Star gaze away from city lights and look for shooting stars from the KWEC lawn. Bring a chair or blanket for comfort. Attendees can also see a real meteorite, on loan from the Sternberg Museum of Natural History in Hays, and go on their own magnetic meteor hunt.

Viewers can also make a spectroscope to view the spectrum of light and use the Cottonwood K-State Research and Extension blender bike to make a galaxy smoothie. The Fort Hays State University Planetarium will also be on site, and attendees can design an asteroid belt masterpiece. As with many KWEC outside activities, s'mores will be available.

Energy technology company Baker Hughes announced a blockbuster merger with competitor Chart Industries. The sale price is $13.6 BILLION in cash.

Rig counts are dropping toward five-year lows again, as horizontal drillers post big declines. The latest report from Baker Hughes is down five oil rigs from last week, while the gas tally was up two. The breakout for horizontal rigs drops a whopping 12 rigs from a week ago, and 49 from a year ago, marking the biggest decline in recent memory. Rig counts have dropped below this week's 540 only twice since September of 2021. Texas is down four rigs for the week. Oklahoma and Louisiana are each down one.

The Kansas Rig Count from Independent Oil and Gas Service is down one rig in eastern Kansas and up two west of Wichita for a total of 19 active rigs. That's up nearly 60% from a month ago but down nearly 35% from a year ago.

Kansas Common crude starts the week and the month at $57.50 per barrel after falling two dollars on Friday. The average price for Kansas Common at CHS in McPherson in July is $57.44 per barrel.&nbsp; That's 76 cents a barrel cheaper than June, and down from last July by more than $13 a barrel.

Kansas regulators gave their okay to 21 new drilling locations, or 430 so far this year, compared to 591 a year ago. There are seven new permits in Western Kansas including one in Finney County.

Operators completed 16 wells last week. Independent Oil &amp; Gas Service reports seven in Western Kansas. That's 725 completed wells so far this year, compared to 745 a year ago.

Kansas regulators gave the green light to 91 new drilling locations in July, including three in Ellis County. That's 480 intent-to-drill notices so far this year, down from 655 through July last year.

The Strategic Petroleum Reserves now stand at 402.7 million barrels after taking delivery on 200,000 barrels last week. Strategic stockpiles are up more than 25 million barrels from a year ago.

At 426.7 million barrels, commercial crude inventories are up 7.7 million barrels from last week. The government says stockpiles are about six percent below the five-year average for this time of year.US crude production for the week increased slightly to just over 13.3 million barrels a day. Cumulative output this year remains above 13.4 million barrels a day.

Crude imports increased to 6.1 million barrels a day last week, up 159,000 barrels a day from a week earlier. The Energy Information Administration reports the four-week average is also 6.1 million, down eleven percent from a year ago.

EIA reports crude exports dropped by 30% from a week ago and 45% from a year ago to just under 2.7 million barrels a day. Four-week average exports are down by 25% from a year ago.

The Republic of the Congo is opening up a huge swath of land to energy exploration, in what's described in The Guardian newspaper as "the world’s worst place to prospect for oil.” It's pristine forests include the habitats of endangered wildlife.

President Donald Trump shortened his deadline for Russia in Ukraine from 50 days to just "ten-to-twelve days." Trump is now threatening Russia with so-called secondary sanctions on it's oil export customers, notably China and India.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Kansas Tourism announced last Tuesday on its social media page the popular Sunflower Summer program has been extended by five additional days to Friday, Aug. 8.

Created especially for Kansas students and their families, the Sunflower Summer program offers complimentary admission to more than 230 attractions.

The Great Bend City Council had a big vote two weeks ago to get the ball rolling on the SRCA dragstrip rebuild west of Great Bend. Monday night, the body will make another big decision regarding the swimming pool.

The city currently contracts with JEO for on-call engineering services. One of JEO's areas of expertise is aquatic facility design. Last October, Amber Wyatt with JEO visiting the Wetlands Waterpark to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the Great Bend pool. Wyatt provided a 66-page report to the city about the condition of the 1936 pool and its features. Monday night, the council will consider approving a $30,000 fee to complete a concept development and facility assessment. 

The process will include identifying deficiencies, establishing key project criteria, and developing conceptual designs and cost estimates for repair and renovation. Previously, the city aimed to keep the pool operational through the 2025 and 2026 swim seasons with demolition slated for August 2026. Under the Quality of Life Sales Tax, the city has earmarked approximately $6 million for renovations on the 12,000 square foot space.

The council will also provide updates on a grant for downtown Great Bend and also funding for work on the airport lift station. Monday's city council meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. at city hall.

Pool renovation project on agenda for Monday's Great Bend City Council meeting

After 34 years of protecting highways and helping save lives, Kansas Highway Patrol Captain Travis Phillips turned in his badge Thursday.

"I don't know any other career in the world that gives a person the power to make a difference in somebody's life, no matter how significant or insignificant that might be," Phillips said.

Phillips was born in Nebraska but raised in Ellis, where he graduated from Ellis High School in 1986. He later earned a criminal justice degree from Fort Hays State University in 1994.

Phillips said he was inspired by a trooper who visited his school regularly as a child and later by KHP&nbsp;Trooper Kennith McGlasson, whom he often saw during his high school years.

"I would see him at Ellis once in a while at fuel stops. When I saw his blue and gray patrol car parked at the convenience store, I'd always stop and fuel my pickup just for a chance to talk to him," Phillips said. "He always gave me the time of day, and it planted a seed with me."

He began his law enforcement career in 1991 with the Hays Police Department&nbsp;before quickly making his way to the KHP in 1994. Phillips rose through the ranks of the KHP, serving as sergeant, master trooper, lieutenant and eventually captain six years ago.

"If you care and you show up, you're going to be successful in law enforcement," he said.&nbsp;

Throughout his career, Phillips faced several defining moments, including being pinned down by a gunman in Wallace County, stopping a wrong-way felon with a tactical vehicle maneuver and rescuing dozens of people during dust storms and blizzards.

Most recently, he was honored for his response to a&nbsp;<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/8ca4c0a7-0dc0-4dd3-8b6e-833e1efc6754">major multi-vehicle crash on March 13 on Interstate 70 in Sherman County.</a>

Phillips has saved lives in dangerous situations and supported former offenders he once had to remove from the streets.

"Sometimes you get a call from somebody that you arrested for DUI and they thank you for how you treated them, for helping them get sober," he said.

Phillips said one of the most significant challenges in his law enforcement career is maintaining morale in the face of national scrutiny. However, he recognizes the strong support he has received from the local community.

Phillips said support from organizations like the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.1033foundation.org/">10-33 Foundation</a>, a nonprofit offering mental health crisis intervention for first responders and their families, helped sustain him throughout his career up to his decision to retire.

"We all carry a [hypothetical] backpack out here, and every once in a while, your backpack gets full, and that's why we have peer support and mental health services available to help unpack our backpack," he said.

Phillips hopes to remain in law enforcement in a smaller and community-focused role. He is the father of two daughters and grandfather to three.

Phillips said he is grateful to his wife, who often left meals in the microwave when Phillips could not make it home for dinner, and to the fellow troopers he served alongside throughout his career.

"I got a blood family and I got a blue family," he said. "I want to thank my blue family for doing the job. Make me proud."

Phillips advises new troopers joining the force to prioritize faith, family and their work in that order.

Allison Ford, treasurer of the Wilson Czech Opera House, said the restoration is nearly complete following a 2009 fire that devastated most of the historic structure, 415 27th St.

"The Opera House was built to celebrate the Czech Bohemian culture, and we restored it for celebration," she said.

Ford said the building will open on Aug. 30. Final touches are in progress, including the installation of the stage, sidewalks, electricity and engraved bricks purchased by supporters, which will be installed at the entrance.

Events like musical and theater performances are expected to be held at the opera house. Kenny Benebba, president of the Wilson Czech Opera House, said Jimmy Dee and The Fabulous Destinations will kick off the new chapter for Wilson.

The rock-'n'-roll band is scheduled to perform from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., with brats and sauerkraut meals being served at 5 p.m., and drinks offered by the neighboring American Legion, where Benebba is also involved.

"If somebody wants to rent a venue, they can rent the opera house and the legion for an indoor and outdoor event," he said.&nbsp;

Constructed in 1901, the opera house was initially called Turner Hall, made from quarried stone from five miles outside of Wilson.

Equipped with a dining hall, kitchen, gymnasium, stage floor and balcony, the opera house hosted a variety of events, such as dances, gymnastics, weddings and pageants.

The 2009 fire from a neighboring building spread to the opera house, reducing the venue to ruins despite efforts to extinguish the flames.

Ford said the remaining limestone walls have been restored and reinforced with steel bracing, the basement has been filled and the performance stage, donated by MaiCo Industries of Ellsworth, is under construction.

"We're very close. We have the final steps to go," she said.

The opera house received support through grants from organizations such as the Kansas Department of Commerce, Dane G. Hansen Foundation and Smoky Hills Community Foundation.

"We hope to see people in there celebrating anniversaries, weddings, family reunions, dancing and watching theater. We just want it to be a place of celebration again," Ford said.

The World's Largest Hand-painted Czech Egg, standing at 20 feet high and 15 feet wide, is to the east of the former Opera House.

Former Wilson Czech Opera House to return as open-air theater

Larned Police Department Sergeant Anthony "Tony" Boor recently announced his retirement after serving the area for the last 26 years. Boor recently sat down with Cayte Armstrong, emergency communications officer in Pawnee County, to discuss a life in law enforcement. It all began in 1999, when Boor took a position at the Barton County Sheriff's Office - a job he would hold for three years.

"I took a position with Kansas Department of Corrections for four years," Boor said. "Then I came to Larned Police Department in July of 2006, serving part-time while working at KDOC before taking a full-time position in January 2007.” 

Boor has spent 19 years with the Larned Police Department. In that time, he has served under retired Chiefs Charles Orth and Lance Duft, and current Interim Chief Antonio TJ Hearn. In May 2007, Boor became a Taser instructor. In 2008, he began the training for firearms instructor under several certifications. 

Boor first attended a three-day training in Minnesota for defensive patrol handgun and rifle arms instructor. Later, he was certified instructor for Precision, then Tactical. He was certified armorer for M16, AR-15, and Glock. In 2021, he was certified as an FTO, (Field Training Officer). On Aug. 26, 2011, he was promoted to sergeant under now-retired Chief Orth. Boor has maintained the rank of sergeant since.

Boor always wanted to work in law enforcement, and everything lined up for a switch to that career in 1999. He was classmates with Brad Patzner and the late Dave Smith, both of whom were sergeants at the Barton County Sheriff's Office that year. Robert Armstrong was also returning to the sheriff's office. Jim Daily, sheriff at the time, had a decision to make with only one patrol spot open.

Daily pulled both men aside and said, “Let’s do a coin toss. Who ever calls it gets the road patrol position and the one who loses would go to the jail.” 

Boor told Armstrong to make the call. Armstrong called heads and the coin landed heads up. Armstrong ended up as a patrolman and Boor worked in the jail. Six months later, he was promoted to road duties and attended the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center where he graduated in May 2000. Twenty-six years later, he's ready to retire.

“I have enjoyed my time serving the state of Kansas and the residents of Barton and Pawnee County,” Boor said.

With nearly three decades of law enforcement experience, Boor shares some of his wisdom with future officers.

“Remember, the badge doesn’t make you who you are: it reveals who you chose to be," he said. "Lead with integrity, listen more than you speak, and never forget that respect is earned daily, not given once.”

WILSON — Kansas Originals, after 37 years of selling arts, crafts, books, and Kansas-made food products, is facing the demolition of its building and supporters thought it might be the end of the store and its mission.

<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/925f00e0-e00a-49cb-98b3-acfc1aeb3dd3">Although the building at exit 206 of Interstate 70 is still slated for demolition to make way for a new truck stop</a>, Kansas Originals has found a new home.

The store will close its off-interstate location on Sept. 30 and open on Oct. 1 at 2519 Ave. E in downtown Wilson.

Marge Lawson, Kansas Orginals CEO, said the new location will have a smaller showroom, but the nonprofit will have off-site storage to make up some of the difference.

The new location will have the same events as the former, including tastings of Kansas wines and events to meet local artisans.

"We're going to make it even better," Lawson said.

The nonprofit that operates the store owns its building, but not the land on which it sits. The building is set to be demolished on Nov. 30, Lawson said.

The Kansas Originals board is also pursuing satellite shops. The nonprofit is exploring a partnership with travel centers along the interstate. The organization had a satellite shop in the Topeka travel center until the pandemic hit in 2020.

Consumers can order some products from the store's website,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kansasoriginals.com/">www.kansasoriginals.com.</a>&nbsp;Lawson said the board is considering revamping its website and using it to promote more of the products available through the store.

However, she said because many of the crafts are handmade, inventory is limited.

The store will also likely add new signage to direct people from the interstate to the new store in Wilson.

Lawson, who was a co-founder of the Kansas Orginals, said she is thrilled the mission of the shop will continue.

She explained that mission in a letter to the Hays Post in May, "Our mission is to provide marketplaces for the work of Kansas artists, craftsmen and food producers, especially those who are 62 or over, low-income, disabled, minorities or women in business."

According to&nbsp;Post Rock Opportunities Foundation, which is the nonprofit that supports Kansas Originals, more than 1,000 corporations, businesses, and individuals have supported the nonprofit through grants, sponsorships and monetary donations since its founding.

The Smoky Hill Foundation, Merrill Foundation, Kansas Arts Commission and Dane G. Hansen Foundation are among the Kansas Originals' supporters, as well as the local artisans and craftspeople who donate their work to fundraisers.

Kansas Originals will join other tourist stops in Wilson, and Lawson said she hopes the store will draw more visitors to the community of about 800.

Wilson proudly promotes its Czech heritage, with the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.travelks.com/listing/worlds-largest-czech-egg/41977/">world's largest Czech egg</a>&nbsp;and an annual&nbsp;<a href="https://wilsonczechfest.com/">After Harvest Czech Festival</a>&nbsp;that was celebrated last weekend.

It is also the home of the historic&nbsp;<a href="https://www.midlandrailroadhotel.com/">Midland Railroad Hotel</a>, and t<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/faccd0a7-80dc-4f2f-99f8-e084f88cb981">he community has rallied to create an outdoor entertainment venue from its former historic opera house, which burned in 2009.</a>

That new venue will open later this month.

"Yes. I am happy," she said. "It's going to be challenging, but it gives us exciting new opportunities."

Kansas Originals finds new home in Wilson

Amanda Grandclair acknowledged she was a bit uncomfortable before speaking to an audience at an earlier Recovery Out Loud event.

“Even though it was difficult, speaking about my story helped build my confidence,” recalled Grandclair, who has a history of drug and alcohol use. “It was rewarding to try something new.”

The 41-year-old Great Bend woman encouraged others to sign up to give a brief accounting of what recovery means to them.

“Recovery Out Loud gave me the opportunity to get my story out there and not be afraid of it,” she said. “I hope to speak again this year.”

Recovery Out Loud, which is held in observance of National Recovery Month, is set for Sept. 5-6 at Jack Kilby Square and Veterans Park, both in Great Bend. It is a two-day event for the first time.

“Participants have the opportunity to take their recovery to the next level by sharing with their neighbors,” said Amy Ferguson, program coordinator of Rise Up Central Kansas. “In addition, everyone is welcome and we strongly encourage the community to attend.

“All we ever hear is the downside of people who are struggling. This is a time to celebrate their recovery and hear stories of success.”

Ferguson emphasized that this fourth-annual event is not only for those struggling with alcohol and/or drugs.

“We wanted to expand it this year to include anyone who is facing difficulties. We are all recovering from something. It could be mental- or physical-health concerns, grief or some type of trauma.”

Schedule Friday’s agenda begins at 5:30 p.m. with the Narcan March at downtown’s Jack Kilby Square. The goal is to raise awareness of Narcan, which can save those who overdose.

A light meal and testimonials are set for 6 p.m. The closing ceremony is at 7:30 p.m.

On Saturday, a one-mile Color Fun Walk/Run begins at 8:30 a.m. at Veterans Park, 17th and McKinley. Then it is back to the downtown square from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The second-day schedule offers opportunities to make community connections; build resilience during a field day of family-friendly activities, interactive games and healthy snacks; and learn about local resources that support recovery and wellness.

“A big part of this fun day is accommodating organizations that help us meet the needs of people in recovery,” Ferguson said. “Our goal is to connect them to the community.”

A few of the organizations that plan to have booths include The Center for Counseling &amp; Consultation, Stepping Stones to Recovery and Kansas Children’s Service League.

“We are so grateful to all entities that give back to their communities, while supporting and uplifting people in recovery,” Ferguson said.

KDHE issues air quality health advisory due to smoke from Canada

There was probably excitement surrounding the 1978 Great Bend High School football team that posted a 10-1 record. There was definitely excitement around the 2006 team with Panther fans packing the stands three hours from home away to watch their team play in the Class 5A state championship game.

But excitement heading into the 2025 campaign may be at an all-time high for the program. Great Bend won its first nine games last year and returns some of the best athletes in school history. Coach Erin Beck, back for a 10th season on the sideline, is ready to see what happens on the gridiron.

"This time of year, every team we’ve had is excited to get the season started," he said. "This one is just a little extra special because so many have been playing on varsity for so long.  There is a lot of familiarity with this group. I’m looking forward to seeing the ball in the air and getting the season started."

Even with the likes of Notre Dame-commit Ian Premer, three-year starting quarterback Daxton Minton, senior linebacker Trenton Kern, junior standout Cooper Ohnmacht, and many other returning starters back on the roster, Beck said the approach to this season is just like any other.

"As a coach and as a team, what we try to drill into these kids is, yes, think about where we can be and the ultimate goal, but you can't get ahead of yourselves," he said. "You have to make sure you take care of the ins and outs, the day to day, making sure we go and beat McPherson. That's goal number one."

Beck posted his own 10-win season in his first year with the program in 2016. His Panthers finished 8-3 in 2018. Behind last year's loaded roster, the Panthers opened the season at 9-0 before a 19-14 playoff loss to Hays to end an historic run.

"You have to learn from it," said Beck. "Each and every week, if there are things you didn't do very well, you have to learn from it. I know that loss last year has lingered with us. You try to put it behind you, but at the same time, you want to learn from it. That's what I think we'll try to do as we move forward is make sure we're taking care of some of the things that got us last year."

In his tenure, Beck has seen the gamut of ups and downs. Great Bend High School had just two winning seasons from 1980 to 2000. Still, the fans showed up. Wins or losses under Beck, he's been impressed by the community's continual support.

"The reason you get into this profession is to make an impact on kids," he said. "I feel like this community has made an impact on our kids and myself in that they just love high school football. I know there were years where maybe we didn't win a lot of games, but there were some darn good players  in the 90s. There were some good players when we weren't good. But this community still loves its football. 

"I don't ever want to make it sound like it's all about one coach, or one player, or one class, or one team. It's about something bigger in Great Bend, and that's why I love coaching here."

The senior Premer made the most headlines in the offseason. The 3-sport standout had football offers from virtually every major program in the nation before choosing Notre Dame. Last fall, he caught 30 passes for 541 yards and eight touchdowns. He took all five catches to the house against Buhler early in the season for a total of 167 yards. Premer added 260 rushing yards on the year and also piled up 50 tackles and three interceptions on defense.

"There are 10-15 5-star athletes each year across the nation," Beck said. "Yes, he was good as a youth but nobody would have ever predicted he was going to be where he is. He sprung up and shocked a lot of people. He's put in so much work. He's pretty special."

The senior Minton, another 3-sport star, has a chance to move up in the GBHS record books in his third season as a starter. Last season, he completed 64 percent of his passes for 1,385 yards and 17 touchdowns against just six interceptions. He also finished second on the team with 412 rushing yards.

"Daxton has done such a great job of distributing the football and running this offense," said Beck. "It's kind of wild. I was looking back, and in my 10 years of doing this, I've never had a three-year starting quarterback. He'll be the first. He's up there in the record books when you start looking at some of his numbers. Ian and Cooper obviously help, but he runs the ball, distributes it and throws it well, and just does so many huge things for our team and our offense."

The junior Ohnmacht has also been busy in his first three years of high school, winning a pair of triple jump titles in the spring and helping the Panthers to a state basketball berth. As a freshman, he set a school record with three kick returns for scores in a single season and also ran back one of the longest interception returns for a score in school history. Last year, Ohnmacht caught 35 passes for 466 yards and six touchdowns.

Then there's the senior Kern, one of the top linebackers in Kansas. Another 3-sport standout for the Panthers, Kern led the team with 113 tackles last year with three sacks and a fumble recovery.

"I think he's the best true linebacker we've had in decades," Beck said. "He will go down as one of the best ever to do it."

Other key returners this season include senior Jacob Hall (41 tackles, 3 interceptions, 299 yards on 19 receptions), senior Hayden Kelly (201 yards on 14 receptions), senior Conner Holladay (68 tackles and five sacks), and junior Kale Kern (41 tackles).

Last season, the Panther defense allowed just 106 points in 10 games, the fewest at the school since 2002. The 28 sacks recorded by last year's defense smashed the previous school record by six and reset the record for fewest yards allowed in a season (2,182).

Fall sports practices around the state begin on Aug. 18. The Panther football team opens its season at home against McPherson on Sept. 5.

Excitement building for Great Bend High School football team ahead of 2025 season

The Kansas Department of Commerce recently awarded nearly $9 million in Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds for 16 projects across the state. The city of St. John will receive $300,000 of those dollars for a commercial rehabilitation grant of the Hoods Haven building in downtown St. John. Stafford County Eco Devo Director Ryan Russell said four organizations have come together on the project.

"This is a partnership between the city of St. John - they're going to actually be managing the project with us," he said. "I will be assisting on the peripheral now because we don't own the building anymore. Tyler Wycoff and his company will be working with the city to pay its percentage, which is 25 percent of the project."

South Central Kansas Eco Devo will also assist with the project. CDBGs are based on income levels in communities, and St. John does not normally qualify. For the Hoods Haven building to qualify, it had to first be condemned by the city of St. John. The building was donated to Stafford County Eco Devo by the Hoods family for renovation purposes a little over a year ago, but as part of the grant application process, had to be sold. Two companies bid on the building, with Wycoff winning the bid.

While Wycoff Construction is a contributing partner to the project, it will not be doing any construction work on the rehab. Once the project is complete, Wycoff will have offices in the back of the building and Circle W Outfitters, a retail clothing store, will occupy the front.

The overall project cost is $400,000, and the block grant will cover 75 percent of the project cost with a 25 percent match, which will provided by Wycoff Construction. Russell expects bids on the work to go out in late September or early October.

City of St. John receives $300,000 building rehabilitation grant

Weighing in at up to 60,000 pounds each, the rows of massive wind turbine components aligned in Fuller Industries Inc’s warehouse west of Great Bend make even the cavernous facility seem small.

Takkion, a Casper, Wy.-based company, is leasing up to 80,000 square feet. The company specializes in logistics and services for the renewable energy industry, and the parts at Fuller are destined for planned projects across the United States, said Takkion Site Manager Nick Coghill.

Takkion recently increased its footprint at Fuller, Coghill said. Up until a few weeks ago, the company had leased 50,000 square feet in the southeast corner of the facility, and now they have expanded to another 30,000 square feet in the center floor area.

It is a win-win for us and those we serve.”This is a great opportunity to partner with fellow companies, Mann said, noting Great Bend-based Red Barn Pet Foods has leased room in the past. Fuller started working with Great Bend Economic Development Inc. last fall to market and promote its leasing opportunities.With 600,000 square feet under the roof, space is something Fuller has in spades. Even though Fuller continues to expand its product lines and offerings, the room needed decreases as the manufacturing landscape evolves, he said.This leaves another byproduct besides square footage – rows and rows, and piles and piles, of old, obsolete machinery and equipment dating back over 50 years to the Fuller Brush days. Some of this stuff is massive (one of the devices required a hole in the ceiling so it could be lowered into place).“We have a lot of stuff out there,” Mann said. It all served its purpose back in the day, but “now, most of it is no longer of use.”So, Fuller has spent months selling, hauling, scrapping, recycling and throwing away decades of industrial relics. The firm even hired a team just to help with the removal process.But Mann said there is a method to this effort.“We are shuffling things around, consolidating and reorganizing our production spaces,” he said.
