This is day 10 of the Kansas Wheat Harvest Reports, brought to you by the Kansas Wheat Commission, Kansas Association of Wheat Growers, Kansas Grain and Feed Association and the Kansas Cooperative Council.

Reports from western Kansas paint a mixed picture, with yields ranging from slightly below average to above average depending on location and weather patterns. While quality was generally strong—test weights held up well and protein levels were respectable—drought stress, late rains and equipment breakdowns impacted both yield and progress. Farmers highlighted the importance of variety selection and residue management.

Gary Millershaski, who farms in Kearny County, reported that this year’s yields have been average to above average. Test weights have been respectable, slightly above average, just dropping off slightly with scattered showers in the area at the tail-end of harvest. They started cutting wheat on June 23 and finished up on Monday of this week, with the exception of one field that got rain and has kept them out for a few days. Millershaski expressed some disappointment with protein levels, which averaged 10.5 to 12 percent. Overall, the harvest was marked by a multitude of equipment breakdowns, which significantly slowed progress. However, he noted that the KS Dallas variety performed particularly well this year and he will be paying attention to Grain Craft’s “Preferred Variety List” when selecting next year’s varieties.

Eric Sperber, GM/CEO at Cornerstone Ag in Colby, estimates that harvest, which began on June 21, is about 80 to 85 percent complete in the area. He reported that their volume will likely be down 35 to 40 percent from their five year average, but despite less volume, the quality is very good. Test weights are holding up, even with showers on mature wheat, at 58 to 60 pounds per bushel. Protein is averaging in the upper 12s, ranging from 8 to 16 percent.

He reported that yields have been averaging about 35 bushels per acre, which is slightly below average. Conditions were dry during drilling last fall, and area acres were down. Drought conditions continued up until Memorial weekend, so even the wheat that emerged last fall and looked good in April ran out of gas by the time rains moved into the area. This is especially true for areas to the north of Colby, while areas to the south received a bit more moisture.

“It has been a weird harvest,” Sperber said. “It seems like the entire state matured at the same time.” He added that wheat in the Colby area ripened before custom harvest crews arrived, causing the first week of harvest to progress more slowly than usual.

Chris Tanner, who farms in Norton County, wrapped up wheat harvest on July 9, after two weeks of hit and miss rains held up harvest in his area. What started out as good test weights and yields on June 23, ended up with fields being insurance adjusted and won't be harvested because of weed pressure and disappointing test weights. Grainfield has been a consistent variety on his farm over the past several years, and KS Bill Snyder is a new variety that yielded very well.

Last fall, the crop emerged with an excellent stand, but the lack of winter precipitation and several cold snaps left the wheat in poor condition coming out of dormancy. A dry spring and a string of hot days further stressed the crop. Tanner said it was “a day away from death in early June” when it finally caught some rain. “With that small amount of rain, it’s surprising we had any wheat at all this year,” he said.&nbsp;

The fallow fields were averaging in the 40s to 70s for yields, and the continuous fields were averaging in the mid 20s before the harvest rains came through. A recent downpour—2 inches in just 20 minutes—highlighted the importance of wheat residue left on the soil. As Tanner put it, “There is value to wheat beyond the grain.”

Day 10, Kansas Wheat Harvest Report

After serving 20 years in the Army, Barton graduate Timothy Sifuentes was ready for the next chapter of his life, and Barton Community College at Grandview Plaza’s program helped him on his journey to complete OSHA certifications and an associate degree in Emergency Management/Homeland Security.

While already employed as a safety professional, Sifuentes wanted to take his credentials and knowledge base to another level.&nbsp;

“I felt obligated to continue my studies, and my focus on a career in the safety field worked out well for me as Barton offers OSHA classes and an Emergency Management/Homeland Security degree,” he said.&nbsp;

The Fort Riley LSEC program was also a benefit to him as he was able to complete most general education classes for the degree at no cost.

“The Fort Riley community is supported by Barton’s excellent professors and fantastic timetable,” he said.

Sifuentes received his associate of applied science in Emergency Management/Homeland Security in December, and he credits Barton’s Grandview Plaza program, which offers select OSHA classes for active-duty soldiers, their dependents, veterans, and Department of Defense employees at no cost, with getting him certifications as well as mitigating elective credit hours for the EMHS degree.

While Barton’s location at Grandview Plaza is a satellite campus there is also a site on-base at Fort Riley. &nbsp;Sifuentes said the whole team of support staff on base and at Grandview Plaza was a great benefit to him.

“My advisor was one of the best academic advisors I have ever worked with, in my honest opinion,” he said.

Sifuentes has no plans of stopping. He is currently working on his bachelor’s degree in Emergency Management/Homeland Security.

“I work in the safety industry currently, and I want to expand my experience, education, and skill set,” he said. “My ultimate objective is to pass my Certified Safety Professional exam and submit my application to the Board of CSPs.”

Sifuentes encourages others eligible to take advantage of Barton’s opportunities.

“For people who want to advance their careers and professional growth, Barton is a fantastic place to start,” he said.

Grand opening for new thrift store in Great Bend

The City of Great Bend has been participating in a nationwide class
action lawsuit against manufacturers of PFAS chemicals. Some of the claims have
been settled and Great Bend’s share in that settlement totals a little over
$1.3 million to be paid out over time. One payment has already been received, and
another is expected in September. 

The remaining amounts are currently set to be
paid out in annual payments through June 2033.
Great Bend has the opportunity to accelerate those payments and receive the
total amount left this year, discounted to present value and minus a 3.5%
transaction fee. Great Bend City Attorney Allen Glendenning said this would be
accomplished by selling the income stream to an investment banking firm.


"It looks to me overall it probably will be a good deal," said Glendenning. "It gives you certainty on getting this amount of the money so there's no risk that they will stop making the payments along the way."&nbsp;

The amount to be paid to Great Bend after the September payment will be a
little over $475,000. The final discount rate is being negotiated by the
attorneys in the lawsuit. Using an estimated 9.7% rate, the accelerated payment
would be approximately $430,000, minus attorney fees.

action lawsuit against manufacturers of PFAS chemicals. Some of the claims have
been settled and Great Bend’s share in that settlement totals a little over
$1.3 million to be paid out over time. One payment has already been received, and
another is expected in September. The remaining amounts are currently set to be
paid out in annual payments through June 2033.
Great Bend has the opportunity to accelerate those payments and receive the
total amount left this year, discounted to present value and minus a 3.5%
transaction fee. Great Bend City Attorney Allen Glendenning said this would be
accomplished by selling the income stream to an investment banking firm.
"It looks to me overall it probably will be a good deal," said Glendenning. "It gives you certainty on getting this amount of the money so there's no risk that they will stop making the payments along the way."&nbsp;The amount to be paid to Great Bend after the September payment will be a
little over $475,000. The final discount rate is being negotiated by the
attorneys in the lawsuit. Using an estimated 9.7% rate, the accelerated payment
would be approximately $430,000, minus attorney fees.

Ellinwood Hospital and Clinic welcomes Brooke Churchill, PTA, to its Physical Therapy team. She brings a passion for rehabilitation and community care home to Ellinwood.

In today’s fast-paced world, making time for exercise can be a challenge. However, growing research suggests that intense exercise—even in shorter bursts—can offer significant physical and mental health benefits. From improving cardiovascular health to boosting brain function, intense workouts are proving to be one of the most efficient ways to elevate overall well-being.

High-intensity exercise such as interval training or vigorous strength workouts has been linked to improved heart health and better metabolic function. According to the American Heart Association engaging in vigorous physical activity for just 75 minutes per week can reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke and hypertension.

Unlike moderate exercise, intense workouts push the body to operate at or near its maximum capacity, increasing the heart rate and stimulating the muscles in a shorter period of time. This leads to greater calorie burn both during and after the workout, known as the “afterburn effect” or excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC). As a result, intense exercise is an efficient way to support weight loss and improve metabolic health, particularly for those with limited time.

Intense resistance and body weight training not only build muscle but also improve muscular endurance and bone density. This is especially crucial as we age, when muscle mass naturally declines. KOERNER: The power of intense exercise

The new clinic in St. John brings the number of Heart of Kansas Family Health Care locations to four. The others are in Great Bend, Larned and Stafford.

“The St. John site is currently operating on a limited basis but it should be in full swing by sometime this summer,” said Brett Middleton, Heart of Kansas chief executive officer. “We determined that a significant number of local and area residents need this clinic and our staff wanted to accommodate them.

“While the new clinic is open only one day a week for now, we will increase access and add providers in the months ahead,” Middleton noted. “Heart of Kansas understands the importance of having primary-care services close to home.”

The idea for opening a clinic in St. John started with Arika Fanshier, nurse practitioner, who is seeing patients there now.

“When the building at 609 E. 1st became available, we began talking about the possibility of a St. John location,” Middleton recalled. “Arika was instrumental in these discussions and helped us make this happen.”

Other providers that will join the team are Richard Aballay, MD, who cares for patients in the Larned clinic; he will travel to St. John one day a week. Jackie Reed, nurse practitioner, also will be in the clinic two days a week.

In addition, Madison Hanzlick, nurse practitioner, will be in St. John Thursdays and Fridays, and Great Bend Mondays and Tuesdays.

“We look forward to being fully staffed with this great group of professional and compassionate providers,” Middleton said. “They offer family-medicine services, and monitor chronic conditions such as heart disease and diabetes. Behavioral-health providers also will be available.”

Middleton noted that he appreciates the support of the St. John City Council and Stafford County Commission. “They helped us smooth the way for the opening of the clinic.”

The St. John District Hospital Endowment Foundation also “was extremely supportive in helping us get the doors open,” Middleton added. “They even offered us some gently used equipment that was readily available and bought us an electric exam table.

“This type of community support is necessary in this type of endeavor. Everyone involved has our heartfelt gratitude.”

The services at Heart of Kansas are offered on a sliding-fee scale. Middleton encourages patients to work with the Heart of Kansas staff to determine if they qualify for the discounted rates.

“This sliding scale oftentimes is available to older patients on a limited income,” Middleton noted. “They have worked and paid their taxes, and have every right to check into the possibility of being eligible for lower costs.”

The clinic serves patients of all ages who are insured, uninsured and under-insured; the phone number in St. John is 620-377-5031.

Heart of Kansas Family Health Care is a Federally Qualified Health Center, which allows it to be a safety net for patients who are uninsured or underinsured. Its professional providers also welcome those with insurance at the Great Bend, Larned and Stafford locations. Heart of Kansas is open to everyone.

With the recent resignation of the City of Great Bend’s Public Works
Director Jason Cauley, the city is exploring with restructuring the department
by dividing it into two separate entities: the Public Works Department and the
Utilities Department. 

City Administrator Logan Burns said splitting the
department could allow for more focused leadership in each area, with directors
possessing specialized knowledge in their respective fields – namely, streets
and infrastructure for Public Works, and water and sewer for Utilities.


"This is a new approach," said Burns. "This is what the City of Hays does. It's been working out for them. I know there are several other cities that are doing it. I believe around the Maize area as well. If this turns out where we don't like it, we can always go back."

Burns said Garden City and McPherson are also looking for similar positions and
are offering more compensation. Creating a second department for Great Bend will
require an additional $60,000 to be budgeted within the General Fund.


Councilmember Alan Moeder said the hiring process may be more manageable by
seeking candidates with specific skill sets rather than one individual with broad
expertise across multiple areas.


"I just think it's a lot of work for one person to do," said Moeder. "I think Jason got burned out a little bit. I think we need to split it so we don't have that issue of being burned out. That's a lot to take care of for one person."

The City Council approved the ordinance establishing a utilities department and
the position of Director of Utilities. Applications will be accepted until July
22, interviews will be the following week and the city hopes to
make an appointment on Aug. 4.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;

Great Bend to split Public Works Director roles, taking applications

The Larned Police Department announced they received Gold in the 2025 Community Traffic Safety Awards.

Throughout 2024, the Larned department promoted traffic safety across the community. Efforts included:

• High-visibility traffic enforcement • Child car seat installations • Bicycle safety programs • Community education booths • Teen traffic safety education • Continued officer training in traffic safety initiatives

Larned Police Dept. honored for community traffic safety

After announcing her resignation in June, Great Bend Economic
Development Director Sara Arnberger presented her Economic Development report
for the last time in front of the Great Bend City Council at Monday’s meeting.
Arnberger said she was fortunate to lead a wide range of initiatives aimed at
building a stronger and more vibrant Great Bend.


"This is my last council meeting addressing you all," said Arnberger. "I just want to say thank you for all of the support. It's been absolutely wonderful working with all of you. I love Great Bend. I love this role. I truly mean thank you."

Arnberger started as Economic Development Director in August 2020. She served
as the area manager for The Buckle retail store in Hutchinson prior to moving
back to her hometown of Great Bend. She was the second director for the
organization that started in 2020, replacing Jessica Milsap.


Arnberger said she wants to prioritize more time with her family as she
begins a new chapter in her life.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;
