Wednesday's Weather

BY JACKIE MUNDT Pratt County farmer and rancher Over the past decade or two, farmhouse décor has been an in vogue style of interior design. It makes me chuckle when I think about people who don’t live on a farm trying to create clean and pretty spaces through white wash, distressed paint and vintage hardware. Real farmhouses are rarely as desirable as this style is made out to be. I live in a real farm house and can guarantee my house won’t be featured on HGTV anytime soon. I honestly don’t think there is anything in my house that resembles the farmhouse style. However, the character that inspired designers to want to recreate the functional, no frills feel of country living, can be seen in many places in this old farmhouse. Every house has its own story. Our house’s story began as a kit house made by Sears and Roebuck that was delivered by train and assembled by its owner. We don’t know the exact year the house was delivered but estimate it was likely around the 1920s. The house was built just a few yards from the original homestead, which was still standing until about a decade ago and could fit in our kitchen. I can imagine the excitement and pride that must have been felt when this model was selected. It was a statement of perseverance and success to move from a house that was merely shelter to what was likely the equivalent of a mansion for the time. The trade-off of our house’s cool story is it was built by farmers not professional carpenters. The house is sturdy and functional, even though it has lots of little imperfections that are a product of the original DIYers. The house has seen a lot of lifestyle change in the last century: the installation of indoor plumbing, electrification and the move from wood stoves and chimneys to a furnace and air conditioning. Some of the remnants of these eras can still be seen in things like a few push button light switches or nob and tub lights from the original electrification, which have been preserved as novelties. We have also seen glimpses of the interests and taste of former home owners as we have worked to make the house our own. While tearing out outdated carpeting to take advantage of the original hardwood floors, we found decorative room mats that were in style during the time of construction. Each time we discover a new detail in the house, it’s like the house is telling the story of generations that have lived here before. Though each family who has called this house their home has been unique, they all share some things in common. The kitchen has prepared many meals for families who work the land. The floors have been tracked with mud and dirt more times than they have been clean. The rooms have played host to moments of joy, hope, and love that hopefully outweighed the times of worry and grief. The bay windows provided protection for the extreme Kansas weather that has often been a blessing and a curse. Our house is worn and imperfect because it is a place where life has been lived. Character like that can’t be replicated for a home good store. This house will never be as pretty as homes designed to look like the farmhouse style, and that’s OK with me. ELLSWORTH COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just before 2p.m. Tuesday in Ellsworth County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2016 Western Star semi driven by Rodney E. Keller, 70, Hartley, Iowa, was eastbound on Kansas 156 at 15th Street.

The semi drifted off the right side of the road, struck the bridge rail and traveled down a steep embankment. 

The vehicle then traveled up a hill, went airborne at the hill crest, traveled back down another steep embankment before coming to rest in a soybean field

EMS transported Keller to the hospital in Ellsworth. He was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

Barton County Commission meeting agenda (9/21)

Veronica Lara took her citizenship classes through Barton’s Center for Adult Education 11 years ago and through that process, she learned that they also provide courses for adults wanting to continue their education. Fast forward to 2022 and she has her high school diploma and a plan for the future. “I was working as a teacher assistant at USD 428 and I really liked the job but I needed a full-time job with benefits,” she said. “I needed my high school diploma to qualify, so I got that this summer and now I have a full-time job with benefits working at USD 428 for the transportation department.”

Lara’s next steps are to take the CDL classes and driving test at Barton and become a bus driver for USD 428. “This will allow me to make a better salary and I will still get to work with kids, which I enjoy,” she said. While the future is bright for Lara, she said it was a challenge getting to where she is. She struggled with the language barrier. However, she didn’t let that stop her and said Barton was instrumental in getting her moving down the right path. “I would like to thank this incredible institution for its excellent services,” she said. “The faculty and staff are the best. They do an excellent job and they always try to help. They are flexible, they have a clear understanding of what type of help each student needs and they are also very nice and dedicated to their work.” Lara encourages others to utilize the Center for Adult Education to help them get started. “Nothing is forever and it is never too late to start and move forward,” she said. “I would highly recommend this institution and staff as they will absolutely take care of every student and adapt to their needs. For anyone trying to get their diploma, you will not regret making this decision. This will open many doors for your future and create many more job opportunities. There is a better future ahead of you.” Lara said she also wanted to give her family credit for always being there for her. “I would also like to thank my family and friends,” she said. “I would not have been able to complete this without their assistance. I knew that when I had a question, I could rely on any of them to try and help.” Barton’s next orientation sessions will be held from 1-4 p.m. from Nov. 14-17. Barton Adult Education student earns high school diploma and new job

Sharon and Leon Alexander and Michelle Abedi were approved for a
conditional use permit to allow the operation of an Air BnB in an R-1 zone
located at 2107 27th Street in Great Bend. 
With the addition of the house on 27th Street, Great Bend Building
Official Logan Burns said at Monday's Great Bend City Council meeting there will be 13 Air BnB homes within city limits. 
Notice of the request for the conditional use permit was given to surrounding
landowners within 200 feet of the real estate. No complaints or comments were

With the addition of the house on 27th Street, Great Bend Building
Official Logan Burns said at Monday's Great Bend City Council meeting there will be 13 Air BnB homes within city limits. 
Notice of the request for the conditional use permit was given to surrounding
landowners within 200 feet of the real estate. No complaints or comments were
made at the Great Bend Planning Commission meeting in August.

House on 27th Street in Great Bend approved to become Air BnB

I was having a conversation with a friend this week and they mentioned that they were vacuuming cobwebs out of their house only to have them appear again two days later. I told her to just get used to it because it was only going to get worse over the next several weeks.

Spiders live on insects and other insect like things even including other spiders. Many spiders do not survive the winter as an adult, they either overwinter as eggs or an adult female does hibernate so as to lay eggs and die in the spring. It all depends on the species. When spring starts out there aren’t a lot of insects necessarily available for food so spiders grow slowly. But as the summer progresses we see a constantly increasing population of insects and as the insect population grows, so do the creatures that live on insects, like spiders. By the time we get well into September things can get kind of out of hand. Then insects start trying to come inside our homes to find a safe place to overwinter. Right along with those insects come the things that live on insects—spiders.

Now that half of you are totally freaking out let me say that we really only have two “venomous” spiders in Kansas. I prefer venomous over poisonous because the only time they are a problem is if they bite you and inject their venom. Hemlock is poisonous, copperheads and brown recluses are venomous! With that out of the way, we have black widows and brown recluses in Kansas. Black widows are pretty rare. Brown recluses, on the other hand, are so common that I can find them in every house in the region, given enough time!

Both spiders can be a problem if they bite you, or it can honestly be a non- event. All spiders can bite. It’s how they live. But many of them either have jaws too small to puncture our skin, or if they do puncture the skin, the result won’t be much worse than a mosquito bite. If you ever have any apparent bite that won’t heal or causes excessive pain, redness and swelling, get to your family doctor as soon as possible. Brown recluses come by their name honestly. They don’t spin webs, they are stalk and attack predators and they want to avoid people. You’re going to find them in piles of newspapers, in boxes in rooms you don’t go into often, or deep in the garage where you rarely go!

To reduce spiders in your home take steps to reduce insects in your home. Make sure that doors and windows seal tight. This time of year treat the foundation and areas up and down from the foundation with a general lawn and garden insecticide. Use a ready to use home insect pest control product and treat the baseboard areas, locations where utilities enter your

house and thresholds of doorways into your house. Insects, and spiders, will often travel where the wall and floor meet because they are at less risk of attack when out in the open. Do not use “bombs” or glue traps. Bombs are really only effective on flying insects. Glue traps don’t really reduce populations and only show you how many insects and spiders are really in your house, which will ultimately only freak you out more!

We will have insects and spiders in our houses. That’s a fact. You can reduce those populations but not eliminate them. Once freezing weather starts to show up, things will start to get better. Well, at least until spring.

The City of Great Bend is rolling out another Ladies Night Out on
Thursday, Sept. 22 to encourage downtown shopping, but this event comes with a
new twist. 
This year’s Ladies Night will include a murder mystery shopping event.

Great
Bend Community Coordinator Christina Hayes said you’ll want to enter each
participating business to gather clues to solve the mystery. 
"You go to each store because you collect evidence at each place," said Hayes. "Each store will have person evidence and weapon evidence. You will start eliminating evidence on your play card." 
Once you think you know the suspect, weapon and location where the fake murder
happened, you’ll fill out a form and turn it in at any participating store.
There will be chances to win $25 and up to $100.

Great Bend hosting ‘murder mystery shopping’ this Thursday

The Great Bend City Council was faced with a 28.8%&nbsp; increase to their 2023 health insurance rates from Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) at Monday’s meeting. Instead
of approving the rates, the city council voted 5-0 to send the city’s health
insurance provider out for bids. 
Great Bend Human Resources Director Randy Keasling said city staff budgeted for
a 7% increase to health insurance premiums for employees and the city,
but expected a significantly higher contribution for staff in 2024. "During the pandemic, no one was going to the doctor," said Keasling. "We have not raised rates for staff for three years. That's come to an end. We budgeted a 7-percent increase. We're going to watch this very closely. We all feel like it's going to be a pretty significant increase next year." 
Keasling said this year and last year were tough on the city as far as high
utilization of health insurance claims, with catastrophic events happening.

"We have healthy reserves," said Keasling. "We want to make sure we keep healthy reserves." 
Great Bend’s Blue Cross Blue Shield representative Claudio Faundez said it
never hurts to shop around, but getting a similar health plan will be based on the
same claim numbers that Blue Cross uses. 
"When you go look at other carriers and how they quote it, they are going to ask us for history," said Faundez. "Whenever they ask Randy, he's going to give me a call and ask if we can provide claims history. We will provide that, and that is what other carriers are going to base their projections off of. Exactly what we do. I don't expect that to be much different." 
Great Bend scheduled open enrollment for its employees at the end of October,
but will now research to get more information on different providers’ rates.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

The city's health insurance is self-funded, but administered through Blue Cross Blue Shield. Great Bend pays 83% of each employee's premium, with the employee paying 17%. All the claims are paid from the self-funded plan, but the city pays an administrative fee to BCBS.

Many special things had to happen between 1999 and 2006 before Great Bend-native Jeremy Rusco ultimately started Dynamic Discs, his disc golf company. A rare winning season on the gridiron turned to college opportunities. A move across the state ultimately led to the creation of one of the premiere disc golf companies in the world. But it all started in Great Bend when Rusco and the Panther football team struggled to find wins.

"We had some tremendous talent not only in the Class of 2002, but in my brother's class, the Class of 2000, and the Class of 2001," he said. "There was a lot of good talent there. We just could not seem to find a way to put together the wins in the way we needed to."

Losing football games in Great Bend was hardly a new idea. In 20 seasons from 1980 to 2000, the Panthers posted just two winning seasons. Rick Clark won the final two games in 1984 to move to 5-4, and David Webb's team also finished at 5-4 in 1998. Great Bend posted a paltry 11-70 record over a 9-year stretch in the middle of that run.

Everything changed for Rusco's senior year in 2001. Bo Black came up from Texas to take over the program, leading the Panthers to a 6-3 record in his first season. Black would eventually coach Great Bend to eight-consecutive winning seasons, including an 11-2 run in 2006 when the Panthers made it all the way to the Class 5A state championship game.

"He was very motivated, very passionate, loved what he did," said Rusco. "Clearly, he was a great leader and a great coach. I was very fortunate to have played my senior year under Coach Black and the rest of his team and coaching staff. It was definitely fun to be part of a winning team."

Back in that first season, Great Bend sat at 5-2 after a 28-21 win against Hays to open district play. Back then, districts consisted of four teams with the top two from each district advancing to the playoffs. Salina Central was still a powerhouse then, and the Mustangs beat the Panthers 35-28 in week eight of the season. Mathematically eliminated from the playoffs with a game to go, Rusco and the Panthers turned it on in a 56-13 win against Buhler to end the season.

"It would be hard to not remember how much fun we had in that Buhler game," Rusco said. "That was the final game of the season for us. At that point, after we lost to Salina, we knew we were not going to make it to the playoffs. The goal and intentions of that game were to make sure we had as much fun as possible."

Rusco rushed for 397 yards and seven touchdowns that night, both school records that still stand. The big finish put him at 1,719 rushing yards on the season, and 3,164 rushing yards for a career, two more school records that remain to this day.

Rusco was also a star for the Panther track team that spring. He ran with Jermaine Barnett, Graham Neeland, and Cade Butler on the 4x100 team in a school record of 42.50 seconds that still stands. Barnett and Rusco were joined by Tyler Penn and Jorge Ramirez in the 4x400m relay for a school record of 3:21.1 that still stands. Rusco claimed silver state medals in the 400m dash his junior and senior years.

Fort Hays State University offered Rusco a full-ride scholarship to play football and run track. But after two years in Hays, Rusco made the life-changing decision to move his talents east to Emporia State University.

"I was just not really enjoying my time there, and something was pulling me a different direction to go to Emporia," he said. "While I learned disc golf at Fort Hays with some of the football and track guys, if I had not transferred to Emporia State University, I do not believe Dynamic Discs would have ever been a little college hobby formed. I definitely think I'd have a much different career path to this day. So, in so many regards, in almost every regard, I am very thankful and very blessed I did make the career change to Emporia State University."

Unlike today's NCAA, Rusco was not allowed to play football immediately in Emporia. He spent time with fellow GBHS grads and athletes Neeland, Eric Rondeau, Trenton Olivier, Brandon Mauler, and Adam Searle, as well as his cousin Steven Eurich from Hoisington.

"In between football practices or our sporting events, whatever we were doing, we had a disc golf course a couple blocks from the college house," said Rusco. "We would find our way to be competitive out on the disc golf course."

With a little extra time, Rusco's passion for disc golf grew. He purchased 100 discs from a popular company and sold the discs on Ebay. He continued to sell the discs until graduating from ESU in 2006. Searle, his old high school quarterback, helped him transition Dynamic Discs into something bigger.

"Once I graduated in 2006, I really wasn't sure whether I was going to keep Dynamic Discs going, or try to get my master's degree, or go out and get a real job," Rusco said. "Somehow, I landed on being a substitute teacher, mostly at Emporia High School."

Today, Dynamic Discs is one of the biggest names in the sport. The headquarters and warehouse in Emporia sit on a little more than 80,000 square feet. The company has another 6,000 square feet retail store in downtown Emporia. Dynamic Discs employs some 80 people and has stores in Texas, Arkansas, New Mexico, and Alabama. Many of the sport's top professionals are sponsored by DD.

All along, Rusco said the ride has been both enjoyable and stressful. As the company continues to grow, Rusco is letting others help him out.

"I think any entrepreneur would be lying if they didn't say it wasn't stressful," he said. "It certainly is a lot of fun and very rewarding at the same time. It's all about finding that work-life balance. In a lot of regards, that took me way too many years to find. Now that I've got a two year old, I guess I feel like I've found that better work-life balance. I'm putting more emphasis on more time with the family and delegating more things around the business."

The big finish put him at 1,719 rushing yards on the season, and 3,164 rushing yards for a career, two more school records that remain to this day.Rusco was also a star for the Panther track team that spring. He ran with Jermaine Barnett, Graham Neeland, and Cade Butler on the 4x100 team in a school record of 42.50 seconds that still stands. Barnett and Rusco were joined by Tyler Penn and Jorge Ramirez in the 4x400m relay for a school record of 3:21.1 that still stands. Rusco claimed silver state medals in the 400m dash his junior and senior years.Fort Hays State University offered Rusco a full-ride scholarship to play football and run track. But after two years in Hays, Rusco made the life-changing decision to move his talents east to Emporia State University."I was just not really enjoying my time there, and something was pulling me a different direction to go to Emporia," he said. "While I learned disc golf at Fort Hays with some of the football and track guys, if I had not transferred to Emporia State University, I do not believe Dynamic Discs would have ever been a little college hobby formed. I definitely think I'd have a much different career path to this day. So, in so many regards, in almost every regard, I am very thankful and very blessed I did make the career change to Emporia State University."Unlike today's NCAA, Rusco was not allowed to play football immediately in Emporia. He spent time with fellow GBHS grads and athletes Neeland, Eric Rondeau, Trenton Olivier, Brandon Mauler, and Adam Searle, as well as his cousin Steven Eurich from Hoisington."In between football practices or our sporting events, whatever we were doing, we had a disc golf course a couple blocks from the college house," said Rusco. "We would find our way to be competitive out on the disc golf course."With a little extra time, Rusco's passion for disc golf grew. He purchased 100 discs from a popular company and sold the discs on Ebay. He continued to sell the discs until graduating from ESU in 2006. Searle, his old high school quarterback, helped him transition Dynamic Discs into something bigger.<figure>

 </figure>"Once I graduated in 2006, I really wasn't sure whether I was going to keep Dynamic Discs going, or try to get my master's degree, or go out and get a real job," Rusco said. "Somehow, I landed on being a substitute teacher, mostly at Emporia High School."Today, Dynamic Discs is one of the biggest names in the sport. The headquarters and warehouse in Emporia sit on a little more than 80,000 square feet. The company has another 6,000 square feet retail store in downtown Emporia. Dynamic Discs employs some 80 people and has stores in Texas, Arkansas, New Mexico, and Alabama. Now that I've got a two year old, I guess I feel like I've found that better work-life balance. would serve as the grand marshal for the Home for the Holidays Festival and
Parade in November. 
Accepting online forms until March 31, the public nominated deserving
candidates to lead the holiday parade.

The theme for this year's festival and parade downtown is "150 Years of Celebrations," playing off the city celebrating its 150th anniversary. 
Great Bend Community Coordinator Christina Hayes said recently retired city
attorney Bob Suelter has been named the grand marshal for this year’s parade. 
"There were eight candidates nominated, and the grand marshal that won is very fitting for the city's celebration," said Hayes. "Suelter won 41-percent of the votes of the eight nominated." 
Suelter worked for the City of Great Bend for 42 years as city attorney.
Shortly after his retirement last November, the municipal courtroom was named
after Suelter. 
Suelter will help lead the annual holiday parade the Saturday after
Thanksgiving. The festival downtown typically includes carriage rides, the
mayor’s tree lighting, food and other entertainment.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

By COLE REIF Great Bend Post Great Bend city crews will be replacing a damaged traffic light Tuesday, Sept. 20 at the intersection of 10th Street and Harrison Street. 
The light was damaged from a wind storm last December. 
Great Bend City Administrator Kendal Francis said the pole was replaced Monday
and the lights will be replaced Tuesday. Motorists can expect a different look at
the intersection during the project. 
"For a while, you're going to have a four-way, flashing red light at that intersection," said Francis. "Please be mindful as you come up to that intersection." 
Motorists from all directions will be required to stop while the light is
replaced.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Kansas crude prices start the week at $75.25 per barrel, down $1.75 from a week ago but nearly ten dollars higher than at the start of the year, and $13 higher than a year ago. Futures prices dropped nearly two dollars last week, but by lunchtime Monday were up half a dollar in New York ($85.64/bbl) and London ($91.89/bbl).

The auto club AAA says gasoline prices may soon end their string of daily declines after more than 100 consecutive days. U.S. gasoline prices are the lowest since early March, but fluctuating oil prices have slowed down the decline. The national average pump price was a fraction above $3.67 per gallon Monday. That's down nearly four cents from a week ago, the smallest weekly decline in months. Average prices are 24 cents lower than a month ago, but still 48 cents per gallon higher than last year at this time. The national average has fallen $1.34 since its peak in mid-June. Kansas pump prices on Monday average $3.40 per gallon, a dime lower than a month ago but more than half a dollar higher than a year ago. Diesel prices drop to $4.72 across Kansas, down 12 cents from last month, but $1.60 per gallon higher than a year ago. The Rig Count in Kansas shows 32 active drilling rigs west of Wichita, down one from last week. There are 27 active rigs in eastern Kansas. Independent Oil &amp; Gas Service reported drilling underway on one lease in Barton County on Friday. Independent Oil &amp; Gas Service reports one newly-completed well in Russell County, out of 24 west of Wichita last week. Operators have completed 1,151 wells so far this year, compared to 609 at this time last year. Kansas regulators approved 42 permits for drilling at new locations last week, 20 of them east of Wichita and 22 in Western Kansas, including one new permit in Barton County and two in Stafford County. So far this year, there are 1,172 new permits across the state, up from 732 a year ago. Domestic crude inventories topped off at 429.6 million barrels on September 9th, an increase of 2.4 million barrels for the week. That's about two percent below the five-year seasonal average, according to the EIA. Gasoline stockpiles dropped 1.8 million barrels and are about six percent below the five-year average for this time of year. The government reported a slight increase in U.S. crude-oil production last week, topping 12 million barrels per day for the 8th week in a row. Output during the week through September 9th increased about 20-thousand barrels per day to 12.134 million. That's more than two million barrels per day higher than the same week last year. The Energy Information Administration says U.S. crude imports dropped by nearly one million barrels per day to 5.8 million. The four week average indicate imports are roughly 2.6 percent higher than a year ago. The first half of this year saw a big jump in U.S. exports of petroleum products, due largely to changing trading patterns after the Ukraine invasion. The government says exports averaged nearly six million barrels per day, the best January-to-June tally since 1981. Oil-by-rail shipments in the United States were down nearly five percent last week. The Association of American Railroads reports 9,351 tankers hauling petroleum or petroleum products during the week through September 10th, down nearly three-hundred carloads from the week before and 4.6% lower than a year ago. Canadian shippers moved 8,063 tanker carloads. That's down more than six hundred tanker carloads from the week before, and 1.6% lower year-over-year. The government predicts the rebound in U.S. crude production will continue, and could set a new record next year. In it's Short Term Energy Outlook, the Energy Information Administration predicts domestic producers will pump an average 11.8 million barrels per day this year, which would be more than half a million barrels per day higher than last year. EIA expects output next year will rise to 12.6 million barrels per day, which would be an all-time record. The current record of 12.3 million barrels per day was set in 2019. North Dakota operators produced just over 33.1 million barrels of crude oil in July, which is down nearly 30-thousand barrels per day from the month before. According to the Department of Mineral Resources, the number-three crude-producing state continues to exceed its voluntary limits on gas flaring, capturing 94% of the natural gas produced at oil wells. Saudi Arabia told OPEC it raised crude production to just over 11 million barrels a day last month, according to the cartel's Monthly Oil Market Report. It’s the highest Saudi output since April 2020 during the short-lived price war with Russia. Saudi output has only rarely reached 11 million barrels in the country’s decades as an oil exporter.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Great Bend Rec open for enrollment for fall activities

On Sept. 13 at approximately 1:12 a.m., a Great Bend Police Department officer made a traffic stop in the 1900 block of Morton Street on a white four-door passenger car. 

During the traffic stop, K9 Menta was utilized to conduct a free air sniff where she alerted to the presence of illegal narcotics. 

After a search of the vehicle was conducted, Kaycie Rodabaugh, age 29, was arrested for possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia. Rodabaugh was transported to the Barton County Jail. Last week, city officials and contractors held the groundbreaking
ceremony for the nearly $8.9 million Great Bend police station to be built at
the 12th &amp; Baker intersection. 

Last Friday morning, City
Administrator Kendal Francis said citizens will be able to watch the
construction of the 20,100 square-foot facility as a camera will broadcast the
process.

The video stream will be linked to the city's website, <a href="https://www.greatbendks.net/">greatbendks.net</a>, when available. 
At the groundbreaking ceremony, Francis thanked the citizens for passing the
.10% sales tax increase to help fund the project. 
"Thank you to the citizens who were willing to make an investment in their community by the passage of the sales tax last November," said Francis. "We're ecstatic to have that take place." 
Costs for the new police station ballooned since the project first started last
year due to inflating construction expenses. The new police station will
include the municipal courtroom, which could have been eliminated from the
design to save $1.2 million. "Three and a half months ago we came to the city council knowing that this project was escalating in cost because this situation that is global," said Francis. "One of the suggestions for a cost savings was to cut the municipal court from this project and leave them where they're currently at. The city council understood we have one opportunity to do this project right." 
Construction on the facility is set to begin immediately and is expected to be
finished by next August.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

"One of the suggestions for a cost savings was to cut the municipal court from this project and leave them where they're currently at. The city council understood we have one opportunity to do this project right." 
Construction on the facility is set to begin immediately and is expected to be
finished by next August.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

STAFFORD COUNTY—A Kansas teen died in an accident just after 7:30a.m. Monday in Stafford County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2000 Pontiac Bonneville driven by 16-year-old Shane Riley Sheets of St. John was&nbsp;eastbound in the 100 block of NE 20th Street. 

The car entered the north ditch and struck a tree. Sheets was pronounced dead at the scene and transported to Minnis Chapel. He was properly restrained at the time of the accident, according to the KHP.

USD 349 has counselors and staff&nbsp; available to meet with students and staff throughout the day and throughout the week.

STAFFORD COUNTY —The Kansas Highway Patrol is investigating after a student from Stafford High School died in a car accident early Monday, according to USD 349 and the Stafford County Sheriff's office.

Counselors and staff are available to meet with students and staff throughout the day and throughout the week, according to the school district.

The Kansas Highway Patrol has not released details of the crash including the name of the student who died.&nbsp;
