Shari Lynn Middleton, 56, passed away May 7, 2023, at her home in Great Bend. She was born April 14, 1967, in Encino, Calif. to Loren &amp; Judy (Butterworth) Spatz. She married Brett Middleton on December 4, 1993, in Oxford, Kan.

Coming to Great Bend from Oxford in 2001, Shari was the owner and operator of On the Rocks Liquor Store and was employed by Farmers Bank and Trust. Previously, Shari served as a secretary for Jefferson Elementary School, Great Bend, for many years. An avid sports fan, Shari was always cheering on a team, be it K-State football, Kansas City Chiefs football, and many softball games through the years. She enjoyed going to the lake, golfing, cooking and baking, lounging by the pool and playing canasta and dominos. Being the “life of the party”, Shari loved to spend time with her family, friends and her puppies.

Survivors include, her husband, Brett Middleton; four daughters, Erika Loughridge and husband J.D. of Park City, Autumn Fischer and husband Justin of Salina, Hannah Middleton of Great Bend and Hunter Hisky and husband Hunter of St. Louis, Mo.; her father, Loren Spatz of Thousand Oaks, Calif.; her mother, Judy Houston of Oxford; several step siblings; and five grandchildren, Brooklyn, Brayden, Aubreena, Axlee and Jexen.

Visitation will be held from Noon to 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, May 10, 2023, at Bryant Funeral Home. Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, May 11, 2023, at Bryant Funeral Home, with Pastor Danny Ginn presiding.

Jacob Patrick Meeks, 21, passed away on May 5, 2023, in Great Bend, Kan. He was born on August 13, 2001, to Michael Meeks and Elizabeth “Elle” Slater.

A current resident of Manhattan, Kan., Jacob was an active military member in the United States Army Reserves, joining on August 16, 2018, and achieving the rank of E4 SPC on April 29, 2021. Jacob was a mechanic in the 129th Transportation Company, under the 821st Transportation Battalion, at Fort Riley. He received the National Defense Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon and the Army Achievement Medal.

He loved his two Great Danes: Tank and Tequila and spending time with friends and family. He will be remembered for being able to fix or repair anything and always making himself available to lend a hand. He never knew a stranger and never turned down an opportunity to help a person in need. He was a respectful young man that gave everything of himself. A natural jokester, Jacob loved his family whole-heartedly and loved his friends like family, bringing a smile to everyone he met.

Survivors include his mother, Elle (Kevin) Randa of Great Bend, Kan.; his father, Michael Meeks of Corpus Christi, Tex.; three brothers, Britt Davidson, twin Jonas Meeks, and Gabriel Schwager, all of Great Bend, Kan.; and three sisters, Damaris Meeks, Meah Randa, and Madison Bittner; and special niece Hadley Behnke, all of Great Bend; special aunt, Jodie Koenigs of Cheyenne, Wyo. and grandmother, Cathy Bland of Cheyenne, Wyo. He is preceded in death by his grandparents, Walter and Ruth Slater and Larry Meeks.

Dona Jean Smith, 93, passed away on May 6, 2023, at Hays Medical Center, Hays, Kan. She was born on February 11, 1930, to Palmer and Caroline (Massier) Deines in Hays, Kan.

Coming to Albert from Ellis in 1963, and then becoming a Great Bend resident in 2013, Dona worked at the Holiday Inn, but the job she enjoyed most in her working years was providing daycare to children. She also enjoyed playing bingo, her flowers, and watching dirt track racing.

Survivors include a daughter, Sheila (Bob) DeWald of Otis, Kan; three sons, Charles “Chuck” (Pam) Smith of Buhler, Kan., Robert “Bobby” (Teresa) Smith of Lyons, Kan., and Kenny (Marti) Smith of Great Bend, Kan.; eight grandchildren: Lesley (Doug) Gaughan, Laura (Kevin) McCarter, Stacy (Chad) Volkman, Shadd (Trina) Smith, Troy (Alyssa) Smith, Melissa Smith, Tyler Smith, and Shane (Kit) Smith; fifteen great grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Helen Deines of WaKeeney, Kan. She is preceded by her parents; a grandson, Cody Smith; a twin brother, Donald Deines; a sister, Eleanor Swank; and a daughter-in-law, Monika Smith.

Dona Smith, age 93

Linda Kay Koehn, 60, passed away May 6, 2023, surrounded by her family at her home in Larned.

She was born April 1, 1963 in Hays, the daughter of Albert and Espie Lee Blackston Farmer.

A longtime area resident, she had a passion for caring with adults with developmental disabilities working at Parkview and Sunflower Diversified. She had a strong faith and attended many different churches. She was a Boy Scout leader, loved gardening, planting her flower beds, crafting, jet skiing, time at the lake, motorcycles, baking and making Christmas candy and fudge, camping and family time. She was a collector of many things, loved Country Stampede, animals, and her grandbabies. Those that loved her most were known to call her Granny K or Granny Balls.

On Aug. 9, 2001, she married Steven H. Koehn at Lake Wilson; he survives.

Other survivors include: two sons, Robert (Kara Speres) Tisdall, Larned, Jason Jennings, Newton; two daughters, Desiree (Natasha Carver) Clark, Ellinwood, Crystal (Jenny) VanLandingham, Omaha, Neb.; brother, Troy Farmer, Assaria; two sisters, Janice Courson, and Showna Montano, both of Hutchinson; 10 grandchildren: Kaylynn, Chloe, EJ, Phenix, Ayanna, Amaya, Calum, Alex, Freya, Allana; and two great-grandchildren, Braelynn and Mateo.

She was preceded in death by: her parents; sister, Betty Hrabe; niece, Joni Marie Hollingsworth; and nephew, Bo Ray Montano.

Linda Koehn, age 60

Kent Kendall Schriner, age 76, passed away at his home in Albert, Kansas, on the morning of May 4, 2023. He was born on January 31, 1947, in Great Bend, to Elmer J. &amp; Marjorie L. (Dirks) Schriner. He married Ellen Dinkel on May 24, 1969, at Hays, Kansas.

In addition to spending a lifetime in Albert, Kent was a farmer, stockman and professional supervisor. He served as a volunteer Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) for Albert and Otis, as well as the Albert Fire Department. Kent was a decorated Vietnam veteran who proudly served in the United States Army.

Survivors include his wife Ellen; two sons, Jesse Schriner and wife Sabra of Seattle, Washington and Joey Schriner and wife Roxanna of West Chester, Ohio; and two granddaughters, Alexa and Rienna; two grandsons, Ethan and Zachary; and his favorite great-grandson, Roman Schriner. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, Randy.

Visitation will be held from noon to 8 p.m., Tuesday, April 9, 2023, at Bryant Funeral Home, with family to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, May 10, 2023, at Bryant Funeral Home, with Pastor Larry Schumacher presiding. Kent Schriner, age 76

Richard Lee “Dick” Reichuber, 76, passed away on May 3, 2023, at Clara Barton Hospital, Hoisington, Kan. He was born on September 21, 1946, Great Bend, Kan., to Edwin and Margaret (Birzer) Reichuber. On July 20, 1968, he married Mary Jane Luebbers at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Claflin, Kan. She survives.

A lifetime resident of Barton County, Dick was an acoustical ceiling installer and co-owner of B&amp;R Acoustical Inc. DBA Sound Control Company. He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Parish, Odin Knights of Columbus, and a former member of the Sons of the American Legion. Dick enjoyed hunting, was a hard worker, very giving of his time, and above all, took great care of his family.

Survivors include his wife of the home; a son, Jason Reichuber of Kansas City, Mo.; a daughter, Sara Reichuber of Hoisington, Kan.; son of the heart, Scott Christians of Hoisington, Kan.; three brothers, Edwin (Aileen) Reichuber of Hutchinson, Kan., Kenneth Reichuber of Burrton, Kan., and Gary (Janie) Reichuber of Wichita, Kan; sister-in-law, Margaret Milsap of Great Bend, Kan.; and numerous nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; and beloved nieces and nephews.

Richard 'Dick' Reichuber, age 76

Donald Henry Schloctermeier, 77, passed away on May 3, 2023, at his home near Ellinwood. He was born in Great Bend, on Dec. 23, 1945, to&nbsp;Henry and Erma (Stoss) Schloctermeier. Don was a lifetime area resident, graduating from Ellinwood High School in 1963, and he lived just a few miles away from Sts. Peter &amp; Paul Catholic Church. He married his high school sweetheart, Jeanne Rae Martin, on July 3, 1965. She passed away April 1, 2018. 

Don loved to farm and took great joy in his labor as a young boy to his last days as a farmer. Don also cherished his time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Memberships include St. Joseph Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus #1187.&nbsp;He leaves behind his daughters, Jamie (Brian) Zink, Ellinwood; Jill Moore, Overland Park; brother, Roy (Elaine) Schloctermeier, Ellinwood; sister, Jan (John) Peters, Lewistown, Mont.; grandchildren, Lacey Steffan,&nbsp;Austin (Danielle) Zink,&nbsp;Lindsey (Dustin) Colston,&nbsp;Daniel Immediato,&nbsp;Rachel (Chase) Pumford and Raegan Moore; great-grandchildren, Callie &amp; Maxx Steffan and Wade &amp; Clara Zink. Randy Lee Brittain, 63, passed away April 30, 2023, at his home in Great Bend. He was born Nov. 20, 1959, at Great Bend, to Robert L. &amp; Velda L. (McMahan) Brittain.

A lifetime Great Bend resident, Randy was the Environmental Compliance &amp; Regulations Specialist at KDOT for over 30 years until his retirement in 2022. He was an avid model train collector.

Survivors include, two brothers, Rick Brittain and wife Heidi of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Leon Brittain and wife, Loretta, of Great Bend. He was preceded in death by his parents.

There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. A private family service will be held at a later date.

Leona Slankard, 101, passed away April 30, 2023, at Larskfield Place Healthcare Center in Wichita. She was born Dec. 14, 1921, in rural Barton County near Susank, to George J. and Anna M. (Daubert) Maier. She married David Slankard May 10, 1941, in Great Bend. He died Oct. 22, 1975.

A long-time Great Bend resident, Leona was a self-employed housecleaner, and she also did custodial work for Becker Homes. She also worked as a merchandiser at Walmart for several years. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and was active in the Ladies and Seniors Groups. Leona enjoyed cross stitching, doing crosswords and puzzles, taking long daily walks, but especially loved playing cards with her family and friends.

Survivors include, her daughter, Carol Nix of Wichita; a granddaughter, Melissa Nix of Wichita; a step-granddaughter, Rebekah Unruh and Delmar of Galva; two step-great-grandchildren, LaTisha Brown and Tyler Unruh; two step-great grandchildren; a sister, Eleanora Postlethwaite; and many nieces and nephews. Leona Slankard, age 101

Phyllis June McGillivray, 92, passed away May 1, 2023, at her home in Great Bend. She was born Dec. 11, 1930, in Hopewell, to Ivan and Gertrude Lovell (Bradley) Keen.

Phyllis spent most of her childhood in Hutchinson, where she played basketball and was a Homecoming Queen candidate. She married Glenn Edward McGillivray in June of 1950. To this union, there were born four children: Debby, Mike, Sue and Stewart.

A long-time Great Bend resident, Phyllis was the Postmaster in Ulysses for many years before coming to the Ellinwood Post Office, where she retired in 1989. She was baptized and a long-standing member of the Shelton Memorial Christian Church in Ulysses. She enjoyed music of all kinds, singing, dancing, and bowling. She especially loved spending time with her family and being very onery with them.

Survivors include, her children, Debby Lambert and husband Frank of Marietta, Okla., Mike McGillivray and his wife Carey of LaCrosse, Sue Levingston and her husband Robert and Stewart McGillivray all of Great Bend; a brother, Kenny Keen and his wife Charlene of Kinsley; three sisters, Karen King of Oklahoma City, Okla., Kathy Wapelhorst of Wichita and Carla Harris of Shawnee, Okla.; a sister in law, Virginia Roberts of Hugoton; 13 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; 3 step-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Glenn McGillivray; a brother, Ivan “Max” Keen; and two sisters, Jody Polly and Madge Pauls.

The Baxendale family was also a part of Phyllis’ life. The family wishes to thank the doctors, nurses and staff of Golden Belt Home Health &amp; Hospice and Angel Care Home Health. They were amazing and provided amazing care and support.

Phyllis McGillivray, age 92

Rozel – Rodney Boese, 71, passed away May 1, 2023 at his residence in Rozel.

He was born October 9, 1951, in LaCrosse, Kansas, the son of Vernon G and Ella M. Eilts Boese.

A lifetime area resident, he was a stockman, loved hunting, fishing, trapping, skinning and going to livestock sales. He served in the United States Navy. He moved back home and worked at Sanford and Rozel Co-op, volunteered on Rozel Fire Department. He moved to Wyoming to work in the uranium mines. Later moved to Arizona to work in the copper mines. Moved back home and worked at Larned Correctional Mental Health Facility, LaCrosse Livestock Market, Southwest Livestock in Dodge City and Ryan Farms of Burdett.

On August 27, 1977 he married Mary J. McVey at Larned. She survives.

Other survivors include: son, Curt Rocha, Rozel; two daughters, Lori (Robert) Larsen, Rozel, Amy Boese, Leon, Kansas; brother, Lavern (Rosa) Boese, Great Bend; three sisters, Glenna Belcher, Kinsley, Sandra, (Dennis) Sauer, Rozel, Marva D. McDonald, Kinsley; six grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and one great grandchild on the way.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; two brothers, Robert Boese, and Brent Boese; and sister, Shirley Shank; one great grandchild.

Cremation has taken place, memorial service will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday May 4, 2023 at Brown’s Grove Cemetery with Pastor Barry Bond presiding. Military graveside rights will be provided by the United States Navy.

Bernard (Barney) John Kruse, 70, of Hoisington, died April 5, 2023, at Wesley Medical Center. He was born Sept. 17, 1952, in Colby, the son of Marlin John Kruse and Irene Ann Heim Kruse.&nbsp;

He went to school in Leoville, and Graduated from Hoxie High School in 1970.

Bernard attended St. Mary of The Plains and graduated from Barton County Community College and Southern Technical College with degrees in Electronic Technology.&nbsp;

He worked for the City of Hoisington Power Plant and retired as their superintendent.&nbsp;

Survivors include Justin Bernard Kruse (son), Nicholas Dale Kruse (son), Marlene Tignor (sister), Donna McGee (sister), Patricia Brown (sister), Mary and Gary Deyle (sister), John and Cindy Kruse (brother), Mike Kruse (brother), Susan and Steve Johnson (sister), Dan and Penny Kruse (brother), Christina and Allan Immelman (sister). Barney was preceded in death by his parents and Steve Kruse (brother).&nbsp;

There will be a Motorcycle Awareness Ride from Hoisington to Great Bend on May 6. Meet at the Tap Room on Main Street in Hoisington, with kickstands up by 3 p.m. A Celebration of Life to follow at the American Legion in Great Bend. Food and drinks will be provided. Barney supported several charities, and memorials will be collected at the Celebration of Life and divided between them. A list will be available that day.&nbsp;

Bernard 'Barney' Kruse, age 70

Alberta Fay Douglas, 86, passed away April 28, 2023, in Great Bend. She was born March 9, 1937, at Bazine, KS, at the family farm home, to Henry J. &amp; Elizabeth (Koch) Foos. She attended Bazine Grade School and graduated from Bazine High School in 1955.

After graduating she moved to Great Bend, KS, where she met and married Gaylon Clayton on April 7, 1957, at Bazine. Gaylon passed away on October 1, 1960, due to a car accident. They had one daughter, Charlotte (Clayton) Myers. She then married John “Max” Douglas on June 17, 1962. He passed away December 18, 2007.

Alberta worked at Schlumberger Well Services, Marlette Mobile Homes, McDonald Tank Company, Social and Rehabilitation Services, KETCH (Kansas Elks Training Center for the Handicapped), Saint Francis Community Services, Great Bend Municipal Court and was co-owner of the Kitchen Cupboard in Great Bend. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and VFW Auxiliary. She was a Camp Fire Girls group leader and Camp Fire Director for Camp Chu-Wa-Ni for many years and dearly loved it. She loved to watch her KU Basketball games and the Kansas City Chiefs play football. Alberta especially enjoyed family dinners and get togethers. The family enjoyed her fried chicken, homemade ice cream and chocolate chip cookies.

Survivors include, her daughter, Charlotte (Clayton) Myers and husband Randy of Great Bend; a son, David Douglas and wife Connie of Cozad, Neb.; stepchildren, Debbie Gartner and husband Frank of Dublin, Calif. and Scott Douglas and wife Carla of Brentwood, Calif.; grandchildren, Nathan Myers and wife Brianna of Hays, Travis Myers of Great Bend, Denton Douglas and wife Sheena of Tecumseh, KS; step grandchildren, Alesha Gartner of Dublin, Calif. and her partner Jorge Barailar and Matthew Gartner of Sacramento, Calif.; great grandchildren, Bentley Douglas and Xander Myers; step great grandchildren, Brayden Barailar and Gavin Gartner; and many nieces and nephews. Surviving siblings are Clarence Foos and wife Ethel of Bazine; and sister in law, Enid Foos of Lincoln, Neb. Alberta Fay Douglas, age 86

Charles Edward Disque, 98, died April 28, 2023, at River Bend Senior Living, Great Bend. He was born June 21, 1924, in Claflin, to Adam and Margaret (Radenberg) Disque.

Charles attended country school district #75 and then graduated from Claflin High School in 1943. He served during WWII in the U.S. Army Ordinance Alaska Defense. He was a farmer and a carpenter, farming and doing construction work in Ellsworth and Barton Counties.

Charles was a member of Claflin United Methodist Church, where he had served on the pastor-parish relations committee and was a church historian and delegate. He was also active in the Claflin Methodist Mens Club, the Masonic Lodge #331, the Claflin Housing Board, and the Barton County Historical Society, and was a former Cub Scout Leader and secretary for the Claflin CO-OP Board.

On Sept. 30, 1951, he married Verna Leona Ehly in Claflin. After 68 blessed years together, she died on July 29, 2019.

He is survived by two daughters, Janet Sellens and husband David of Olathe, and Corrine Clark and husband Jim of Hays; two grandchildren, Jaclyn and Derek; and great-granddaughter, Kiran; three brothers, Herman Disque of Stafford, Harvey Disque of Salina, and Walter Disque and wife Joyce of Claflin.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, four brothers, Martin, Clarence, Marlin, and Edgar Disque, and six sisters, Edna, Grace, and Velma Disque, Mabel Flickinger, Aline Howser, and Leona Welch.

Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday with family to greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, May 4, 2023, at Claflin United Methodist Church, with Pastor Diana Webster presiding. Burial will follow in Claflin Cemetery.

Theodore Joseph “Teddy” Jacobs, 66, Goodland, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, April 26, 2023, at Goodland Regional Medical Center, Goodland, Kansas.

Teddy was born January 22, 1957, in Hays, Kansas, the son of Melvin A. and Wanda L. (Ochs) Jacobs. He was a resident of Goodland, Kansas, for 30+ years.

He enjoyed participating in Special Olympics, attending county fairs, and craft fairs, camping, and dancing. He especially loved his rocking chair.

Survivors include: three brothers, Melvin G. Jacobs, Great Bend, Kansas, Paul A. Jacobs (Lori), Great Bend, Kansas, and Patrick L. Jacobs (Sally), Rush Center, Kansas; one sister, Diana Lynn Bakeberg (Randy), Gastonia, North Carolina; eight nephews and nieces, Tyson Jacobs (Tami), Aaron Jacobs (Jennifer), Andrew Jacobs (Amanda), Alex Jacobs, Austin Jacobs, Adam Jacobs, Katrina Jacobs, and Megan Jacobs; and seven great nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Wayne Jacobs; one sister in law, Clydene Jacobs; and two nieces, Kimberly Jacobs, and Elizabeth Jacobs.

Michael Scheuerman, age 49

Dennis Eugene DeYoung, age 66, passed away on Monday, April 24, 2023, at his home.

Dennis was born July 11, 1956, to Stanley Calvin and Betty Jean (Osborn) DeYoung in Plainville, Kansas. He married Diane Elizabeth Geist on August 17, 1984, in Hays, Kansas. She preceded him in death May 2, 2017.

He was a self-employed heavy equipment operator in the land field and oilfield industry. In the late '70s and early '80s, he worked for Pan-Am Construction in Africa, Liberia and Kenya operating heavy equipment. Dennis was a United States Army Veteran, and a member of the American Legion. He enjoyed fishing, watching the OU Sooners, and especially the LA Rams.

He is survived by a son, Calvin DeYoung of Damar, Kansas; daughter Renee DeYoung, Great Bend, KS; three sisters, Terri (John) Richardson, Clairmont, NC; Janice (Dennis) Craven, Wichita, KS; and Janet (Mike) Bruna, Plainville, KS.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, infant daughter, Elizabeth, and nephew, Adam Bruna.

Dennis Eugene DeYoung, age 66

Richard E. "Coach" Towers, 92, of Manhattan, passed away on Sunday, April 23rd, 2023, at his home following complications from Multiple Myeloma. He was a retired Athletic Director and Coach.

Richard Ephraim Towers was born in Kansas City, KS on February 10, 1931, the son of the late Mabel Daisy (Stitt) and Guy McKinley Towers. He and Wann Harwood of Manhattan, KS were married on August 9, 1953, in Manhattan at Danforth Chapel. Dick was raised in Olathe, Kansas graduating from Olathe High School in 1949. He was a football and track standout at Kansas State University, receiving bachelor's and master’s degrees in education and administration.

Helping others was a driving force for Coach Towers. He was known for his great storytelling, being the “activities director” for many family gatherings, leading the birthday song at his Vista Coffee Group, and cheering on his golf and fishing buddies. He was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Manhattan.

As an athlete his teammates voted him ”Most Inspirational Player." As a football coach his peers selected him Coach of the Year at the High School, Junior College, and NCAA Division 1 district level.

ROTC took him to Fort Leonard Wood, MO, after graduation from Kansas State. He then began his football coaching career, with stops at Leavenworth High School and Manhattan High School. His 1961 Manhattan High school team was crowned state champions, and these players continue to maintain a special relationship to this day.

His college coaching career took him from KSU to Southern Illinois University and finally Duke University. Athletic administration brought him back to Kansas in 1977 where Dick was assistant superintendent of schools and athletic director in Great Bend. Following that, he returned to his alma mater as athletic director and was instrumental in landing KSU’s first bowl game bid. He finished his career at Iowa State University in athletic administration.

After retirement he and his son Rick developed Sand Creek Self Storage east of Manhattan. During this period Dick was able to focus on enjoying life with his wife Wann, enjoying many fantastic trips, family vacations, fishing adventures and innumerable rounds of golf.

In 1995, Dick won the Senior Golf Championship at Indian Hills Country Club in Mission Hills, Kansas. It was one of his many golfing accomplishments along with a few holes in one.

He valued the wonderful relationship he had with his sisters, children and their spouses, grandchildren, great grandchildren, along with his nieces and nephews. Dick cherished his friendships with colleagues, classmates and former players.

Dick is survived by his wife of 69 years, Wann, two daughters, Betsy (Larry) Shapiro, of Morristown, NJ; Donna Hemingway, of West Branch, Iowa; son, Rick (Sheila)Towers, of Rossville; two sisters, Lillian Partis, of Ottawa, KS; Janiece Towers, of Manhattan; also surviving are seven grandchildren, Becky (Chris) Radich, Jessie Shapiro, Jon Hemingway, Emily (DoHun) Kim, David Towers, Austin (Mandy) Floersch and Emmy (Jason) Sedlacek; and nine great grandchildren. Coach Towers is preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Louise Hyer and LaVaun Miller; his brother, Charles Towers, and his son-in-law Paul Hemingway and grandson Loren Hemingway.

The family will receive friends from 10:00 am until the memorial service begins at 11:00 AM on Saturday, April 29th, at the First Presbyterian Church. 800 Leavenworth St, with Rev Jason Pittman officiating. Coach Dick Towers, age 92

Carl Tobias&nbsp;“CT”&nbsp;Radke, 87, of Russell, Kansas, died on Tuesday,&nbsp;April 25, 2023, at the Wheatland&nbsp;Nursing Home in Russell.

Carl was born in Hoisington, Kansas, the son of Tobias and Amelia (Bitter) Radke. &nbsp;He grew up in Milberger, Kansas, and graduated&nbsp;from Russell High School in 1954. &nbsp;After&nbsp;high school, he joined the United&nbsp;States&nbsp;Navy serving on the USS&nbsp;Battleship&nbsp;Missouri.&nbsp;&nbsp;After serving his country, he met, fell in love and was united in marriage to Margaret JoAnn Boele on December 26, 1971. &nbsp;From this union Carl and Margaret&nbsp;were blessed with&nbsp;two children, son Michael and daughter Pam.

Carl worked with Radke Implement in Milberger from 1955 to 1965.&nbsp;&nbsp;Later, he&nbsp;worked as owner and operator of his own contract pumper business&nbsp;and also worked&nbsp;as a farmer and rancher. &nbsp;He was a&nbsp;longtime member of the United Emmanuel Lutheran Church of Milberger&nbsp;and was on the church council. &nbsp;He was also a member of&nbsp;the Russell&nbsp;V.F.W. Post&nbsp;#6240&nbsp;and manager of the rural water district&nbsp;#3. &nbsp;He enjoyed riding his motorcycle, fishing, hunting, camping and singing in the church choir. &nbsp;Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family.

Surviving family include his son Michael Radke and wife Jodi of Russell, Kansas and daughter Pam Rowell of Milberger, Kansas; brother Vernon Radke of Russell, Kansas; sisters Norma Koehler of Kansas City, Missouri, and Rosalinda&nbsp;Addington and husband Dale of Topeka, Kansas; 4 grandchildren&nbsp;James Rowell, Kasey Radke, Michaela Suchy and&nbsp;husband&nbsp;Kelton and Jonae Radkeand great granddaughter&nbsp;Layla Suchy.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Margaret on January 04, 2010 and sister Doris Steinert.

A celebration of Carl’s life will be held at&nbsp;10:30 A.M. on Tuesday, May 2, 2023, at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Russell, Kansas. &nbsp;Burial will follow at the Milberger Cemetery in Milberger, Kansas. &nbsp;Military honors will be presented by the Russell V.F.W. Post #6240. &nbsp;Visitation will be from 9 A.M. to 8 P.M. on Monday, May 01, 2023, at the mortuary with family greeting guests from 6 P.M. to 7 P.M. Monday evening. &nbsp;

Carl Tobias 'CT' Radke, age 87

Marcella Mae (Hoffman) Flax, "Sally", 88 of Ellis. Kansas passed away April 24, 2023, at Trego County Lemke LTC in WaKeeney.

Sally was born on April 17,1935 in Odin, KS to Michael and Margaret (Feltis) Hoffman. She attended Great Bend High School and graduated in 1953. Sally met the love of her life, Paul Flax, at her cousin’s wedding. They were married on August 24, 1954, in Great Bend. The following August they welcomed a son, Jerome, and the following fall, a daughter, Julia. Having to move many times with the railroad, Sally and Paul always returned to Ellis, calling it home. They were married for 53 years before Paul's passing in 2007.

Sally was always ready to take a vacation or bus trip with an occasional stop at the casinos. Her travels allowed her to see much of the United States and some European Countries. She enjoyed morning coffee with the ladies, playing bingo, bridge or pinochle with family and friends. But one of her greatest joys was being with her grandchildren. She was a member of St Mary's Church and the D of I in Ellis.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband Paul; Son, Jerome; sisters Mercedes Huslig (Arthur), Anna Koester (Joseph,) Dolores Schneweis (Bernard) and Sister Mary Lawrence.

She is survived by a daughter Julia Hillman, WaKeeney; six grandchildren, Angela Flax (Geoff Martin) Olathe; Dustin Mattheyer (Mara) Ellis; Audrey Bates (Noel) Ellis; Mathew Flax (Amanda Armstrong) Salina; Jessica Cooper (Bryan) Topeka; and Preston Mattheyer (Jamie) WaKeeney; fifteen great grandchildren and six great great grandchildren.

Services will be held Friday, April 28, 2023 at 11:00 AM at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Ellis, Kansas.&nbsp; Visitation will be from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM at the church, with a rosary at 10:30.&nbsp;

Robert “Bob” William Willesden, II, 75, passed away April 25, 2023, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. He was born July 9, 1947, in Queens, New York, to Robert William Willesden and Lillian Elizabeth (Alger) Willesden. He married Dianne (Dolezal) Ewing June 23, 1979, in Great Bend.

A long time Great Bend resident, Bob retired as a Lt. Disciplinarian Administrator in 2014, after 28 faithful years of service, at Larned Correctional Facility. Previously, he had been employed as a machinist and welder for 11 years in the oilfield industry, and through the course of many years, he demonstrated his skill as a horse farrier. Bob was a member of Faith Community Church, was a motorcycle enthusiast and marksman, enjoyed four-wheeling, and enjoyed watching western and action movies, as well as the History Channel, Tucker Carlson Tonight, and other current political news.

Survivors include, his wife, Dianne Willesden of the home; two sons, Robert W. Willesden, III, and wife Debbie of Hoisington and Brian Ewing of Great Bend; three daughters, Tiffany Nily and husband David of Great Bend, Aimee Farris and husband Bill of East Troy, Wisc. And Brandy Gaddis and husband Mark of Wichita; a brother, George Gorsline, Jr. and wife Debbie of Gulfport, Miss.; two sisters, Edith Barton of Topeka and Joyce Burnham and husband Mike of Great Bend; a sister-in-law, Evyonne Willesden of Fort Worth, Tex.; sixteen grandchildren; and five great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert W. Willesden; his mother and stepfather, Lillian and George Gorsline; and a brother, Joseph Willesden.

Robert 'Bob' Willesden II, age 75

Robert Ray LaRue, 83, passed away April 23, 2023 at Diversicare of Larned.

He was born November 16, 1939 in Portageville, Missouri, the son of William Bryant LaRue and Mabel Maxine Hudgens LaRue.

Moving to Larned in 2015, he was a Billing/Accounting Clerk for an independent oil company. He attended Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Larned, was a member of the Knights of Columbus, volunteered at the movie theatre and Gateway Medical Center. He was very active at his church and was a Boy Scout Leader in Granite City, Illinois.

On June 19, 1961 he married Patricia June Barunica at Granite City, Illinois; she survives.

Other survivors include: two daughters, Christine (William Chapman) LaRue, Larned, Cheryl LaRue, Granite City, Illinois; two sons, Robert (Jasmin) LaRue, Elkgrove Village, Illinois, Walter LaRue, Ferguson, Missouri; sister, Shirley Kellerman; brother, Donald LaRue; and two grandchildren, Joshua LaRue and Justin LaRue.

He was preceded in death by his parents; five sisters, Dorothy Patillo, Juanita Downey, Gladys Eurene Phillips, Betty Winchester, and Aline Buie; two brothers, William LaRue and Herman Eugene Mitchell.

Memorial service will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, April 28, 2023 at Beckwith Mortuary, Larned, with Father Bernard Felix presiding.

Robert LaRue, age 83

Katie Sue Haag, 70, of Hays, died Tuesday, April 25, 2023, at the Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, Kansas, after the results of a fall at her home.,

She was born on July 3, 1952, in Abilene, Kansas, the daughter of Vernon and Eunice Steele Witwer. Katie graduated from Abilene High School in 1970 and later attended Fort Hays State University where she met Dale Kent Haag. They were married on January 15, 1973 in Abilene.&nbsp;

Katie and Dale returned to Hays in 1983 where she was a Supervisor at the ALCO Store for 20 years and a Co-Manager at Tandy’s Hallmark for 10 years.

While in college, Katie was a member of Tri Sigma, in recent years she enjoyed being a member of the Red Hat Ladies and having coffee with her friends. You could always find Katie on the phone with either family or friends.&nbsp;

Please remember Katie each time you are drinking a Starbucks coffee or listening to a George Strait song.

Survivors include her husband of 50 years, Dale of the home in Hays; sons Jonathan Haag and wife Peggy of Great Bend, Jason Haag of Orlando, Fla., and James Haag of Alexandria, Va.; brothers Lee Witwer and wife Bev of Iowa City, Iowa and Wayne Witwer and wife Mary Katherine of San Antonio, Tx.; sister Karen Courtney and husband Lynn of Ft. Collins, Colo.; and three grandchildren Emma and Kaylee Haag of Great Bend and Bentley Haag of Redding, Calif.

As were her wishes, cremation has taken place and private family services will be held.

Katie Sue Haag, age 70

Frank N. Blodgett, 84, passed peacefully, after a short illness, surrounded by family on Saturday, April 22, 2023.&nbsp;&nbsp;Frank was born March 2, 1939, in Great Bend, to Kenneth R. and Evelyn G. Blodgett.&nbsp; Frank lived in Claflin until his family moved to Hutchinson when he was a young boy.&nbsp;&nbsp; He graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1957, and attended Hutchinson Community College and Kansas State University.&nbsp;

Frank married Sara Sue Bowles on November 24, 1962, in Hutchinson. After marriage, Frank and Sara moved to Frank’s farm in Arlington, where they raised their three daughters and lived for 55 years before retiring and moving to Hutchinson.&nbsp;

Frank is survived by: his wife of almost 61 years, Sara; daughters, Sara Weathers (Terry), Carrie Venezia, and Molly Williams (Michael), all of Hutchinson; grandchildren, Emily Reed (Tyler) of Great Bend, Erin Givens (Kassidy), Lane Williams, and Lexi Williams, all of Hutchinson; and three great- grandchildren, Cooper and Cohen Givens and Jensen Reed.

&nbsp;As a young farmer, Frank was given an award for his efforts in soil conservation.&nbsp;&nbsp;Later in life, he served on the Reno County Conservation Board for twelve years. After retiring from farming, Frank followed in his father’s footsteps and became a realtor and worked for Oswald Real Estate for many years.

&nbsp;Frank was a true family man and always a good friend.&nbsp;&nbsp;He treasured spending time with his family and special friends in the mountains of New Mexico. He enjoyed shooting trap with family and his fishing trips with “the guys”.&nbsp;&nbsp;Frank’s big heart touched the lives of many.

&nbsp;Memorial service will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, April 29, 2023, at First Mennonite Church, 52 Rambler Road, Hutchinson, with Pastor Tonya Ramer Wenger officiating.&nbsp;&nbsp;Inurnment will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery, Hutchinson.&nbsp;&nbsp;Friends may sign his book from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday and 9:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday, with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Elliott Mortuary.&nbsp;&nbsp;Cremation has taken place.

Frank Blodgett, age 84

Shelly Lynn VanWinkle, 58, passed away April 20, 2023, at her home in Newton, Kan. She was born October 9, 1964, in Wichita, Kan., to Conrad &amp; Wanda (Vickery) Richey. She married William VanWinkle April 24, 1999, in Wichita, Kan.

Shelly moved to Newton in 2016, from Great Bend, Kan. She was the scale master for the Barton County Landfill then Harvey County Landfill. Shelly had many other certifications as well, like her CDL. She loved getting her nails done and attending family get togethers.

Survivors include, her husband, William “Kent” VanWinkle of the home; two sons, Kevin Richey and wife, Sarah of Wichita, Kan., and Nicholas Thomas of Mount Pleasant, Iowa; stepdaughter, Darline VanWinkle of Springfield, Mo.; four grandchildren, Kaitlynn and Konnor Richey, Ivy Peterson, and Arianna Jackson; two brothers, Kenny Richey and wife, Janet, and Brian Richey and wife, Chris, all of Wichita, Kan.; and three sisters, Evelyn Cheek and husband, Bill, Linda Diggs and husband, Bill, and Connie Wiss, all of Wichita, Kan.

She loved getting her nails done and attending family get togethers.Survivors include, her husband, William “Kent” VanWinkle of the home; two sons, Kevin Richey and wife, Sarah of Wichita, Kan., and Nicholas Thomas of Mount Pleasant, Iowa; stepdaughter, Darline VanWinkle of Springfield, Mo.; four grandchildren, Kaitlynn and Konnor Richey, Ivy Peterson, and Arianna Jackson; two brothers, Kenny Richey and wife, Janet, and Brian Richey and wife, Chris, all of Wichita, Kan.; and three sisters, Evelyn Cheek and husband, Bill, Linda Diggs and husband, Bill, and Connie Wiss, all of Wichita, Kan.She was preceded in death by a son, Stephen Thomas; stepdaughter, Shawnda VanWinkle; her parents; two brothers, Gerald and Darrell Richey; and a brother-in-law, Doug Wiss.Visitation will be held from Noon to 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 26, 2023, at Bryant Funeral Home, with family to receive friends from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, April 27, 2023, at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend, with Pastor Larry Schumacher presiding. Interment will be in the Hillcrest Memorial Park in Great Bend. In lieu of flowers, memorials have been designated to the Shelly VanWinkle Expense Fund or the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.
