A Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) bridge replacement project on U.S. 183 in Kiowa County will start the week of July 14, conditions permitting.

The project will replace a bridge over the East Fork of Rattlesnake Creek about 12 miles north of the Comanche County line.

The bridge is being replaced as it is nearing the end of its useful life.

The bridge will be closed. Traffic will be guided around the construction by detour signage on a state route detour that includes U.S. 160, K-34 and U.S. 54.

Crews hope to be finished by early 2026, conditions permitting.

Klaver Construction, based in Wichita, is the primary contractor for the $2 million project.

Barton CC students named to President’s List for spring 2025

Recent warming temperatures and wet weather patterns have created ideal conditions for mosquitoes, said Kansas State University entomologist Raymond Cloyd.&nbsp;

“There are a lot of situations (near the home) where standing water is around,” he said. “We need to be aware of mosquitoes.”&nbsp;

Cloyd suggests clearing out the breeding environments used by mosquitoes to help mitigate their numbers near homes.&nbsp;

“The way we approach mosquito management is source reduction, that is, remove all stagnant water from bird baths, old tires, wheelbarrows, or anything that holds water for an extended period of time,” he said.&nbsp;

Other ways to get rid of mosquito breeding grounds, according to the K-State Research and Extension publication,&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://bookstore.ksre.ksu.edu/pubs/mosquitoes-and-west-nile-virus_MF2571.pdf">Pests That Affect Human Health: Mosquitoes and West Nile Virus</a>: &nbsp;

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Eliminate artificial water-holding containers. If that is not possible, empty buckets, cans, bottles, used tires and other containers at least once a week. &nbsp; ·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Fill or drain tree holes, stumps and puddles. &nbsp; ·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Irrigate gardens and lawns carefully to prevent water standing for more than a few days.  &nbsp;·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Check for water trapped in plastic covers on boats and swimming pools. &nbsp; ·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Make sure rain gutters are clean and do not hold water.  &nbsp;

People can also use a wide variety of repellents to lessen the presence of female mosquitoes during the times they’re most active, according to Cloyd. &nbsp;

“If you're going to be out at dusk and dawn, spray your body with a repellent such as DEET, Picaridin or IR3535,” he said. &nbsp;

Permethrin acts as another form of female mosquito control that affects them directly, but it must be applied properly to ensure human safety.&nbsp;

“Permethrin is an insecticide, but you don't spray it on your skin,” Cloyd said. “You spray it just on your clothing. When you come back inside take a shower (after application).”&nbsp;

Mosquito management can also occur during the early phases of the insect’s life cycle using a larvicide in the form of mosquito dunks or bits.&nbsp;

“You can put mosquito dunks and bits in water to kill mosquitos in the larval stage,” Cloyd said. They're completely harmless to pets and fish; all they kill is mosquito larva. So if you have a pond that's not agitated or a bird bath you don't want to change, you can throw in these mosquito dunks or bits. They'll eat it then they’ll die.”&nbsp;

He added: “Dunks and bits are stomach poisons that contain the active ingredient,&nbsp;Bacillus thuringienesis (subspecies&nbsp;kurstaki, or Btk).&nbsp;Btk&nbsp;is a soil-borne bacterium that only kills mosquito larvae. It will manage mosquito larval populations for one to four weeks after application.”&nbsp;

 </figure>Recent warming temperatures and wet weather patterns have created ideal conditions for mosquitoes, said Kansas State University entomologist Raymond Cloyd.&nbsp;“There are a lot of situations (near the home) where standing water is around,” he said. “We need to be aware of mosquitoes.”&nbsp;Cloyd suggests clearing out the breeding environments used by mosquitoes to help mitigate their numbers near homes.&nbsp;“The way we approach mosquito management is source reduction, that is, remove all stagnant water from bird baths, old tires, wheelbarrows, or anything that holds water for an extended period of time,” he said.&nbsp;Other ways to get rid of mosquito breeding grounds, according to the K-State Research and Extension publication,&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://bookstore.ksre.ksu.edu/pubs/mosquitoes-and-west-nile-virus_MF2571.pdf">Pests That Affect Human Health: Mosquitoes and West Nile Virus</a>: &nbsp;·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Eliminate artificial water-holding containers. If that is not possible, empty buckets, cans, bottles, used tires and other containers at least once a week. &nbsp; ·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Fill or drain tree holes, stumps and puddles. &nbsp; ·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Irrigate gardens and lawns carefully to prevent water standing for more than a few days.  &nbsp;·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Check for water trapped in plastic covers on boats and swimming pools. &nbsp; ·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Make sure rain gutters are clean and do not hold water.  &nbsp;People can also use a wide variety of repellents to lessen the presence of female mosquitoes during the times they’re most active, according to Cloyd. &nbsp;“If you're going to be out at dusk and dawn, spray your body with a repellent such as DEET, Picaridin or IR3535,” he said. &nbsp;Permethrin acts as another form of female mosquito control that affects them directly, but it must be applied properly to ensure human safety.&nbsp;“Permethrin is an insecticide, but you don't spray it on your skin,” Cloyd said. “You spray it just on your clothing. When you come back inside take a shower (after application).”&nbsp;Mosquito management can also occur during the early phases of the insect’s life cycle using a larvicide in the form of mosquito dunks or bits.&nbsp;“You can put mosquito dunks and bits in water to kill mosquitos in the larval stage,” Cloyd said. They're completely harmless to pets and fish; all they kill is mosquito larva. So if you have a pond that's not agitated or a bird bath you don't want to change, you can throw in these mosquito dunks or bits. They'll eat it then they’ll die.”&nbsp;He added: “Dunks and bits are stomach poisons that contain the active ingredient,&nbsp;Bacillus thuringienesis (subspecies&nbsp;kurstaki, or Btk).&nbsp;Btk&nbsp;is a soil-borne bacterium that only kills mosquito larvae. Kansas Tourism announced that more than 230 tourism attractions across the state are participating in the 2025 Sunflower Summer program. The lineup includes something for every interest and region of the state —&nbsp; museums and historic sites, zoos, arboretums, art centers and more.

“With such a wide variety of exceptional attractions participating this year, Sunflower Summer continues to open doors for Kansas families to explore and connect with every corner of our state,”&nbsp;Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of Commerce David Toland said. “This program not only creates unforgettable memories for students and parents — it also fuels local economies by drawing visitors to main streets, museums and hidden gems across Kansas.”&nbsp;

The 2025 Sunflower Summer program will run from July 12 to August 3. During this period, eligible students and one accompanying adult are granted free one-time access to each participating attraction, once per season. Passes can be claimed through the free Sunflower Summer app and redeemed at the attraction upon arrival. Kansas students from pre-K through 12th grade — including those in public, private and homeschool settings — are eligible to participate. The program is exclusively available to Kansas residents.

In late May, Central Kansas Community Corrections released a Request For
Proposal (RFP) to purchase a new, used or program mid-size or SUV vehicle. With
no submissions, CKCC Director Brooke Haulmark and her staff were authorized to
search locally for a vehicle. 

Haulmark said one vehicle was found at Marmie
Ford that met the criteria.


"Last year we sold a 2007 Pontiac," said Haulmark. "We traded in a Malibu and gained a Ford Escape and a Chrysler. We still have a 2013 Malibu that we would maybe like to sell in the future, but we want to see how it works out."

CKCC covers 4,000 square miles throughout the 20th Judicial
District.


With funding coming from the Kansas Department of Corrections, the vehicle had
to meet budget parameters as well as the RFP requirements of a 2018 vehicle or
newer with less than 50,000 miles. 
The Barton County Commission approved the $29,400 purchase from Marmie Ford for a 2024

The building was purchased in 2014 with its current owners intending to turn
the upper floors into an events center that could accommodate up to 300 patrons
for weddings, corporate events and other gatherings. In a social media post,
the owners said after more than a decade of “exploring, planning and investing
in its future” they made the decision to list the property for sale.


In 2021, renovations began on the outside, thanks in part to the Barton County Façade
Improvement program. In 2023, the owners won the $50,000 grand prize in Great
Bend Economic Development’s Ignite Rural Business Competition. The owners
stated grant funds have been fully repaid and they plan to include the
architectural plans for the renovations with the sale of the property.

The Great Bend Chamber of Commerce hosted a Ribbon Cutting on Friday, June 13 to celebrate the opening of Discount Bins, a new bin store located at 1015 10th Street in Great Bend.

While bin stores have already gained popularity in the area, Discount Bins brings its own take on the treasure-hunt shopping experience. Headquartered in Arizona, the company now operates 10 stores across three states, with Great Bend being one of its newest locations. Each week, bins are filled with a fresh assortment of brand-name products, electronics, household goods, toys, tools, and more—all offered at drastically reduced prices.

On Fridays, when the bins are fully restocked, all items are $15. Prices then drop daily—$10 on Saturday, $5 on Sunday, $3 on Monday, $2 on Tuesday, and just $1 on Wednesday. The store is closed on Thursdays to allow for restocking and preparation for the week ahead.

From Great Bend Economic Development...

The Board of Directors of Great Bend Economic Development (GBED) announced the upcoming departure of President Sara Arnberger, who will be stepping down in mid-July after five years of leadership.

During her tenure, Arnberger led GBED through a period of progress, transforming the organization into an engine for community and economic development.

“Through Sara’s leadership, GBED has redefined what is possible for Great Bend,” said Paul Snapp, Chairman of the GBED Board. “Her efforts resulted in a stronger business community, a more vibrant downtown, and a renewed sense of possibility across our city.”

Under Arnberger’s guidance, GBED launched a downtown loft grant program that will deliver 34 new living units, led initiatives to expand childcare capacity, and secured major funding for the upcoming Innovation Center. Also securing more than $8 million in outside grants to the region and helped recruit both new businesses and resources to support local entrepreneurs.

“She’s been a tireless champion for Great Bend,” Snapp continued. “She helped GBED to build partnerships at every level—from small business owners to state leaders—and ensured our community was always part of the bigger conversation.”

Other notable achievements include the launch of the IGNITE rural business program, the disbursement of over $2 million in revolving loan funds to area businesses, and the creation of business training programs that have supported the growth of emerging entrepreneurs.

Community events like Fridays on Forest and the Big Bend Bash have become staples, adding energy and connection to the heart of the city. Arnberger also helped establish Great Bend’s historic district and advance efforts for downtown streetscape revitalization. Projects now nearing the finish line—including a multi-million dollar STAR Bond project, new hotel development, several new restaurant ventures, and a new retail development—are expected to continue fueling momentum in the months and years ahead.

In reflecting on her departure, Arnberger shared, “This has been one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever made. I love this community, and I love what I’ve been able to create with the help of our GBED team. At this point in my life, I need to prioritize more time with my family. That said, I’m incredibly optimistic about what’s next for GBED and for Great Bend.”

She added, “With so many major projects already underway, the next leader is walking into a role rich with opportunity. The foundation we’ve built together is solid—and the best is yet to come.”

Arnberger expressed deep appreciation for the GBED board, City Council members, community partners, and the many supporters who have contributed to the organization’s success. 

“This has truly been the role of a lifetime. I’m so thankful for the trust and collaboration that made the last five years possible.”

Though stepping down from her formal position, Arnberger and her family will remain in Great Bend. 

“We’re staying right here,” she said. “This is our home, and I’ll continue to be a loud and proud advocate for its continued growth.”

The GBED Board will launch an immediate search for the next president and is committed to ensuring a smooth and strategic leadership transition.

“As a board, we are filled with gratitude for all that Sara has accomplished,” said Snapp. “And we’re equally excited for the future. Great Bend is positioned for continued growth, and we look forward to welcoming a new leader who will build on this momentum.”

This year marks the 10th anniversary of Russell and Debbie Snyder's Fireworks for Less, located at 2100 Main, which has grown from a bold leap of faith into a local tradition.

The journey began in 2015 when Russell and Debbie, purchased the building at 2100 Main to launch Windshields for Less, their auto glass repair business. Fueled by their American pride and passion for the Fourth of July, they envisioned a seasonal fireworks stand to share that joy with their community. After months of planning, Fireworks for Less opened its first season on June 27, 2016, inside the windshield shop spanning only 2,000 square feet.&nbsp;

Over the past decade, Fireworks for Less now boasts a 4,000-square-foot shopping space in air conditioned comfort. The Snyders have expanded their inventory to nearly 1,000 different products, including over 75 unique 500-gram cakes and more than 50 varieties of artillery shells! 

“Every year, we push to outdo ourselves,” Russell said. “We scout new products,&nbsp;&nbsp;new vendors, and listen to what our customers want.”

The stand operates from June 27 to July 4, open daily from 8 a.m. to midnight. Customer perks at Fireworks for less include free bottled water while you shop and free 9” punks with your fireworks purchase.&nbsp;

“We wouldn’t be where we are today if it weren’t for our family, friends and customers. We’re so grateful for them,” Debbie said. “Our family and friends work tirelessly year after year—stocking shelves, running the register, hauling boxes, dumping trash, retrieving carts and anything else asked of them to keep the flow going”. 

Their children, Brayden and Brylee, have grown up with the stand. 

“Brayden’s our go-to for helping customers pick the perfect artillery shell, and Brylee’s our sparkler queen,” Russell said proudly.&nbsp;

“The past decade has brought its fair share of challenges and learning curves but Great Bend's enthusiasm is undeniable and we knew we found something special”, Russell said. 

"Our customs are the heart of Fireworks for Less,” Debbie said. “For 10 years, our customers come back sharing their traditions and trusting us to light up their celebrations. We’ve seen families create memories, couples mark milestones, and kids pick their first sparkler. It’s a privilege and an honor to be part of those special moments!”

To celebrate their 10th anniversary at Fireworks for Less, the Snyders are giving away two $500 shopping sprees, they will have live radio remotes and daily specials. Details can all be found on their Facebook page.

For now, they’re waiting to kick off their 10th year in business for the 2025 season on June 27.
