Russell Kern, a nine-year 4-H member from Chase, Kansas, is the recipient of the Home Baking Association’s 2025 Bake to Give: Maddie Kruse Youth Award. Kern’s leadership, generosity and enthusiasm for teaching others through baking is inspiring. Kern is a Kansas 4-H member who exemplifies the values of the wheat-growing and baking communities. Kern has done just that through a remarkable series of hands-on workshops, community service projects and creative educational activities that exemplify the spirit of this award.

A talented baker and teacher, Kern has taken his passion for the 4-H Foods and Nutrition project beyond personal achievement, though his own accomplishments are impressive. Last summer, he earned grand champion honors at his county fair with his expertly crafted buttery croissants. But what sets Kern apart is his deep commitment to helping others, particularly younger 4-H members in his community. Over the past year, he has organized and led a series of interactive baking workshops that not only taught practical skills but also integrated science, nutrition and cultural traditions in a fun and accessible way.

In one workshop, held the day before Thanksgiving, Kern taught a group of young 4-H members how to make butterhorn rolls. Each participant took home a dozen freshly baked rolls to share with their families, but the lesson didn’t stop at baking technique. Kern also led an engaging experiment demonstrating how yeast works, using balloons to show how warm water and sugar help activate the yeast. During Christmas break, he taught participants to make New Year’s Cookies, a family tradition he was excited to share. That session also included a MyPlate nutrition activity, encouraging students to think about healthy food choices as they cooked together.

On St. Patrick’s Day, Kern hosted an Irish Soda Bread workshop, introducing the difference between yeast-leavened and soda-leavened breads. While the bread baked, students shook heavy cream into homemade butter, learned knife skills for chopping herbs and watched a video on how flour is milled. Each class welcomed about 10 students, lasted two hours and gave participants more than just recipes; they left with a deeper understanding of baking, food science and nutrition.

“I think that it is very important for upcoming generations to know how to bake food and the importance of their health,” Kern said. “I strive to teach people about cooking and living a healthy life while learning while they are at it.”

His leadership goes beyond the kitchen. Kern serves on the Kansas 4-H Health and Wellness Team and traveled to Washington, D.C., to learn new strategies for promoting healthy living in his state. He regularly volunteers with the Northern Rice County Food Bank, where he donated 30 pumpkin pie kits last Thanksgiving, and is currently organizing a Swipe Out Hunger meal packaging event at his school. He’s also raised over $1,000 for the Ellinwood Energizers 4-H Club and Ellinwood High School SkillsUSA by baking and selling cinnamon rolls, macaroni and cheese and burritos.

The community is invited to attend the Great Bend High School Marching Band Showcase this Friday, Aug. 1, at 7 p.m. at Memorial Stadium. This free event marks the culmination of a week-long band camp where students braved the summer heat to refine their musical skills, perfect their routines, and grow as a team.

The 2025-2026 GBHS Marching Band is under the new leadership of Ellie White, who brings fresh energy and enthusiasm to the program in her first year as Director. Assisting White are two other new music educators in USD 428: Alejandra Cornelio, band director at Great Bend Middle School, and Mark Ahlman, GBHS orchestra director.

Color guard instructors Melanie Maneth and Donna Becker, along with drum line instructors Alan Baxter and Addison Baxter, have also played an instrumental role in preparing students for this performance.

“This showcase is a celebration of the students’ hard work and dedication,” said White. “We’re excited to share our progress with the community and kick off a great year of music.”

The advisory was issued because of a waterline break resulting in a loss of pressure in the distribution system.&nbsp; Failure to maintain adequate pressure may result in a loss of chlorine residuals and bacterial contamination.&nbsp;

Public water suppliers in Kansas take all measures necessary to notify customers quickly after a system failure or shutdown. Regardless of whether it’s the supplier or KDHE that announces a boil water advisory, KDHE will issue the rescind notice following testing at a certified laboratory.

Laboratory testing of drinking water samples collected from the Russell Co RWD 3 indicate no evidence of bacteriological contamination and all other conditions that placed the system at risk of contamination are deemed by KDHE officials to be resolved. &nbsp;

L&amp;M Contractors in Great Bend plans to start working on the box bridge widening project on NW 10 Avenue on Monday, Aug. 4. The bridge is located approximately one half-mile north of the Great Bend city limits on North McKinley.

Barton County Engineer Barry McManaman said L&amp;M will remove the steel bridge rail and widen the concrete drainage structure six feet on both sides of the road.&nbsp; The county road and bridge crew will then construct the wider earth shoulders over the new concrete extensions.&nbsp; 

The road will remain open to traffic during construction, but motorists are asked to slow down and use caution when driving through the work zone.&nbsp; The project is anticipated to last six to eight weeks.

This professional development opportunity allowed the team to dive into the latest USDA nutrition regulations, explore new trends in child nutrition, and even sample student-approved food options that could soon make their way to Great Bend Public Schools' cafeterias.

“The conference is a great chance to connect with others in school nutrition and bring back ideas and innovations that support our students’ health,” said Alvord. “We’re always looking for ways to improve both the quality and the experience of school meals.”

Among the many highlights for Great Bend is the district’s ongoing commitment to quality and local sourcing. Did you know that USD 428 serves locally sourced beef to its students? This partnership not only supports area producers but also brings fresher, higher-quality meals to the table.

In addition, all five USD 428 elementary schools participate in the grant-funded Fresh Fruits &amp; Vegetable Program. Through this initiative, students enjoy a variety of fresh produce two days a week—an engaging way to introduce new flavors and promote lifelong healthy eating habits.

Keeping Up with USDA Updates USD 428 is fully compliant with the new USDA school nutrition standards, which include changes aimed at reducing added sugars and sodium in school meals:

Added Sugar Limits (Effective Now): · Breakfast cereals: No more than 6 grams of added sugars per dry ounce

· Yogurt: No more than 2 grams of added sugars per ounce

· Flavored milk: No more than 10 grams of added sugars per 8 fluid ounces

Buy American Requirement: · A new cap limits non-domestic food purchases to no more than 10%, encouraging more local and U.S.-sourced products.

Looking Ahead (By 2027-28): · Added sugars must account for less than 10% of weekly calories.

· Sodium in school lunches will be reduced by 15%, and school breakfasts by 10%.

“These changes are a positive step toward ensuring school meals continue to support the health and well-being of all students,” said Alvord. “We’re proud to be ahead of the curve.”

Nearly 400 miles of paved roads crisscross Barton County's 900 square miles, connecting its 25,000 residents. That's a lot of territory, home to many folks who may not always feel heard and who may have diverse needs.

That's why Barton County commissioners are taking their show on the road this fall. From late August through October, they plan to break in the afternoon from their Tuesday morning meetings to tour and visit taxpayers and businesses in far-flung corners where they work and live.

Commissioners hit the road "We just want to get out around the county, visit some people and hear what's on their minds," said Commission Chairman Tricia Schlessiger, District 4, on Tuesday. "I feel the commissioners need to branch out a little."

Schlessiger, who sees this initiative as a focus of her year leading the commission, is working with county staff and peers to formulate a catchy title for the tours. The other four commissioners — Duane Reif from District 1, Barb Esfeld from District 2, Shaun Hutchinson from District 3 and Donna Zimmerman from District 5 — are all on board with the idea."

This brings us back to the reasons we ran for office in the first place," Schlessiger said.

They have a lot of ground to cover, both in terms of square miles and the number of issues facing residents. Among the topics sure to make the list are property tax rates, road conditions, mowing ditches, and law enforcement/firefighting response times, which may vary from place to place.

Beyond the coffee klatsch The goal is to go beyond the traditional style of coffee klatsch meet-and-greets that draw the same regular crowds, she said. They want to go to farms, businesses and homes where taxpayers are.

From agriculture to oil production to manufacturing to family farms, "we have a lot of people and businesses that contribute a lot to our county but don't attend chamber coffees because they are busy working," she said. "We need to get a little bit of variety."

They plan to be strategic about this, dividing the county into quadrants. Then, they will make two or three stops each week in those areas.

"We will be reaching out," Schlessiger said. "But, if you want the commissioners to visit, please reach out to us."

Barton Commissioners plan to visit taxpayers where they work, live

Governor Laura Kelly announced Tuesday $25 million for 30 projects to improve intersections and roads across the state. The projects were selected for funding through the Kansas Department of Transportation’s (KDOT) City Connecting Link Improvement Program (CCLIP).&nbsp;

A project on US-156 Highway near Larned carries a price tag of $435,000, with $400,000 in funding from CCLIP. A project on K-14 Highway near Lyons has a price tag of $744,000, with $400,000 funded via CCLIP.

“Enhancing the safety and accessibility of our local highways is made possible by grants through this essential program,”&nbsp;Governor Laura Kelly said.&nbsp;“In turn, these roadway improvements help bring in resources and improve connectivity in various regions of the state.”&nbsp;

CCLIP provides funds for cities to make improvements on city connecting links that are on state highways. Selected projects are funded for the state fiscal years 2027 and 2028 selection cycle.&nbsp;

Under CCLIP, cities with populations above 2,500 have local minimum contribution requirements, and cities with populations over 100,000 are required to have a 25% match. Local contributions significantly expanded the scope and total impact of the selected projects, bringing their combined value to over $39 million.&nbsp;

“The essence of the City Connecting Links program lies in the shared commitment between KDOT and our communities,”&nbsp;said Secretary of Transportation Calvin Reed.&nbsp;“It's through this vital partnership that we can address both state and local transportation needs, fostering economic growth and connectivity across Kansas.”&nbsp;

Projects in this program may fall into one of three categories: Surface Preservation (SP), Pavement Restoration (PR), or Geometric Improvement (GI).&nbsp;

SP projects extend the life of the driving surface, such as overlays or joint repair, and are funded up to $400,000 per project. PR projects typically involve extensive pavement rehabilitation or full-depth pavement. GI projects focus on roadway geometrics that address safety, capacity, or operational needs, such as adding turn lanes or improving intersections. The PR and GI categories are funded up to $1.5 million per project.&nbsp;

Larned, Lyons part of $25M for road improvement projects across Kansas

This article is the third in a multi-week K-State agronomy series on wheat streak mosaic complex management to address the 2025 outbreak. 

In week 1, was the introduction of a KS. Wheat-Free Windows recommendation and discussion on herbicide recommendations for volunteer wheat. In week 2, discussion of the role of alternate hosts in the landscape. This week, the discussion will be on variety selection as part of an integrated management program for wheat streak mosaic. 

In the first article of this series, the recommendation for wheat-free windows (Figure 1) was discussed. These windows include periods 30 days prior to the start of the optimal winter wheat planting window by zone in Kansas. As the wheat curl mite is a community pest, coordinated breaks in volunteer wheat and other cereals will have the highest likelihood of lowering local and statewide mite levels moving into our 2025 optimal winter wheat planting date periods. Volunteer wheat that emerges after the fall crop is already established poses a lower risk as a green bridge and can be thought of in a similar way as the fall crop. Fall wheat planted early, during wheat-free windows, risks bridging wheat curl mite to the fall-established crop.

Here are some important considerations for achieving success with wheat-free windows:

Management with genetic resistance: Another tool in the toolbox - in addition to controlling volunteer wheat, genetic resistance is also an important component of a good integrated pest management strategy for wheat streak mosaic complex control. It’s important to note that while some varieties provide partial protection against the wheat streak complex, there is no silver bullet variety that will work in all scenarios. That is, all commercial varieties will be symptomatic under some conditions, but the degree of yield loss to the virus complex will vary between varieties.

As a reminder, yield loss to wheat streak complex is highly influenced by. Timing of infection, composition of viruses, and variety choice.

We know that fall infections and infections that occur in earlier stages of wheat development (prior to jointing) can result in the highest levels of yield loss. Infections that occur after the flag leaf and booting growth stages generally result in lower levels of yield loss. It should be noted that infections can occur in the fall and remain “dormant” in the plants until the weather warms in the spring. This is why we can sometimes see symptoms come on suddenly when the weather warms in the spring.

In addition to the timing of infection, the composition of viruses in a given field can impact final yield losses. Infections with more than one virus (WSMV + TriMV, for example) can result in synergistic yield losses. It was common to see infections with two or more viruses in Kansas in 2025.

When we think about variety resistance in the context of wheat streak mosaic complex, there are two main types. Resistance to the virus and resistance to the mite.

When it comes to resistance to the virus, several genes have been described (wsm1, wsm2, and wsm3). The gene wsm2 is most widely available in Kansas varieties, including KS Territory (red), KS Mako (red), KS Bill Snyder (red), KS Dallas (red), KS Hamilton (red), Guardian (red),

Oakley CL (red), Joe (white), and KS Big Bow (white). This resistance gene can help with severe wheat streak mosaic virus infections, but has key limitations. For example:

In addition, there are a handful of varieties with resistance to the wheat curl mite (cmc4), including Guardian, Canvas, TAM 112, Byrd, Avery, Langin, Kivari AX, KS Western Star, Whistler, Crescent AX, Incline AX, Fortify SF, TAM 115, TAM 204, and T158. These varieties remain susceptible to viral diseases, but they generally slow the development of the mite populations in the fall. This resistance can help reduce the risk of severe disease, but will not provide enough protection if wheat is planted in close proximity to volunteer wheat or other hosts infested with large populations of the curl mites and virus.

Central versus western Kansas: Location matters - unfortunately, many of these varieties are adapted to Western Kansas and may not be the best options for production systems in the central corridor. Some central Kansas-adapted varieties, including Rockstar, AP Prolific, SY Wolverine, LCS Photon AX, LCS Helix AX, and LCS Julep, tolerate WSMV infection better than others. It should be noted that, for all the reasons mentioned above, these varieties will still appear symptomatic under high disease pressure. KS Mako is a new release out of the K-State Manhattan breeding program that is adapted for the central corridor of the state and carries the wsm2 gene. These varieties will still show symptoms of WSMV but may yield better than other varieties that are more susceptible.

In many of these cases, Triticum mosaic virus was detected in the sample.</li><li>The resistance conferred by wsm2 can also become less effective at high temperatures, although resistance in KS Dallas and KS Hamilton seems to endure greater temperatures before breaking down (~ 70º F). The resistance is much less effective if wheat is planted too early for grazing or if high temperatures persist into October. KS Silverado (white) also has temperature-sensitive resistance to wheat streak mosaic, although from a different source than wsm2.</li>
 </ol>In addition, there are a handful of varieties with resistance to the wheat curl mite (cmc4), including Guardian, Canvas, TAM 112, Byrd, Avery, Langin, Kivari AX, KS Western Star, Whistler, Crescent AX, Incline AX, Fortify SF, TAM 115, TAM 204, and T158. Turtle Tots, a nature-based program for preschool youth ages 3-5, attending with their caregiver, will kick off fall programing on Friday, Aug. 22 from 10-11 a.m. at the Kansas Wetlands Education Center just northeast of Great Bend. Turtle Tot programs often include a story, craft, science experiment, and outdoor exploration time.

PRATT COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just before 7a.m. Wednesday in Pratt County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2004 Buick&nbsp;Rendezvous driven by&nbsp; &nbsp;Beaumont J.&nbsp; Lowe, 55, Pratt, was southbound on U.S. 281 at Southeast 60th Street. The driver&nbsp;&nbsp;failed to yield to traffic and swerved to miss noncontact vehicle. The Buick traveled off the roadway to the east came to a rest in a field.

EMS transported&nbsp; Lowe to Pratt Regional Medical Center. He was properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Kansas man hospitalized after SUV travels into a field

The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) expects to begin a sign upgrade project on major collectors in Barton County south of K-96 starting the week of Aug. 4.

The project will improve sign visibility in the area. This is a mobile operation, and traffic will flow as normal.

KDOT awarded the $69,542 construction contract to Sign-Up LTD DBA Haren’s Trees and Critters of Webster City, Iowa. Work should be completed by mid-August, conditions permitting.

Barton County Sheriff's Booking activity (7/29)

Three locations of Heart of Kansas Family Health Care were already known in the region, with branches in Great Bend, Larned, and Stafford. Earlier this month, a fourth location snuck into the mix. Stafford County Economic Development Executive Director Ryan Russell helped announce the location of that fourth clinic on 1590 KVGB/95.5 FM last week.

"Heart of Kansas opened a clinic in St. John," he said. "It's located in the Kenwood Plaza area, so if you're from St. John, you know where that is. They opened up and I guess nobody knew about it, so they realized they needed to tell people they're here because there's also one in Stafford. Everybody hears 'Heart of Kansas' and thinks Stafford. No, there's one in St. John now."

The new facility is located at 609 E. 1st Street in St. John. The new location is operating on a limited basis but should be fully operational later this summer. Arika Fanshier, nurse practitioner, began seeing patients first. She will be joined by Richard Aballay, MD., Nurse Practitioner Jackie Reed, and Nurse Practitioner Madison Hanzlick. 

The facility was made possible with support from the St. John City Council and Stafford County Commission. Heart of Kansas serves patients of all ages who are insured, uninsured and under-insured. For more information, call Heart of Kansas in St. John at (620) 377-5031.

The Barton County Sheriff’s Office responded to more than 100 calls for service on Monday, July 28, ranging from injury accidents and warrant arrests to multiple civil complaints and traffic stops throughout the county.

A crash with injuries was reported shortly after midnight near NE 120 Ave. and K-156 Hwy. The case is under investigation with a report expected to follow.

Later in the day, deputies handled a non-injury accident in the 600 block of U.S. 56 near Ellinwood. That incident also resulted in a case report.

A warrant arrest was carried out at the Barton County Courthouse Monday afternoon. A second warrant-related arrest was later reported at a residence in Ellinwood.

Deputies conducted several extra patrols and foot patrols throughout rural Barton County in communities such as Claflin, Odin, Beaver, Susank, Galatia, Olmitz, Albert and Pawnee Rock.

The sheriff’s office also responded to a wide range of civil complaints across Great Bend, Ellinwood, Hoisington, and other towns. In total, more than two dozen civil calls were logged Monday.

Deputies assisted with multiple traffic stops throughout the day in both rural and city areas, as well as responded to several driver complaints, open doors, alarm calls, welfare checks, and reports of suspicious vehicles.

K-9 units were deployed during two traffic stops in Great Bend on Monday afternoon and evening.

Great Bend Police Department incident log (7/28)

The Great Bend Police Department responded to a range of incidents from July 28 to July 29, including two burglaries, multiple assaults, civil complaints and an overdose.

A burglary not in progress was reported just before 2 a.m. Monday at a residence in the 200 block of Maple Street. A second burglary was reported late Monday night in the 5500 block of 9th Street, where two televisions were allegedly taken from a home.

Two assault cases were reported. One occurred Monday morning at a business in the 1300 block of 10th Street, where a victim reported being assaulted. Another incident was reported Monday evening at a health care facility located along K-96 Highway.

Police also responded to an overdose call around 2:40 a.m. Monday in the 2200 block of 30th Street. The incident was listed as an ingestion-related medical emergency.

Two people were arrested on warrants Monday at a business in the 4100 block of 10th Street. Both individuals were wanted on Great Bend Municipal Court warrants.

Later that evening, a domestic disturbance was reported around 8 p.m. in the 800 block of Maple Street, with a report taken. An earlier domestic-related call was also reported in the 1000 block of Heizer Street but was cleared without incident.

Other calls included multiple civil complaints, follow-ups, alarm activations, traffic stops, welfare checks and foot patrols. Officers conducted additional patrols at several local businesses, schools and medical facilities, including the University of Kansas Health System – Great Bend Campus and Great Bend High School.

It may be mid-summer, but veteran gardeners know it’s time to start planning the fall vegetable garden.

“Fall gardens may face additional pressures of pests and heat, but the flavor that comes from these late season crops are often better (than summer crops),” said Kansas State University horticulture expert Cynthia Domenghini.

She notes that gardeners should count the number of days to harvest, as well as the crops’ tolerance to frost, before deciding when to plant fall crops. Crops may be seeded directly, or transplanted into the garden.

“Growing transplants is a good choice when the temperature is too warm for starting seeds in the ground, assuming you have grow lights and space available for starting them indoors,” Domenghini said.

She provides some tips for successful fall crops:

· When seeding crops directly into the garden, plant slightly deeper than recommended in the spring to take advantage of the cooler soil temperatures and moisture available.

· Water more frequently to prevent the seeds from drying out.

· Overhead watering often causes soil to crust, making it more difficult for young, tender plants to emerge. Prevent this by applying a light sprinkling of vermiculite or compost over the row after seeding, or use a soak hose or drip irrigation right next to the row to allow water to slowly seep into the ground.

Domenghini also suggests a timeline for planting fall crops:

Mid- July Plant potatoes if you can find seed stock or have saved seed potatoes. Do not use freshly dug potatoes as they have built-in dormancy that will prevent growth. Also, grocery store potatoes are often treated, so they don’t sprout.

Cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower can be started from seed at this time. Choose a protected place where the soil can be kept moist and rabbits will not bother them. This will not be where they will grow the entire season; these crops will be transplanted in August.

Late July Seed beets, carrots and beans.

Late July to early August Seed spinach and long-season maturing lettuce. Leaf lettuce will be seeded later.

Second week of August Transplant cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower to their final location.

Mid to late August Seed radishes and leaf lettuce. There is no need to fertilize these crops before planting. Side-dress two weeks after transplanting, or four weeks after sowing seed, by applying two tablespoons of a 16-0-0 or one tablespoon of 27-3-3, 30-3-4 fertilizer (or something similar) per plant.

 </figure>It may be mid-summer, but veteran gardeners know it’s time to start planning the fall vegetable garden.“Fall gardens may face additional pressures of pests and heat, but the flavor that comes from these late season crops are often better (than summer crops),” said Kansas State University horticulture expert Cynthia Domenghini.She notes that gardeners should count the number of days to harvest, as well as the crops’ tolerance to frost, before deciding when to plant fall crops. Crops may be seeded directly, or transplanted into the garden.“Growing transplants is a good choice when the temperature is too warm for starting seeds in the ground, assuming you have grow lights and space available for starting them indoors,” Domenghini said.She provides some tips for successful fall crops:· When seeding crops directly into the garden, plant slightly deeper than recommended in the spring to take advantage of the cooler soil temperatures and moisture available.· Water more frequently to prevent the seeds from drying out.· Overhead watering often causes soil to crust, making it more difficult for young, tender plants to emerge. Prevent this by applying a light sprinkling of vermiculite or compost over the row after seeding, or use a soak hose or drip irrigation right next to the row to allow water to slowly seep into the ground.Domenghini also suggests a timeline for planting fall crops:Mid- July Plant potatoes if you can find seed stock or have saved seed potatoes. Do not use freshly dug potatoes as they have built-in dormancy that will prevent growth. Also, grocery store potatoes are often treated, so they don’t sprout.Cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower can be started from seed at this time. Choose a protected place where the soil can be kept moist and rabbits will not bother them. This will not be where they will grow the entire season; these crops will be transplanted in August.Late July Seed beets, carrots and beans.Late July to early August Seed spinach and long-season maturing lettuce. Leaf lettuce will be seeded later.Second week of August Transplant cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower to their final location.Mid to late August Seed radishes and leaf lettuce. There is no need to fertilize these crops before planting. BOOR: Mid-summer is the time to begin planning fall garden

The Barton County Commission Tuesday spent the day going into and out of executive sessions as they interviewed three candidates for the county’s open compliance/human resources officer position, as well as going into closed sessions to discuss the interviews. By the end of the day, a decision had not been reached.

Why the closed-door session? The purpose of the Kansas Open Meetings Act is to ensure that government proceedings and decisions are transparent and accessible to the public. But there are exceptions.

Under KOMA, public bodies like the commission can recess into executive sessions to discuss only certain matters, including personnel matters of non-elected personnel.&nbsp;This exception allows for the discussion of individual employee issues, such as performance reviews or salary, in a closed setting to protect their privacy.&nbsp;However, according to KOMA, no binding action can be taken during an executive session.&nbsp;The commissioners can reach a consensus, but any formal action must be taken during the subsequent open session.&nbsp;
