base error scoring Kyler Horsman's first of three hits on the afternoon to jumpstart the second. Hadley grew Barton's advantage to 2-0 on the next pitch delivering an RBI single for the first of his two-hit afternoon.

The Cougars' lead stretched to 4-0 just three batters into the top of the third with Horsman's fourth fence clearer of the season trotting home Owen Clyne's one-out single.

Cole Schieffer's lone hit to leadoff the fourth led to another Barton insurance run scoring on Bolin's groundout for a 5-0 lead.

— Mike Trout decided that having surgery to repair a torn meniscus
in his left knee was a better alternative than postponing surgery and
being a designated hitter the rest of the season. The Los Angeles
Angels slugger said before Thursday's game that being a DH was an
alternative option presented, but that he didn't think it was worth
it. Trout is sidelined with a major injury for the fourth straight
season. He still doesn’t know when the latest one occurred. The
knee soreness worsened during an April 29 game against the
Philadelphia Phillies and an MRI exam the next day revealed the tear.
He underwent surgery last Friday when the Angels began a six-game
road trip.

MILWAUKEE (AP) —
Rhys Hoskins, Jake Bauers and Joey Ortiz all homered to cool off
Sonny Gray as the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the slumping St. Louis
Cardinals 7-1. The Cardinals suffered their fifth straight loss as
they opened a four-game series with the NL Central-leading Brewers.
William Contreras and Christian Yelich each went 3 of 4 for the
Brewers. Milwaukee scored six runs off Gray during his five-inning
stint. Gray entered the game with an 0.89 ERA through five starts.

UNDATED (AP) — The
NCAA has approved a waiver that will allow men’s and women’s
basketball programs to pay for unlimited official recruiting visits
to help teams deals with roster depletion caused by transfers,
according to a memo obtained by The Associated Press. The Athletic
first reported the approval of a blanket waiver by the men’s and
women’s basketball oversight committees. Currently, men’s
basketball programs are allowed 28 official visits over a rolling
two-year period. The number for women’s programs is 24. The waiver
is effective immediately and the NCAA Division I Council will
consider eliminating the cap on official visits in basketball
permanently in June.

Donovan Mitchell scored 29 points and Evan Mobley had 21 points and
10 rebounds to help the Cleveland Cavaliers beat the top-seeded
Boston Celtics 118-94 and tie their second-round playoff series at
one game apiece. Two nights after losing by 25, the Cavaliers seized
the lead in the third quarter and answered with a blowout of their
own. Mitchell scored 16 in the third. Jayson Tatum scored 25 for

Artemi Panarin redirected a pass between his legs at the crease to
beat Pyotr Kochetkov just 1:43 into overtime and the New York Rangers
beat the Carolina Hurricanes 3-2 on Thursday night to take a 3-0 lead
in the second-round playoff series. Panarin scored after Carolina
defenseman Dmitry Orlov lost control of a puck in the corner in the
defensive zone. Vincent Trocheck collected it on the right side and
sent it toward the crease to Panarin, who tipped the puck behind him
as defenseman Jalen Chatfield tried to push him away from the crease.
The puck slipped under the right elbow and past the ribs of
Kochetkov. The Rangers can complete the sweep in Game 4 here Saturday
night.

The Indiana Pacers have, as coach Rick Carlisle said they would, sent
78 plays they believe were officiated incorrectly from the first two
games of their series against the New York Knicks to the NBA office
for review, a person with knowledge of the action said Thursday. The
person spoke on condition of anonymity to The Associated Press
because neither the Pacers nor the league had publicly confirmed the
clips were actually sent. Officials acknowledged an incorrectly
called kicked ball violation late in Game 1, but the Pacers believed
there were plenty other instances of wrong whistles.

PHOENIX (AP) — The
Phoenix Suns have fired coach Frank Vogel after one disappointing
season. The team made the announcement on Thursday, less than two
weeks after getting swept out of the first round of the NBA playoffs
by the Minnesota Timberwolves. The Suns finished the regular season
with a 49-33 record. Vogel won a championship with the Los Angeles
Lakers in 2020. Vogel was hired last summer to lead the Suns’
All-Star trio of Kevin Durant, Devin Booker and Bradley Beal, but the
group was never quite able to gel.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP)
— Rory McIlroy hoped that his victory with Shane Lowry two weeks
ago in the Zurich Classic team event would serve as a springboard for
the remainder of the season. He’s off to a good start. McIlroy
positioned himself for a run at a record fourth Wells Fargo
Championship title Thursday, opening with a 4-under 67 that left him
three shots behind leader Xander Schauffele. Collin Morikawa and Alex
Noren also shot 67, and Justin Thomas topped the group at 68. Quail
Hollow is one of McIlroy’s favorite courses, and with good reason
after victories in 2010, ‘15 and ’21.

UNDATED (AP) —
Tiger Woods has company in player negotiations with the Saudi-backers
of LIV Golf. Rory McIlroy says he and Adam Scott also are on the
transactional subcommittee of the PGA Tour Enterprises board. It was
yet another twist in the bizarre governance being played among as the
PGA Tour tries to work out a deal with the Public Investment Fund of
Saudi Arabia. The tour disclosed only five people on the
subcommittee. Its latest release shows McIlroy and Scott part of the
group. McIlroy says he's already been involved in discussions. He
says he has no vote, only a voice.

Pasquantino has nine RBIs in his last five games. Maikel Garcia added
three hits, including a two-run double in the sixth. The Angels had
five hits and are 4-12 at The Big A for the worst home start in

— Mike Trout decided that having surgery to repair a torn meniscus
in his left knee was a better alternative than postponing surgery and
being a designated hitter the rest of the season. The Los Angeles
Angels slugger said before Thursday's game that being a DH was an
alternative option presented, but that he didn't think it was worth
it. Trout is sidelined with a major injury for the fourth straight
season. He still doesn’t know when the latest one occurred. The
knee soreness worsened during an April 29 game against the
Philadelphia Phillies and an MRI exam the next day revealed the tear.
He underwent surgery last Friday when the Angels began a six-game
road trip.MILWAUKEE (AP) —
Rhys Hoskins, Jake Bauers and Joey Ortiz all homered to cool off
Sonny Gray as the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the slumping St. Louis
Cardinals 7-1. The Cardinals suffered their fifth straight loss as
they opened a four-game series with the NL Central-leading Brewers.
William Contreras and Christian Yelich each went 3 of 4 for the
Brewers. Milwaukee scored six runs off Gray during his five-inning
stint. Gray entered the game with an 0.89 ERA through five starts.UNDATED (AP) — The
NCAA has approved a waiver that will allow men’s and women’s
basketball programs to pay for unlimited official recruiting visits
to help teams deals with roster depletion caused by transfers,
according to a memo obtained by The Associated Press. The Athletic
first reported the approval of a blanket waiver by the men’s and
women’s basketball oversight committees. Currently, men’s
basketball programs are allowed 28 official visits over a rolling
two-year period. The number for women’s programs is 24. The waiver
is effective immediately and the NCAA Division I Council will
consider eliminating the cap on official visits in basketball
permanently in June.BOSTON (AP) —
Donovan Mitchell scored 29 points and Evan Mobley had 21 points and
10 rebounds to help the Cleveland Cavaliers beat the top-seeded
Boston Celtics 118-94 and tie their second-round playoff series at

The agonizing week of playing the waiting game came to rest Tuesday afternoon as the Barton Community College women's golf team received news from the NJCAA of receiving an at-large bid for the 2024 Division I Championships.

Placing third behind 7th ranked Dodge City Community College and 9th ranked Iowa Western Community College last week at the Region VI/Plains District Championship, Barton's fate was left up to a national committee.

Moving up four spots in the latest national poll, the now 10th ranked Cougars were chosen as a recipient of the five at-large bids based on district finish and rankings to join ten other teams and fifteen individual entries May 19-24 in Melbourne, Florida, at the Duran Golf Club.

Continuing their streak and now making their 13th team national tournament appearance, prior to the announcement Barton's lone representative was&nbsp;Butpapaporn Sukterm&nbsp;as the freshman placed District runner-up of the 57-competitor field and placed first of the Region VI competitors to earn the 2024 Champion title.

Final KABC High School Baseball Rankings (5/9/24)

The 4th ranked Barton Community College women's track and field team got off to a great start to the 2024 Region VI Championships winning the first of seven events to capture both the KJCCC and Region title Saturday at Pratt's Track Complex.

Overall Barton had 25 scoring performances across the three-day event powered by 17 personal and/or season bests while adding four new national qualifying performances.

Of the scoring, Barton's small but mighty squad racked up 21 of their results within the top four placings finishing with 168 total points for an eight point gap ahead of 5th ranked Cloud County and 79.5 points more than third place Hutchinson.

Producing the program's second straight and 33rd Region outdoor title, conference scoring also put the Cougars on top for their first KJCCC West Division crown since 2019 and 32nd overall.

The momentum now shifts to the season's final event held May 16-18 in West Monroe, Louisiana, as the Cougars look to add to its indoor national title at the NJCAA's Outdoor Championships.

Ana Couto provided the initial spark winning the heptathlon by over 1200 points than the nearest competitor. Posting the program's seventh most accumulated points last year as a freshman, Couto's continued comeback from an earlier minor injury produced 4982 accumulated points for what would be the 9th most in program history. The sophomore won four of the seven events while finishing second in the others behind a trio of personal or season best efforts including a national qualifying performance in the 100m hurdles.

As Couto wrapped up her title on day two, the Cougars later in the day began their 54 point assault in the field events by winning all three amongst seven scoring performances in the top four.

The Championship's Women's Field Athlete of the Meet Jazmine Williamson piled up 26 points across three events, winning Friday's long jump on a personal best 6.50m (21-04.50) for a program 2nd best ever mark. On Saturday the sophomore finished runner-up in her other two events, posting another personal best in the triple jump (11.96m, 39-03.00) before winding up in the high jump at 1.68m (5-06.00).

Joining Williamson as a post-event award winner, Treneese Hamilton earned sixteen of her Championship leading 29 points on Friday by winning the javelin with a personal best 45.18m (148-02) throw on the way to earning the High Point Female Athlete of the Meet. Hamilton followed with a third place in discus (41.07m, 134-09) then on Saturday won the shot put (14.41m, 47-03.50) before concluding with an eighth place in the hammer throw (42.65m, 139-11).

Joining Williamson and Hamilton with post-event honors was Emmanuel Dixon in not only being named the women's but additionally the men's Assistant Coach of the Year.

Two of Barton's region title winners came on the track with both occurring in the hurdles. Kialia Claiborne circled the oval in the 400m hurdles clocking a winning 1:03.64 time, Kay-Lagay Clarke set a personal best in the 100m hurdles at 13.84, with Widlife Vermilus giving the Cougars an additional three points on a 15.20 sixth place clocking after recording a personal best 15.13 time a day before in the prelims.

 </figure>By TODD MOORE Barton Sports InfoThe 4th ranked Barton Community College women's track and field team got off to a great start to the 2024 Region VI Championships winning the first of seven events to capture both the KJCCC and Region title Saturday at Pratt's Track Complex.Overall Barton had 25 scoring performances across the three-day event powered by 17 personal and/or season bests while adding four new national qualifying performances.Of the scoring, Barton's small but mighty squad racked up 21 of their results within the top four placings finishing with 168 total points for an eight point gap ahead of 5th ranked Cloud County and 79.5 points more than third place Hutchinson.Producing the program's second straight and 33rd Region outdoor title, conference scoring also put the Cougars on top for their first KJCCC West Division crown since 2019 and 32nd overall.The momentum now shifts to the season's final event held May 16-18 in West Monroe, Louisiana, as the Cougars look to add to its indoor national title at the NJCAA's Outdoor Championships.Ana Couto provided the initial spark winning the heptathlon by over 1200 points than the nearest competitor. Posting the program's seventh most accumulated points last year as a freshman, Couto's continued comeback from an earlier minor injury produced 4982 accumulated points for what would be the 9th most in program history. The sophomore won four of the seven events while finishing second in the others behind a trio of personal or season best efforts including a national qualifying performance in the 100m hurdles.As Couto wrapped up her title on day two, the Cougars later in the day began their 54 point assault in the field events by winning all three amongst seven scoring performances in the top four.The Championship's Women's Field Athlete of the Meet Jazmine Williamson piled up 26 points across three events, winning Friday's long jump on a personal best 6.50m (21-04.50) for a program 2nd best ever mark. On Saturday the sophomore finished runner-up in her other two events, posting another personal best in the triple jump (11.96m, 39-03.00) before winding up in the high jump at 1.68m (5-06.00).Joining Williamson as a post-event award winner, Treneese Hamilton earned sixteen of her Championship leading 29 points on Friday by winning the javelin with a personal best 45.18m (148-02) throw on the way to earning the High Point Female Athlete of the Meet. Hamilton followed with a third place in discus (41.07m, 134-09) then on Saturday won the shot put (14.41m, 47-03.50) before concluding with an eighth place in the hammer throw (42.65m, 139-11).Joining Williamson and Hamilton with post-event honors was Emmanuel Dixon in not only being named the women's but additionally the men's Assistant Coach of the Year.Two of Barton's region title winners came on the track with both occurring in the hurdles. Barton women capture second straight Region VI Outdoor title

The Barton Community College's bid for a second straight outdoor reginal title fell four points short on Saturday at Pratt's Track Complex as the 7th ranked Cougars finished runner-up at the 2024 KJCCC/Region VI Outdoor Championships.

Barton posted 21 scoring performances in their two-days of competition with 11 personal and/or season bests while adding a trio of new national qualifying performances.

Winning four individual titles, the Cougars finished runner-up in five other events. Missing a few points here and there including a walk-off during a race, Barton was left with 127 total points falling behind 8th ranked Cloud County's victorious 131 points but nearly twenty points ahead of third place Hutchinson.

Focus now turns to the season's final event held May 16-18 in West Monroe, Louisiana, as the Cougars compete at the NJCAA's Outdoor Championships.

A trio of Cougars earned post-event honors led by Emmanuel Dixon in not only being named the men's but additionally the women's Assistant Coach of the Year.

Ricardo Hayles' first event made a strong statement towards being named the Men's Field Athlete of the Meet by winning the discus on a 60.83m (199-07) throw. The mark bolted the freshman up four spots on the program all-time chart to second furthest and No. 7 on the NJCAA all-time performance list.

Earning the men's High Point Athlete of the Meet, Christopher Young won the initial throwing event of the javelin with a 58.59m (192-02) then finished runner-up behind Hayles by three feet at 59.93m (196-07) to remain in the third spot of the program best chart. On Saturday Young would again earn a runner-up finish in the shot put (17.68m, 58-00.25) with Hayles coming fourth at (16.49m, 54-01.25). Young concluded his Championship leading 36 points by winning the hammer throw (55.32m, 181-06) as freshman Boris Peranovic marked a personal best 50.46m (165-06) to punch his event ticket at nationals.

Just like on the women's side, the Cougars' Jeramiah Martin gave Barton a short track hurdle sweep by winning the men's 110m variety with a 13.96 clocking. Bryce Southerland also recorded a personal best 14.16 in prelims of the event clocking a slightly slower 14.22 for 4th place.

One of Barton's five runner-up finishes was earned by the 4x800m relay team in its first competition of the season. The tandem of Hamza Belkhalfi, Corlando Chambers, Jasiah Clapp, and Adrian Nethersole passed the baton to a 7:43.80 clocking for the 9th fastest time in program history punching their national meet entry in the process.
