KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Sean McNeil scored 21 points, Malik Curry added 17 points and No. 9 seed West Virginia beat eighth-seeded Kansas State 73-67 on Wednesday night in the opener of the Big 12 Conference tournament.

West Virginia (16-16) advances to play top-seeded Kansas on Thursday. The Mountaineers lost at Kansas 85-59 in January and again at home 71-58 about a month later.

Neither team led by more than nine points in this one.

McNeil scored four points during a 10-2 run that gave West Virginia a 69-60 lead with 3:29 left. Curry and Taz Sherman made 3-pointers on consecutive possessions during the run.

Kansas State only made two of its final 10 field goals. West Virginia shot 52.8% for the game.

McNeil reached 20-plus points for the third time this season, going 7 of 10 from the field against the Wildcats. The Mountaineers won their second straight game following a seven-game losing streak.

Nijel Pack led Kansas State (14-17) with 18 points. Mark Smith added 17 points and Ismael Massoud had 13. Kansas State’s reserves were outscored 29-5.

It was the only Big 12 tournament game of the day as the event was reduced to nine teams because Oklahoma State was placed on one-year NCAA probation and is not eligible to participate in this year’s NCAA Tournament.

— Brandon Schneider signed a new four-year contract with Kansas
that will pay the Big 12 women's basketball coach of the year
$400,000 annually. It also comes with numerous benefits and
incentives through the 2025-26 season. Schneider led the Jayhawks to
a fifth-place finish in the Big 12 this season after they were voted
last in the league’s preseason poll. They won seven straight games
earlier this season for the program’s longest streak since 1997.
Their 20 wins in the regular season were their most since the
1999-2000 season. Kansas opens the Big 12 Tournament against
fourth-seeded Oklahoma on Friday in Kansas City, Missouri.

Major League Baseball has chopped off another week of the upcoming
season with the lockout in its 98th day. The decision means the
season won't begin until April 14 at the earliest and comes after

Press the Washington Commanders have agreed to acquire Indianapolis
Colts' quarterback Carson Wentz. The deal cannot be finalized until
the start of the new league year next week. It was not immediately
clear what the Commanders wound send to the Colts, but ESPN reported
two third-round draft picks were involved.

Fresh off its third straight bid for the Region VI Championship, Jenny Nkem Womsi and Brennan Kirchhoff of the Barton Community College women's basketball team earned post-season All-KJCCC and All-Region VI honors as selected by conference and region coaches.

Voted as the Co-Newcomer of the Year in landing on the 2nd Team of selections, Womsi was one of the top inside players in the region in posting 14 double-double performances throughout conference play and through the playoffs. Averaging 9.9 points and 8.9 rebounds for the season, Womsi's conference efforts helped the Cougars to a fourth place finish by rising her game to 11.0 points and a region leading 10.3 rebounds per contest. Womsi, along with Acorionna Lard, were also selected to the Region VI All-Tournament team this past Saturday following the Cougars' loss to No. 25 Hutchinson in the title game.

Kirchhoff garnered third team honors of the nineteen member selections, averaging a team second best 10.5 points and 5.6 rebounds despite usually being the shortest player on the court at 5'4". The heart and backbone of the squad, Kirchhoff usually drew the defensive assignment of the opponents best perimeter scoring threat while offensively putting up the offensive numbers to also lead the squad averaging over 31 minutes of court time per game.

The pair helped lead the Cougars close out the year strong going 8-2 in the final ten games including the program's third straight region championship loss to cap the year at 20-13.

Barton women earn pair of post-season basketball honors

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Chiefs placed the franchise tag on left tackle Orlando Brown Jr. on Monday, making it a near-certainty that he will play for Kansas City next season while also giving the two sides time to work out a long-term contract.

In an aggressive revamping of their offensive line last offseason, the Chiefs traded a first-round pick and three other draft picks to the Baltimore Ravens to acquire Brown, even though he had just one year left on his rookie contract.

By expending that much draft capital on protecting quarterback Patrick Mahomes' blind side, it became clear that Kansas City planned to either sign Brown to an extension or place the franchise tag on him. Because the Chiefs did the latter with a non-exclusive tag, Brown has the freedom to negotiate with other teams while Kansas City keeps the option of matching any offer.

If the Chiefs let Brown go, they would receive two first-round draft picks in compensation.

"We're going to work hard to get a deal done with him," Chiefs general manager Brett Veach said at last week's scouting combine in Indianapolis. "Hopefully everything ends up in a positive direction."

If Brown plays next season under the franchise tag, he would be paid the average of the top five salary cap hits for NFL left tackles. The exact number is not yet available, but it's likely to be about $16.5 million.

Teams had until Tuesday afternoon to place the franchise tag on a player.

Brown started every game for Kansas City last season, and every game the two years before that with Baltimore. He's missed just six of 64 regular-season games since he was the Ravens' third-round pick in the 2018 draft.

"Typically, the larger the deals the longer they take. We've been through that with Patrick and Chris (Jones) and what have you," Veach said. "We're going to work to see if we can get things executed as efficiently as possible, but we also know that it might take some time and we feel confident though by the start of the season we'll be in a good place there."

By using the tag on Brown, the Chiefs are allowing safety Tyrann Mathieu to explore free agency. The three-time All-Pro has made it clear that he wants to return to Kansas City, and Veach acknowledged last week that he would prefer to see No. 32 leading the Chiefs' secondary next season, but the numbers have to work for the cash-strapped franchise.

The Chiefs already released linebacker Anthony Hitchens to save some money, but they will need to make additional moves — either cuts or the restructuring of contracts — to get below the salary cap.

"We had a chance to talk (to Mathieu's agents). We communicated that we certainly love Tyrann, and Tyrann loves being here. This is actually the start of that process now," Veach said. "Once the season ends, the coaches do their deal and we sit back, we collect all the information — we get with the coaches after they go through their scheme evaluations.

"And we know that once Indy rolls around," Veach continued, "we'll have a chance to on one end, see all the great college prospects, but on the other hand, have an opportunity to talk with our players' agents and exchange information."

Chiefs place franchise tag on left tackle Orlando Brown

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Big 12 Tournament was the place where Kansas validated its regular-season conference championship each year, and usually confirmed its status as one of the top seeds and heavy favorites for the NCAA Tournament.

Five different schools have played in the last three Big 12 title games, and three different schools have walked away with a trophy: Texas last season, Iowa State three years ago and the Jayhawks the year before that. And no school has won back-to-back titles since the Cyclones won the 2014 and ’15 editions before their typical raucous crowds.

This year’s tournament figures to be just as wide open.

Yes, the sixth-ranked Jayhawks are back as the top seed and will play the winner of an opening-round game Wednesday night between Kansas State and West Virginia. But third-ranked Baylor, the defending national champion, lurks as the No. 2 seed as it tries to win its first Big 12 tourney title, No. 14 Texas Tech is seeded third under coach of the year Mark Adams, and the No. 21 Longhorns are plenty capable of defending their title as the tournament’s fourth seed.

Ranking second in region scoring, Downing reached double figure scoring in all but two games, eclipsing his average fourteen times including a program fourth best 42 points early in the season knocking off 12th ranked Odessa College.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — The Denver Broncos have finally landed a worthy successor to Peyton Manning.

Six years and a day after Manning retired, Broncos general manager George Paton agreed to send a massive haul of players and draft picks to the Seattle Seahawks for nine-time Pro Bowl quarterback Russell Wilson, two people familiar with the negotiations confirmed to The Associated Press on Tuesday.

The people spoke on condition of anonymity because the blockbuster trade, which is pending Wilson passing a physical, can’t become official until the start of the new league year on March 16.

The teams cannot comment on the deal until then, but the Broncos cleverly tweeted a clip of Tom Hanks’ character in “Cast Away” drawing a face on the volleyball he named “Wilson.”

About an hour later, the Seahawks tweeted another clip from that movie in which Hanks’ scraggly, skinny character loses the volleyball at sea and hollers, ” Wilson, where are you? Wilson! Wilson! ”

Denver was seen as the front-runner for Aaron Rodgers before the two-time reigning MVP agreed Tuesday to stay in Green Bay, presumably as the highest-paid player in NFL history. Not long afterward, Paton landed a Super Bowl-winning quarterback anyway, and one who’s five years younger than the 38-year-old Packers star.

The NFL Network reported the Seahawks agreed to send Wilson and a fourth-round pick to Denver in exchange for two first-round picks, two second-round picks, and a fifth-rounder, along with quarterback Drew Lock, defensive end Shelby Harris and tight end Noah Fant, the Broncos’ first-round draft pick in 2019.

Since Manning retired a month after winning Super Bowl 50, the Broncos have churned through 10 starting quarterbacks, including a different starter in each of the last five season openers: Trevor Siemian, Case Keenum, Joe Flacco, Lock and Teddy Bridgewater, who beat out Lock last summer.

Seattle’s offseason had mostly been focused on adjustments on defense with coaching and scheme changes, and the belief that with Wilson still at quarterback the Seahawks would remain contenders in the stacked NFC West.

Last week at the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis, coach Pete Carroll said that general manager John Schneider was receiving calls about Wilson’s availability but the Seahawks weren’t shopping him.

The trade, though, was the culmination of more than a year’s worth of buildup. Wilson first expressed his discontent with the franchise last offseason after Seattle won the division but lost in the first round of the playoffs.

The acrimony got to the point that his agent publicly expressed the teams Wilson would be willing to accept a trade to, but the quarterback and the Seahawks moved forward together for one more season.

This was always the offseason that seemed to make the most sense for a potential move with Wilson, however. He has two years remaining on his current contract and a salary cap hit of $37 million for the 2022 season.

Wilson was a third-round pick in 2012 out of Wisconsin. He won the starting job as a rookie after Seattle had signed Matt Flynn in free agency. The decision to go with Wilson was one of the smartest ever made by Carroll.

Wilson started 149 regular-season games and 16 playoff games before suffering a fractured middle finger on his right hand and missing four games last season, when he went 6-8. Seattle finished 7-10, the only losing season in Wilson’s tenure.

He struggled upon his return but finished strong, showing it was more of an injury-marred stretch than an indication he was in any sort of decline.

Wilson helped Seattle to its only Super Bowl title with a 43-8 thumping of Manning and the Broncos in Super Bowl 48, then lost to Tom Brady and the Patriots in the Super Bowl a year later. Overall, he’s 9-7 in the playoffs.

Lock is 8-13 with 25 touchdown passes and 20 interceptions over three seasons in Denver.

Unless the Seahawks package their newly acquired picks and try to land, say, Deshaun Watson from the Texans should he clear up his legal issues, it appears a larger rebuild may be in play for Seattle.

The Seahawks have major free agent questions with left tackle Duane Brown, safety Quandre Diggs, cornerback D.J. Reed and running back Rashaad Penny. There also have been questions about 31-year-old linebacker Bobby Wagner’s future in Seattle with the Seahawks facing a $20 million cap hit under his current contract.

(AP) — Aaron Rodgers is planning to come back to the Green Bay Packers for an 18th season, a move that keeps the reigning MVP quarterback off the trade market and answers the question that had dominated NFL offseason discussions. NFL Network reported that the 38-year-old Rodgers had agreed to a four-year, $200 million contract that includes $153 million in guaranteed money. Rodgers said any reports of the contract terms are not accurate and that he has not signed a deal yet.ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — The Jacksonville Jaguars used their franchise tag on left tackle Cam Robinson for the second straight year. The move guarantees Robinson $16.6 million in 2022. It also potentially divulges Jacksonville’s plans for the No. 1 pick in next month’s NFL draft. If Robinson signs the one-year tender, his salary would be fully guaranteed next season. The sides also could still work to reach a long-term deal. With Robinson returning, it’s unlikely the Jaguars would draft an offensive tackle with the top pick. Instead, they’re more likely to go with a pass rusher.GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — The Green Bay Packers are putting a franchise tag on Davante Adams to prevent the two-time All-Pro receiver from becoming an unrestricted free agent. Any team would have had the opportunity to sign Adams when the free agency period opens March 16 if the Packers hadn’t tagged him.
