The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) have issued a public health advisory due to blue-green algae.

The water recreation season in Kansas officially runs from April 1 to Oct. 31, as do the Harmful Algae Blooms (HAB) response program's active operations. Kansans should remain vigilant while engaging in activities taking place in or on the water, such as swimming, boating, and fishing.

A HAB may look like foam, scum or paint floating on the water and be colored blue, bright green, brown or red. Blooms can develop rapidly; if the water appears suspicious or there is decaying algae on the shore, avoid contact and keep dogs away. These toxins can be absorbed by ingestion, inhalation of aerosols and even skin contact. Symptoms vary depending upon the type of exposure (e.g., direct contact, ingestion, inhalation) but can include rash, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, sore throat, and headache.

Barton healthcare students place in international competition

PRATT COUNTY —One person died in an accident just after 9a.m. Friday in Pratt County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2015 Buick Encore driven by&nbsp;Prosser, Riley Cheyenne&nbsp;Prosser, 21, Pratt, was Eastbound on SW 50th Street.&nbsp; A 1962 Chevy Truck driven by Christopher Michael&nbsp; Sanders, 35, Pratt, was northbound on SW 20th Avenue. Both vehicles entered the intersection at the same time and collided.&nbsp;

Prosser was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to&nbsp;Larrison's Mortuary. EMS transported Sanders to&nbsp;Ascension via Christi St. Francis and a passenger in the truck identified as Jorden Samuel&nbsp;House, 18, Pratt, to Pratt Regional Medical Center. All three were not wearing seat belts, according to the KHP.

Kansas woman dead, 2 injured after pickup, SUV crash

On Tuesday morning, Barton County Commissioners approved a three-party agreement with Kirkham Michael &amp; Associates and the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) for inspection services on the High-Risk Rural Roads Signing Project covering the southwest quadrant of the county.

Under the agreement, the Ellsworth-based engineering firm will provide an on-site inspector to monitor and document the installation of no-passing pennants (triangular yellow road signs) by the construction contractor. KDOT will cover 100% of participating costs up to an upper compensation limit of $57,116.93, meaning no direct cost to Barton County unless expenses exceed this limit or for non-participating costs, County Engineer Barry McManaman said.

This marks the third and final phase of this project, which also included design previously conducted by Kirkham Michael and the construction, which was green-lighted last week. The total cost was around $160,000, under the $171,000 maximum allowed by KDOT.

The state is covering the entire cost of the work, McManaman said.

The HRRR project taps Federal Highway Administration funds in an effort aimed at enhancing safety and reducing crash rates.

🎤 Forward Ever: Part 4: Kris Munsch: Getting bank ready

It doesn’t matter if an 8-person team is all boys, all girls or coed for the upcoming Kick the Habit Kickball Tournament sponsored by Barton County Youth Crew.

Participants must be in grades 6-12; those who graduated from high school in May also are eligible. Each team, which can be a mix of ages, is encouraged to select a team captain and an appropriate name.

The tournament is set for 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 8 at the Great Bend Sports Complex, 41 McKinley. There is no entry fee but registration is required; there is no charge for spectators.

“We have started handing out cards with this basic information to individuals, churches, businesses and other entities,” said Tyler Morton, Juvenile Services prevention advocate. “There also will be posts on social media but those with traditional bulletin boards are asked to participate too.”

The kickball tournament originated in 2022 with Youth Crew members teaming up with the Barton County Health Department.

“The goal was to host an event to raise awareness about the dangers of using tobacco and encourage tobacco cessation,” Morton said. “The health department is graciously donating funds for water bottles, along with stickers that share positive affirmations that personalize the bottles.”

Rise Up, a Central Kansas Partnership task force, is supplying the referees; County Attorney J. Colin Reynolds is sponsoring the T-shirts; and BJ Wooding, Barton County cartographer, made the banners.

Shane Sandberg, Great Bend Rec sports director, also is playing a big role, Morton said.

“Shane helped us with all the logistics of finding the right time and place for the tournament,” he explained. “He also will help with the team brackets. We can’t thank everyone enough for all their efforts in supporting this popular event.

“Our Youth Crew planning committee members, who meet weekly, are working hard to make this an educational and fun event. But they know this tournament cannot be a success without the support of the community.”

Youth Crew hosted Kick the Habit tournaments in 2022 and 2023. “These were our largest events in those years, attracting more than 200 attendees,” Morton said.

The logistics didn’t gel in 2024 when organizers decided to change from a spring tournament to one in the summer to attract more participants.

Kick the Habit Kickball Tournament set for Aug. 8 in Great Bend

Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of Commerce David Toland announced the Department of Commerce has awarded $4.1 million through the Community Service Tax Credit Program (CSP) to support significant fundraising efforts for 30 non-profit organizations across the state.

“Strong, vibrant communities are what draw new businesses, visitors and potential residents to Kansas,”&nbsp;Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of Commerce David Toland said.&nbsp;“CSP allows locally led initiatives to attract additional capital support – and further expand the economic opportunities in their communities.”

The Community Service Tax Credit Program provides an opportunity for non-profit organizations and public healthcare entities to improve their ability to undertake major capital campaigns involving community service, non-governmental crime prevention, youth apprenticeship and technical training, and healthcare services.

Under the program, the state authorizes nonprofit organizations to offer tax credits to donors that make contributions towards approved projects. Organizations in rural areas with populations less than 15,000 can receive a 70% credit, while communities with more than 15,000 population can receive a 50% credit.

Commerce awards $4.1 million in tax credits to spur revitalization

On Thursday, July 10, at about 9 a.m. Barton County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to an injury accident at the intersection of K-96 highway and 30 Avenue, just northwest of the city of Great Bend. Upon arrival, deputies located a two-vehicle accident involving a truck tractor / trailer combination loaded with hay and a pickup truck.

Investigation at the scene indicates that the 2007 Freightliner truck operated by Heinrich Roets, age 23 of Ellinwood, was slowing to make a right hand turn onto 30 Avenue when a 2000 Dodge pickup truck operated by Gavin Gisick, age 20 of Great Bend, struck the rear of the trailer at a high rate of speed.

Due to the heavy front-end damage on the pickup, Gisick was pinned in the vehicle for a short period of time and extricated by the Great Bend Fire Department and EMS Service. He was transported to The University of Kansas Health System - Great Bend Campus with serious injuries. He was later flown to a Wichita area hospital. The driver of the truck was not injured. 

K-96 was closed for about one hour while Sheriff's Office personnel investigated the accident.

This is day 11 of the Kansas Wheat Harvest Reports, brought to you by the Kansas Wheat Commission, Kansas Association of Wheat Growers, Kansas Grain and Feed Association and the Kansas Cooperative Council.

Despite early drought, uneven stands and losses to wheat streak mosaic virus, some farmers are reporting better than expected yields, with test weights and protein levels starting strong before tapering off due to late rains. Overall, the 2025 season has been an improvement over recent years.

Stan Remington, CEO of Frontier Ag, described this year’s wheat harvest as average overall, though results varied across their trade territory, which stretches from the Colorado border to Ogallah along I-70, and from the Nebraska line south to Ransom and Utica along Highway 4. With harvest now about 90 percent complete in their territory, Remington noted that the 2025 season stands out as above average when compared to the past few years.

In the northwest corner of the state, yields came in a little lower than expected. Fields north of Highway 24 also struggled, with several producers reporting below-average performance. Meanwhile, the Ness County area saw a stronger crop. As with most years, weather conditions made all the difference.

One of the bigger challenges this year came from wheat streak mosaic virus, which showed up more frequently along the I-70 corridor. These areas saw some of the most disappointing harvest results across Frontier Ag’s footprint, with Oakley and locations to the east experiencing the most severe impact from the virus. The presence of the virus in concentrated pockets dragged down yields.

Protein levels were also varied across the region. Weather conditions earlier in the growing season took a toll on quality in some areas. In addition, timing of spring rains played a key role. Fields that missed those critical windows saw reduced performance. Scattered showers during harvest also caused occasional delays, slowing progress in some locations.

Brian Linin, a farmer from Goodland, reports that harvest began on July 1 and his crew has about 10 days left. Linin, who farms alongside his dad and son, says their wheat is better than it looked, averaging above 50 bushels per acre so far, much better than last year and slightly above average.&nbsp;

Last fall’s drought conditions forced the Linins to redrill some fields in early November, a decision that significantly improved both stand establishment and yields. In fact, fields drilled later in the season are outperforming the earlier-emerging wheat across the area.

Test weights have been strong, ranging from 58 to 61.5 pounds per bushel, while protein levels are above average, running between 13.5 and 14 percent. Linin reported that drought was the biggest challenge this season, adding, “If we had received rain a month earlier, yields would be so much better.”

“Wheat is an excellent crop for this area,” said Linin, emphasizing that it fits well into their rotation. The stubble left behind greatly benefits the soil and improves the subsequent crop, and with decent yields, wheat can be a good cash crop.

In Lane County, farmer Ron Suppes, who grows hard white wheat, says he’s about 98 percent done with harvest and is working to finish up the last bit between rain showers. He brought in his first load about two weeks ago.

Suppes says recent rains have knocked down test weights, which started out about 61 to 63 pounds per bushel but have since dropped to 57 to 58 pounds. Protein levels have also dropped, starting out at 12 to 12.5 percent and are now sitting closer to 11 percent.

He says one of the biggest challenges this season started last fall, when wheat was planted into very dry soil. That led to uneven stands and staggered maturity across his fields, making harvest more complicated. Suppes planted KS Big Bow, KS Silverado and KS Snow Fox this year, and says all three have held up well despite the season’s challenges.

Members of the Barton County Commission attended Thursday's special coordination meeting in St. John to discuss the long-running and contentious Quivira National Wildlife Refuge water impairment issue. The meeting was held at the Stafford County Annex Building, 210 E. Third.

Commissioners from Pawnee and Stafford counties were also planning on attending the meeting, organized by the Kansas Natural Resource Coalition. Also invited were representatives from senators Jerry Moran’s and Roger Marshall’s offices, Groundwater Management District 5 and the Kansas Department of Agriculture’s Kansas Division of Water Resources.

Officials from the refuge, managed by the U.S. Department of the Interior since the 1950s, have maintained that water use upstream has impaired flow in the wetland. The augmentation plan approved in 2013 was aimed at solving this.

However, Barton County Commission Chairperson Tricia Schlessiger said the KNRC believes this plan will hurt area farmers and communities, and that the refuge has failed to follow the plan, contributes to the shortfall it is experiencing now.

The KNRC sponsors, promotes, and engages in meaningful government-to-government participation between its member Western Kansas counties and federal and/or state executive branch agencies during administrative policymaking and actions.

The NWR is over 21,000 acres in Stafford County with around 6,000 acres of marshes and wetlands which are created by an extensive irrigation water control system of over 30 water units.

Barton Co. Commissioners discuss Quivira water issue

For some people, describing why they enjoy their career may be challenging, but for Barton alum Courtney Barton, it’s very easy.

“If you love working with children, I highly recommend this industry,” she said. “The connection you make with children in a learning environment is so rewarding because&nbsp;they have so much love to give. Instilling positivity and confidence in young children will prepare them for the rest of their lives. I wanted to become an early childhood educator because it gave me the chance to make a difference, not only in the children’s lives but for their families.”

Barton graduated in 2021 and immediately found a job working at the Child Development Center on campus as a Lead Care Provider and credits her time at Barton with getting her prepared for the workforce.

“Barton helped prepare me for my career by teaching in depth early childhood milestones and creative ways to help them reach those goals,” she said. "Learning age-appropriate development techniques has helped me interact with children of all ages at my job. I love sharing my knowledge with our student workers to help them develop the best way to care for the children.

The college being local was something that Barton said helped her feel comfortable as she left high school and embarked on her college journey.

“My Barton experience really brought me out of my shell. Whether it was teachers or classmates, I did feel included and welcomed by them,” she said. “I enjoyed working as a student worker on campus because I was able to balance work and school life. One of my favorite things about going to Barton was having it so close to home. It really made things easier for me."

Barton currently specializes in infant care at the CDC and thoroughly enjoys what she is doing right now, but eventually might pursue a bachelor’s degree.

Barton alum & Great Bend native thrives as early childhood educator

The Barton County Commission Tuesday morning approved a revised resolution establishing updated procurement policy and procedures for purchasing and sourcing. The action rescinds the previous resolution dating back to 2023.

“The new resolution aims to clarify purchasing guidelines for the county administrator and department heads, encouraging transparent and responsible spending of county funds,” said County Administrator Matt Patzner. The county has had such standards for over 40 years, but officially codified them in 2020.

“I think this is a good policy to amend,” said Commission Chairperson Tricia Schlessiger, District 4. “I think it will make it a little more user friendly for us if things come up,”

The only change was allowing the creation of a preferred vendor list that could be used if there are time or other constraints, Patzner said. Key aspects of the policy include:

These items will require commission approval.</li><li>Non-competitive procurement:&nbsp;Outlines specific circumstances where non-competitive procurement is permitted, including emergencies, single-source availability or for certain repairs up to $15,000.</li><li>Job order contracting:&nbsp;Details a procurement method for recurring maintenance, repair, alteration, renovation, remediation or minor construction.</li><li>Grant procurement:&nbsp;Specifies that procurement with grant funds must adhere to federal and state laws, grant guidelines and the county's procurement policy.</li><li>Publication and submission:&nbsp;Vendors can view solicitations and submit bids electronically through Vendor Registry, or via mail/courier.</li><li>Awarding bids:&nbsp;The county reserves the right to reject any and all bids and award to responsible contractors based on factors beyond just price, including integrity, past performance and financial resources.</li><li>Conflicts of Interest:&nbsp;Requires commissioners, the county administrator, department heads and vendors to disclose any potential conflicts of interest.</li>

The “Shark Tank” inspired competition in Barton County is getting set to
narrow down their contestants. The Ignite Rural Business competition, hosted by
Great Bend Economic Development, received 22 entries into this year’s event.

Arnberger said names of competitors making it to the next round will be
announced by the end of the week. 

Eventually, the top five participants will
advance to the final round that will include a “Shark Tank” style pitch to a
live audience and judges at the Crest Theater on Oct. 9. First
place will be awarded $50,000, 2nd place gets $30,000 and 3rd

narrow down their contestants. The Ignite Rural Business competition, hosted by
Great Bend Economic Development, received 22 entries into this year’s event.
Eco Devo Director Sara Arnberger said that is 22 entrepreneurs that are wanting
to start or advance their business ideas.

United Way of Central Kansas proudly announces and celebrates its 2025 Campaign Pacesetters—15 outstanding businesses whose generosity and commitment to community helped raise a remarkable $102,000, representing 45% of the total campaign.

“These businesses are not only leaders in their industries—they are champions for their communities,” said Charell Owings, Executive Director of UWCK. “Their generosity sets a powerful example of corporate philanthropy in action and allows us to continue addressing the most critical needs in Barton and Pawnee Counties.”

The 2025 Top Donor and Gold Overall Award recipient is First Kansas Bank, earning the top honor for the first time. Dillons earned the Silver Overall Award, and The University of Kansas Health System–Great Bend Campus received the Bronze Overall Award.

The remaining Pacesetter Companies, recognized for their outstanding workplace giving campaigns, are:

UWCK also extended heartfelt thanks and recognition with the Leadership Award to longtime Treasurer John Cross.

United Way of Central Kansas honors Pacesetter businesses

On a hot summer day, there is nothing better than a cool drink of clean water to quench one’s thirst. For cattle out on pasture, their need for clean, accessible water is important for good health, said the experts from Kansas State University’s Beef Cattle Institute on a recent Cattle Chat podcast.

“Cattle that are eating dry hay will need to consume more water than cows eating fresh grass, and if they are in a hot environment they’ll drink about twice as much water as cows in the winter,” K-State beef cattle nutritionist Philip Lancaster said.

For cattle out on pasture, their need for clean, accessible water is important for good health, said the experts from Kansas State University’s Beef Cattle Institute on a recent Cattle Chat podcast.“Cattle that are eating dry hay will need to consume more water than cows eating fresh grass, and if they are in a hot environment they’ll drink about twice as much water as cows in the winter,” K-State beef cattle nutritionist Philip Lancaster said.In the summer, Lancaster estimates the cows need to drink about two gallons of water for every 100 pounds of body weight. And adult cattle aren’t the only animals on pasture with a need for water.“Even though their diet is mainly milk, calves also need to drink water to help their rumen properly digest any foods they are starting to consume,” Lancaster said.Not only is it important to provide water access for cattle, but the quality of the water is key to good health, K-State veterinarian Bob Larson said.“Anytime cattle are not hydrated as well as they could be, they are suspectable to disease as in the case of pneumonia,” Larson said.One source of water for cattle on pastures is ponds.“When the water quality is important, it is best to keep the cattle out of the ponds by fencing them out and piping the water to a tank,” K-State Research and Extension fisheries specialist Joe Gerken said. “Having a pipe that runs through an earthen dam regulates the temperature so the cattle will want to drink more.”Another option is to grant the cattle limited access to the pond by fencing them out except for a gravel path to one part of the pond, Gerken said.“Depending on the herd size, generally speaking, this path is from 20-40 feet wide, and because it is gravel, the cattle won’t linger as long due to the way it feels on their hooves,” Gerken said.He also said the gravel keeps sediment from filling the pond.“With this system, the pond can be healthy, and the cattle can still get the benefits they need from it,” Gerken said.Alicia Boor is an Agriculture and Natural Resources agent in the Cottonwood District (which includes Barton and Ellis counties) for K-State Research and Extension.
