The United Way of Central Kansas, in partnership with local hospitals and sponsors, has launched Companion Support Bags to support families facing sudden medical emergencies.
This week, volunteers, sponsors, and hospital staff came together to assemble 500 bags, now available at all four local hospitals across Barton and Pawnee Counties when a patient must be transferred out of the area for specialized care. Each bag includes essentials like a phone charger, blanket, hygiene supplies, snacks, water, along with cash for vending machines; offering small comforts during moments that often come with little warning.
The project began with one patient’s idea after experiencing a similar situation. Clara Barton Medical Center brought the concept forward, and what started as a small effort quickly grew into a regional initiative serving four hospitals and hundreds of families.
“This is a meaningful example of our community coming together,” said Michelle Moshier. “Inspired by a patient family’s experience during an urgent transfer, we learned how overwhelming those first hours can be without even the essentials. These bags help ensure loved ones have what they need during those critical first 24 to 48 hours.”
“Our team is incredibly grateful to United Way of Central Kansas and the donors who made the Companion Support Bags project possible,” said Julie Ward of The University of Kansas Health System Great Bend Campus. “These bags will remind patients and their loved ones how much the community cares during challenging moments.”
United Way of Central Kansas extends its appreciation to the sponsors, volunteers, and hospital partners who made this project possible—bringing comfort, care, and a reminder that no one is alone in difficult moments.
