One man is in custody following an active-shooter call in Great Bend Thursday evening. Law enforcement was initially dispatched to the area just west of 24th and Harrison in Great Bend. The reporting party reported hearing at least seven shots coming from the residence on the north side of 24th Street. The suspect was eventually taken into custody shortly after 9 p.m.
“There were some kids standing out in the driveway, and I was talking to them to see if they knew what was going on,” said a neighbor, who wishes to remain anonymous. “A cop yelled at us and told us, ‘Everybody back inside.’ That was a house down from 24th Street on Polk.”
Law enforcement officers from the Great Bend Police Department and Barton County Sheriff’s Office saturated the area, blocking traffic for several blocks on 24th Street. Great Bend Fire and EMS stood by on a side street.
“Guys were drawing AR-15s, the neighbors were talking about shots fired and drones overhead,” the neighbor said. “Radio chatter had a guy running through the field.”
Video from another neighbor showed a male individual dancing in the front yard of the residence in question before being approached by law enforcement officers and taken into custody.
This is a developing story. Check back for more details as they become available.
