KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Sean McNeil scored 21 points, Malik Curry added 17 points and No. 9 seed West Virginia beat eighth-seeded Kansas State 73-67 in the opener of the Big 12 Conference tournament. West Virginia advances to play top-seeded Kansas on Thursday. The Mountaineers lost at Kansas 85-59 in January and again at home 71-58 about a month later. Neither team led by more than nine points in this one. McNeil scored four points during a 10-2 run that gave West Virginia a 69-60 lead with 3:29 left. Curry and Taz Sherman made 3-pointers on consecutive possessions during the run. Nijel Pack led Kansas State with 18 points.
LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Brandon Schneider signed a new four-year contract with Kansas that will pay the Big 12 women's basketball coach of the year $400,000 annually. It also comes with numerous benefits and incentives through the 2025-26 season. Schneider led the Jayhawks to a fifth-place finish in the Big 12 this season after they were voted last in the league’s preseason poll. They won seven straight games earlier this season for the program’s longest streak since 1997. Their 20 wins in the regular season were their most since the 1999-2000 season. Kansas opens the Big 12 Tournament against fourth-seeded Oklahoma on Friday in Kansas City, Missouri.
NEW YORK (AP) — Major League Baseball has chopped off another week of the upcoming season with the lockout in its 98th day. The decision means the season won't begin until April 14 at the earliest and comes after differences narrowed on the three most contentious economic items under discussion. Management Wednesday gave the union a new option that would allow an agreement to be cut short after the 2024 season, leading to even more bargaining.
UNDATED (AP) — A person with direct knowledge of the situation tells The Associated Press the Washington Commanders have agreed to acquire Indianapolis Colts' quarterback Carson Wentz. The deal cannot be finalized until the start of the new league year next week. It was not immediately clear what the Commanders wound send to the Colts, but ESPN reported two third-round draft picks were involved.
PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Tiger Woods is going into the World Golf Hall of Fame tonight and there was never any debate. He already had the career Grand Slam at age 24. He had 46 wins and 10 majors before he turned 30. More than numbers, Woods is all about inspiration and influence. Players grew up idolizing and learning from what he did. And prize money is greater than ever because of the TV contracts the PGA Tour negotiated. Also being inducted are former PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem, three-time U.S. Women’s Open champion Susie Berning and the late visionary Marion Hollins.
