STAFFORD COUNTY—A Kansas teen died in an accident just after 7:30a.m. Monday in Stafford County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2000 Pontiac Bonneville driven by 16-year-old Shane Riley Sheets of St. John was&nbsp;eastbound in the 100 block of NE 20th Street. 

The car entered the north ditch and struck a tree. Sheets was pronounced dead at the scene and transported to Minnis Chapel. He was properly restrained at the time of the accident, according to the KHP.

USD 349 has counselors and staff&nbsp; available to meet with students and staff throughout the day and throughout the week.

From Great Bend speech and debate coach Kim Heath...

The sleek white Panther Activity Bus pulled to a stop just before 5 a.m. Saturday morning. A large group of sleepy but excited young Panthers had gathered outside GBHS for the two-hour trek to Garden City for the opening weekend of the debate season. Fourteen novice debaters loaded their laptops and file boxes onto the bus and prepared to face their first policy debate competitors from Garden City, Dodge City, and Liberal, Hugoton and Ottawa. While a thunderstorm battered the city of Great Bend, our young debaters were battering the competition out west. By 7 p.m. Saturday evening, the storms had passed, and the Panther debate team returned home with a total record of 16 wins and 5 losses, and five of the top six places.

2022-23 National Debate Topic “Resolved: The United States federal government should substantially increase its security cooperation with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization in one or more of the following areas: artificial intelligence, biotechnology, cybersecurity.”

The 2022-2023 National Debate Topic will have the students learning about emerging technologies and how these advances in artificial intelligence, bio-technology and cyber security may impact the United States’ involvement with NATO. The students will be researching how the world is rapidly changing and how the new technologies provide many risks and opportunities related to security for the United States and the other 29 NATO countries.

“The topic is very complicated, especially for the younger students. It really is almost two topics combined into one,” commented GBHS debate coach, Kim Heath. “The learning curve for understanding emerging tech AND global geo-politics has been pretty steep, and I am so proud of the debaters for the intense amount of work they have all put in during the first month of school.”

“Angels on their shoulders” Each team debated 5 rounds, but in the first two rounds, they received help from the experienced debaters. This style of tournament, known as an “angel on your shoulder” experience, allows the students to get a feel for the flow of a debate round on both the affirmative and negative side without the pressure of being judged.

Serving as angels for the Panther debaters were Seniors Alondra Alvarez, Maddix Pokorski, and Xanna Smith; Junior -- Thomas Henrikson; and Sophomores Analeah Ochs and Lea Nokes.

Coach Heath shared how: “Over and over again the debaters were commenting on how much they were learning from the older students. Not only did it help strengthen our team unity and morale, but the experienced debaters also provided invaluable help to our novices.”

After the two opening “angel” rounds, the novices competed in three rounds without help, and the experienced students became judges.

Panthers dominate Only four teams at the tournament posted a perfect 3-0 record on the day. And three of those teams were GBHS Panthers!

Freshmen, Ellie Damm and Kaylee Haag were undefeated and earned perfect speaker points. They defeated teams from Liberal, Ottawa and Dodge City on their way to a first place finish.

Senior, Gavin Hirsh and Freshman, Hannah Hopkins were runner-up. They won all their rounds beating teams from Ottawa, Hugoton and Garden City.

Freshmen, Rhys Froetschner and Quinton Heath also were undefeated and finished in third place. They were victorious in debates with Liberal, Garden City and Dodge City.

Sophomore, Anna Bitter and Freshman, Zachary Hart placed 5th overall. They beat Ottawa and Garden City but came up just short of defeating Liberal.

Sophomores, Ailey Williams and Danica Cline had a loss against Garden City, but came back with wins against a different Garden City team and a team from Dodge City to place 6th.

Sophomores, Jay Creamer and Junior, Theo Hopkinson - Smith finished in 9th place with wins over teams from Garden and Dodge and a loss to Liberal.

Keaton Kruckenberg and Jennifer Palacio beat a team from Liberal but lost their rounds against Ottawa and Garden City.

“Having our novices win so many rounds as they learn the activity was a great way to start out the season. I’m looking forward to a fantastic year,” Heath said. “Of course, I am excited to have so many individual awards, but seeing the squad work together and support each other was the best part of the tournament. I am so proud of our team.”

Halstead then the home meet Panther debate next travels to Halstead this Saturday, September 24, in a contest featuring both novice and open divisions. The squad will host their home tournament on October 1st at GBHS. Coach Heath welcomes anyone with an interest in debate, technology, or politics to volunteer as a judge.

“Judging debate may sound intimidating, but you really don’t need to have been a debater to be a good judge. One of the most important skills we teach is learning to adjust to your audience. An open mind, and a willingness to help the kids develop their speaking and listening skills is all it takes to be a great judge,” said Heath.

After working at a couple of other massage studios in Hays for the last three years, Jordan Winter opened Rebalance Massage, 2522 Vine, Ste. 2, Hays, last week. Winter, 25, is a certified massage therapist. He received his certification through the Fort Hays State University massage program. He offers various massage services, including therapeutic massage for problem areas, stretching, hot stone and cupping. 

He hopes to eventually carry ear candles and cups clients can use at home for treatment of hands and feet. Winter said the cups can help people who have plantar fasciitis.

Winter said he has found he really enjoys working in the massage field. 

"I feel really confident in what I do," he said. "People typically come back."

Winter is offering short tune-up massages for as little as $25. He said he hopes his service will complement the services offered next door at the walk-in chiropractor.

Winter said he thinks the studio is in a good location to take advantage of a lot of foot traffic.

As Winter is trying to get his studio off the ground, he is open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. seven days a week. Walk-ins are welcome. After working at a couple of other massage studios in Hays for the last three years, Jordan Winter opened Rebalance Massage, 2522 Vine, Ste. 2, Hays, last week. Great Bend native opens massage studio in Hays

The
drought monitor report as of Tuesday, September 13, indicates an ever-increasing
expansion of extreme and exceptional drought eastward toward Barton
County.&nbsp; Currently the outlook is past
grim for fall wheat planting in much of the state.&nbsp; The six to ten-day outlook (September 20 to 24)
indicates a 60 to 80% chance of above normal temperatures and normal to a 33 to
40% chance of below normal precipitation which isn’t much to begin with. &nbsp;The eight to fourteen-day outlook (September 22
to 28) indicates our area a 50 to 60% chance of above temperatures and 33 to
40% chance of below normal precipitation.&nbsp;

the general public.&nbsp; We will focus on
injury today but remember the health aspects – from long-term exposure to dust,
sun, and chemicals to mental health (agricultural producers have an extremely
high rate of suicide), there are many health concerns in the industry.&nbsp; For today, however, let’s focus on safety.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; There
is some variation on how dangerous farming is, in terms of fatalities, but it
ranks as one of the most dangerous occupations per capita.&nbsp; It is typically ranked in the top ten.&nbsp; Often around number eight for farmers and
number eleven for agricultural workers, with occupations like delivery driver,
iron workers, and pilots being ahead of farming.&nbsp; Logging typically number one.&nbsp; Strangely, law enforcement isn’t in the top
ten.&nbsp; The most common fatal accidents in
agriculture are transportation accidents which isn’t surprising.&nbsp; OSHA puts it at number ten.&nbsp; 

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The
average fatality rate for farmers is 24.7/100,000 workers.&nbsp; Which is actually a decrease as more safety
equipment and technologies along with awareness have help decline the number.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; In 2020, there were 11,880 injuries in agricultural
production that required days away from work.&nbsp;&nbsp;
From 2014-2015, 42% of all hired crop worker injuries were classified as
a sprain or strain.&nbsp; In 2014, an
estimated 12,000 youth were injured on farms; 4,000 of these injuries were due
to farm work.&nbsp; It’s hard to obtain really
current number but this paints the picture effectively.&nbsp; 

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Without going into grizzly details, the majority of serious
injury accidents and fatalities fall into several broad categories:
transportation accidents, equipment rollovers, falls, grain storage (the Barton
County Farm Bureau just held a seminar last weekend regarding this),
electrocution, and poisoning.&nbsp; A major
contributing factor in many cases is extreme tiredness which is seemingly part
of the job.&nbsp; 

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Finally, don’t forget the hazards of working with livestock,
old equipment or equipment in need of repair, and carelessness.&nbsp; Many jobs in agriculture are routine and

Move over green beans and carrots, there are more exciting fruits and vegetables on the way. USD 428 Great Bend Director of Food Services Kristy Alvord recently secured a grant to continue the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program in the district's elementary schools starting in October. The program is part of the United States Department of Agriculture's (USDA) fight against childhood obesity. 

"The benefit to the kids is they get to try maybe some fruits and vegetables they've never tried before, maybe some they've never even seen before," Alvord said. "The ultimate goal is to get them to try and like new things."

The program was first introduced into the district at Park Elementary five years ago. This year, with Jefferson Elementary also receiving a grant, for the first time all five elementary schools in USD 428 will utilize the program.

Alvord said the program is usually practical, giving the kids more access to fruits and vegetables they know and can see at the local grocery store. But sometimes it's fun to throw in the more exotic foods like the rambutan, an odd-looking fruit from southeast Asia.

"They look like a fuzzy little ball," Alvord explained. "You cut them open on the inside and it kind of looks like a white grape. Those are kind of fun things the kids get excited about."

Alvord said one goal of the program is to get kids looking in the produce section while shopping with mom and dad. A byproduct of the program is creating excitement about a healthier diet.

"It's only on Tuesdays and Thursdays right now," Alvord said. "So hopefully the kids will go home and it gives the parents something to talk to their kids about. 'Hey, what did you try today?' Maybe they can start purchasing those items and getting them to eat."

The program allocates $50-75 per student in the program. USD 428 received a grant of just under $95,000 for the program this year.

"I don't know if the kids think it's neat, but they get to try some different fruits and vegetables out there they might not ever have an opportunity to try," said USD 428 Superintendent Khris Thexton at the Sept. 12 board meeting. "Whether they try them or not, that's a different story. But it's there for them to try, and I think that's a great way to get new things in front of kids."

Fresh fruits and veggie program now in all USD 428 elementary schools

If you don't like it, don't read it is not always how it goes. For almost as long as there have been books, there have been banned books. Sept. 18-24 is Banned Books Week, and the Great Bend Public Library is kicking off the week with a Banned Books Bash for teens in grades 6-12 Monday at 4 p.m.

"We’re celebrating banned and challenged books," said Haylee Huddleston, teen services librarian at GBPL. "They’re
any title that has been questioned by anyone, usually parents of students
in schools, who have them either in their curriculum or at the library. They
just have some objection to the content or the nature of the book. The point of
the Banned Books Bash, and Banned Books Week in general, is just to celebrate
the freedom to read what you choose."

Some bans and challenges are expected, but many books on the list come as a surprise. "Harriet the Spy," has been banned because, well, it's 11-year-old protagonist is a spy and could be a bad influence on those who read the book. "The Diary of Anne Frank," has been challenged for several reasons relating to the Holocaust, but one reader challenged the book because it, "was a downer." "Charlotte's Web," was once banned in Kansas because a pair of parents thought talking animals must be "the work of the devil."

Monday's bash at the library will give young readers a hands-on experience with some of the books that have been challenged and banned over the years.

"We’ll have little things around where they can try to
guess what the banned book is based on why it was banned," Huddleston said. "Then they can read a
little bit of it and about it. It’s also a tasting because we’ll have snacks
for them as well. So we’ll get to sample the books and some snacks, and we’ll
have some activities, too."

City of Great Bend prepares for 28% increase in health insurance rates

Who cares about Saturday night entertainment when you can spend the day at a country auction? Now that it’s cooling down, local auctioneers are&nbsp;revving&nbsp;their season&nbsp;with weekly sales&nbsp;before snow flies. One of the bonuses to attending local auctions is that we’re sure to run into old&nbsp;friends.&nbsp;A number&nbsp;of us&nbsp;were part of these Saturday crowds for decades as we furnished&nbsp;houses, kitchens, and tool shops&nbsp;from scratch.&nbsp;Once we&nbsp;found&nbsp;our&nbsp;necessities,&nbsp;some of us&nbsp;got hooked on belongings&nbsp;someone else&nbsp;first&nbsp;loved. Others&nbsp;bid on&nbsp;treasures that reminded&nbsp;them&nbsp;of childhood or visits to grandparents’ homes.&nbsp;Depending on the collection, a&nbsp;great&nbsp;auction&nbsp;is&nbsp;better than visiting a museum. It’&nbsp;fascinating&nbsp;to see snippets&nbsp;from folks’ lives&nbsp;from&nbsp;decades before.&nbsp;Sometimes,&nbsp;I find&nbsp;a treasure&nbsp;I didn’t know I needed&nbsp;and my head keeps nodding yes during the bidding.

Who knows who&nbsp;you’ll run into at an auction,&nbsp;so&nbsp;prepare for catch-up&nbsp;gab.&nbsp;This can involve hours discovering where old colleagues&nbsp;now&nbsp;live&nbsp;or&nbsp;finding&nbsp;out what&nbsp;kids and grandkids are&nbsp;up to.&nbsp;Heaven’s,&nbsp;some early starters&nbsp;share&nbsp;stories about great grands!&nbsp;It doesn’t&nbsp;seem possible&nbsp;time&nbsp;enough&nbsp;has passed&nbsp;to create great grands&nbsp;when&nbsp;everyone&nbsp;still feels&nbsp;young on the inside.&nbsp;These conversations&nbsp;also&nbsp;remember&nbsp;those we’ve lost&nbsp;since last&nbsp;we&nbsp;visited.

For those of us who enjoy local comedy, there’s no one better to poke fun than a good auctioneer.&nbsp;From the time I first attended Stithem and Fabrizius auctions back in the '70s,&nbsp;Leon would interrupt the chatter long enough to tease someone in the crowd and then resume business without losing&nbsp;his&nbsp;concentration. This last week, we were in the community&nbsp;center&nbsp;in&nbsp;a nearby town&nbsp;and&nbsp;folks&nbsp;competitively&nbsp;bid&nbsp;high dollar on foofoorah.&nbsp;Eventually,&nbsp;boxes of religious objects, pictures, crosses, and other&nbsp;sentimental&nbsp;objects crossed the table. For whatever reason, it took&nbsp;a&nbsp;while for folks to bid,&nbsp;triggering the auctioneer to astutely remind us, “Jesus is watching.”

For&nbsp;fans of&nbsp;homemade food, auctions&nbsp;showcase local cooks.&nbsp;Area vendors&nbsp;sell homemade pies and cinnamon rolls.&nbsp;Kirwin auctions once guaranteed&nbsp;slices&nbsp;of fresh coconut cream or butterscotch pies. Auctions at the Ellis K of C Hall promise&nbsp;so many&nbsp;choices that diners&nbsp;have to hit the kitchen more than once.&nbsp;Hungry buyers can snag hot-off-the grill brauts, burgers, and dogs. Add a pickled egg or brownie to complete the meal and you’re set&nbsp;to&nbsp;bid the rest of the day.&nbsp;

Folks in big cities might attend&nbsp;concerts and professional&nbsp;entertainment&nbsp;more often than those of us&nbsp;from&nbsp;rural areas.&nbsp;That said, it’s hard to beat a good auction for a full day’s entertainment shared with friends. 

You might even&nbsp;haul&nbsp;home treasure you didn’t know you needed.

House Committee Holds Right to Repair Hearing The House Committee on Small Business held a hearing on the "right to repair”. An advocate for the right to repair said farmers just want to be able to obtain parts and do repairs themselves. She said it can be difficult to find credentialed servicers to make some of the repairs needed in rural communities, forcing customers to travel long distances just to get their items fixed.&nbsp;However, Ken Taylor who represented the Association of Equipment Dealers at the hearing, expressed concern that giving people access to the internal software inside their equipment would allow them to modify emissions and safety controls in tractors and other vehicles creating liability issues. He said dealers already sell a number of parts to farmers, but do not want to see customers trying to tamper with internal controls for safety, environmental, liability, and intellectual property reasons. Seventy-four percent of the sorghum was at or beyond the coloring stage by September 11, eight percentage points behind last year and 4 points behind average. By September 11, thirty-six percent of the sorghum was mature, 2 percentage points behind last year but 1 point ahead of average. Eighty-eight percent of Texas’ sorghum acreage was mature, eight percentage points ahead of last year and 9 points ahead of average. Twenty-three percent of the 2022 sorghum acreage had been harvested, two percentage points ahead of last year but equal to the average. Twenty percent of the nation’s sorghum was rated in good to excellent condition on September 11, one percentage point below the previous week and 37 points below the same time last year. House Committee Holds Right to Repair Hearing The House Committee on Small Business held a hearing on the "right to repair”. An advocate for the right to repair said farmers just want to be able to obtain parts and do repairs themselves. She said it can be difficult to find credentialed servicers to make some of the repairs needed in rural communities, forcing customers to travel long distances just to get their items fixed.&nbsp;However, Ken Taylor who represented the Association of Equipment Dealers at the hearing, expressed concern that giving people access to the internal software inside their equipment would allow them to modify emissions and safety controls in tractors and other vehicles creating liability issues. He said dealers already sell a number of parts to farmers, but do not want to see customers trying to tamper with internal controls for safety, environmental, liability, and intellectual property reasons. Sorghum Crop Update By September 11, ninety-six percent of the nation’s sorghum acreage had reached the headed stage, 3 percentage points behind both last year and the 5-year average. Seventy-four percent of the sorghum was at or beyond the coloring stage by September 11, eight percentage points behind last year and 4 points behind average. By September 11, thirty-six percent of the sorghum was mature, 2 percentage points behind last year but 1 point ahead of average. Eighty-eight percent of Texas’ sorghum acreage was mature, eight percentage points ahead of last year and 9 points ahead of average. Twenty-three percent of the 2022 sorghum acreage had been harvested, two percentage points ahead of last year but equal to the average. Twenty percent of the nation’s sorghum was rated in good to excellent condition on September 11, one percentage point below the previous week and 37 points below the same time last year. National Sorghum Producers - Sorghum e-Notes

I hope you had a chance to check out the Kansas State Fair this past week! Mostly, I hope you moved off the midway and away from the concerts to check out the incredible 4-H and Open Class exhibits.

I delivered over 70 4-H entries for our county and that doesn’t include the 4-H members who participated in the 4-H Dog Show, Communication Presentations, Judging Contests, Fashion Revue, or Livestock contests! Centennial Hall is a busy place on the day of check in as agents from all 105 counties deliver entries for evaluation by a judge. For perspective, there were 1596 4-H photos judged! There were at least 10 foods judges working through a crazy number of cakes, pies, cookies, and breads.

Communication Presentations include demonstrations, illustrated talks, and poetry/prose readings and we had the great problem of needing to secure an additional judge due to the number of entries! Watching 4-H members step onto a different stage with the distractions of people walking past and unfamiliar audiences is a fun and rewarding experience. I had to appreciate a judge the first weekend who awarded a low ribbon placing and said that the young man admitted that he hadn’t really practiced or adequately prepared; this is experiential learning at its finest!

In all events, 4-H members must have earned a purple ribbon at their local county fair or club day in order to be eligible to present at the Kansas State Fair. Even if they didn’t receive a top ribbon at State Fair, being chosen to participate is a great step.

Speaking of ribbons, we award purple, blue, red, white, and participation ribbons. A participation ribbon is usually reserved for our littlest 4-H members, our Cloverbuds and recognizes their participation in a non-competitive environment.

A purple ribbon indicates excellent quality and is usually reserved for the top few entries. A blue ribbon indicates superior quality and that basic standards have been met; it may have some minor flaws or issues. A red ribbon is awarded for average quality and often indicates that most standards are met with some areas

for improvement. A white ribbon is given when an entry is below average quality and minimum standards.

Most of our judges use a rubric to assist them in fairly and evenly evaluating a variety of entries. I will tell you from experience that it is much harder than it looks. 4-H judges always try to provide some positive feedback along with the critical information for improvement.

If you didn’t make it through 4-H Centennial Hall this year, be sure to put it on your agenda for next year. Check out the creative work from young people across our state and Barton County!

Wheatland Electric will be hosting this year’s Cram the Van food drive at September’s Final Friday at Great Bend Alive Plaza on Friday, September 30, 2022 from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. The public is invited to attend and help support the Community Food Bank of Barton County with a cash or can donation.

Wheatland is headed into 2022 with a renewed commitment to the communities they serve – “Think BIG!” is this year’s motto – Big Energy, Big Support, Big Community, Big Ideas. Wheatland is hoping to make this year’s Cram the Van their BIGGEST, BRIGHTEST and BEST year yet!

This month’s venue will feature the newly painted Art Alley, which is the alley between the 2000 block of Forest and Lakin Aves., designed by local artist Melanie Ryan, and painted by community volunteers.

September’s Final Friday activities include live music, food, drinks, and a livestream of the Great Bend High School varsity football game against Dodge City. Go Panthers! Attendees are encouraged to bring a cash or can donation to Cram the Van, play the 50/50 raffle, register for prizes, and join the fun! All proceeds will benefit the Community Food Bank of Barton County.

On-site donors will also be able to enter to win a Samsung Smart Projector Freestyle valued at $700. A winner will be drawn at the end of the Cram the Van season.

About Cram the Van Every fall since 2014, Wheatland Electric has hosted community gatherings, school competitions, and other events to collect donations for local food banks across their service territory.

The annual food drive is coined “Cram the Van” thanks to their signature fleet vehicle: a red, extended passenger van used to collect and deliver donations.

Over the past eight years, and thanks to the generosity of the communities they serve, Wheatland has been able to facilitate the collection of more than 86 tons (172,309 lbs.) of food for local food banks across southwest and southcentral Kansas.

Wheatland Electric hosting Cram the Van at Great Bend's Final Friday Sept. 30

RV Retailer LLC announced the acquisition of Harper Camperland with two locations in Great Bend and Wichita, Kansas.

Jon Ferrando, Chief Executive Officer and President of RVR stated, “We are excited to enter Kansas with Harper Camperland growing our store count to 106 across the nation.&nbsp; Kansas is one of the top 10 fastest growing RV states in terms of registrations with excellent RV demographics.&nbsp; Harper Camperland has served the Kansas markets since 1983 as one of the largest dealers in the state.”

“We are excited to welcome Harper Camperland associates into RV Retailer. The stores will be managed under the West Region led by Jim Humble.&nbsp; Both locations have excellent store facilities with extensive service and parts centers and great product brands including Jayco, Grand Design and Forest River,” added Ferrando.

Harper Camperland started its Great Bend location in 1983 and has been through expansions, adding a second location in Park City (Wichita) in 2019. The Park City location is a new state of the art facility opened in Q4 of 2019 on I-35 just north of Wichita on 10 acres with 38,000 square feet or indoor space and 25 service bays. Both stores carry incredible Cherokee, Grand Design and Jayco.
