Barton County Commissioner Barb Esfeld recently attended the 2026 Kansas County Commissioners Association Annual Conference in Hutchinson, representing Barton County during the organization’s 50th anniversary conference.

The conference focused heavily on state legislation, property tax discussions, and the continued importance of protecting local control for counties across Kansas.

Commissioner Esfeld shared updates on several major bills discussed during the legislative session, particularly those involving property taxes, county funding, and services required by the state. She noted that many proposed property tax bills ultimately failed or were vetoed, which she explained was positive for counties because several would have created inconsistencies and additional burdens for local governments and taxpayers.

A major takeaway from the conference was the need for counties to remain actively involved in legislative discussions, especially as the state continues to consider policies that could reduce local control. Topics such as county appraisers, treasurer offices, shared services, and public health funding were all major points of discussion.

Esfeld also shared that Barton County plans to continue moving forward with its own locally driven property tax proposal, allowing local leaders to help shape solutions rather than waiting for Topeka to do it alone.

She emphasized that strong local leadership, practical solutions, and collaboration between counties and legislators will be critical as Kansas moves into future legislative sessions.
