Panther bowling teams open 2025 season with wins at Liberal

Many of the best wrestling teams and individual wrestlers converged on Dodge City Friday and Saturday. The top three teams were separated by a single point with Class 3-2-1A's Hoxie and Class 6A's Manhattan both scoring 221 points. Goddard, the No. 1 team in Class 5A, finished second with 220 points. Eighth-ranked Great Bend scored 96.5 points to finish 10th in spite of some unfortunate circumstances.

Junior Triston Tomlinson was impressive in pool matches with a 7-0 record and five wins by fall. Ranked No. 5 at 138 pounds, he lost an 11-5 battle to Ulysses' Sebastian Heredia, ranked No. 6 in 4A, in the semifinals. Tomlinson rebounded to beat fifth-ranked Wesley Gill of Blue Valley (6A) 8-1 in the consolation finals for third.

Junior Trenton Kern finished fourth at 215 pounds after forfeiting his final two matches. Kern, ranked No. 6, returned from an injury to pin his Pratt opponent in dual action Thursday. He was 5-0 with five pins in Dodge City before forfeiting his final three matches. Top-ranked Preston Hagel of Goddard was leading Kern before the forfeit and went on to win the bracket.

Freshman Cal Schartz, ranked No. 2 at 113 pounds, finished fifth in that bracket. Schartz went 3-2 in pool matches with a pair of tech falls and a 54-second pin. He lost a 5-2 decision against Newton's Wade Stubbs and lost in sudden victory to fourth-ranked Cruz Cannon of Hutchinson. Schartz closed out the tournament with a tech fall and 9-6 decision against Tonganoxie to secure fifth.

Hayden Kelly was another fifth-place finisher at 150 pounds. He finished pool matches at 4-2 with three wins by fall and a loss to top-ranked Logan Lagerman of Manhattan (6A). He also lost a 6-5 battle to Tonganoxie. Kelly was able to win decisions over Ulysses and Newton in bracket competition to come away with fifth place.

Trevin Maciel finished sixth at 144 pounds.  He finished pool action at 4-3 with four pins and a pair of losses against ranked 6A wrestlers. In bracket action, Maciel tech-falled No. 6 Giovanny Gomez of Hoxie (3-2-1A) before losing another match to No. 5 Taggart Murphy of Olathe North (6A).

Blake Stein strung together a nice day at 157 pounds for eighth place. He won his first three matches and finished pool action at 4-3 with losses against the No. 1 wrestler in 4A and the No. 4 wrestler in 6A. The tough day continued in the brackets as Stein went the distance in a 10-2 loss to No. 2 Max Harris of Hutchinson. Stein was defeated for a second time by Newton's Kane Wise in the seventh-place match. Top-ranked Jacob Goodwin of Goddard won the bracket.

Brady Mendez finished ninth at 190 pounds. Mendez was 2-1 with a pair of pins before running into top-ranked Samuel Watkins of Hoxie. Mendez finished pool action at 2-3 and pinned his Blue Valley opponent to reach the ninth-place match where he won by injury default. Watkins went on to win the bracket.

Ryder Morris was another ninth-place finisher at 285 pounds. He went 1-3 in pool matches that included a loss to the No. 5 wrestler in Class 6A. Morris finished his day with a bye and medical forfeit in bracket action to secure ninth. Josue Bustamonte was wrestling unattached and was sitting a 2-1 before an injury ended his day early.

Braxton Richter lost nine matches at 120 pounds to finish 20th. Hoxie's top-ranked junior Ian Giancola defeated Lou Elsten of Lawrence, ranked No. 2 in 6A, in the finals.

Some of the medals from the Paris Olympics seem to be quickly losing their shine.

The French mint told The Associated Press on Tuesday that it is replacing a number of medals from the 2024 Paris Games and Paralympics after athletes complained that they have already deteriorated — with some posting pictures on social media.

The Monnaie de Paris declined to say how many medals have been returned, but French website La Lettre put the number at over 100. Contacted by the AP, the French Olympic committee and the IOC also would not reveal figures.

In total, the French mint&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/video/see-why-the-paris-olympics-medals-are-so-special-0000018d88f5d347a7fdaaf7686b0000">produced 5,084 medals</a>&nbsp;for the Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games.

“The Monnaie de Paris has taken the issue of damaged medals very seriously since the first exchange requests in August, and has mobilized its internal teams,” the French mint said. “Since then, the company has modified and optimized its relative varnishing process. The Monnaie de Paris will replace all damaged medals at the athletes’ request during the first quarter of 2025.”

Parisian jewelry house&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/paris-olympic-medals-eiffel-tower-333c751b65c7a2a70520b2d23f85692e">Chaumet designed the medals</a>, which were part of the Games’ lasting legacy. A hexagonal, polished chunk of iron taken from the iconic Eiffel Tower was embedded in each gold, silver and bronze medal.

But concerns about their quality emerged before the Games had even ended last summer when American skateboarder Nyjah Huston posted a video showing how quickly his bronze medal had deteriorated. Many other athletes have since also complained. French swimmers Yohann Ndoye-Brouard and Clément Secchi recently posted images of their medals on social media, describing them as looking like “crocodile skin,” or dating back to 1924.

The IOC told the AP that Paris organizers are in contact with the national Olympic committees of the athletes concerned. It confirmed that the replacement process will start in the coming weeks, and that the French mint is working with Paris organizers to understand the circumstances and cause of any damage.

“Damaged medals will be systematically replaced by the Monnaie de Paris and engraved in an identical way to the originals,” the IOC said.

The iron pieces embedded in the center of the Olympic medals each weigh 18 grams (about two-thirds of an ounce).

They were cut from girders and other bits that were swapped out of the Eiffel Tower during renovations and stored for safekeeping, according to Joachim Roncin, head of design at the Paris Games organizing committee.

2024-25 NJCAA DI Men's Basketball Poll | Week 7

DENVER (AP) — The&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/broncos-season-wrapup-nix-payton-b2593dd576936f77873176ae24350c97">Denver Broncos</a>&nbsp;and the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/chargers-season-wrapup-harbaugh-1efa14152cb290aec5b399b5643065ca">Los Angeles Chargers</a>&nbsp;felt good about their chances heading into the playoffs in large part because they had played the reigning&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kansas-city-chiefs-nfl-playoffs-6f7dbffff1f69e7b31277850fa6626b3">two-time Super Bowl</a>&nbsp;champion Kansas City Chiefs so tough this season.

Their wipeouts in the wild-card round show they're not as close to overtaking the Chiefs as they may have thought.

The Broncos (10-8) would have swept Kansas City (15-2) were it not for a blocked field goal as time expired in Week 10 that preserved the Chiefs' 16-14 escape at Arrowhead, and Denver ended its eight-year playoff drought with a 38-0 shutout of K.C.'s backups in Week 18.

If not for that fluke failure from his field goal protection unit, Sean Payton would be 3-1 against Kansas City since becoming Broncos head coach, and Jim Harbaugh was really close to going 2-0 against Andy Reid this season.

The Chargers (11-7) lost by two and seven points to K.C., which won its ninth consecutive AFC West crown in its quest for an unprecedented three-peat as Super Bowl champs.

The&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/texans-chargers-score-5a108d64ad9775007e5b4baade32bcf8">Chargers face-planted 32-12 at Houston</a>&nbsp;on Saturday after taking a 6-0 lead into the second quarter, and the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/broncos-bills-playoffs-score-0519472b100dbacf96e8204dba436ffb">Broncos were blown out 31-7 at Buffalo</a>&nbsp;after grabbing a 7-0 lead just five snaps into the game.

The remaining teams — Baltimore, Buffalo and Houston — in the AFC field all could pose stiff challenges to the Chiefs. But Patrick Mahomes is 15-3 in the playoffs, has won his last seven postseason starts and is 4-0 against the AFC quarterbacks remaining in the playoffs.

Josh Allen is 0-3 against Mahomes in the playoffs and 6-2 against everybody else. Lamar Jackson is 0-1 against Mahomes and 3-3 against others, and Stroud is 2-1 and will face Mahomes for the first time in the postseason Saturday, when Mahomes and several other starters will be coming off a whopping 24 days' rest.

The Ravens and Bills meet in the other divisional round game while the Chargers and Broncos both look toward next season and ponder the painful lessons learned from their early exits.

Though not nearly as strong as the NFC North, which produced the 15-2 Lions, 14-3 Vikings and 11-6 Packers, all playoff teams, the AFC West sent three teams to the postseason for the first time since 2013.

“One of the things we learned early on is we got to find a way to play these games at home,” coach Sean Payton said.

That would mean upending the Chiefs, who have owned the division ever since Peyton Manning retired in 2016 and have averaged almost 13 wins a season since Mahomes became their starter in 2018.

So, how close are the Broncos to knocking the Chiefs from their pedestal? Several players who were cleaning out their lockers Monday said they felt they were close, although one thought it was a gotcha question.

“I mean, if you look at us, we were in all those games, every single one of them,” left tackle Garett Bolles said of the Broncos' 3-3 divisional record that included a sweep of Las Vegas and a pair of seven-point losses to the Chargers. “None of them were blowouts. We're right there. I think that we need to get some more playmakers but everything we have in this locker room, the core value, is here.

“The sky's the limit for us and I think we're going to be exactly where we want to be.”

Asked how close he felt the Broncos were to catching the Chiefs, right guard Quinn Meinerz, fresh off his first All-Pro season, was having none of it.

“You're already assuming the Chiefs,” he retorted.

Well, they have won nine consecutive division titles, second most ever behind the New England Patriots' 11-year dominance of the AFC East from 2009-19 under Tom Brady and Bill Belichick.

“We're not even on to the next season yet,” Meinerz interjected. “I mean, I can't predict any of that. We just got done playing in the playoffs. I think that's kind of a, kind of baiting question to ask, to be honest."

“This is all speculation and I'm not here to speculate,” Meinerz said. “I'm here to talk about what we just accomplished and not necessarily speculate on the future.”

Blowouts show the Broncos, Chargers aren't so close to the Chiefs

DALLAS (AP) — Mike McCarthy will not return as coach of the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/dallas-cowboys">Dallas Cowboys</a>, who are going on three decades since their last Super Bowl title, owner Jerry Jones said Monday.

Jones said the organization and McCarthy mutually agreed to part ways. A search for the team's next coach begins immediately, he said.

“I have great respect for Mike, and he has led the team through some very unique and challenging times during his tenure,” Jones said in a statement.

McCarthy’s contract expired on Jan. 8 following a 7-10 season. Dallas was 12-5 each of the three years before that under him, but still hasn’t been past the divisional round of the NFC playoffs since its last Super Bowl at the end of the 1995 season.

University of Colorado coach Deion Sanders — who played on the last Super Bowl-winning Cowboys team — has a good relationship with Jones and could emerge as a coaching candidate. The two have discussed the job, according to a person with knowledge of the conversation. The person, speaking on condition of anonymity because a formal interview hasn’t been arranged, said the team was still in the process of gathering candidates.

The Cowboys had an exclusive negotiating window with McCarthy through Tuesday, but the parties decided to split ahead of the deadline.

At least one NFL team asked during that time about talking to the 61-year-old coach, who won a Super Bowl with Green Bay.

Next season will be the 30th for the Cowboys since winning the last of their five Super Bowl titles.

Before taking the Dallas job after a full season out of coaching, McCarthy was with the Packers for 13 seasons and had a 125-77-2 record from 2006-18. He was 10-8 in the playoffs and led Green Bay to a Super Bowl title at AT&amp;T Stadium, the home of the Cowboys, 14 years ago.

There were also three other NFC championship games for McCarthy in Green Bay, and that is what Jones envisioned — and more — when he hired the coach in 2020 after Jason Garrett never got that far in his 10 years.

McCarthy finished with a 50-38 record in Dallas, including a 1-3 mark in the playoffs. That included last season, when the Cowboys were NFC East champions and had won 16 consecutive home games before trailing by 32 points in the fourth quarter of a 48-32 wild-card loss to the seventh-seeded Packers.

Dallas played the final nine games this season&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/cowboys-dak-prescott-hamstring-injury-9cfef226fdbb0f1d735d0ace6734f144">without franchise quarterback Dak Prescott</a>&nbsp;because of a torn hamstring. Top receiver CeeDee Lamb, seven-time Pro Bowl guard Zack Martin, cornerback Trevon Diggs and rushing defending DeMarcus Lawrence also finished the season on injured reserve.

Garrett had the franchise’s second-longest coaching tenure. Hall of Fame coach Tom Landry was the coach for the Cowboys’ first 29 seasons, the same number of seasons they have now gone since winning a Super Bowl. Jones fired two-time Super Bowl winner Landry when he bought the Cowboys before the 1989 season.

Only 12 NFL coaches have more career regular-season wins than McCarthy’s 174, which is still far behind Don Shula’s record 328. The only active coaches with more wins than McCarthy are Andy Reid (302 in 29 seasons) and Mike Tomlin (183 in 18 seasons).

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — Josh Allen threw two touchdown passes,&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/BuffaloBills/status/1878512854384435499" target="_blank">James Cook scored on a 5-yard run</a>&nbsp;and finished with 120 yards rushing, and the Buffalo Bills leaned on a balanced offensive attack in a 31-7 win over the Denver Broncos in a wild-card playoff game on Sunday.

The Bills methodically wore down the Broncos by scoring on six of their first seven drives in building a 31-7 lead in a game where they finished with a 23-minute edge in time of possession.

And Buffalo didn’t flinch after rookie Bo Nix capped Denver’s five-play game-opening drive with a 43-yard touchdown pass to Troy Franklin.

With Buffalo leading 13-7,&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/NFL/status/1878533116509446443" target="_blank">Allen broke the game open with a 24-yard touchdown</a>&nbsp;pass to sliding running back Ty Johnson in the back of the end zone on fourth-and-1 with 3:06 left in the third quarter.

“I’ve been saying it all year long that Ty Johnson’s the best third down back in football,” Allen said. “The things that he’s able to do for us, the way we communicate, him in the pass game, blocking and running the ball. He does it all. I’m so happy for him, so proud of him. He made a heck of a play. It was fourth down, no point in holding it and taking a sack there. They played man (coverage) and I just gave him a chance.”

On Buffalo’s next possession, Allen completed a 55-yard pass to Curtis Samuel on the first snap of the fourth quarter.

The five-time defending AFC East champion Bills advanced to the divisional round for a fifth straight postseason, and will face the third-seeded Baltimore Ravens next weekend.

The Ravens, coming off a 28-14 win over Pittsburgh on Saturday, routed Buffalo 35-10 at Baltimore in Week 4 this season. The outing will mark the second playoff meeting between Allen and Baltimore quarterback Lamar Jackson after Buffalo defeated the Ravens 17-3 in the 2020 divisional round.

“Well, they got after us earlier this year,” Allen said of facing the Ravens again. “So we’ve got a lot of film to watch. It’s a great team. It’s a great quarterback, obviously with Lamar and what he’s able to do. He’s one of the most dynamic, if not the most dynamic, quarterback in the league. He’s so fun to watch. But I’ll be watching their defense this week, so that’s our focus.”

Cook became Buffalo’s first player to top 100 yards rushing in a playoff game since Hall of Famer Thurman Thomas had 158 yards rushing in a 1995 wild-card playoff win over Miami.

Allen finished 20 of 26 for 272 yards and increased his playoff total to 23 passing touchdowns, breaking the franchise record of 21 held by Hall of Famer Jim Kelly.

The seventh-seeded Broncos were outclassed in their first playoff appearance since their Super Bowl-winning season in 2015.

Nix finished 13 of 22 for 144 yards in an outing where Denver punted four times and turned the ball over on downs twice.

And the Broncos attacking defense was kept at bay by an Allen-led attack that was more than content in gaining small chunks of yards on lengthy time-consuming drives.

The Broncos, who had an NFL-leading 63 sacks this seasons, sacked Allen just twice in an game where the Bills punted once.

Allen had what appeared to be the thumbnail on his throwing hand peeled back in the fourth quarter. He stayed the game to complete the drive, ending with Tyler Bass hitting a 34-yard field goal before giving way to backup Mitchell Trubisky.

“Oh, it’s good. I’ve just got a little blood there. It’s fine. We’re fine,” Allen said of his thumb.

Trailing 7-3, Cook scored the go-ahead touchdown 2:03 into the second quarter to cap a 13-play, 81-yard drive. All three of Buffalo’s first-half possessions featured 11 or more offensive snaps.

The Broncos had little response in a first half that ended with Denver trailing 10-7 after Wil Lutz banked a 50-yard field-goal attempt off the right upright as time expired. The miss was Lutz’s first since Week 10 when his 35-yard attempt was blocked by the Chiefs to preserve Kansas City’s 16-14 win.

Lutz had since converted 41 consecutive attempts — 13 field goal and 28 extra points.

Including the playoffs, Buffalo improved to 13-1 at home since a 24-22 loss to Denver on Nov. 13, 2023. The only loss came to Kansas City in the last year’s division playoff round. Buffalo is 16-5 all time at home in the postseason.

The Broncos dropped to 2-7 in the wild-card round, with all seven losses on the road.

The shorthanded Barton Community College wrestling team left the NJCAA Coaches Duals empty handed over the two-day event held inside the Student Activity Center in Miami, Oklahoma.

Open at two weight classes throughout the course of the event, the Cougars would drop all six matches with four of the losses coming to nationally ranked opponents, falling to No. 4 Iowa Central Community College (48-0), Big Bend Community College (29-25), No. 15 Northeastern Oklahoma A&amp;M (53-0), No. 21 Northeastern Junior College (29-24), No. 13 Labette Community College (40-15) and Cowley College (50-6).

Four Cougars produce multiple victories at the NJCAA Coaches Duals

The Lady Panther wrestling team may be able to avoid the likes of top-ranked Dodge City at state this year but there was no avoiding the Demons Saturday in Dodge City. The hosts scored 232.5 points to dominate the field. Liberal finished second with 148 points. Great Bend scored 92 points for eighth.

Second-ranked Camdyn Post finished third in a tough 105-pound bracket. She went 2-0 in pool matches with a pair of quick pins and pinned Colby's Aspen Sharpe in the consolation finals. The No. 1 wrestlers from Class 5A and 6A battled it out in the title match with Dodge City's Elizabeth Ramirez pinning Newton's Brookelyn Treaster. 

Kayle Baldwin made it to the championship rounds at 115 pounds where she finished third. Baldwin posted a 3-0 record in pool matches with a pair of pins. She lost matches to two championship-round wrestlers, including second-ranked Avery Hinojos of Newton, who won the bracket.

Sophia Bauer went 3-1 in pool matches with three wins by fall. Her one loss came against the eventual winner from Manhattan. In the consolation finals, Bauer was pinned by her Colby opponent to finish fourth.

Third-ranked Kirra Stevens placed fifth in a loaded 170-pound bracket. She pinned her first two opponents before getting pinned by sixth-ranked Alaina Fabrizius of Colby. Oakley's Atavia Cain, ranked No. 2 all-class, moved to 22-0 with a title.

Keira Leyva placed fifth at 110 pounds. She pinned her first two opponents before getting pinned by fifth-ranked Cadence Koch of Oakley.

Brooklynn Kelly saw one of the state's best en route to a fifth-place finish at 130 pounds. Kelly pinned her first opponent before going the distance in a 12-0 loss to Pratt's Wendy Candia, ranked No. 1 all-class in Kansas this spring. Kelly closed out pool matches with a 23-second win. Candia remains unbeaten with three pins in the championship rounds.

Micah Ellegood placed sixth in a tough 125-pound bracket that included another Pratt wrestler. She was sitting at 2-0 with a decision and quick pin before getting pinned by unbeaten Gracelynn Hembree of Pratt. Hembree, ranked No. 3 in 4A, went on to beat Hoxie's third-ranked Josie Bell in the finals.

Shatarah Newton was another sixth-place finisher at 145 pounds. Newton went 2-2 in pool matches with a 15-second pin and losses to ranked wrestlers from Dodge City and Manhattan. She was pinned by a different Manhattan wrestler in the fifth-place match.

Riata Stryker went 0-3 in contested pool matches at 140 pounds. She was pinned by her Hutchinson opponent in the seventh-place match.

Down by thirteen and little offensive production, the Barton Community College basketball team turned defensive in Saturday's comeback for a 54-49 overtime victory at Colby Community College.

Shooting just 13% and facing the thirteen point halftime deficit, Barton turned up the defense coming out the locker room to shut out the Trojans 12-0 in the third frame crawling to within one.

Grabbing their first lead on&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2024-25/bios/delisle_charolette_io5m">Charolette Delisle</a>'s long jumper to open fourth quarter scoring, the Cougars would eventually find themselves facing another big deficit of five with just seventy seconds remaining.

<a target="_blank" href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2024-25/bios/donanu_regina_yoh6">Regina Donanu</a>'s three-point play with 55 seconds left cut the deficit with&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2024-25/bios/onugha_vivian_7u24">Vivian Onugha</a>'s steal on the next possession giving Barton a chance to tie or go ahead. Working the ball inside, Onugha's jumper tied it up but the sophomore's bonus charity toss from a foul rimmed out keeping the score tied at 44. The Cougars produced another defensive stop resulting in a pair of chances to win it but those too missed its mark.

Going to overtime for the first time of the series' 81st meeting, Onugha put up eight of the Cougars' points but needed one more defensive stop in the final 34 seconds.&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2024-25/bios/simpson_brittany_jg44">Brittany Simpson</a>&nbsp;stepped up to provide the play, blocking Colby's attempted tying three-pointer with eight seconds remaining then securing the loose ball resulting in her pair of free throws sealing Barton's 9th straight victory of the series.

Barton's first road win of the season improves to 3-7 in league play and 7-9 overall while Colby slips to 5-6 in KJCCC and 10-7 on the season.

Next up is a two-game homestand beginning on Wednesday hosting Independence Community College followed by Saturday's contest against Coffeyville Community College. Tip off time slated for 5:30 p.m. for each with the men's matchups to follow.

Onugha's 13th double-double of the season was compiled on a game high 19 points and 23 rebounds, 11 rebounds on the offensive end in following her program record 26 rebounds last time on the court to eclipse 20-plus boards for the sixth time of the season.

Donanu poured in 13 of her 15 points after halftime with&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2024-25/bios/hall_keyona_qz08">Keyona Hall</a>&nbsp;and Delisle finishing with 7 points each as Simpson added six points.

The Cougars controlled the boards, collecting 17 offensive rebounds and finishing with a plus-12 edge on the glass while committing just 16 turnovers in matching its season best ball control.
